Roster Competition Co-Champs and Final Roster Analysis

Final 53-Man Roster

Training Camp Officially Over (CCompton/AJC)

Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s finally here: GAME WEEK! After suffering through a long, hot summer filled full of no football, game week is finally upon us. The Combine, Draft, Training Camps, OTA’s, Preseason games, & fantasy football are just fillers for the real thing which is oh so close now. All the work, sweat, blood, and tears have been building up to this week, where a new season finally dawns. Rosters have been shaved and few minor tweaks may be done, but teams across the country are in their final countdown to gameday.

Final Roster Analysis
They were no huge surprises when the final cuts came down to make it to the 53 man protected roster, but there were a few intriguing moves that left some fans a little curious:

Earned the 3rd QB Spot (CCompton/AJC)

Parker Wilson over Shockley
The battle has been well documented for some time now, and this may have been a shock to casual fans, but it was generally assumed by many who had followed Shockley for several years. When Parker Wilson was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent many assumed it was just taking a chance on a QB that had been successful at Alabama, or thought dumping Chris Redman’s salary might be in the future. But Parker Wilson showed what’s great about the training camp in the NFL: if you take advantage of a given opportunity, then may the best man win. Shockley was just never able to find consistency, but he surely will be picked up quickly and hopefully find success. Did Parker Wilson earn it or did DJ get a fair shot?

Booker over Bergeron, Ferguson, Kelly, and Williams

Booker Showed Age Not Always a Factor (inquisitr.com)

Marty Booker proved that age is not always a factor in claiming a job on an NFL roster. The injury to Harry Douglas certainly presented a huge opportunity for several receivers looking to work into a fairly high-powered offense. Booker made the most of the opportunity by showing some flashes from his old form making some nice catch and runs. Robert Ferguson showed some nice glimpses on special teams, but not too many as a receiver. Bergeron had a few good catches and looks to be on the Falcons practice squad and may do the same thing Eric Weems did this year. Aaron Kelly just never seemed to catch on and be able to put his massive skill set together. Chandler Williams had a couple nice plays, but not enough to get him noticed. Surprised that Bergeron didn’t make the roster? Shocked that Kelly didn’t get a practice squad spot? Good choice on taking Booker over the other wide receivers?

Haynes Biggest Roster Surprise?

Verron Haynes over Thomas Brown
This was one of the more puzzling moves on the roster. Generally, fans assumed that if the Falcons carried 5 running backs that Brown would take the fifth spot with his speed and special teams ability. Verron Haynes had some nice catches out of the backfield in preseason games, but Thomas Brown did as well. Haynes was the third down back for the Steelers for quite some time and is a great blocker out of the backfield, but still a slightly interesting move. Brown may be a good candidate for the practice squad. Was this one a big shock? Rather have kept Brown over Haynes? More bad UGA news after pathetic showing yesterday in Stillwater?

Thomas Johnson over Vance Walker
Many thought that Walker would be kept due to his decent performance early on in camp and with the fear that he may get snatched up if put on the practice squad, but since there evidently was only one spot, taking Thomas Johnson was a no-brainer having one of the best training camps of any player on the roster. Johnson and Walker were almost identical in build and frame so trying to keep both of them obviously wasn’t a priority. Having Jamaal Anderson being able to move inside and play defensive tackle also likely played a role in the decision. Disappointed Walker didn’t make it on the active roster? Will Walker last on the practice squad? Upset Falcons didn’t try to keep Walker AND Johnson?

Adkins Beats out Two Vets (AtlantaFalcons.com)

Spencer Adkins over Robert James and Jamie Winborn
One of the biggest surprises of the final roster was Spencer Adkins earning the sixth linebacker spot. Although the Falcons didn’t take a chance on several “project” players, Adkins evidently showed enough potential on special teams and a high skill set that warranted a spot. Jamie Winborn seemed to be the logical choice with his experience and high tackle total from last year. Robert James was never able to get any rhythm after suffering a concussion in last year’s training camp. Having 3 out of 5 LBs near or over the age of 30 may have also played a role in the final decision. Seriously surprised that the 6th round pick beat out the other two favorites? Interested the Birds didn’t keep veteran Winborn?

