Monday Night Showdown – Falcons vs. Saints

Can Falcons Sweep the Champs?

Well, it’s finally here Ladies and Gentlemen, the enormous Monday Night Football showdown with one of the greatest rivalries in sports. Many will point to the legendary NFC East or NFC North when mentioning NFL’s best enemy battles, but the bitter (and long-standing) rivalry between the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints should rank as not only one of the best matchups in the NFL, but in all of sports. Maybe it hasn’t always been extremely relevant in the past with mixed success of both teams, but it always has been a serious and hard-fought rivalry. The relevancy is much more obvious now. The Falcons and Saints recent success should vault the NFC South to one of toughest divisions in the NFL, even if it is often ignored by the mainstream media. ESPN at least knew exactly what they were doing when they circled the Falcons-Saints game in The Georgia Dome for one of their last matchups. The new order of having rivalry games at the end of the season worked out perfect for the NFL and overall television viewership. Not too much needs to be said on this one. Two of the best teams in the National Football League, two NFC powerhouses, one defending Super Bowl Champion, a Monday Night appearance, national implications, and a possible division title and home-field advantage on the line. Put directly, it doesn’t get much bigger than this folks. Six searing questions from the gigantic battle on Monday Night Football……..

1) How Bad Will Birds Want This One?

Most will scoff at this question since, as mentioned above, it doesn’t get much bigger than this, but a slight caveat enters into the fold. The Falcons technically don’t need this game to win the NFC South title and lock up home-field advantage with the #1 seed for the playoffs. Due to tiebreaker rules, all the Falcons have to do is win one of the next two games to get what they want. After the Saints Monday Night matchup, the Falcons will host the lowly Carolina Panthers with one of the worst records in the entire league. All that being said though, you have to figure that this group of players have penciled this one in a long time ago, much like the fans. Most knew how important this one would be when the schedule was released. Although the Birds have finally started to gain respect from the ditto-talking heads in the media, there’s still a sense that they’re not the most “hyped team,” regardless of record. Judging by Roddy White’s Twitter smack talking (see below), the Birds not only want to finish the drill so to speak against the hated Saints, but also want to prove once and for all that they’re for real and have a legitimate shot at the whole darn thing. This one will have a playoff atmosphere and the Falcons are ready for their true test.

2) Can Falcons Handle Healthy Saints?

Not taking anything whatsoever away from the Falcons on their huge victory in New Orleans early in the season because injuries are absolutely a part of the game, just ask the 2009 Atlanta Falcons. However, the Saints were a good bit banged up in their first meeting missing Reggie Bush, Darren Sharper, and lost Pierre Thomas during the game as well. Rookie Chris Ivory was just getting his bearings and Marques Colston had little to no impact, even though he was healthy. The Saints reeled off 7 straight wins before their loss to the Ravens in Baltimore last weekend. The first victory took everything the Falcons had to get the W in overtime. Many thought the Saints would spiral in irrelevancy after stunning losses to the Cardinals and Browns. That hasn’t happened and the Falcons have won 8 straight games and even tied an NFL record for most consecutive road wins. Every one expects an all-out, bare-knuckled fight on Monday Night, but Falcons fans have learned to stop being so nervous.

3) Can the DL Continue Their Pressure?

One of the questions going into the Seahawks game was whether the defensive line’s surge of good pressure would continue or whether it was simply playing a severely under-matched team in the Carolina Panthers. The Falcons defensive front continued their pressure resulting in a handful of sacks and causing a fumble in the endzone which led to a touchdown, which most definitely turned the game around. The defense in general seems to be playing better and better every week (see below) and it couldn’t come at a better time. That being said, the Falcons have done extremely well against two of the weakest offenses in the NFL. Even though it seems to be a worn out cliché at this point, the real test will come on Monday Night against one of the best quarterbacks in the league in Drew Brees. It is true that Brees isn’t having the same year he had last season, he still is one of the most dangerous QBs in the league and his deep strike, quick play potential can test any defense. Abraham, Babineaux, Anderson, Peters, Jerry, Biermann, and Davis will need yet another big game to keep Brees uncomfortable and nervous in the pocket.

4) Will The “Bruise Brothers” Show Out?

