Unbelievable Defensive Start (CCompton/AJC)
Atlanta Falcons beat the Miami Dolphins 19 – 7, and we’re 1 – 0 BABY! Just a quick hit after the game on Sunday with tons more to come later throughout the week. What a way to start the season Falcons Fans, beating a top-tier opponent pretty soundly in the opening weekend of the season. The Terror-Dome was packed, loud, and the fans made it a true home-field advantage.
Offense

Welcome to the ATL! (Bob Andres/AJC)
Michael Turner was bottled up all day, mostly because the Dolphins were determined to not allow him to beat them. They did a great job of shutting down the run and making Matt Ryan beat them through the air. It certainly wasn’t due to a lack of effort, with Coach Mularkey calling Turner’s number 22 times, but averaging less than 3 yards an attempt. Know for breaking long runs, Turner’s longest from scrimmage was 12 yards. Norwood had even less success only netting 7 yards. Matt Ryan looked a little shaky at times, particularly early and in the especially in the vertical passing attack, but settled down and had an overall very good day against a very good defense completing 22 passes in 36 attempts, 229 yards, and 2 touchdowns. Even though he missed on a few throws, he didn’t make any mistakes. Jerious, Roddy, and Jenks all had 40 yards receiving and many excellent 3rd conversions, but no touchdowns. But the receiver of the day title is reserved for our new Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez! What a day by the consummate All-Pro. It was special watching #88 convert tons of huge 3rd downs, making magnificent catches, and showing he’s still got some moves after dish-ragging a Dolphins defender and taking it 20 yards to the house. Gonzalez proved how difficult it will be to stop the entire Falcons arsenal. Pick your poison in other words.
Game Ball: Tony Gonzalez. Welcome to the ATL Gonzo!
Defense

Huge Day by Kroy (CCompton/AJC)
In a word: WOW! I’ll be the first to eat some humble pie after witnessing that great display of attack, ferocity, toughness, and dominance. The new look defense was flying around the field all day, bringing the helmets on every play, causing turnovers, and giving a glimpse of what’s in store. Kudos to Coach Smith, Coach Van Gorder, and all the defensive players after a magnificent performance. It would really be impossible to pick a player of the game on defense because there were so many. John Abraham picked up right where he left off from last year collaring two sacks and three tackles. Curtis Lofton continued his ascent as one of the best young middle linebackers in the NFL, flying all over the field and bringing the thunder with each powerful hit. Lofton helped to set the tone with his ferocious hits. Mike Peterson with the defensive plays of the day putting a bone-crushing hit on TE Anthony Fasano, jarring loose a fumble, which newly acquired vet CB Brian Williams returned. Peterson also had another magnificent play later when he picked off Pennington and raced down the sidelines. All totaled, Peterson came away with 7 tackles, 1 interception, and 1 forced fumble. The breakout player of the day was by far and away Kroy Biermann. That guy was a beast today with his amped up high motor collaring two sacks, smashing hits on special teams, and even forcing a fumble. Although Chauncey Davis and Jamaal Anderson also played pretty well, I think we now know who our defensive end of the present and future might be. Overall an amazing effort for a defense that has been harangued to pieces about their ineptness. Job greatly done!
Game Ball: Mike Peterson. The newly acquired vet had 7 tackles, an interception and return, and a forced fumble
Special Teams
Kickoff and punt teams were amazing. Antoine Harris, Chris Owens, Lawrence Sidbury, and Kroy Biermann were flying down the field, busting up wedges and pinning the Dolphins back around the 10 and 15 yard line all day. Coach Armstrong has assembled another great unit thus far and it is apparent that special teams again is a big priority. Jason Elam missing a potentially critical extra point and two easy field goals was troubling, but he bounced back later in the game to hit a 50 yarder. Eric Weems had a couple of nice punt returns and didn’t bobble any balls, like Adam Jennings did on a frequent basis last year.
Game Ball: Kroy Biermann
Coaching
Overall, masterful gameplan, preparation, and execution from coaching staff, top to bottom. The Falcons were ready to play and came out with a sense of urgency and fire. The offense regrouped from several misfires to get the job done, and took what was available. Defense played phenomenally and proved that this group should never be overlooked. Special teams were on point. Only curious calls were going to the passing game on several 3rd and shorts (3rd and 1, 3rd and 2).
Game Ball: Coach Van Gorder
Tailgating Corkscrew
I’ll let all other season ticket holders and game attendees fill in their experiences, but everything leading up to the game was a complete nightmare and overall insulting showing by the Atlanta Falcons organization in getting this one structured.
Some of it was my own fault for not getting there earlier and not purchasing a season parking pass (because money is so readily available to all of us these days), but there basically was only one public parking lot and if you weren’t lucky enough to get one, then you either had to fork over $40 for an independent lot or you were basically screwed. The yellow lot was full, so we tried the blue lot which was public sometimes and it was completely empty, but we got the “sorry, passes only” and when I asked for a recommendation on where to park, the attendant suggested the orange lots and red deck. So upon trying those we find out that, yep, also passes only, including the red deck which had thousands of spaces available.
A completely pitiful display for helping fans out by the Falcons organization. Many of us bust our ass to just to be able to afford these tickets, and to get the corkscrew on tailgating is insulting. It would be understandable if parking was just not available, but it was apparent that there were hundreds and even thousands of spaces on hand for fans. They at least need to be honest with fans and say that if you don’t buy a season parking pass than either pay a ridiculous cost the day of the game or don’t bother tailgating. It was actually easier for my wife and I to turn around at the Dome after spending an hour trying to get a spot, and go and park downtown, hit Marta and get back that way, which took a tenth of the time. The line at Upper Gate C was terrible. I counted and we waited for 25 minutes to get into the Dome, which many of us subsequently missed the kickoff and several series. Granted, it was the first game and some of it was my own fault, but the experience pretty much sucked until we got into the Dome, and then it was all good of course. Note to self: take Marta from now on.
-What’s your thoughts on the opening win?
-Who gets your game balls on offense? Defense? Special Teams
-Surprised at defense domination, or you expected it?
-Concerned about lack of running game?
-Matt Ryan good enough, or should be better?
-How was your tailgating experience?
-Issue with parking, or am I way off base?