Practice Squad
Very interesting choices on the practice squad which includes DJ Shockley, Michael Butterworth, Troy Bergeron, Jose Valdez, Robert James, Vance Walker, Maurice Lucas, and Glenn Sharpe. Most names are pretty obvious picks, going with the younger players who can develop on the practice squad and get another shot at the roster next year, or be called up due to an injury. Kind of pleasantly surprising to see Shockley get picked back up on the practice squad. Assuming Shockley doesn’t get picked up by another team, could the Falcons be thinking about the future with Redman’s large contract expiring after this year? Curious who’s names were not on the practice squad: William Middleton and Aaron Kelly . The fifth round draft pick must have seriously under-whelmed during his opportunity in training camp, with the Falcons electing to go with Glenn Sharpe over Middleton. Aaron Kelly evidently didn’t have a very good camp either, not being able to put his serious skill set to use to warrant a spot on the practice squad. Happy that Shockley was retained on the practice squad? What happened to the fifth round pick Middleton? Upset that Kelly didn’t have a better camp?

And what you’ve all been waiting for…………….

VERY VERY COOL D3 !
I liked the way Booker looked with Redman in the Charger pre game.I think there could be a lot of good things yet to come from him.

Now these players in the practice squad can also be traded or made deals with right.?

Shockley just plan and simple got beat out.I wish he would have made it with us tho .Now I guess his days are numberd in the red and black..?

Great work as always D3. I agree w/ you about T Brown not being kept as the fifth RB. Most surprising of all the cuts (assuming they keep 5 RB’s).

The upcoming game w/ Miami concerns me now because of our lackluster defensive showing. My thinking though is that the Falcons will generate more heat on the QB through scheming and blitzing than what they’ve shown so far. Otherwise the secondary will be in for a long day.

I like Spencer Adkins upside. We have the best special teams in the NFL and he will be part of it . Falcons should collect more Hurricane and less Bulldog.

I thought that Middleton was picked too high in draft. They could’ve picked one of the TE’s still available. I think Casey was still available then. Could’ve picked Middleton in supplemental draft. What say you?

D3, I demand a re-count!!! JK, Congrats SW & Tyler!

D3,like you said, most of us knew DJ was falling behind and didn’t earn a spot on the reg roster…we also knew CRedman would be the 2nd string QB and hopefully we will never see the 2nd or 3rd string guy in a game unless we blew a team out….

The other cuts were expected with the exeception of VHaynes &
J Winborn, I believe youth was the call for the LB position and Haynes was kept in case of a pick up or 2…one being already made in CB Williams from Jacksonville. The P-squad was planned to develope certain players and DJ may have been given a token spot and hopefully he will be picked up by another team…

I agree, game week is exciting!! I will surely get to the terror dome early on Sunday…I’ll be in touch during the week so maybe we can finally hook up..

I must say, your posts are addictive and usually right on time…how about your last one going 7 pages strong…long way from where we started huh? This has been by far the best blog on AJC as for as Falcons talk!

UB-Sorry to hear about your Mother.

Congrats, to our roster picker co-winners.

D3- Outstanding work with the new blog.
I was a mildly surprised Thomas Brown did not make the practice squad, guess his chronic injury situation was a factor.
It is true as, (L.T.F pointed out) even the most ardent Bulldog supporters that were pulling for Shockley to make the final 53 knew, he had not progressed enough to EARN an roster spot.
It`s nice to know that, the Falcons staff was seeing the same thing most of our fans were seeing in the play and development of our young Corner backs, with their confidence level being so high that, they signed to new corners within the last week.

The Miami Dolphins went 4/0 in the preseason and have been playing very well. They are coming in with sky high confidence, looking to get off to a good start in defending their NFCE Crown.
Their defence has played particularly well and they have a very good one tandem of running backs in Ronnie Brown and Ricky (weed) Williams.

