Atlanta Falcons: Birds Beat Broncos on Big Stage

Falcons Notch Big Win on Monday Night Football

Moore = Beast! (AJC)

The Atlanta Falcons finally won on the biggest of stages after falling flat the last few times, and every time in the Mike Smith Era. The Birds welcomed one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time full of hype after beating the vaunted Pittsburgh Steelers. It was an entertaining and very long game that was filled with plenty of turnovers (for the Broncos) and a bunch of stoppage times from the replacement refs. We can talk all day long about how the Falcons almost let a big slip away, but the fact remains that they didn’t. In fact, this was a big win for no other reason than help the Falcons themselves, the organization, and their fans psyche in believing they can win the big ones. A look at the huge win……….

William Moore’s Breakout

091712 ATLANTA: Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan celebrates a 27-21 victory over the Denver Broncos as running back Michael Turner picked up a first down in the final minutes to preserve the victory during second half action at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Monday, Sept. 17, 2012. No Caption Needed (AJC)

There were plenty of great performances to go around, but it one player had to be chosen it was safety William Moore. The former Missouri product has become a quick fan favorite for his hard-hitting and many have been waiting for his breakout season. If last is any indication, we might be seeing it in 2012. Moore started the Manning pick party by making a great play on the ball, bobbling it, intercepting, and taking it all the way to the one yard line. Moore had his hands on several more and was all over the place, making huge hits, batting balls, and making key stops.

With Falcon fans shaking in their boots seeing Manning start to heat up, Moore made one of the biggest plays of the game by sacking Manning on 3rd and 6 in Falcons territory. He blitzed off the edge and dropped Manning like a cold stone. Some though guys like Kroy Biermann, Lawrence Sidbury, or Sean Weatherspoon would benefit the most from Mike Nolan’s aggressive defense, but Moore might be the guy after all.

This was a Big Win

Some of the NFL Media elite have tried to downplay the significance of the win after the fact, saying it was more Manning making mistakes than it was the Falcons getting the huge win. Wrong. Matt Ryan and Mike Smith had never won on Monday Night Football and everyone loves to talk about the times the Falcons have come up short. In fact, someone should create a Mike Smith-Matt Ryan-playoffs-0 and 3 drinking game with the sheer redundancy all media parrot the tired description. Peyton Manning was back. He beat the Pittsburgh Steelers and couldn’t be stopped in the talking heads beliefs. More than anything, the Falcons proved they could win a tough, tight, and big game against a very good defense and an elite quarterback.

The Falcons Defense FORCED Those Picks

September 17, 2012 - Atlanta, Ga.,: Atlanta Falcons linebacker Stephen Nicholas (54) gets by the block by Denver Broncos tight end Jacob Tamme, left, for the tackle of Denver Broncos running back Willis McGahee, right, in the first half of their game against the Atlanta Falcons in the Georgia Dome Monday night in Atlanta, Ga., September 17, 2012. JASON GETZ / JGETZ@AJC.COM

Nick Had a Huge Game (AJC)

The headlines were quite succinct after the Falcons big win: “Manning throws 3 picks,”Manning can’t overcome turnovers,” and “Manning fails in late comeback.” Was there another team playing? One reason many Falcons fans have tuned out and turned off the “NFL Media Elite” is because of this very reason. All we heard in the post-game was how Manning made the mistakes and that’s why they lost. Dead wrong. Mike Nolan and the Falcons defense played lights out and FORCED those interceptions from one of the greatest to play the game. Nolan had a fantastic scheme, coached his players up, and they executed to perfection. The vaunted Steelers defense didn’t force an interception. The Falcons forced three in the first quarter. I’m sure they were all luck, right? To be fair, there were a few pundits who gave Mike Nolan and the Falcons defense due credit, but not many. The Falcons played hard, tough, and aggressive and deserve every bit of that victory.

Best Defense in a Long Time

It’s only the second game of a long season and this isn’t meant to denigrate past defenses, but the defense against the Broncos facing one of the best QB’s of all time was one of the best in a long, long time. They were aggressive, tough, hit hard, and opportunistic in their defensive effort. They had picked off Peyton Manning 3 times in the first quarter and didn’t relent until they finally started getting a little tired after the offense had 3 weak series in a row. The Falcons have now forced 7 turnovers in the first two games. The blitz schemes and disguises were superb and confused one of the best of all-time. As mentioned earlier, there’s still a long way to go, but the sky’s the limit for a defense long looking for someone to help them turn the proverbial corner.

