Three Torching Questions for Training Camp

The Days are Counting Down……..

The Bird Cage will be a touch out of commission over the weekend, so in honor of the 2010 Atlanta Falcons Training Camp and New Season, Three Torching Questions (Six Searing Questions during season) will be posed to whet your Falcons and Football appetite. By the way, the time is so very close now. Only 14 days until Atlanta Falcons Football Returns!

1) Give Your Ridiculously Too Early 53 Man Falcons Roster

Training Camp hasn’t even started but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with who’s in or who’s out in this insanely competitive preseason. With Thomas Dimitroff and his front office having two and half years under their belt, this looks to be the deepest roster competition that the Falcons have had in ages. It’s quite possible that many big names may not be there, and some unheard of’s will be ready in September. With that, here’s this ridiculous attempt……

QB: Matt Ryan, Chris Redman, John Parker Wilson (3)

RB: Michael Turner, Jason Snelling, Jerious Norwood, Ovie Mughelli, Antone Smith (5)

TE: Tony Gonzalez, Justin Peele, Colin Peek (3)

OL: Sam Baker, Justin Blalock, Todd McClure, Harvey Dahl, Tyson Clabo, Will Svitek, Mike Johnson, Joe Hawley, Garrett Reynolds (9)

WR: Roddy White, Michael Jenkins, Harry Douglas, Eric Weems, Kerry Meier (5)

DL: Jonathan Babineaux, Peria Jerry, Corey Peters, Vance Walker, Trey Lewis (5)

DE: John Abraham, Kroy Biermann, Lawrence Sidbury Jr., Chauncey Davis, Jamaal Anderson (5)

LB: Curtis Lofton, Stephen Nicholas, Sean Weatherspoon, Mike Peterson, Coy Wire, Spencer Adkins (6)

S: Thomas DeCoud, Erik Coleman, William Moore, Shann Schillinger (4)

CB: Dunta Robinson, Christopher Owens, Brent Grimes Chevis Jackson, Dominique Franks (5)

P: Michael Koenen (1)

K: Steve Haushka (1)

LS: Joe Zelenka (1)

Extra Credit – Practice Squad (8)

Gabe Derricks (S)

Ryan Wolfe (WR)

Michael Palmer (TE)

Thomas Johnson (DT)

Bear Woods (LB)

Jose Valdez (OL)

Dmitri Nance (RB)

Brandyn Harvey (WR)

Atlanta Falcons Most Current Roster

2) 2010 or Bust?

Its not fun to play in fatalism or speak in absolutes, but to get the convo’s going this should be a good one. Is 2010 the Year or Bust? The idea is not necessarily talking about this year per se, but rather if the Falcons are due to take a step back in 2011. The arguments…….

A) The Offensive Line Will Change

Tyson Clabo, Harvey Dahl, Justin Blalock, and Quinn Ojinnaka are due to become unrestricted free agents in 2011 if no new contract is reached. Three of the current line are starters, and its fairly rational to think that only one will be renewed. Mike Johnson (LG), Joe Hawley (C), and Garret Reynolds (RT) were all Thomas Dimitroff draft picks. They look to join Sam Baker (LT) in “the New Falcons OL.” There will be some major changes to an offensive line that has benefited from three years of working together.

B) Tony Gonzalez looking at retirement.

The greatest Tight End to ever play the game is nearing the age of hanging up his cleats. And frankly, why shouldn’t he? Judging on stats alone, he simply is the best TE to ever suit up in the NFL (yes better than Kellen Winslow). He is awaiting a quick entry to having his bust mantled in Canton, Ohio as one of the best players to tie his cleats on Sunday. He may come back if he knows he’ll get a ring, but that depends on this year.

C) Major Issue at Defensive End

John Abraham will be 33 years old and we don’t yet know what we have with Kroy Biermann and Lawrence Sidbury Jr. (assuming this is 2011) and we do realize we’re giving up one of the best sack machines in recent history with no apparent replacements. Barring Biermann or Sidbury Jr. completely blow it up, we’re in for some transition.

3) Give Your Ridiculously Too Early 2010 Prediction

We have plenty of time to examine each opponent over the next six months, but this is just asking for a gut reaction after you’ve seen the Falcons schedule. Certainly welcome to analyze each game, but there’s plenty of time coming very soon.

Bird Cage Gut Reactionary Prediction:

12-4, Excellent

11-5, Good

10-6, Disappointing

The Bill Gates of Industry’s Time (You)

-Give your ridiculously too early 53 man final roster

-Extra credit for the 8 practice squad positions

-Is it 2010 or bust?

-Can Falcons win big without Tony Gonzalez, John Abraham, or Tyson Clabo?

-Don’t think too much, but give your 2010 Prediction Gut Reaction

Good one D3………. Dark horse Palmer……… I’ll cut my 53 tomorrow………..