For lovers of smash mouth football.
Dolphins at Falcons should be your delight.

Ken, this is in response to you’re last post on the other blog. I’m floored that you would now try to “spin” that the new corners being brought in have nothing to do with the play of Houston. Truly astounding my friend. And for the record I wasn’t singling out Houston as the sole reason for the acquisitions but you better believe he is a big reason for them. Ken, for christ sake did you not watch the SAN DIEGO game? And please stop it with the hamstring injury excuse because I know damn well Smitty is not going to put a guy projected to be a starter, at risk, if he was still hurting. No way Smitty put him back out there if he wasn’t ready. I’m not buying that hamstring crap as an excuse. sorry.

As far as JA98 the coaches really don’t have any choice but to keep giving him chances at this point. I don’t think its because they love what he does on the field. Have you watched Biermann play this preseason? The coaches have about 9 million reasons for hanging on to JA98. That would be the salary cap hit we would take for getting rid of him. And since he is untradeable we have no choice but to hang onto him for now. But he is on his way out I can promise you that much.

First, Tye Hill and now, Mike Williams. Two veterans that will add depth, stability, and leadership to a young group of CBs. I think these are great moves. It also shows the strong working relationship that TD and Smitty have. Two smooth moves if they hold up.

Dean21, If shockley is picked up by another team he would have to be signed to the 53 man roster. If one team signs a player from another teams practice squad they have to be added to the active roster. Thats the rule. So I really doubt another team would sign shockley at this point because he would have to learn a whole new offense. Shock can now hopefully continue his development and compete for a roster spot next year. Redman will surely be gone next season.

The move with Shockley is a good one. One more year on the squad and he can continue to work under Coach Mad Mike as well, most importantly, QB coach Bill Musgrave. Next season, he will return to the Falcons active roster as Redman will be released provided JPW and Shock continue to evolve under the tutelage of Coach Musgrave.

Signing Shockley to the practice squad was just about a given.
Every scout team needs a QB.
If for no other reason than to throw to the WR(s) kept on it.
Like D3 pointed out, one injury to a WR and Bergeron is on the 53 man roster.
He needs to stay ready and sharp IMO he was real close to making the cut, I actually this Troy is a better WR than Weems but Weems ST ability made him stick.

D3, sorry I haven’t been around. Getting over the hangover that was this weekend. My makers and Dawgs both lost. I am sitting 0-2 (CHS), 0-1 (UGA), and 0-0 (ATL). I need a win of some sort this weekend for my own sanity. Tough game SAT. Good game, but we (UGA) need to find a QB. My Makers just need to grow up. We are young there.

As for the Falcons. I was not surprised to Booker make the cut. He was outstanding in the SD game. That is what probably earned him the roster spot. I was most surprised at Walker being cut, but I don’t recall hearing his name much in the preseason. Also with JAnderson’s ability to play DT and Johnson playing well…. you can see where I am going. I felt like Middleton was going to the practice squad, I was just holding out hope all TD’s picks would make the team.

We all knew the end was coming for DJ and Brown. DJ just hasn’t had enough snaps under center since High School. He is too raw, and tried to hard. Trying to force things to happen instead of letting them develope. As for Brown, what can you say? I think this was all a health issue. Staying injured cost Brown playing and practice time to improve and develope.

The player I am most concerned about getting cut and signed to the practice squad is Bergeron. I really like him, but I think someone will grab him before the season is over.

Jason, my friend, your hangover is about to get worse. The ‘Dawgs are coming to Thomas Stadium on Friday. And we lost in a horrid display on Friday night; it will be a tough fight but the Pilcher is coming back to Thomasville with us on Friday night. On a bright note though, region play has not yet started so there is still hope.

You made a very good point about Shock. He has been in and out, on the bench for a long time now. If he can continue to get the work in, he will give the Falcons a low cost option at the #3 QWB position next year if they truly think that JPW is for real.