As many teams have shown throughout the season and beyond, the best defense can often times be a clock-chewing, ball-control running offense. Michael Turner is surely on his way to his second Pro Bowl in three years and much of the credit goes to the offensive line who has gelled once again and not only is protecting Matt Ryan, but also paving the way for Turner and Snelling to smash first downs and eat the time of possession up. Another realm who gets credit is OC Mike Mularkey and the offensive staff for not giving up on the run too easily and quickly when the running game is getting shut down early on. One of the biggest strengths of the Falcons offensive gameplan is for the running game to wear down the defense and after many 2, 3, and 4 yard gains, the O-Line, Turner, and Snelling will break some long ones in the fourth quarter. That doesn’t always work if the Falcons are consistently put in 3rd and longs and ask Matt Ryan and the passing game to continue to bail them out. The return of Jason Snelling comes at a perfect time because Gartrell Johnson and Antone Smith proved they couldn’t take advantage of their big opportunity and the “Bruise Brothers” will be together once again. Can they ground and pound the Saints into submission?

5) Is the Defense Finally Peaking?

Again, many fans will scoff at this question as well, but is the defense finally hitting it’s stride at the perfect time? It’s almost impossible to gauge the question after playing consecutive weeks against the Panthers and Seahawks. And even the run defense gave up over 200 yards rushing to the lowly Panthers. But the question should gain a little consideration because Dunta Robinson seems to finally getting his zone at cornerback, joining Brent Grimes major push to make the Pro Bowl with his superb performance and high interception total this year. William Moore has had an outstanding first year at strong safety, where he has a fantastic nose for being around the ball. Even though the Falcons secondary ranks very low in yards given up, they are one of the best in the NFL in fewest points allowed. Thomas DeCoud has had a less than stellar follow-up campaign after a fantastic first year, but he seems to be getting his groove back. Curtis Lofton is making his own push for the Pro Bowl by adding sacks and interceptions to go along with his stellar tackling skills.

Mike Peterson still has some gas left in the tank and Stephen Nicholas is making a case to be a future starter when Peterson decides to hang it up. Sean Weatherspoon seems to be getting back in the swing after an injury sidetracked what was a very promising start. John Abraham is back to his old sack master self and is getting very good help from the inside with Babineaux, rookie Corey Peters, Jamaal Anderson, Vance Walker, and Peria Jerry recovering from knee injury. The other DE position has been underwhelming, but Kroy Biermann and Chauncey Davis have shown some life the last couple of weeks. They’ve always been good against the run (except for a few games), creating turnovers, and keeping teams out of the endzone. Could they finally be “putting it altogether” so to speak at the perfect time?

6) Roddy, C’mon Man!

The Falcons have done a masterful job of staying off the bulletin board in terms of giving other teams something to use for motivation. They have actually been able to feed off their own bulletin board material to large success (remember the Best Team in the NFC?) and that has always been a major characteristic of the New England Way that Thomas Dimitroff hails from and Coach Mike Smith subscribes to as well. Roddy White is the best receiver in the NFL…..period. His competitive juices surely have helped lead him to being the best WR this year, but his emotions have also gotten away from him a couple of times and have cost the team some serious penalty yardage. Those have always remained on the field however. Roddy White, unintentionally perhaps, ignited a nice little fire about New Orleans, the Saints, and even some fans took it as him talking about Hurricane Katrina. Much to his credit, White apologized for his comments and said he was taken out of context and that he was just kidding around a little bit. That being said though, you can bet that some of the players and coaches are using that as serious motivation about the upcoming game. From the bit on ESPN Countdown they do before each Monday Night Football game, in the words of Mike Ditka, Tom Jackson, and Keyshawn Johnson…Roddy, “C’mon Man!”

Huge game.

I’d prefer all of our players stay away from the social networking garbage, especially if you’re gonna use it as a platform to yap off about our opponents.

As D3 pointed out, it’s just not “the Patriot way” – which is slowly but surely becoming the Falcons way.

We’ve been the team that uses the extra bulletin board material all season as motivation – with the Bucs and Roddy himself with Ochocinco. So, Roddy should know better than anybody that there could be a price to pay for such antics.

But, I’m not trippin about his tweets all that much. Roddy’s the type of guy that seems to back up his mouth. And, he’s as fired up about this Sunday as anybody.