This game was absolutely spellbinding! Nothing could have possibly gotten me more pumped for game 2 than a win like this, in which we dominated on the defensive end. Tony G. really showed how great of an acquisition he is. Now lets bring on the Panthers!

The coaches did a heck of a job making everyone think the defense was hopelessly the weak link . . . we all were shocked to see such a powerful display against an explosive offense like Miami and the utterly surprised Dolphins were not on the same level. Their defense was good also, but not a dominating one like the Birds. Way to play football Guys! Keep that mentality all year and you’ll be in the Super Bowl.

I will also be the first to give CH23 his props today, dude came to play and WOW, did he play! JA98 has a good game also. I noticed that BWilliams started in place of grimes….I was surrounded by a few Dolphins today and they came in talking smack, even heard one say this is our house! Yeah, lol…your house alright, you were damn near shut out and you got smack in the mouth on almost all plays on D!!!!!! Again, that D was crazy good today and if they keep playing like this, WOW…scary!!
On a sour note, Matt was off today, he was not in sync at all…missed a couple of sure touchdown passes..but I’m sure it was first game gitters…he will rebound fine!
What the heck was wrong with Jason Elam? Dude blew 7 points alone…
but overall it was a great game even though we should have won 30-0!
I’m pround that the terror dome was rockin!! Section 128 brought the noise today!

Excellent work D3. Ryan was out of sync but that will change to the point where it may be the pass this year that setups the run. Don’t think anyone on here expected the type of defensive performance we got but it bodes well for the future and once again reaffirms TD & Smitty’s brilliance.

As for tailgating woes….you just said you got to the game late….could this not have been the primary reason you couldn’t find a parking place? Any time I arrive late for tailgating, it’s a nightmare. I’m usually coming in with 4 of us total and we’ll park just off of the Marta station and pay $30-$40….that’s the going rate. There are plenty of cheaper locations farther out, but you’ve got to get there on time.
Sounds like you had a very frustrating morning and I respect that…i’ve been there. But don’t throw the whole tailgating experience under the bus when more than likely your tardiness created the majority of the issue.

Great post as usual D3!!
Read on another post that MS said that they tried players on D during the preseason with no help to see what their limitations were, knowing they would be able to provide coverage during the season. (For instance, having a CB play M2M with no safety help). That is why the D seemed to perform so poorly during the “exhibition” season.
BTW, don’t know if it is relevant, but when the Dome was first built, the lack of parking was noted. The city said it wanted to limit parking around the Dome in order to encourage people to use MARTA to relieve the traffic congestion in the city, especially during weekday events.

Great win today for Atlanta. I, along with everyone was pleasantly surprised with our defensive effort. Nice to see the coaching staff starting Bierman over Anderson. Boy did that pay off. Mike Petersen played an incredible game, very physical. He talks about loving to run and hit, he certainly did that today. I also was impressed that Williams was able to come in today to start at corner and contribute, another great pickup from TD.
Tony G is going to have a big year. He has really changed our dynamic on offense. I though M. Ryan did not have a very good game, but he avoided TO’s and got the win, so no complaints. I’m sure he will rebound.

We all know that part of MikeM’s plan is to throw several long, low-percentage passes downfield to keep the safeties honest. Matt was off on these passes, but I certainly don’t think that anyone can really complain about any aspect of the WIN today. Only the kicking game was off, and I think that Elam’s history shows that that was a fluke.

How in the world could SD let Brees just walk away and get nothing in return? I know about the arm surgery and all, but still……nothing? You couldn’t carry a guy for a month or so to see if his arm was OK? Would they rather have Brees now than Rivers?
BTW, who did the Falcons draft with the pick they got from the Texans for Schaub? He looked awful today, AGAIN!!
Speaking of Rivers and Brees, in reference to Tebow. Remember the HATERS who said Rivers’ throwing motion wouldn’t work in the NFL and that Brees was too short and they probably wouldn’t even be drafted?(Well. Brees did last ’til the 2nd round) yadyadayada? Guess what? They were wrong!! I literally do not like the Gators, (except when they beat the pups) but I predict that Tebow will succeed in the NFL. as much for the lack of QBs in general as for his own talents and leadership.
About the lack of QB talent: there are NO 5-star QBs coming out of HS this year according to both Rivals and Scout.