Palmer outta Clemson earned All-ACC first-team honors and sets school single season records for receptions 43 and receiving yards 507, 11.5 yards per catch …

This is eye candy and you tell me who it looks like………

Curiousity killed me and I kept reading anyway. Thomas Johnson is not eligible for the practice squad. I’d also like a link that says where Justin Blalock is unrestricted after this season because that’s news to me. Where did they dig you up kid?

I Do Suck — I will be the first to admit when I’m wrong…..and I completely messed it up. My line of thinking was Steve Hauschka, but I wrote Garrett Lindholm. It is 12:30 AM and I didn’t include Garrett Reynolds and I totally meant too. My mistake. If you would have ready my own blogs you would know that it was a simple error as opposed to a complete lack in judgement. Nice to have your excellent insight on the two mistakes I made. Very interesting I haven’t heard anything from you before until now. Nothing like pouncing on a few mistakes, eh? Whenever you bring ANY material to the blog then maybe I’ll have material. For now I’ll just refer to you as YOU SUCK!. Nice job G!

Why oh why do we keep Chris Redman on this team? Made all of one long pass for a TD last year. Remember it? It was in the second half of the NO game at the dome. It was also our big (bust) #2 WR’s FIRST TD catch of the year. Chris Redman can’t throw my trash away.

You Really Suck — …………Training Camp hasn’t even started and its something to have fun with. Dude…..really…..its July 15th (technically July 16th, because I’m sure you’re waiting for that one, eh?) and Training Camp is still full two weeks away. I’ll concede on the Thomas Johnson deal, but why don’t you tell me who we will keep on our DL? Or who will win the battle for the 4th or 5th DL spot? Better yet, why don’t you divulge on if we will carry 4 or 5 defensive tackles and why? Wait……..sorry, didn’t realize that YOU SUCK PART 2.

BTW……………here you go on Justin Blalock becoming a free agent. Let’s see: signed a 4 year, 5 million dollar deal in 2007. So let’s count shall we >>>> 2007 (1), 2008 (2), 2009 (3), 2010 (4). Hmmmmm…….you must have missed The Count on Sesame Street. Try again galoot.

Don’t count out Klecko. Between Babs suspension, and durability issues with our RBs, not to mention his experience (3 rings), I can almost guarantee a roster spot for him.

Serviceable? Mentor? Are we talking about the same Chris Redman??? Chris Redman is about as football smart on the field as Chris Miller! THE most profitable commodity in the NFL IS @ the QB POSITION. Exactly who (sans the Raiders) would allow a 10 year ‘veteran’ with a grand total 3k yds passing and 21 TDs be their starter??? (btw, 10 of those TDs came in 2007, 6 of them in the SEA game) If you end up with Redman playing, expect more of what happened against PHI and NO last year.

Good job, D3.
Just guessing, the last call for booze was issued around 1:30 AM, for our guest speaker?…LOL

My early gut forcast calls for 11 wins but I would not be too disappointed with 10 wins with a playoff birth and wins in the post season.

Too early for roster projections, I will be visiting Training camp and will talking about that later.

On Redman, he`s OK as a backup but I would not like seeing him start very many (if any) games.
Besides, who would we replace him with that would not cost 5+ million a year and be any better?

Good thoughts D3. I can’t want for training camp (and to see that dude who dresses up in the Falcons uniform and rah rahs the team…funny stuff). My guess is 11-5 this year and making it to the NFC championship…against Minnesota. However, they get us this time. Hopefully, it’s the other way around. Go Falcons!

Some thoughts– I think Jamaal Anderson could be on the bubble.

I think that if (and it’s a big IF) the O-line excels as a unit this year, TD will find a way to keep it intact for 2011 and beyond (minus Mclure, who might retire). All these guys are fairly young, so keeping them together another 3-5 years would be great continuity.

Like you D3, I have high expectations this year. 12-4 and division title is definitely where I think this team should be.

D3,

Great job. I will have my 53 man roster later on. Ignore the negative comments.

ATLJO,

Great vid. Just subscribed to your channel. Owens play against the run is what I think puts him ahead of Grimes for the starting spot. The think I love about him is if he gets beat he 1) make sure it doesn’t happen again and 2) makes a big play to make up for his mistake. He’s another one of TD steals.

I’ll have to skip the roster. I just don’t have the time for due diligence on all the performers to make an educated guess on who will make the final roster.

-Is it 2010 or bust? No. I have faith that the Falcons management is building a team that won’t depend so much on individual performance. They’ll keep filling in for the big losses at key positions.

-Can Falcons win big without Tony Gonzalez, John Abraham, or Tyson Clabo? Yes. Same answer as above.

-Don’t think too much, but give your 2010 Prediction Gut Reaction: Barring major injury problems, 11-5 on the backs of an improved defense and sharper, more rounded offense. Should be 12-4, but they’ll lose one game they’re expected to win. In division: we’ll split with NO (home and home) and sweep TB and Carolina.

D3 between your good info-work and Micky D’s I couldn’t have had a better start to my day. Choices, choices!

