Season Prediction Champion and Playoff Picks Competition

1st Annual Bird Cage Season Prediction Final Standings

Other than discussing our Beloved Birds, this is a great forum to have a little fun as well. We’ve have several friendly competitions since the Bird Cage began, starting back with the NFL Mock Draft Competition, continuing with the Final Roster Prediction Competition, and now with the Final Standings of the 1st Annual Season Prediction Competition. All prognostications were close and a few had some pretty amazing forecasting ability and need to be on the next plane to Vegas. Enough small talk and without further ado, here’s the final standings of our first competition and time for some serious bragging time:

Thanks for all the participation and maybe one of these days we can get some prizes to give away. Bragging rights sure are fun to have in the meantime. Speaking of friendly competitions……

Even though our Falcons are out of the playoffs, doesn’t mean we can’t enter into a little friendly competition of predicting the playoffs. Please enter in and enjoy the 1st Annual Bird Cage Playoff Prediction Competition. Here’s the rules:

1) Pick each playoff game each week against the spread as of that Wednesday

2) One point given for each game picked correctly

3) Competition will run through the Super Bowl

4) Must have picks in before start time of first game of the weekend

5) Picks are only done week by week since seedings dictate next rounds match-ups

Using the bonus system, kind of convoluted, but here’s how it works:

Out of the picks you choose, designate one game as a 2 pointer (similar to a lock)

You will designate the game you feel best about as a 2 pointer that can add 2 points in addition to the 1 point for getting the game correct if you choose it right

For example, if I feel that the Cowboys are the biggest lock to cover the spread and win, I will designate that game as my two-point game. If the Cowboys win that game, I would get 3 total points (1 for choosing the game correct and 2 for designating it as my two-point game)

You will also choose another game as a 1 pointer that can add an additional point onto another game.

For example, if I feel that the Packers are the second best “lock” to cover the spread and beat the Cardinals, than I would designate that as my one-point game. So if the Packers cover the spread and beat the Cardinals, than I would receive two total points for that game (1 for choosing the game correctly and 1 additional point for designating it as my 1 point game).

I know it sounds ridiculously complicated, but it just adds another element of thought and interest to the competition. Here’s an example of a pick sheet that could be submitted to help with any confusion:

Michael Smith’s Example Picks

Bengals (-2.5) vs. Jets – (((Jets)))

Cowboys (-4) vs.Eagles – (((Cowboys))) 1-Point Bonus Game

Patriots (-3.5) vs. Ravens – (((Patriots)))

Cardinals (-1.5) vs. Packers – (((Packers)))  2-Point Bonus Game

This weekend a total possibility of getting 7 total points (4 if you choose all games correctly and that would add 3 bonus points as well)

Sounds complicated, and if you have any questions please fire away.

Official Point Spreads as of Wednesday, January 6, 2010

(Which will be the set point spreads for all games this weekend)

Bengals (-2.5) vs. Jets

Cowboys (-4) vs.Eagles

Patriots (-3.5) vs. Ravens

Cardinals (-1.5) vs. Packers

My Pitiful Choices of this Weekend’s Picks

Taking the Patriots over the Ravens and cover at home, even without Welker

Have to go with the Bengals over the Jets since the Jets backed into the playoffs and have a rookie QB

Hate to, but taking the Cowboys at home to finally win a playoff game over the Eagles (1 point bonus game)

Packers defense is on fire and Cardinals are really banged up (2 point bonus game)

Final Picks

Patriots, Bengals, Cowboys (1 point bonus), Packers (2 point bonus)

Send out any questions you may have and put your prognostication hats on. Winner wins major bragging rights!

And of course keep talking anything that tickles your fancy concerning the Falcons. We’ll be back to regular programming next week.  Enjoy………

D3,
Interesting contest. What is the deadline for submission each week? Is it game time like FFL?

Congrats to those who smoked me on the prediction front.

Hope that this offseason will bring about the changes and tough decisions that I know our staff can and will make, to move the Falcons up another step on the ladder to consistent contender. Go Birds!

Sarah B,

I was speaking more in reference of a team covering the spread. I have no idea how that works.

CBrass, that’s easy… say the Ravens only lose by 1 it means the Pats didn’t cover the spread and Ravens betters win. That’s all there is to it.

I’m back baby!! When I retired from active duty, I thought I was done with all this “shadow” stuff. But I guess not. Anyways, glad to be home and back with my Cage family. I missed so much over the time I was gone. My wish is that everyone is doing well, that the holidays were pleasant, and that the New Year is off to a great start.

Going to be getting caught up, taking some down time, and just getting back into the flow. Missed all of you and I am anxious to begin the free agency/draft chat.

ONE NATION….FALCON NATION. God bless and keep you all. See soon on the other side.

From the Falcons weekly newsletter:

That’s A Wrap
Birds finish at 9-7
The 2009 season didn’t live up to all the team’s expectations but the Falcons did make some history.

With a Week 17 win the Falcons finished with a winning record — the first time that’s happened in back-to-back seasons since the franchise was born.

Head Coach Mike Smith talked about some of his team’s accomplishments and the victory at Tampa Bay when he met with the media Monday afternoon.

Smith and General Manger Thomas Dimitroff are expected to meet with the media again on Jan. 11 to discuss offseason plans.

Stay with AtlantaFalcons.com through the offseason for more on the team’s free agency moves, trip to the Combine and the 2010 NFL Draft, where the Falcons will hold the No. 19 or 20 selection in the first round.

Opponents Set
Falcons 2010 opponent list confirmed
With Sunday’s win over the Buccaneers the Falcons secured second place in the NFC South. So, in the 2010 season, Atlanta will play the second-place teams in the NFC East and NFC North.

Green Bay finished behind Minnesota in the North and will travel to the Georgia Dome at some point next season. The loser of the Cowboys-Eagles game (Philadelphia), is the second-place finisher in the NFC East and will host the Falcons.

Atlanta’s other home and away opponents are set based on the league’s rotating format:

Home Opponents
Baltimore
Cincinnati
Arizona
San Francisco
Tampa Bay
Carolina
New Orleans
Green Bay Road Opponents
Pittsburgh
Cleveland
Seattle
St. Louis
Tampa Bay
Carolina
New Orleans
Philadelphia

Y’all see this on espn? In regards to NFC South.. quite an improvement compared to this past season.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, the Atlanta Falcons have the division’s hardest schedule in 2010. But the good news is the schedule ranks No. 20 in the league. The schedule for the Buccaneers is rated No. 25. For the Panthers, it’s No. 26 and it’s No. 27 for the Saints.

Man this is getting ugly. They’ll blame this loss on the Colt McCoy injury, but Alabama is flat kicking their butts on both sides of the line. Very impressed with Alabama D, #62, and their running game. Not impressesd with Texas coaching, tackling, overall D.

I want Mount Cody!!!!!!!!

UGA needs Kirby Smart and the Falcons need Mount Cody. Listen, put him next to Babs and/or Jerry and watch our DEs rack up the sacks and our CBs will go to the probowl. He is blowing up double teams and penetrating into the backfield.
