Six Searing Off-Season Atlanta Falcons Questions

Not quite finished with the new blog post, so wanted to go ahead and get a new thread up as the other expires. Thought it would be a good time to ask some of the biggest questions as the Atlanta Falcons enter the “dead-zone” of NFL Football. Have a go at the following off-season questions while the new blog post gets finished…………

1) Who Will Start at Right Guard?

-

2) Will Lamar Holmes Start at Left Tackle in 2012? If so, when?

-

3) Who’s Your Favorite Prospects to Earn the #4 and #5 Wide Receiver Spots?

-

4) How Many Defensive Ends Will the Falcons Carry in 2012? Are There Any Big Names that May Get the Axe?

-

5) Will Our Offense Truly Represent a Better Passing Game, or Will This Be Mularkey Ball 2.0?

-

6) Who Will Get More Snaps in 2012: Jason Snelling or Jacquizz Rodgers? Who Should Get More?

-

Bonus: If you have the urge, give your “ridiculously and entirely too early” 53 man roster prediction

Not very interesting questions, all miniscule because whoever statys at #1 and #2 positions will suck just about the same. Same goes for question 3 and 4. As for 6, I’ve never been a fan of Jacquizz, mainly due to his small stature and lack of speed. Snelling SHOULD still get most snaps, but I highly doubt he will.

In a perfect world
1. RG-Peter Konz
2. LT- Lamaar Holmes
3. Kerry Meir and Brandyn Harvey or Michael Calvin
4. Abe, Beirmann, Massaqua, Sidburry, Mathews, Edwards
5. The passing game will only be better if we run more No Huddle with Ryan calling the plays
6. Rodgers will probably get more snaps, although Snelling is better and needs lots more touches than he had last season. (remember Snellings production in 2010? He’s a beast)

Greg,

D3 is a fan not unlike most that post here. He is not paid. Do you know Davey, who’s still in the Navy and prolly will be for life?

If where you come from, I don’t know, is a comment, no opinion is your check in.

# 1 – Malauwi
2 – Svitek
3 – Cone + Cody (because Cone is from St Pius I went there and Cody that’s my middle name)
4 – Agree with Greg
5 – A big upgrade in philosophy and creativity over MM. But will they execute plays precisely or be sloppy?
6 – Even – They both are specialty runners with different talents

Question 4–# of DEs
Greg probably has it right. He listed 6 of the 7 DEs we have on the roster, minus Louis Nzegwu, and that’s how I foresee it working out, too. The only way I see us carrying a 7th is if he’s a MONSTER on STs and even then, it’s unlikely. I’m still not feeling this “few sacks from several guys” idea. Scheme can account for some of the lack of production from the DT position but not all. None of our interior D-Linemen are a serious threat to get after the passer–based purely on production, not “potential”–the numbers are not good outside of Babs who had 10 QB “hits” and 1 sack…Vance Walker had a couple of sacks and Peters notched 3 sacks to lead the group. I realize that Smitty says he values QB “pressures” more than just sacks–but getting the QB on the ground is the gold standard and our DTs were very inconsistent with getting it done. To me, “pressures”=failure to get the QB for a loss….

D3-There will always be loud mouth negative minded morons who insist on trashing everything and./or everyone. You handled that particular one with nicely.

1-PKonz will definitely start this yr, and with Hawley and McClure at OC and Blalock at LG, that leaves him with the starting RG slot.
2-LHolmes starting this yr or next will be totally up to him. With the competition he’ll be up against, and with both players becoming FAs after the season, he has an excellent chance to establish himself as this yrs starting LT.
3-As far as WR is concerned, I see Meier and Cone as our 4th and 5th WRs. Even though Weems ended up as our punt returner last yr, CB DFranks was our most effective punt returner during preseason. That move would likely eliminate the chance of Rogers and/or Pearcy making the roster.
4-I believe we’ll carry 6, Massaquoi, Abraham, Mathews, Sidbury, Biermann, and Edwards. With Nolan’s intent on using a lot of 3-4 formations on passing downs, some of them will be used as rushing LBs.
5-There’s no way Smitty would still be the HC, nor will he remain so after the season, if he had any intent on hiring an OC with any intent on repeating any of what we got from Mularkey.
6-Both RBs will get more snaps. I see Rogers getting more than Snelling, unless Turner is injured or has a slow start. We were forced to become a passing OFF because Mularkey’s rushing OFF was a failure. The problems was, Mularkey’s passing OFF was severely limited by an almost total dependence on using possession routes. These types of routes are geared to attack zone DEFs, but are not very effective against man coverages.

1. i think hawley wins the job at RG.

2. lamar holmes will be the 3rd string left tackle.

3. …. not too sure if the 4 & 5th receivers are going to make an impact. and if by some reason the falcons need them to contribute things it’s a sign that things have gotten really bad.

4. nolan wants quantity over quality so who knows how many DE’s that equates into.

5. i hope the passing game is better than under mularkey but i think all the pieces were built for mularkey ball.

6. if the falcons truly want to become more of a passing team then they need both of those guys on the field. i’ll give the edge to snelling based on experience and size.