D3, I understand your pain on the parking and let me just say this…arriving at the dome at 11AM should be plenty enough time to find a quaity parking space..geez, it’s 2 hours before kick-off.
I was meeting friends there at 11AM so I arrived around 11:05AM and only to run into crazy traffic around the dome. THe policmend did a very poor job of directing traffic, causing delays all over the dome. As I was looking for parking, I noticed the orange & K lots were basically full & blocked off..folks this is around 11AM!
I guess arriving 3 hours before the game is the way to go…anyway, my wife and I saw a independent lot for $40 parking and almost passed out, no wonder the Falcons were trying to get me to buy parking passes, but I just couldn’t do it for the price they were asking. I had just paid a mortgage payment for season tickets.
To me, parking at the dome is a freakin racket & not to mention…a rip off!!! Why should anyone have to pay $40 to park for a football game??? So after passing on a few $40 dollar lots, I finally found an independent lot near Marta for $25 and although it was not the $10 I was expecting to pay, but at least it was very close to the dome…..
I also agree that the Falcons have allowed this to get out of hand because most of the parking spaces were filled by tail-gaters who were NOT attending the game, they had their tv’s at the tents & vehicles making it harder for us season ticket holders who were actually attending the game. I’m not hating on the tailgaters, but we season ticket folks should be allowed to park also. I will voice my opinion to my falcons account rep and I suggest all of you unhappy parking cagers do the same!

-Who gets your game balls on offense? Defense? Special Teams – Tony G. of course……Mike P….special teams = Kroy B.
-Surprised at defense domination, or you expected it? – surprised
-Concerned about lack of running game? – no, not at all…this is coming from a year of film on us, so we have to switch things up a little.
-Matt Ryan good enough, or should be better? – good enough, but arm strength is stilla question, it showed today that he needs to continue improving.
-How was your tailgating experience? – parking=horiffic! Tailgating, not bad, but not good…could only visit for 15 mins due to not finding a parking space..and now that topic for me is closed.
-Issue with parking, or am I way off base? – it’s valid and sad for the parking prices.

I am going to rain on the parade a little here. Give Houston Kudos for a good game, but remember this: Miami’s WRs are samll in stature and a little average. They are not going to blow your doors off. Also, it is not like Pennington can throw the deep ball. He is a dink and dunk QB throwing alot of underneath stuff. He doesn’t have the ability to stretch the field and keep both CBs and Safties honest. I will give him a good job done, but hold high praise until after the Carolina game and Snisth and Muhammaad. I mean this for all the DBs, not just Houston.

Where’s the love for Lofton? I couldn’t watch the game, but i tracked it on line. Lofton had 11 tkls, 10 solo. I thought the LB play was exceptional. He also forced an important fumble. Lofton had his coming out party. Hope he maintains consistencey. Peterson brought something that KB was lacking. Intimidation, and velocity at the point of attack.
Biermann needs some mad love. He should be our new starting LDE. Put JAnderson on STs. You can’t keep a man on the bench when he is playing like that.
ED, Tebow will not make it as a QB in the NFL. Watch his passes and see how many ducks he throws. He has absolutely no zip on the ball. Think Wuerfell (?) form Spurrire’s days at UF. I watched the UF/Troy game SAT, and every pass was wabbling down the field. If he could just throw a spiral, he would be the #1 player drafted next draft.

Good morning My Cage Fam…
A weekend in which the old heart muscles were truly tested. Glad that the Noles won, CBrass got her B-day present in the form of a UGA win, and the Falcons looked great!!
First, like our esteemed CEO, I have to eat some crow. I have been critical of BVG at times in this blog, questioning his abilities. I AM SORRY COACH. That was one hell of a game plan you called on Sunday. TD, is a genuius. Peterson and Williams made IMMEDIATE impacts on the D. Like Sarah said, if you were there, you saw that Babs was a terror on the inside of the line. He BLEW UP Ronnie Brown on one play for a huge plss behind the line of scrimmage that I loved. Biermann (Sarah is going to retire her Kerney jersey now) looked great. Abe, bum knee and all, looked great.
Back to the LB corps. When it matter, duded were making the plays. Nicholas, Lofton, and Peterson looked outstanding. Effort, hustle, and a hell of lot of intensity. I loved it.
The front seven was so impressive that I had to check my program and binoculars at times just to make sure that DeCoud and Coleman were on the field.
Second, the offense looked a little out of sync early, but hey, when it needed to click, it did. Elam had a bad day but I am not worried at all. When it will matter most, dude will come through!!
D3 and Dean 21, I did the parking pass thing in my second year as a STO. I was frustrated like D3 on three occasions in that season and personally said the hell with it. I park at Lakewood/Ft McPherson (I come up from the south) and ride MARTA into the city. After that, I just mingle among the folks over on the fountain side of the GWCC. I would suggest unless you just have an absolute TG Jones, try MARTA. Works well for me.
CBrass and Sarah, REMEMBER, I’m on the night beat this week so I will not have computer access at work due to security issues. Stirg MUST ge permission from myself, CBrass, or Sarah before he can put ANY comments into the blog!!!

Dean 21, you said JA98 had a good game. I watched the entire game and used DVR to watch it again last night. JA98 didn’t record one single defensive stat in the game. I watched Biermann beat their right tackle all day and as usual JA98 was locked up with him. Opposing tackles all ways get him locked down every time. Other than a tip pass I didn’t see much of nothing from JA98. The Dolphins only score of the game came when JA98 came in the game to give Biermann a breather. Pennington rolled out to the side of JA98 and of course there was no pressure. It was the most time Pennington had to throw all day. Just curious as to watch you saw that would make you say he had a good game?

jaosn, I’m still crying over that one. But the ‘Maker nation rose up and played with that pride we are accustomed to down there along US84. You should be proud of that young team that Cairo is fielding. They will grow as the season progresses. They may not make a deep playoff run this season but they are loaded for the future. Great game. The Pilcher is safe in Grady County for another year.
And I will give you and D3 all the credit. You guys kept up the defense of BVG and educated me when I was doubting him. Again Coach, I ask your forgiveness. Dude called a damned good game yesterday and he had his defense playing with an aggression that I have not seen in ATL in a long, long time. Someone compared it to the great Grits Blitz of the past; don’t know if I will go that far but it was DAMNED impressive.