And also, if the Saints needed some damn tweets to light a fire under them at this point in the year, really, it just shows you’re not hungry enough. If it takes a player running his mouth on a social networking site for you to get motivated to play a rivalry game against the team that currently shares the best record in football and is a couple of games above you, then somethings wrong.

Can’t wait till Monday.
Should be another classic.

The Falcon’s success will rely on how long they can keep the Saint’s offense off of the field. There’s no doubt in my mind that the Falcon’s WANT this win. The defensive line will find ways to apply pressure and the defensive backfield needs to do their part. As far as media attention goes, the Falcon’s new style of play isn’t pretty but it has been winning. I can’t tell you how many articles have been written about New England this year but I think the Falcons can match well with ANY team in the AFC..ANY team. Look at their stats…outstanding so far.The media only like the pretty stuff….oh look, Tom Brady’s mullett

Pro Bolwers – Eric Weems, Michael Turner, Pick an offensive lineman (their whole O-Line has been outstanding this year!)

Saint’s NEED this win too and they will fight for it. The seeding may put these teams rematching in a few weeks but I expect both NFC wildcard teams to win the first round and advance.

Take care of the Saints in workman-like fashion and move on to the next opponent. Accolades will come aplenty with Super Bowl rings. Moreover, personal stats pale compared to team accomplishments. Thank you, Falcons, for being respectable again!

Dumit — Looks like D3 gave too much credit to the Saints. Just to remind you, he writes for the ATLANTA FALCONS, not the Saints. Great comment too by the way with your whopping grammar and your 23 word mistake-laden, worthless comment. Goodbye Troll.

Keep up the great work D3. Happy Holidays to the Whole Bird Cage Family!

What up Cage? Huge game… huge.. I think Mr Jason Snelling shows up on Monday.. none of the ball control issues and hitting the holes like a monster.
I also think we shall finally see the DRob INT we have all been asking for this year.
Expect my ears to be ringing all day Tuesday with major smile on my face after this one.
Ya know Smitty had the saints game circled…be nice to clinch the South, and home field advantage be beating ones rival.

We want this game like a miner want..GOLD!
Not only do we want to clinch the division and HFA but to do it on National Prime Time TV, against out most hated rival, while damaging their playoff chances.
Monday Night is the Falcons biggest game in 5 years.

Of course, the Falcans, can handle the Saints.
The defense can limit Brees a and his weapons and Turnelling should have a big game, with Matty Ice taking advantage of his opportunities also.
In short: We have then right right were we want-em, so own-em.

What Roddy tweeted is no big deal, he`s just the one who came out and stated, what we all have been thinking.
No apologies necessary in my book.

-Simple and Direct: How’s it gonna be?
Epic win

-How bad will this team want this game?
Almost playoff level type want.

-Is this a time for Falcons to become “official” to national media?
Questionable if, winning 15 of their last 17 games does not make them ”official.”
I don`t know…

-Will a healthy Saints team pose a bigger problem?
Not so much, just play your game.

-Can Falcons DL continue their pressure?
Yup.

-Will Birds LB’s keep up with Bush and Thomas?
Yup.

-A huge game for the “Bruise Brothers?”
Yup.

-Is the defense actually peaking or just weak opponents?
A little bit of both, they are, what they are.

-How confident do you feel as Falcons ready for playoffs?
Very

-Your thoughts on Roddy’s tweets: big deal or much ado about nothing?

When I stumbed into the Superdome hungover and drunk that faithful Sunday in October,I had not been to a Saints game in the dome in quite awhile, the first thing that struck me was how few falcon fans were there, in the early days when we both occupied the cellar of the division I had season tickets, the Atl fans would come in bus loads and almost match the saints fans, and it seemed if we were not going anywhere, we still beat the falcons,or in atl’s case you beat the Saints that misrable year, maybe with the sudden rise of the birds, we will see more bandwagon fans in the future,it is alot more fun to trash talk with ya’ll.D3 left out the fact that we missed a game winning kick due to our neurotic young kicker and as I watched that kick hooked left, right in front of my seat, in O.T nearly 5 quarters of hard fighting football, one of the best games seen all year,I knew it was over and the Dirty Birds were going to win that day, I choked on my popcorn and then had a sick feeling in my stomach that was already queazy, that this game would come back to haunt my Saints,I circled Dec.27 on my Saints schedule, I walked out of the dome that day I was very pissed at the falcon fans that were there, shouting “WE DAT, WE DAT”,I shouted back “You Have No Ring “.So on to round 2 it would be fitting that we even the score and meet up in a classic playoff game round 3,this is one of the greatest rivalry’s in the NFL,wow somethings change and somethings stay the same I guess, from a WHO DAT LIFER,nice article D3.