Jason, it can be interpreted as a overall good sign if, some of your draft picks don`t make the team and your not signing other team cuts but your cuts are being picked up by others.
That means your roster is fairly solid and some 2nd day selections chances of earning a slot is iffy.
I am not too worried about some other team grabbing Bergeron.
He would have to learn their system on the fly and it`s doubtful he would be of much use in that situation.
About any team that had a sudden need for a WR would more likely pull one off their own PS, who is more familiar with their verbage and system.

SW, Looks like we will be 0-3. THS was impressive against TCCHS. Dude you just played one of the most physical defenses in the state in Colquit. Not to mention 3 classifications above you. THS may be onto something magical this year. Enjoy the ride. Just remember Pilcher is all about the veer. THS beat it once already this year.

BT, not down… just a little surprised that’s all. I like alot of us are concerned with 10 the pass rush or lack of, and 2) the overall play of our DBs. The offense is still looking good to me.

Here’s a thouhgt. I am no Coach Smitty, but what if we started Bierrman oppisite of Abe and platoon him with Sid? That would be 2 nonstoppable motors chasing down QBs. You could always run Davis and JAnderson in on obvious run downs. Just a thought. Still looking for a pass rush.

Jason, I love the idea of the DE rotation. I see no reason why Koy B. should not be given a start on Sunday. He has performed as well as anyone else on the roster not named Abraham. I think he has just the type of motor we need at the rush position opposite Abe.

Jason-
I am not as worried about the pass rush as some fans might be.
We all know what Abe can do, when it counts.
I had thought that Davis would best Anderson in camp and the preseason.
That did not happen, both looked mediocre at best.
However, Bierman looked fierce against the run and the pass and L.Sid has shown lots of promise with his speed off the edge.
With that, the interior D-line rotation of Babs, Lewis, Jerry and Johnson look to be stout with a nice blend of disruptness and gap control, that unit has quietly progress very well during the preseason.
So far, we have seen nothing but vanilla blitz packages and straight up base set D.
If, I have any concerns about the front seven rotation aganist the run or the pass it is Steven Nicholas.
Many had projected him to have a breakout season, I have seen no signs of it (so far) but I do have confidence in Coy Wire if he can`t get it going?

The secondary is a diffrent issue.
Everybody that is not named Erik Coleman needs to pick up their game in a hurry or they are subject to being replaced.
As S.W. said, Sooner rather than later.

jason

September 7th, 2009
11:23 am

BT, you basicly said the same thing I did in talking about Biermann and Sid. One of the 2 needs to start oppisite Abe, Biermann has earned it with his play in the preseason. I know we played vanilla defense, but plays were still given up. And that is not all due to the pass defense. The pass defense is a concern, especially the DBs, but it all starts with a good pass rush.

SeminoleWarrior

September 7th, 2009
11:45 am

BT/Jason, Biermann will be starting before the end of the season, trust me. His ability to close and make the play behind the line of scrimmage is outstanding. Sid will be situational, maybe a start or two if Abe is injured at some time. But the two give us a solid pairing looking to the future.

As far as the Dolphins are concerned, I personally never count out any team that Bill Parcells has a hand in. They will be ready to rock on Sunday. Chad Pennington is the master of the intermediate passing game so our secondary will get a very effective workout. Fasano is not TG by any means but he is effective and will be a challenge for Nicholas or the nickel DB, Jackson I presume.

long time falcon

September 7th, 2009

Guys I love what Biermann has done as well but the problem with starting him opposite ABE is he has worked exclusively at RDE which is ABE’s side. Believe it or not the transition from one side to the other can be quite awkward for a DE and can require an adjustment period. I posted in the last blog that I was hoping Smitty would move him to LDE in the Baltimore game to see how he responded. I don’t believe that ever happened.I think the coaches plan to use Biermann behind ABE. However, I do believe that ABE will get a lot more plays off to stay fresh and Biermann will play the role of super sub. I think Biermann will see a lot of action on first and second downs.