It is incredible what improved play in the linebacker corps can do for a team. Take a look as this line Cage fam:
Season opener last year vs. Detroit: Boley 7, Brooking 3, Lofton 4, Nicholas 1. No interceptions, no fumbles recovered or forced.
Yesterday: Lofton 10 tackles, 1 FF, Peterson 7 tackles, 1 Int, 1 FF, Nicholas 6 tackles.
Abe had three sacks last year in the opener and they accounted for all the sacks in the game. Abe AND Biermann had 2 each on Sunday with Koy adding a FF.
LOVE IT!!! For the third time, I admit my wrongs. Sorry, Coach BVG. One hell of a job.

D3,
Outstanding job once again. Sorry to hear that you had a terrible time leading up to the game.
jason,
I had the same thoughts about Houston. He should have been flagged for interference when that dude made that awesome catch. I just didn’t see where his awesome play came from. In that case we have to give Kudos to all of the CB’s. Honestly all of the DB’s had a day off with the outstanding play of the DL and the LB’s. We’re really going to see what our secondary is made of next week when Steve Smith comes to town and the following week when we go up against Mr. Brady, Wes Welker and Randy Moss that’s when were going see what our D is made of. I’m not trying to put a damper on things but as Jason stated Miami’s receivers is just average and Pennington with is noodle arm we really can’t get a grade on what the secondary is made up just yet.
I have to give it up to Ovie. I didn’t know that was his first touchdown since he left Baltimore. Turner just didn’t have anywhere to go until the end of the game when he had a couple of nice runs. When they hit him they hit him and wrapped up. He didn’t have any yards after contact. Ryan was just off at first but he put the ball where it needed to go when he had to make a play. Gonzo…I mean what can you say? The guy took those defenders to school on his TD run. Loved when he just tossed that guy to the side…LOL That catch that he laid out far was beautiful!!! Norwood is just dangerous when he touches the ball. Everything that was thrown to White was either under or behind him at times. Once Matty get’s going the offense will be just fine.
Biermann played his butt off. Jason if I’m not mistaken he did start opposite Abe. Abe was his usually self. That bull-rush he put on Jake Long was a thing of beauty. As far as JA98 goes I’m not going to waste my time. To not even make a tackle is a new low for him. He need to refund ABlanks his money right away. Pete, Lofton, and Nicholas played lights out. I give Pete alot of heat during the preseason and he made me eat my words with his play yesterday and I have no problem admitting that I was wrong. That hit he put on that TE is must bone crushing and who knew had range like that to snag that INT and to return it a good distance.
I hope that we’re able to keep up this outstanding defensive play. I’m not worried about Elam. I watch his interview yesterday and he say that he will get things corrected.

CBrass, I’m not as worried about Steve Smith as I was this time last year. First, IMPORVED LB play will result in a more aggressive pass defense scheme over last season. We are faster and MORE AGGRESSIVE at the WLB position than we were last year. Second, turnovers lead to a quick advantage for Carolina last season when we lost that first game in Charlotte. We were not built to facilitate a sustained passing game in the comeback mode. Weapons are more abundant this year.
Third, CB play was also MUCH improved in the second meeting with the Panthers. Foxworth held Muhammed in check wth far fewer yards thanhe had in the first game against the young Grimes. Smith was Smith.
Play aggresive, stay consistent in the playing of the game, and add in a sack or two from the DT position…that should be more than enough to handle a Panther game that will be looking to make a statement against a division rival on Sunday. They can still run, they still have Smith, and we can not look past them.
One game at a time…or as Herm Edwards would say, we play to win the game.

Oops…one correction. I did not mean to say turnovers. I meant to say quick strikes by Carolina lead to the advantage. Big pass plays to Muhammend and Smith and poor support from the LBs and the DL.
My bad…corrected on the spot.
I do not see a repeat of that from this year’s DL and LB sets.

What a game; what a game! At first, I thought it would be unfair to grade our defense against Miami’s offense; the “wildcat” is too proned for turnovers. Still, it was an impressive showing and I tip my hat to our defensive front seven.
SeminoleWarrior, I still have a player in tonight’s game. Our contest is not over. Still, I won’t welch; I’m a man of my word.
I got my a$$ spanked yesterday (no pun intended, WR) in Fantasy Football. You have to admit though, Warrior, it was a pretty even matchup, with the exception of Adrian Peterson. What he did was sick. Dude blew up for 39 fantasy points. How in the hell am I going to compete with 39 points? That was absolute sickness. Still, a win is a win and I won’t welch on a bet. After tonight, if I lose the contest, I’ll seek permission to enter the cage, until Wednesday.
Good game, Seminole! I’m still flying with these birds though…What a freakin’ game.
D3, next time set up a tent the night before the game. Spend the night and tailgate the next morning. That’s what I would’ve done. I remember when the Falcons were so bad that you find parking space in the executive parking lot.

WOW! What a weekend! First I get free tickets to the Georgia game and had a blast! That had to be one of the best games I’ve ever seen live. And then Sunday rolled around like Christmas morning. My predictions on the D were close. Abe got me 2 sacks instead of 1 1/2 and Biermann got me my 2 sacks instead of JA98. But that is the kind of D I love to see. Smart, hard hitting, passionate Defense! JA98 didn’t get me any sacks be he did flush the QB out of the pocket several times to allow someone else to make a play which is his normal “almost there” play.
Damn is it Sunday yet??