I am pretty sure, Smitty handled the situation, by reeling Roddy in (in private) a bit.
As a result, Roddy came out with his apology but Smitty would never admit (in public) he had to do so.

1) How Bad Will Birds Want This One? I would say just as bad as the Aints. They marked this on their calendar and they’ve been listening to everyone talk about how we got lucky and pulled out the first game. I believe they want to prove that they belong in the playoffs and they’re relevant this year. What better team to prove that against than the reigning SB Champs.

2) Can Falcons Handle Healthy Saints? Of course they can. Keep in mind that the Aints beat us by six points and three points last year with a weak defensive secondary. Our D has improved this year and I have noticed they seem to be finding their stride.

3) Can the DL Continue Their Pressure? It’s up to Smitty, BVG and company to develop a scheme that will allow our DL to get to Brees, Our mindset in this game defensively should be to ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTACK Brees every change we get.

4) Will The “Bruise Brothers” Show Out? If not now, when? It’s time to take your running game to the next level (run harder and punish the tackler). In fact I’d say we need to add another bruiser to the equation: Ovie Mughelli. He runs like he’s ready to punish someone–and that’s what we need in this game.

5) Is the Defense Finally Peaking? It’s hard to tell against the likes of Carolina and Seattle. I do think they seem to be gelling. I even noticed the corners played right up on Seattles WRs last week; instead of the 10 yards off cushion.

Bonus Questions

-How crazy and loud will The Dome be rocking around 8:20 pm on Monday night? I hope so noise deafening until you can’t hear yourself think. We need to drown out any and ALL Who Dat chants.

-Will the Saints come out guns a-blazin’? Oh there’s no doubt they’ll try. Again, get to Brees and the Aints go no where. We have to show him something he’s never seen and when we get to him put him on the ground.

-Fast or slow start for offense? I say we slow grind early and wear em down. But like you said, we have to get at least 4-5 yds per carry.

-Fast or slow start for defense? Definitely fast! We can’t afford to give Brees any time in the pocket to pick us apart. We need to make him get rid of the ball faster than he wants…so Grimey can be there waiting to pick his pocket again. LOL

-Can Falcons continue trend of picks against Drew Brees? Grimes has at least one pick in each of the last couple of games against Brees. He can continue his streak, as well as, Willie Mo getting in on the action. Name of the game is takeaway.

-Will Birds have an answer for Lance Moore this time? I sure hope they do. One thing that bothers me is anytime we allow guys to get a free release and run through our LB core untouched. We need to have our LBs hit any one within the five yard limit to throw Brees’ timing off. We need to smother their TEs and WRs and be mindful of the screen pass.

-How much will special teams play a role this time? I will admit I was one of the folks down on Weems earlier this year with his soft KRs/PRs. The last couple of weeks he has been running like he’s trying to score every time and has given us excellent field position. We have to continue returning the ball well and stopping them deep in their territory (field position game).

-Will offense continue their emergence towards the deep ball? I believe they will. Gotta keep their defense guessing. When they crowd the line to stop the run is when we have to make them pay.

-Which Falcons SHOULD make the Pro Bowl? Turner, Roddy, Gonzalez and Ryan. We can even throw Grimes in for good measure.

-Which Falcons WILL make the Pro Bowl? Roddy, Gonzalez and Turner.

-Simple and Direct: How’s it gonna be? A battle between two teams that have something to prove. The Falcons want to prove that they can beat the Aints again. The Aints want to show they still can win and get back to the SB. (like that’s really going to happen)

-How bad will this team want this game? Real bad IMO. Roddy might have tweeted exactly how he and his team mates really feel–they’re tired of hearing about the Aints like they’re already a dynasty.

-Is this a time for Falcons to become “official” to national media? Who cares. Winning always speaks for itself.