1. Peter Konz wins RG spot

2. Lamar Holmes will start LT next season. They will give Sam Baker one last chance (I hope he excels, but will probably be replaced after 2-3 games). Svitek will start if Baker does not play really well. WILD CARD PREDICTION: we sign a proven starting LT to a 1-2 year contract; after he is cut due to salary cap reasons from some other team.

3. Meyer & James Rodgers………………….Michael Calvin to practice squad with long term potential.

4. Abe, Beirmann, Massaqua, Mathews, Edwards & which ever young DE plays the best during camp…….Sidburry probably gets cut.

5. The offense will be better IF IF IF the Offensive Line plays better. They need to open holes for the running game and the absolutely must give Matt Ryan more time to set & throw!!!!! No QB can throw the ball accurately deep down the field unless the OL gives him time on a fairly consistent basis. The screen passes to the flats and slant passes will put SO much additional pressure on the opposing defenses.

6. I hope Snelling gets more touches (carries and screen passes) than Rodgers & TURNER. I expect Turner will get 60%, Rodgers will get 25% and Snelling will get 15%. This will be a mistake……..we will win more games if we are closer to Turner getting 20%, Rodgers getting 30% and Snelling getting 50%.

Quizz vs Snelling… IF Turner shows up to training camp again over weight, then we will see more snaps for Snelling, as Turner w/age and added weight will be even slower than last year getting to the line, further decreasing his yds per carry and further increasing the screams of frustration from the stands.
Turners shows up to camp in shape, and knowing this could very well be his last year, then he could come out as a beast and then the more snaps will go to Quizz…
As I swore I heard somewhere, that somehow that this years offense will actually include (gasp) Screen passes…. granted Snelling has good hands, but Quizz would be better on a true screen to let him utilize his size to scat around.. where as Snelling would be better as a back coming out of the backfiled to catch down field. Heck, Snelling can catch a ball, turn, lower his shoulders and pick up yds right there
Hopefuly though our O wont be as vanilla or predictable as it was under Mularkey, and I am actually hoping to see more empty backfields….

1) Who Will Start at Right Guard?
I think it’ll be Manuwai… He played pretty well for Dirk in Jacksonville before the injury…
-
2) Will Lamar Holmes Start at Left Tackle in 2012? If so, when?
Definitely… if not by the first game of the season, then certainly by midseason… Split the difference and I’ll say by Game 5. (And I’ll say Konz is starting at Center Game 1…)
-
3) Who’s Your Favorite Prospects to Earn the #4 and #5 Wide Receiver Spots?
I’m really hoping this Pearcy kid makes the team… I’d like to see Meier make it as well… and either Cone or Calvin will make it if either of those two don’t make the cut…
-
4) How Many Defensive Ends Will the Falcons Carry in 2012? Are There Any Big Names that May Get the Axe?
I’ll go with the same six that have already been listed a few times… Abe, Sid, Mathews, Edwards, Massaquoi, and the Beer Truck
-
5) Will Our Offense Truly Represent a Better Passing Game, or Will This Be Mularkey Ball 2.0?
We’ll have a vastly improved passing game, and a better offense overall… and a better defense for sure under Nolan… Man, I’ve got to remember to get down on my knees and thank the Almighty God for not letting me become a Jaguars fan when they joined the league!!!
-
6) Who Will Get More Snaps in 2012: Jason Snelling or Jacquizz Rodgers? Who Should Get More?
Snelling will get more snaps… he’ll also be spelling Ewing some of the time… he’s also much better in the passing game than Turner, so hopefully he’ll take some snaps from him. Really looking forward to seeing Quizz on the screen passes… hoping Turner will be the icing on the cake… the cherry on the sundae… the final “We’ve beat these boys bad enough, let’s just run the ball the rest of the game, run out the clock and call it a day!”

Just a few off the wall comments you may all laugh at, but I’ve been right a hell of a lot more than I’ve been wrong when it comes to the Falcons. First, Snelling is a proven NFL RB. All the hype with Rogers and all he did was catch one pass thrown over his shoulder all last season. Inside, outside, he did nothing to be even average never mind elite.
So besides Snelling the guy that could surprise is Antone Smith. In one pre-season game he was totally unstoppable. Unfortunately, he later fumbled–twice and hasn’t touched a ball since. Smitty will eventually give him another chance. I think he’s more explosive than Rogers.
If Smitty is to be believed he wants to put the best people out there. If Konz is a better center with a new offensive philosophy McClure is gone and they use that money to pick up a tight end for a year from ffree agency.
If Konz wins the center job look for Mike Johnson to be the next right guard–I said my guesses were out there tonight.
Kerry Meier will be a shorter Finnerman red zone weapon this year. And he’ll really push Douglas for the slot position.
The Falcons will end up playing more 3-4 than 4-3 by the end of the season.
Watch out this year for Tampa Bay. That’s typical in the NFC South

1. Who Will Start at Right Guard?

I think that Manuwai will be the starting RG if he is healthy. He was known for his pass blocking coming out of college, now he is known for his run blocking. Jags RB MJD had only one 100 yard rushing game before Manuwai regained the starting job in 2010, after Manuwai returned to the starting lineup MJD had 6 100 yard games in a row. The team had 3 consecutive 200 yards rushing games during that same span. The following link is an interesting read on Manuwai.