Great Mon(dane) Day Cagers! Sure is nice waking up 1-0 after an excellent win……….
FalconFever – Sure was a great start by our DEF
Chip – Very true. Kroy is our future star at DE. He absolutley crushed Jake Long on one of his sacks.
Little Bird – I was shocked at how much our D contained Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. Excellent start.
Dean21 – I was surprised at the Dolphin fans, there weren’t as many in the Dome as I thought, but they were some unruly jokers. All they had to cheer for was refs, challenges, and trick plays. Matty looked a little off, but you know he’ll correct it. No mistakes.
Ed – Totally agree. TD’s move looked masterful once again. Thanks for props.
Boxcarar – Perfectly answered questions. I was close to giving Biermann the DEF game ball, but Peterson just had to get it. You going to watch Hogs vs. Dogs this sat.?
KJinCton – My intention is not to throw tailgating in general under the bus. Over the past five years, I have had an amazing experience heading to and enjoying tailgating. We got there at 10am, pretty sure that we wouldn’t have an issue. We simply can’t get there any earlier because we have a 5 month old and just getting to the game is difficult enough. As I stated, some of it was my fault, but what pissed me off was there being thousands of spaces available at 11am(drove around for an hour), and they were all “passes only”. They just need to be honest and tell season ticket holders that if you don’t buy a pass or get there at the crack of dawn than don’t bother. Glad you had a good experience.

Good morning cage
Got to love what we saw yesterday. The D was just great D3 .I have to give the ball to Bierman but this is a hard one because so many played good. The O line looked OK but Matty lost protection a lot .Matts game was not as good as he could be but I think that was due to the first game jitters .If he would have been more on with his throws then it could have been a lot bigger win . Gonzo gets the ball on the O hands down.
Elam got to get his game going better .Theres gona be a lot of games this year were 3 points may decide the win.Bierman also gets the ball with S T .
The D surprised me I really was not looking for them to do as well as they did.
I think the running game will come around and they will do better .Miami put all there time in stopping the run therefore opening the door far the pass with the weapons we have .I look for other teams now to try and stop this and also that will open back up the run for Turner & Norwood more.
Don’t do the tailgate thing so I have no comment there.
Parking is not going to get better because all the home games will probably be sell outs.My wife works in the IBEW building and has to fight for a spot there on braves games.I suggest Marta.
Looking ahead to this weeks game I think the Panthers to go 0 & 2 .Did Carolina really play that bad or was Philly just that good ?
SW glad your noles got a win .I thought my home county ,Grady, would be given you guys the pitcher but I guess not.How where things down in Gods country US84.

D3 – that’s why we get on at Brookhaven each week. Parking is $$ and I don’t do well in traffic, read bad temper – only with traffic. I walk from MARTA to the gulch and hook up with friends or if no time for that hang out in Falcons Landing. We take beer in a little cooler that then serves as a little purse for sunglasses and whatnot. The DOME doesn’t care as long as there is no longer beer in it. It’s much better and less stressful plus no chance of DUI so that’s a plus.
Love this new D!!!!!!

Ed-Covington – Thanks for the ups. What an amazing start to the season. And our OFF wasn’t even clicking on all cyclinders. I’ve never had an issue until yesterday. The traffic management was pathetic also. People basically waited 30 minutes to be told they couldn’t park in the yellow lot.
tyler – Good points. Peterson had a great game and looks like Grimes may have finally lost his starting spot. Williams made that transition quick. They need to lock up Williams, otherwise we’ll be in the same position again next year.
Flappin’ Falcon – Kroy had a HUGE day. He manhandled All-Pro Jake Long on several plays.
downsouth – I wanted that shutout too, but oh well. Great game.
dean21 – The lot was full around 10 and 10:30. My wife and I just refuse to pay $40 for 2-3 hours of tailgating. We can’t afford it anyway.Very disappointed in the overall experience. We’ll just take Marta from now on. Great point on letting Falcons reps know. Also, they weren’t even allowing people in the marshalling yard, which has tons of space.
NY Falcons – Nicholas did have a very good game as well, he looked great in pass drops and coverage.
Krebs – How ’bout that UGA game? Looks like you were in a nail-biter till the end. Falcons looked great. Since Van Gorder left, UGA’s defense is a damn joke. Any QB can simply march down the field at will.
Seminole – Great game, huh? I’ll gladly eat crow on our DEF, because they played lights out. You’re right on the parking pass. Money is just really tight. And they supposedly aren’t even selling them anymore. A joke all around.
long time falcon – Right on. JA#98’s time has passed. As soon as cap space allows, he’ll be gone.
jason & CBrass – UGA simply will not dominate they way we used to under Richt if he refuses to make changes on the defense. It is a joke and I have completely come to the assumption that Martinez should go, but he won’t because Richt will not make a change. He argues that we keep winning, but we are “under-achievers” to the max as a Georgia team, particularly on defense. There is too much talent to be giving up 30-40 points to virtually everyone we play. I think Bobo is ok, but Martinez is pathetic. Any QB can simply march down the field at will. Our players played hard, but we won in spite of coaching. Glad you had a good time CBrass. “Under-Achieving” is our identity as a UGA team, particularly on defense.
More later tonight, have a great day……………