-Will a healthy Saints team pose a bigger problem? I don’t think it will make a difference. Weren’t they healthy last week?

-Will Birds LB’s keep up with Bush and Thomas? These guys will probably make plays, but when they do…PUNISH THEM each and every time.

-How confident do you feel as Falcons ready for playoffs? That they can play with any team in the league and win. This isn’t your first week of the season Falcons–or the same one that played against Philly.

-Your thoughts on Roddy’s tweets: big deal or much ado about nothing? Once you let if leave your lips you can’t take it back. No need to apologize to those hood rats. Now go back up your talk on the field and dominate whichever CB they put on you.

We are going to run all over the Saints…look at what the Raves and Ray Rice were able to do last week against them…that’s how you beat them…run the ball at them…and then on defense create turnovers anyway you can…make Brees throw at least a pick, or cause a fumble, something…anything to limit their offensive possessions.

Ok, let’s try this again…

-Simple and Direct: How’s it gonna be? Like an actual playoff game. The Falcons want to secure the division, HFA, and show the first game we won against them wasn’t a fluke–but on MNF this time.

-How bad will this team want this game? REAL Bad and they will show it on the field.

-Is this a time for Falcons to become “official” to national media? Who cares. Just keep winning.

-Will a healthy Saints team pose a bigger problem? No because that same healthy team just played the Ravens last week didn’t they?

-Can Falcons DL continue their pressure? Smitty, BVG and crew will have our DL ready and do some things Brees hasn’t seen all year.

-Will Birds LB’s keep up with Bush and Thomas? Yes, don’t let them out of the backfield.

-A huge game for the “Bruise Brothers?” They need to step it up a notch and even add Ovie to the mix (he runs with bad intentions).

-Is the defense actually peaking or just weak opponents? I hope that it’s not just against weak opponents and they’re actually peaking.

-How confident do you feel as Falcons ready for playoffs? I feel very confident the coaching staff and our players are starting to take it up a notch right now.

-Your thoughts on Roddy’s tweets: big deal or much ado about nothing? Roddy said what everyone else was thinking. Once you let it leave your lips you can’t take it back. Man up and go prove to them you’re unstoppable Roddy!

First my apologies to Brent G ! I was ready to can him but funny thing, I aint no coach wokin with the guy every day and he has been MIGHTYMOUSE in the last couple of games. Way to go BRENT!! Disappointment in the pass rush, still giving up the big plays on runs and passes, but keeping things close so Matt can win it with a few seconds left with Roddy and Mike, and now Harry is coming on! Lets stretch the field a bit, or are we waiting for the super bowl? Like I said 5 months ago, its going to be Vick in Atlanta soon and I hope the people do not cheer this backstabbing jerk who broke so many hearts in Atlanta and all over the SOUTH, not to mention his team mates! He does not deserve to win in ATLANTA!! I am ready to STOP watching ESPN and the NFL channel!!! All they know is Brady, Favre, Vick, the Jets, Ravens, Steelers and Minn(with a losing record!!!) and completely IGNORE the FALCONS!!! At this time, there is ONE QB/MVP and that is MATT RYAN!! Look at his record, and NO SUPERSTARS, look at his game winning drives. These so-called “experts” are a bunch of loose-lipped idiots!! Some of these explayers think they can tell coaches what to do! Like PRIMETIME…”put Tavares in for Favre”…one play…out for the year..great call Prime! Thats why you are not a coach and neither is Irvin, though he was one of the best receivers I ever saw, as good as Rice. Again…put pressure on the QB!!! Do not let up!! Any QB in this league can throw all over the lot when they have plenty of time, look what they have done to the Falcons when there is no rush…no wonder we find ourselves coming from behind…lets DESTROY SOME PEOPLE!!!

-Fast or slow start for offense? Slow, steady grind out game. Pound em and wear em down!

-Fast or slow start for defense? Has to be fast! We need to get after brees every play and keep him on the ground. We need to constantly attack this guy and get him rattled and out of rhythm early.

-Can Falcons continue trend of picks against Drew Brees? The DL getting after Brees will make him throw earlier than he wants to–which leads to picks.

-Will Birds have an answer for Lance Moore this time? Yes, it’s called having a LB wipe him out within the five yard limit.