Great Pass Blocking, Weak Run Blocking

The long beleaguered Falcons offensive line have done an excellent job protecting Matt Ryan through two games in the season. Sam Baker was singled out several times by Jon Gruden for his excellence in stopping one of the best pass rushers in Elvis Dumervil. Garrett Reynolds has done well working at right guard, as have Justin Blalock and Todd McClure. Tyson Clabo has struggled a bit this year, giving up the only two sacks, but there’s no reason to think he can’t turn it around. Major congrats on a job well done so far this season protecting Matt Ryan and giving him time to run this new aerial offense.

September 17, 2012 - Atlanta, Ga.,: Atlanta Falcons safety Thomas DeCoud (28) is pushed out of bounds by Denver Broncos wide receiver Eric Decker after DeCoud intercepted a pass by quarterback Peyton Manning in the first half of their game against the Atlanta Falcons in the Georgia Dome Monday night in Atlanta, Ga., September 17, 2012. The Falcons defense intercepted Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning three times in the first quarter. JASON GETZ / JGETZ@AJC.COM

DeCoud in Manning's Pick Parade (AJC)

For as good as their pass blocking has been, their run blocking has been anemic. Matt Ryan was the leading rusher at one point in both the games against Kansas City and Denver. It’s surely not all the offensive lines fault (Michael Turner we’re looking at you), but they haven’t opened up hardly any holes for any of the running backs. It’s true that maybe Jacquizz Rodgers or Jason Snelling could squeeze out a few more yards than Turner, but not much. Something has to get fixed in the run game and the offensive line shares the blame.

Please stay tuned, plenty more to come very soon………..

Philip Rivers said today that these two teams doesn’t know much about each other. Wrong, Mike Nolan does know and has a game plan that will win it for our Birds. Agree with Big Lou, I’m kinda worried about the offense because the Chargers D will bring it. As for Matt’s first pick, it is the NFL and it does happen. The o-line will be tested but I’m think our Birds will win, 27-20, 27-17 or something close to that.

21, what Rivers was saying is “I have no idea how we’re going to stop them.” Same thing as Manning’s excuse. “They move around so much it’s hard to get a rythm going.” I’m loving our
D and hope Dirk figures out how to make our running game more effective.
It’s going to be a good game but I ain’t buying all or the airhead talk about a short week etc. MS will have our team ready to go.

This is another good test of Falcons progress. Denver and SD are both top 25% teams, and playoff contenders. Will be very interesting. If Nolan custom designs a frenetic D like the one we had against Denver, and we get good pressure on Rivers, we should be in the game.

“we should be in the game.” – Paddy O

So much caution and timid affection against the lowly Bolts. They have little in the way of a proper secondary to stop the beast. Only the emergence of Smittyball, Smitty-brakes, whatever the name for the retarded retardation of the leashes master. If we score 38 points in this game then we will be at a spot on 35 points a game scoring average. Easy pickings if the offense is allowed to.

Does Rivers use a no huddle extensively? That movement was meant to keep Manning from choosing effective plays at the line. I hope that quick counts do not catch us in mid movement and create confusion on our side. Just my opinion.

SP

I’m not worried about the secondary as much as I’m worried about their pass rushers. They are the best in the league right now in stopping the run, which will create 3rd in long situations for Matt Ryan. That will allow their stout line to get pressure.

They need to dink and dunk this game(create screens) to keep them honest. If not, Smitty Ball will not have a chance to ruin the day anyways.

As for the defense comments, please keep in mind that SD has a great running back. There will not be as much 46 in this game. Expect to see a lot of Dent to stop the run. So, even though they will move around, it won’t be 2 LBs this time. This will make it a bit easier for Rivers to read our defense. I expect Nolan to have a strategy to confuse Rivers, though.

Great Saturday Morning Cage Fam! — Should be a beautiful weekend here in deep south. Little college football, grilling out, brews, hanging with family, and we’re ready to roll. Any way you think we could get the NFL to switch with college and have NFL games on Saturdays? HA

I’ll just start from one of the best and most honest quotes from any Falcons player in recent memory…..PREACH BROTHER DECOUD!!!!…………

“It just got to the point where we had to pick and choose what to listen to and what not to. You learned to take some things with a grain of salt. Brian was a passionate coach. He wanted his guys to be out there playing tough, strong and perfect football. You can’t fault a man for that. But it was just one of those things where you had to learn how to take your coach for who he was.”