D3, great post as usual, and special props to your FFL team potential for a comeback win over JJ. He only has Randy Moss left, and You have Phillip Rivers playing a very poor Oakland team without their best corner, plus you have Fred Jackson from Buffalo. Talking trash is one thing but to pretty much declare yourself a winner only to have a defeat snatched from the jaws of victory could ruin the day for JJ and the playa.
Seminole, what a great showing by AP, which lead to the spanking that you issued, if not for Brees I would have been on the wrong end of a beatdown also. I got a combined 12 pts from 2WR, 1RB, and 1WR/RB, but I noticed that things appear to be working out as I said earlier, as AP goes, so goes Percy Harvin and I didn’t even start him this week.
As for the Falcons, its only one game but you have to love the speed that the defense was able to show. For those who were at the game pointing out the impact that Babs had remember this, just as Abe needed the help from another DE, Babs had a DT next to him with speed and explosion which allowed him to take advantage of the skills that he had already flashed. Its alot easier to gameplan for a speedy DT and a stop gap clog DT, then it is for two speedy DTs with speedy DEs coming from the outside.
Speaking of DEs of course Jamaal has the big 1st round salary cap figure to deal with, but Chauncey just got a nice raise, and between the two of them they didn’t have the kind of impact that Biermann had. As bad as that sounds its still nice to know that the Falcons have a very good defensive line rotation available for their convenience and that is with Trey Lewis not even being active.

Greetings Cagers!!!! Nuff respect to one and all!! Unca’ Bob, while I was reading the posts my mind ran on you. How is it going my brother? Everything’s cool?
D3, bigups to you my ‘breddren’ for the gargantuan effort you have been making to keep this ‘machine’ rolling.
Fellow Cagers, isn’t it a good day to be a Falcon fan? We can celebrate today and then start preparing for Carolina. Don’t be fooled however by the seemingly wounded Panthers. Instead let’s adopt the mantra……when a man is down keep him down!!! (Didn’t mean to bring out the mean side of me but that’s life in the NFL, just ask the 2008 Detroit Lions). The Panthers always seem to perform very well against us so we have to get on them very early and very often.
In a previous blog I said Carolina has never, like us, had a back-to-back winning season. They however, are in a different spot than we are. I think they are rather fragile, especially at the QB position. Jake Don’tcomehome, must be worried now and lacking in confidence to have 2 devastating performances back-to-back (from last playoff game). Furthermore Carolina signed him to a nice fat contract with something like $20M guaranteed. Can you imagine the pressure he must be feeling regardless of what he may say to the media? I would not like to be a Panther fan today. I give anything to listen in to those talk shows right now. But I digress because we have the same reputation of not having a winning record in successive seasons. However, with the foundation we now have, we do not, and I repeat do not intend to go back there.
How about our defense? Outstanding for a first game and to think we have not gelled yet!!! Does make you feel very optimistic doesn’t it? Like some of us on this blog, I am not too worried about our rushing defense or our kicking game for that matter. Our guys (OL, Turner and Elam) are too good to be kept down all year. I know we will rise up and respond to the challenge. Let’s keep the faith.
Anybody knows the status on Peria Jerry? Is he OK? I was watching the game and saw when he and Peterson went down. I know Peterson seems to be OK but any word on Jerry? Let me know please. Great job by our DL, they were aggressive all day.
Go Falcons!!!
Nuff respect everytime!!!!

You’re right. I love Richt to death but it’s time he let WM go. It’s just crazy how their TE was open the entire game. The couple of times that he was covered Garcia didn’t know what to do…the TE was their only weapon. Until WM is let go we will continue to only win 10 games an nothing more. There is entirely to much talent on D to be giving up nearly 40 pts to a horrible South Carolina team.

D3, Both CWM and Bobo need to go. The running game cannot just disapear for over a half of football. And that is what happens on O week after week. CMR is slowing losing that glowing charm he once had over the DAWG Nation. Think about it what does he actually do as a HC? He no longer runs the O; just oversees it. He has no hands in the D or ST. We all know he sucks at clock management. He even has a problem getting players motivated and ready to play. I am digusted with the Dawgs play over the last 2= years. One last thing on CMR, with endzone celebration of 2 years ago we can no longer get a close play, or call in our favor. Probably won’t until CMR is gone. I saw Jones get a BS flag once again on a good tackle. It was said he horse collared tackled. He clearly grabbed both sides if the shoulder pads and threw the guy down. On AJ’s longets catch and run a Cock defender brought him down by his helmet. Tore AJ’s helemt off, right in front of the referee, and nothing. No flag. And not one comment made by the commentators. This is the crap that UGA gets for CMR’s endzone celebration. All in all it was a very entertaing football game from a casual fan’s prepesctive. But froma Bleeding Red-Black Fan, it was another in a crappy game by crappy coaches who have some of the best assembled talent in the country. What would UF have done? I say 56-10 at the least, but they also would have been ready to play.
Sorry about the UGA post; just had to vent. Now back to football. I say the front 7 should get the game ball on defense. They dominated and controlled the game. CBras, I didn’t know if Biermann started or not. I followed the game on line. Had to work the weekend. Whether or not, he needs to be the permanent starter. Davis and JAnderson both are just not getting the job done.
Looking at the Carolina game, we should win. We all know CAR is no pushover. They play us hard every time out. Pressure will be on the DBs to control the WRs. As reference to an earlier post on Foxworth, We no longer have him. Grimes and Houston have shown they can’t handle Smith and Muhamaad. Hopefully Williams will control MM. We will have to double Smith. The key to this game is the same as Miami. We have to stop the run. We stop the run and BVG can bring all the insane blitzes and keep Dellhomme off balance. But it all starts with stopping the run. As for offense,we will pass to set up the run. Norwood impressess with recieving skills out of the backfield. Look for more of the same. With an emphasis on controlling Gonzo, look for MJ to step yp at WR giving RW some one on one matchups outside. Lord knows I need it for my FFL team.