-How much will special teams play a role this time? Weems has been coming on the last couple of weeks. Looks like we tried to get Harry to return a kickoff against the Seahawks. We need to win the field position battle again this week.

-Will offense continue their emergence towards the deep ball? They definitely should. We need to keep the defense guessing and hit them for a deep one with Jenkins or Douglas.

What a disaster, they could not make one right move, no tackling, blitz the wrong way, don’t even think about an onside kick with 6 min to go and 14 point differential?! And special team that is not special. The Falcons are a 60 minute team, just like Abraham said, thanks JOHN and all you guys, you have been a real pleasure to watch this year. Great job D3 .

The Falcons are hungry for this game .They will win 31 to 24. The Dome will be rockin and it should be .

The D is not pecking but for sure getting there act together .As we all said they would get better as the season got closer to the end . This team has a D line that will only get better.

Remember last year how much improved the D got on those last 3 games . This year I see a lot more of that and now is a great time to be in the Falcons shoes with there record and these guys improving .

Not just the D .But the O is also starting to hit on more cylinders than just ,White, Gonz, and Turner.
Now H Dougles and M Jinkins are starting to really come around and be big factors or players in these games . Also a great time for this to be happening . We are a better team than when we meet in the 3rd week a much better more balanced team . And we are in our HOUSE BABY.

-Will the Saints come out guns a-blazin’? Of course they’ll come out trying. We’re going to show them we’re the real deal. I believe losing to them last year left a bitter taste in our players’ mouths.

-Which Falcons SHOULD make the Pro Bowl? Ryan, Roddy, Gonzalez, Turner & Grimes.

-Which Falcons WILL make the Pro Bowl? Roddy, Gonzalez & Turner.

Troy, hate is a strong word but it fits the description of Falcon Nations feeling for the Aint`s.
Makings for a great rivalry don`t ya think?
IT`S OUR TIME!
Remember, traditionally the Falcons have owned the Aint`s and it`s time for the to Falcons to take their rightful position, in the order of things.
We eat better food, date prettier women, have more class, have better jobs and live in a nicer city, we are just better people…Troy.
There is noting you have, that we want except that ring and we are set to violently take that from you, (for the whole world to see) on Monday Night.

Falcons need to win, but its gonna be a tough fight. I feel that the Saints are gonna come in with fire. Pound the ball and get ahead early. Defense HAS to keep Brees on his butt, don’t let’em get the long ball. With Bush healthy, I’m a little nervous. Hopefully, the Falcons can keep up the win streak and defend the dome. Let’s Go Falcons…. Let’s Go Falcons…. Let’s Go Falcons!!!!!

Look, if the Falcons want respect then go win the Superbowl. The only thing they’ve done is won is 12 games. That’s it! You are about to play the (healthy) reigning Superbowl Champs on Monday night….So, until you beat them,,,,IN THE PLAYOFFS WHERE IT REALLY COUNTS….you haven’t done nothin! How would you feel if the Falcons win on Monday, then lose to the Saints in the playoffs….The Saints lost the last three games last year, then steam rolled in the playoffs and won the SB. So do you all get it now…”You are judged by what you do in the playoffs!” Period!
Dumb Roddy White…he just woke up a sleeping GIANT named the SAINTS!

True, LDR.
Babs is deserving and I could also see where Abraham should receive consideration.

Von.
The Saints are about to get steam rolled on Monday night.
Then if (the luckiest team ever) finds a way to back their butts into the playoffs again, reappearing in Atlanta, three weeks later?
They (the Saints) will get punished again.
How sweet will that be for Falcons fans?
One hit wonders and the `09 mo-jo in dead and gone.

A little known Falcon fact:
The Falcons hold the highest winning percentage over the last three season (since Mick Smith became Head Coach) in the NFC.
Second only to the Patriots in the league.
Rest easy, my Falcon brothers and sisters.
The Playoff wins and hardware is coming and no amount of Saints drivel can stop it.

Sarah B, I’ll go along with your prediction but I would rather just hope for a win. Falcons 1 – Saints 0, if that was possible, would be fine with me. It’s going to be a good game and the Falcons are peaking at just the right time. Wishful thinking for me would be 63-3 and all the other teams would forfiet. Being an optimist has it’s downside, but your score is more realistic. I Believe!