That’s gotta be one of the most damning things as a coach I can think of. Even though I only coached middle school for 5 years, it always was the biggest thing to understand and make sure the players were listening. If you’re players are tuning you out, you got major issues and that makes complete sense given our defensive play last year. This is not a ding on Van Gorder, because he did (I think) about the best job he could given the fact he had little to no experience in the NFL, certainly not enough to be a D Coordinator.

Van Gorder and Malarkey helped us win a lot of games and we should be thankful for that and they helped develop and nuture a very young and somewhat broken franchise after the V(p)ick/Pricktrino debacle, but was time to move on, maybe a year too late, but they were never going to make those changes after going 13-3.

As good as the Chargers run defense could potentially be, I really don’t buy into the fact that they’re great based on what they’ve done in the opening weeks, because they’ve shut down 2 teams that flat out are struggling as of now. Chris Johnson hasn’t really had much going in terms of running the football for quite some time now. He just hasn’t been the same guy since he got paid. Darren McFadden is still a workhorse, but he hasn’t gotten it going this season either.

Again, I don’t think we come out and rack up a big rushing day at SD, but I think we can effectively run it, at least enough so that we can keep them respecting it. I hope we see some more variation in the backfield this week, but also hope we’re not overly dependant on it. I understand the importance of the playaction game and what not, but as of right now, our offense should literally be playing through our weapons on the outside. Teams simply cannot cover all of the weapons we have in the pass game. If we can protect up front, then we should have no problem moving the chains against any secondary. Use the passing game to open up the running game.

I think our rushing offense will continue to improve week to week, and should be somewhat decent as we get later into the season, at least I hope.

SP: to me, it depends upon which Rivers shows up, and how much SMITTY BALL the offense is forced to swallow, which I’ve ID’d as an anchor to our explosiveness – tough to fly when your feet are anchored to the ground. IF SD has weak CB’s, I don’t think it matters if SD holds us to negative rushing yardage, we should still score 35 points. And, that should get us the win. If we keep playing as we have the first 2 games into say, the 8th game, I’ll have a whole lot more confidence.

Is it just me or are teams usually considered to be pretty good, or on the rise, right up until the Falcons beat them? And then they are flawed, suspect, pretenders, etc? Anything to avoid giving the Falcons any credit.

Anyway, the first two plays tomorrow will be runs. Question is, who will be the back and what kind of run plays will be called. If I’m a defensive coordinator facing the Falcons and I see Turner in the game with a heavy formation (2 TE, or a FB) I’m telling my front seven to crash the inside gaps and having my secondary come up quick on the edges so they can cut Turner’s ankles out from under him before he can get up any steam going outside. Just bottle it up enough and somebody will get a chance to drag him down before he gets moving. He’s simply not going to bounce it outside on his own with any authority or speed. If the Falcons call a run play designed to exploit that, AND if they can make the blocks on the edges, you may give up a big play, but you still have a chance to stop the long breakaway run because Turner doesn’t have that kind of speed anymore.

So once again, if I see it, I’m certain those well paid brains at the Branch see it just as well. I still expect a few head banging inside runs, because you have to keep the other side honest. Question is, can The Mad Koetter design some plays to make a defense regret that tendency? Cut
em Koettter! The Falcons defense is so much better when they can play with a lead and be aggressive.

JB FALCON

DHunt. if you were a defensive coordinator you would be thinking exactly like the other 31 DCs in the league. If we keep this up MT will be lucky to get 500 yds this year.
I honestly think that Turner could not run full speed for 100 yards with no one chasing him. If he did it would probably be in the 20-30 second range. Even though MT is slow he is still a good power runner, if he gets help, Quizz and Snelling have more speed and ability but, given that our entire running game sucks, I have to look at our OL. The only way I see our way out of this situation, since we don’t really have a running game, is to get more creative by using toss outs, screen passes, etc. That is on Koetter to figure out. He keeps thinking that MT is another MJD, which he ain’t, so he’s going to have to change his scheme.
This is just my humble opinion and I have all the faith in the world that our other weapons will overcome “most” teams but if we are going to use our entire offense to compliment one another we are going to have to do something with the running game.