Stirg, it was a great TEAM victory. I honestly did not expect AP to explode like that yesterday. And I love what I got in relief from Julius Jones. JMJ and Gregg Knapp love that zone blocking scheme so I knew against the Rams, I was good there.
UGA fans, I feel your pain. You feel about Martinez they way some of us feel about the validity of Jimbo Fisher in Tallahassee. How in the hell do you let Jacksonville State (a fine school mind you) hang around and nearly pull the greatest upset in the history of FSU football.
The Posse is built for the long term, much like the Process. Like TD and my mentor, Bill Polian, I may make a move here or there. We may even have a blip here or there along the way BUT in the end, we will be in the hunt for it all. That is the way we roll in the TeePee. I’m not going to talk any crap for any player on any day can have a downday (Jason Elam). I have no doubt that you will keep your word. Same bet for the rematch later this season? Now the question is…How will CBrass and/or Sarah handle your requests. I’m with you on the Jeff Garcia issue. Carolina would be crazy not to get him in there quick. There is definately something wrong with Delhomme.
WR, I’m not going to brag for reasons I have already stated. But AP is good for a couple of those performance each season. And I feel the love on Drew Brees; he is my QB in my three Yahoo! leagues.
UnCa Bob (Semper Fi, my brother), glad that you are back in the fold and my prayers continue to be with you. May the Grace prevail as life moves forward for you and yours.
Sarah, have you purchased that Biermann jersey yet? CBrass, he will have to request permission from either you or Sarah, whichever is available, if I am not present.
D3, I’m not surprised at the Dolphins fans and their behavior. Try it in Miami. Hurricane fans are dedicated too but I much rather deal with them than Dolphins fans. Trust me, I make the roll down there each other year.
I think most of the issues with tailgating, traffic, and other things will be resolved if we get the Doraville site for our new stadium. It will still have MARTA access, the site is HUGE (old GM plant there at the moment), and there will be better access from the highway than the congestion that is downtown. But will we pay the price in that we will go the dreaded PSL route as opposed to the current ticket configuration.

DT Vince Wilfork. Just remember that name for next year in FA. TD scouted him and drafted him in New England. He is a free agent this offseason and at 6′2, 325, he is just the type of interior big DT that would solidify the interior. Babs and Jerry are speed tackles. Lewis and Wilfork would allow us to go big when needed. Just a thought.
Personally, OL has priority in the offseason but the Sugar Bear would go crazy to have the five year veterans Super Champion DT on board. Talk about strengthing an already emerging defense.

Seminole, I feel my team is in the same boat, its built for the long haul. The numbers hopefully will improve as the season goes along. TeePee city is built nicely though and you have to give credit where credits due. Not that I’m worried but we don’t face the city but once and its the last game of the season. Not to take anything from my division but Teepee City is in a loaded division which should make things interesting as the season goes on. Like I said not to take any thing from my division, but from top to bottom as far as overall players your division is by far tougher with more known talent. To be fair and impartial if I had to list the five best teams it would be a combination of BlackTalons,Raptors,Teepee City,Bitches, and the War Eagles in no particular order, and 4 of those five are in the same five team division.

Warrior, good call on Wilfork. What an addition that would be. Would certainly move us into the number one contenders for the championship. Abe, Beer-man, Babs, Hip-Hip Peria, 3-Lew and Vince? OMG! That’s too scary to even consider…good call!
Yes; we are definitely on for a bet, on our re-match. In your absence, its simple, I’ll ask either Sarah or CBrass (or you) for permission to enter the cage. The requests will begin tonight, after the game, and will continue to Wednesday. Fair enough?
Let’s talk about them birds now. I, myself, got some words to eat. MR. Abraham, you showed up yesterday. Jake Long is a beast and you still managed two sacks. Good job buddy; and I apologize for the “acting-like-a-girl” reference. Keep up the good work.
I admire how Coach Smitty refered to the defenive line as “the starting seven”. Cagers, it is true; in order for our defense to prosper in this league, we’re going to have to play the hell out of Abraham, Anderson, Jerry, Babineaux, Lewis (what was wrong with him yesterday?), Biermann, Davis and Sidbury (oops, that’s eight. Who was smitty omitting?). All are going to have to participate, as a team, in order for us to beat the likes of New England, Phili and New Orleans. Yesterday was a great win; but I agree with jason, the true test will be against Carolina and New England. BTW, don’t think for one second that Carolina is going to come out and look that poorly next week. Let’s stay focused and bend them (no pun intended, WR) like the Eagles did.

Wow! What a game! We should have listened to you, Coach Smith, preseason DOESN’T MEAN SQUAT!!!
KROY!!! Another round for The BEER MAN! And Abraham, with his “Am I going right or am I going left, Jake? And then he straight bull rushes him right to the ground…That was GREAT!
In last year’s opener 3 of the 4 top tacklers were corners and safeties (Coleman 6, Grimes 6, Milloy 5) and this year the top tacklers were all LB’s. Stellar.
D3, sorry to hear your parking woes. Sounds like the nights after the Braves games where the city police block off every street, even the streets that lead to the highway (you can see the highway from your car as they send you off in another direction), and force you and a huge line of cars straight into downtown.
Stifling the big play: Pennington was quoted as saying that the Falcons were playing 2 and 3 deep the entire game. If our linebackers and D Line keep playing the way they did, our secondary will be licking their chops for interceptions this year.
SW, I think Herm said it this way: You play…To win…The game!
My favorite will always be Denny Green: “But they are who we thought they were, and we let ‘em off the hook!”