Some favorites may have to be dismissed or demoted to the PS this preseason, and it is my belief that those on the bubble are going to play their DNA off. One NFL alumni has a note to all disbelievers. Brian Finneran will have to be carted off the field (not a stretch with his history) before he gives up his NFL job. When healthy Brian is a proven 1st Down machine and a dependable red zone threat, and Coach Mike knows this. This is also Brian’s last chance and HE knows this. Finneran is either on this team or he retires before Game One because of injury sustained during training camp. If he falls watch out for Harvey. I think Brandyn Harvey is the wild card and Kerry Meier may have to watch this year from the sidelines.

I also moved JA98 from DE to DT because he will have to help there more than anywhere, and he just never had that extra gear players need for edge pass rushing. Watch for him to shine during TC or get cut. I also had to add CB Brian Williams for his great play in the short time we saw him. Even the play when he got hurt was a game saver. If he can stay healthy and can show similar cover skills, he has to be on the roster. I also added Giordano for experience and put Shann on the PS for NFL seasoning.

My 53 man roster:

QB: Matt Ryan, Chris Redman, John Parker Wilson (3)
RB: Michael Turner, Jason Snelling, Jerious Norwood, Ovie Mughelli, Antone Smith (5)
TE: Tony Gonzalez, Justin Peele, Colin Peek (3)
OL: Sam Baker, Justin Blalock, Todd McClure, Harvey Dahl, Tyson Clabo, Will Svitek, Mike Johnson, Garrett Reynolds (8)
WR: Roddy White, Michael Jenkins, Harry Douglas, Eric Weems, Brian Finneran, Brandyn Harvey 6)
DL: Jonathan Babineaux, Peria Jerry, Corey Peters, Vance Walker, Trey Lewis, Jamaal Anderson (6)
DE: John Abraham, Kroy Biermann, Lawrence Sidbury Jr., Chauncey Davis, (4)
LB: Curtis Lofton, Stephen Nicholas, Sean Weatherspoon, Mike Peterson, Coy Wire, (5)
S: Thomas DeCoud, Erik Coleman, William Moore, Matt Giordano (4)
CB: Dunta Robinson, Christopher Owens, Brent Grimes, Chevis Jackson, Brian Williams, Dominique Franks (6)
P: Michael Koenen (1)
K: Steve Haushka (1)
LS: Joe Zelenka (1)

A player cannot participate on the practice squad for more than three seasons, or if he has accrued a year of NFL experience (six or more games on a club’s 53-man active roster or official Injured Reserve list.) If the player was on the active list for fewer than 9 games during their “only Accrued Season(s)”, he maintains his eligibility for the practice squad.

ok, ok. So D3, you are saying that Brian Williams will get cut? Thats a hard sell. Dominique Franks better be good, and get some speed from somewhere. I would like to see the young safety make the team over Giordano, but you never know with rookies.

Question D3: Will the Falcone bring in a veteran, capable WR as insurance for Jenkins? T.O.? Vincent Jackson? Will T.D. pull the trigger on a move like this (as in the past at CB)?

11-5….we win the south, end up in a fight against Dallas to go to the big dance… (and after choosing Dallas, I need to now go take a shower…yuk!)…

Who is more worrisome, Tampa or Carolina as far as splitting the series? Could it be Tampa after coming off the win against Green Bay? Or would it be Carolina after we beat the Saints here at home on Monday night clinching the South?
As stated many times by folks in the Cage.. our schedule is much more to our liking this year… friends of mine called it almost boring, but rather have boring and lots of wins and deep run into the play offs than exciting and losing record… ( one is a dolphin fan, other a ravens fan… so kinda explains things)

I just don’t think there are enough balls to go around to need to keep an aging Finneran. Finn caught 11 balls last season with Harry Douglas on IR so with Douglas back it’s time to coach up the replacement Kerry Meier.

Kushion

Brian Williams is a tough call. He probably won’t be ready to compete by training camp(total knee reconstruction) and they only have 6 corners on the roster. He’s a veteran so as a coach you know what you are getting but it all depends on what guys show in training camp. Trey Lewis is a goner IMO if they keep 5 DT’s Thomas Johnson and Vance Walker had already passed Lewis on the depth chart last season and when he did play he was getting man-handled in one on one match ups.

Do you really think Finneran will make the team? Eric Weems had almost 1500 yards worth of kick returns and punt returns last season. Profootballfocus has Eric Weems as the 5th best returner in the league last season right behind Percy Harvin and this was his first year as a returner. Production on the field is what it’s all about. Finneran had 111 yards of production last season with the #3 receiver on IR. Finneran is a great guy and has done alot in the community but it’s time to move on. Roddy White made an interesting comment during mini-camp, he said he has to step up and become more of a vocal leader on the field and in the locker room because “Finn will not be able to do it much longer.” When your building a championship quality football team you can’t have sentimental favorites you’ve got to go with the best player with the most upside. Weems provides production as a returner and has been with the team long enough to know the offense. I would be surprised if Finn made the team quite frankly. Finn is loved by Falcon fans but it’s time we loved him without him taking up a spot on the 53 man roster.