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/Healthy-Manuwai-keys-running-game-for-Jaguars-95657871

I think Manuwai was brought in to be a 2-3 year starter while we see if Johnson or Hawley can step-up and win the job. If they can’t I look for us to draft a RG next year in the middle rounds to be groomed for the position.

I also expect Konz to be starting at center by the beginning of the season. I think Mud duck will be his mentor for the season.

2) Will Lamar Holmes Start at Left Tackle in 2012? If so, when?

I think he has the potential to be the starter at LT. We will see if the foot injury becomes a nagging problem that holds him back. Big men put lots of weight on their feet and they need to take care of them! I think it also depends on how fast he picks-up the offense when he if healthy enough to suit up. If he has not progressed far enough along by the beginning of preseason I look for TD to pick-up a 1 year LT to fill in while Holmes integrates into the system.

Should have taken Massey instead of Holmes……. he’s a project that will probably hang aound a couple of years until they can draft someone with starting talent. Konz will split time at guard – unfortunately he is damaged goods. Basically this draft was about depth for the Falcons and they didn’t get a single starter .

3) Who’s Your Favorite Prospects to Earn the #4 and #5 Wide Receiver Spots?

Here’s wishful thinking on my part, but it would be nice to see some four receiver sets and the Falcons keep 6 WR. I am looking forward to seeing what all the WR competition brings out of the new guys. We all know Meier and Cone will get to start the preseason at the front of the pack, but of the new guys I really like the following!

Cody Pearcy – 5’11” 160 lbs yeah he’s a bit light in the britches, but the kid has great speed and agility, not to mention he had a 44” vertical! He has a quick change of direction and nice hands. He catches the ball in the first window and will fight for the extra yard.

Marcus Jackson – 6’1” 195 lbs a relative unknown. He played QB at the same high school as Matt Flynn. Went to Navaro JC as a QB. He was moved to WR because of injuries to their WR corps and never looked back. He is a quick study with the playbook and makes it a point to understand everyones’ job on the play not just his own. I have seen him make some nice full extension one handed catches. He runs a 4.45, but in this group of WR prospects that’s just average. He played at a DII school that had just restarted their football program after a 20 year hiatus. I look for him to learn and improve quickly.

There are a couple others that I like, but these are my two favorites!

4) How Many Defensive Ends Will the Falcons Carry in 2012? Are There Any Big Names that May Get the Axe?

I think we carry six. There has been talk by some in the cage about DC Nolan’s comments of spreading the sack totals over 10 people instead of two or three. I look for the LBs to have more sacks this season as well as the safeties and possible a couple by our CBs. I didn’t take it to mean that Nolan wants to keep 10 defensive linemen to share in the sack total so that Abe doesn’t need to get 10-12 sacks on the year. I took it more from the stand point that we are not just going to see a four man rush all season long or even for the majority of the season on passing downs. I think OCs are going to be worried about where we will be bringing pressure from on every play. I am looking forward to seeing what Nolan has in store for the show!

1. I think Konz will get the nod at RG, and then slide over to be our center for the next 10 years starting next year.
2. I would say that Holmes won’t start this year, I think it all depends on how he develops, might start next year, but unless there are injuries, I don’t see him starting this year, I think he’s too raw. I believe if he develops he’ll be a steal for us, but all the talent in the world doesn’t matter unless the work ethic is there.
3. 4th & 5th receivers, I will go with Meier & Rodgers. I think Meier b/c it seems that they have a lot of expectation from him, he’s just been injured and underutilized which will change and Rodgers for his versatility on ST and return ability, too much of a gadget man to let go.
4. I would not be surprised to see all seven stay. I like Nzegwu and think he could be a good run stuffer at DE in the 4-3, and I believe he could play 5-technique in the 3-4, I also think Biermann & Sidbury might see themselves as hybrid playing rush LB in the 3-4, it’s hard to say, but I think Matthews would be the only 1 I could see going this year, unless Nzegwu isn’t what I saw in college and the Senior Bowl.
5. I think it’ll look different, I really believe that change is in the air and that they want to be more explosive and I think it’ll be different under Koetter, at least I hope so.
6. I think Quizz will get more, Snelling is a Jack of all trades and might split time at FB. I think Quizz and Snelling will both see increased carries as they limit the Burner’s carries anyway, it’ll be much more of 3-headed monster and it’ll depend on who performs better. I personally like Quizz, but Snelling has heart.

Go Falcons!

I look at the schedule and I only see one game out of the first eight that is a Div game . and a lot of non div games for the birds with a lot of back and fourth travailing. A couple of weeks ago the NFL live were talking about teams and there schedule and the Falcons were one talked about because of this reason . Based on how the Falcons were not that good on the road I guess . But they were one of the teams that they said would have problems because of there schedule