The bet is good and the ladies can handle it I am sure. Thanks ladies.
Second, TD loves Wilfork. Smitty and BVG will too. And I think, just as was the case with TG, the chance to be a part of something special in time, could be enough to bring Wilfork home. What rotational depth with him playing along the sides of Abe, Biermannm, Babs, and Hip Hip Peria. Lewis and Hip Hip seem a little too injury prone for me but there is GREAT depth there. And why go after a high round draft pick when you can get experience, title pedigree, and a hard work all in one package. Only five years on those tires; adds great presence and depth. I say go for it, TD. Remember though, you heard it here first. If I nail this, I may ask TD to become his assistant. LOL.
Third, Abe’s contract is up in two years. At that stage, he will have been in the league for 12 years so will we overpay to keep him. No. Given the continuing emergence of Biermann and what we see in Sidbury, Abe will be allowed to test the waters in FA or resign for less.
WR, you are right. Right now, that division is hell. The CEO created a mini-SEC with that division. Going to he a heck of a season. Keith Jackson would have fun calling our games!!
Lastly, Stirg’s point on the Panthers can not be understated. That is a proud team over there in Charlotte. They will make adjustements. And they can still run the rock; it only takes ONE big play to change the character of a game. But then, the character of the Falcons defense IS NOT the same as well. It WILL be a war in the Dome on Sunday. And it will be Jason Elam, yes, JASON ELAM, that is the difference. You heard it here baby!!
Laters fam, I’m breaking right. Keep it real, keep it safe, and I will see you on the other side!!

Steve Smith, Steve Smith, Steve Smith. That’s all I hear this week. She has it for him like Sarah has it for Kerney, Biermann, and the Barber Twins. Love ya Sarah….LOL.
It’s all good though…I was born in September BUT love me some October.

Thanks JWW on Wilfork being from Miami…I’ll be there Firday woohoo! And Abe blowing up Jake Long on that sack was awesome!! And what made it so great was the speed of the play. It was like BAM! Jake Long is on his back then BAM! Chad was on his back like damn where did that train come from….Pro-Bowl for Jake Long last year but not Abe…guess we know who the pro-bowler was on Sunday. And it wasn’t Jake Long. I can’t wait to see my sister husband this Friday he’s a HUGE Fin’s fan so I know he’s going to be a little butt hurt. And GT hasn’t even got to town yet.

Stirg,
Yes. Abe lowered his head and just ran him right over. Just as Lil’Dave said it happened so fast it was like Bam down goes Long then Bam down goes Pennington. If I find a video of it I’ll send it to ya.
I would like to know why Biermann wear #71 also.
SW,
I agree Elam is going to get it together. It was just shocking to see him miss 2 field goals and a extra in one game.

I agree on the Carolina assessment, the Cats are a proud bunch and will try to rebound from their humiliation, but at the same time Jake and starting to look like Vinny Testaverde when he was in Tampa Bay. Psychologically speaking if the Falcons pick Jake early it could be all down hill for the Cats after that. Defensively the Cats didn’t match up well with the birds last year without the birds having Gonzo, so this year they could really be put in a bind.
Seminole, your right my friend that is a mini SEC the boss set up and on the other side we have a mini ACC going on, there’s alot of parity any team can come out of this division or one team could just get hot and run the table.
As for the bull rush that ABE put on Jake Long, I don’t know if you could call that a bull rush, usually when you bull rush someone, you push them into the backfield, as for what Abe did to Long he pushed him completely to ground like he was the school bully and wanted to take Long’s lunch money.

I really can’t say anymore than everone else has other that what a suprise the Defense layed on us yesterday! I can’t wait for the kittens next week now!! Delhomme is going to be on his back alot and I see at least 3 turnovers!
In regards to the parking..At 11:40 the CNN parking decks were advertising parking for $20, and there were no lines going in. I think the parking is cheaper on the east side of the Dome, and if you park in the CNN lots you are right over the gulch to go do some tailgating. I myself have the I lot this year for $9 a game which is two blocks further but well worth the time in saving money. They also sell to the public for $15 bucks. So there is more availability and afordable parking on the Int. Blvd side of the Dome.

Long Time Falcon:
To respond to why I thought JA98 had a good game was that he turned up his motor which had been seriously lacking. I’d say that alone was enough for a good day for him. I was at the game and I saw him running around in the backfield at pennington…batted a pass down, heck, he almost had at least 2 sacks, but both times was held..
Miami’s OL was holding our D linemen all game and was not being called by the refs! JA98 stood fast in the run gaps helping to contain Ricky & RBrown. Of course like always, it was only my opinion. The entire defense played with high intensity!!
I also noticed 2 late hits out of bounds that were not called, the refs were not in sync as well…..but the dome was rockin!! Like one guy posted earlier, way too many enemy jersies, geez for a moment, I thought the game was being played in Miami! I’m not sure what the problem is, but Falcons seats are being bought up by the enemy too much!
Again, just my opinion….

I want to also mentioned that K Bierman played a great game! The Falcons are using him the right way at this time and he is taking full advantage of coming in during passing downs and getting after the QB!!

The policmen did a very poor job of directing traffic, causing delays all over the dome. As I was looking for parking, I noticed the Orange & K lots were basically full & blocked off..folks this was around 11AM!
I guess arriving 3 hours before the game is the way to go…anyway, my wife and I saw a independent lot for $40 parking and almost passed out, no wonder the Falcons were trying to get me to buy parking passes, but I just couldn’t do it for the prices they were asking. I had just paid a mortgage payment for season tickets alone.