You know, it’s sad when you have to hope the opposing team stays somewhat close so that the Falcons don’t to switch to their Prevent Offense.
The one thing I respect about the Saints is that they don’t let up until the closing minutes of the game. The keep pouring it on. Smitty treats a blow out win like a black mark on his resume.

Three BIG plays by William Moore when we are accustomed to seeing maybe one per game:

I am ready for some FOOTBALL today!!

This weekend has been a plunge back to reality from the Sportfan Shangri-La that Atlanta has improbably become the last two weeks:

1: Falcon win AND
2) Bulldog win AND
3) Yellow Jacket Win AND
4) Braves weekend sweeps of the Nationals and Mets

In all the years we have had pro teams (1966?) I just don’t recall consecutive winning weekends like we were blessed with. First time in 56 years? Can anyone confirm or deny?

Braves were pasted Friday night (but did bounce back Saturday on National TV). magic number of 3 to get back to the playoffs.

Ga. Tech had an embarrassingly bonehead 1st quarter against Miami at home (Never saw that safety on a kickoff play, hope to never see it again). Please God, please don’t let the engineers that inadvertently kneel on the wrong side of the goal line in a key game build a bridge that I need to drive on. A smarter 1st qtr and they aren’t in a position to be dragged into OT in the first place.

I am starting to worry about our Al Groh rebuilt D, our two losses (yes, our as a UGA grad, I support Tech as well) were in OT which we were forced into when late leads disappeared when the D couldn’t stop late drives (90 yards from the 10? less than 2 minutes?) yikes!

THAT is the difference between 4-0 in the running for the Orange Bowl Vs. 2-2 and in the running for the Tidy Bowl.

The Bulldogs are a different story as long as they stay grounded. That was an impressive win against a Vandy team that came within a gnat’s whisker of beating Spurrier’s gamecocks at in their roost (wonder if their cheerleaders looks like the Chick-Fil-A cows)?? I am officially impressed.at this early stage of the season.

The Falcons have a short week and a long flight to take on an undefeated team starting a QB with nearly identical stats to our stud QB, and a better run game (O and D).

Many have projected a Charger win, and a loss would in these circumstances would not be dishonorable for our birds.Either way they should be on top of the NFC south heap headed into the Panther Game next week.

Hope springs eternal in the heart of the true fan, and until proven different will approach this game filled with optimism, expecting a Falcon victory as our just due as the best da*n team in the NFL.

Fan=happy myopic optimist, whose glass (embossed with a Falcon emblem, of course) is always half full of “that” koolaid.

I kind of like later games, but I also like the 1 pm games as well. It is nice to take care of all your errands, stuff for the week, and kick back and enjoy a great game.

Matchup of 2-0 teams. We should win this one.

Need JJ to have a good game to get back his confidence. Really think he’s like a QB or RB. Get him some easy, short passes to start the game and watch him soar. If you’ll remember, that’s what happened @ KC. Denver doubled him a lot of the game, but Koetter still needs to find ways to get him the ball. But it all goes back to pick your poison.

Really hoping to see more carries to Snelling and Quizz. Would love to see Speedy Antone Smith get a look too. 17 carries to Turner and 4 to all the other backs isn’t going to cut it when Turner’s just not getting it done. Much to some of it is poor blocking, but counted at least 2-3 times where Turner could have easily gotten 5+ more yards than he did.

INACTIVES for today’s game

Falcons quarterback Dominique Davis, cornerback Christopher Owens, running back Antone Smith, offensive center/guard Joe Hawley, offensive tackle Lamar Holmes, defensive ends Jonathan Massaquoi and Cliff Matthews were declared inactive for the game against the San Diego Chargers today.

Figured as much on Davis and Owens. Looks like Lamar Holmes will be mostly waiting this year. Not a huge shock on Mass and Matthews. It seems as though each week, at least two DE’s get the inactive bench. That means Sidbury is in. McClain is in. and does that mean that newly signed CB Terrence Johnson is active today?

So we’re looking at this as our CB rotation….

1) Asante Samuel
2) Dunta Robinson
3) Robert McClain
4) Dominque Franks
5) Terrence Johnson

I would be worried if we didn’t have Nolan.

Speaking of………….CB, RB, and LB are at the top of my 2013 draft boards the way it sits right now. Really want us to re-sign Baker, move him to RT, put the Jumbo Jet Lamar Holmes at LT, move Clabo to RG and Konz to center. Reynolds is getting it done right now though.