BT, I’m hoping the reason we haven’t heard anything from Nichols in the preseason is we are saving some suprise blitz packages built around him coming after the QB. One of the biggest reasons coaches were so high on him in the first place was his speed and ability to get after the QB from the linebacking spot. Maybe they unleash him once the regular season starts. I hope thats it! If not just put coy wire back at that spot.

SeminoleWarrior

September 7th, 2009

LTF, I’m with you on the Nicholas situation. His speed was what made him as standout at USF. I think Abe can shift over to the LDE at times as well. Either side he is on is sure to draw extra attention, so that will free up Biermann to make an impact. But do not be fooled…Koy will be on that field much more often this season…and he will make plays.

LTF, I had an interesting point to add to your post. I step away for a sec, and SW steals my thunder.Abe has rotated from one side to the other before. If that is the case then Biermann will be a starter but not a starter. See what I mean. As the game flows, Abe will pop up on the left side with Biermann on the right. With Abe on the right, plug Sid on the left. I say use Davis and JAnderson only in obvious run downs. I don’t trust either at this point. Davis signed the extention, and I haven’t seen him live up to it yet. Been the same as always. The problem here is we don’t need status quo from Davis. He is making starter’s pay, we need starters production.

Happy Holiday!

Congratuations, SeminoleWarrior and tyler! SW, enjoy while it last. Its going to be a sad day when we meet head to head in week 1.

People, calm down; calm down. I’m not one of those that believe in “its only preseason” but I do recognize that our defense was under evaluation. For instance, you must believe that Smitty and company would/will not put our small corners on an island, to be beaten, man-to-man. They didn’t do it last year and they’re not going to do it this season. Those burnt plays that we witnessed of Houston, Grimes and Owens were deliberate. Allowing them to play man-to-man is not only an evaluation of our cornerbacks but it allows us to evaluate the front seven, as well. In addition, why feed a player your playbook when its possible that he won’t be with the team; even worse, he’s piked up by a division foe (i.e., William Middleton).

So, don’t be overly concerned about the lack of play that was displayed by our defense. It was simply an evaluation. Obviously, the evaluation paid off. I would rather determine our weakness during a preseason game, than to try and make adjustments during our bye week.

If Chris Houston is “that bad”, neither TD nor Coach Smitty would have hesitated to make a change. We mave even, still, see Houston start, with the signing of Hill and Williams. Note, Williams is listed as a DB (not CB). After an often injured William Moore, we have no quality depth at safety. Williams can play both positions but I’m almost certain he was signed to add depth to our safety position. I, for one, is very satisfied with where our defense is “headed”. Could they do better? Yes. Would I like to see other (or better) players at cornerback in Atlanta? Yes; there are 30-something DBs ranked higher than Williams. The point is, we’re going to always want the best; we’re going to always want better than what we have. Let’s just coach up what we have and support that.

Do you remember when we had the greatest NFL athlete of all times, playing the cornerback position (Hall of Famer, Prime Time Neon Deion Sanders)? We had a corner playing opposite him, (Tim McKyer, I believe), and we absolutely hated him. He would get burned, even when we’d clear Deion’s side and put the help on the opposite side. McKyer went on to be a pretty good corner, though. It was a system that he had to adapt to. Same thing with our current DB’s. What we witnessed in preseason, will not be the same thing in regular season. Stay tuned, they’ll show up. May not be pro-bowlers but they’ll get that interception, when needed.

Unca’ Bob, You have my sympathy. Keep Up!

Guys, good point about Abe`s ability to rush from both sides, they like to match him up against the slowest tackle creating an instant mismatch and an automatic double team.
IMO, if we don`t get Bierman in the lineup, as often as possible, at this point.
They are doing nothing hurting the team.

Great Labor Day Fellow Cagers! Hope you all are enjoying the day and a wonderful way to kick off GAME WEEK!!!! Tons of match-up analysis coming throughout the week, pitting two of the best turn-arounds in the NFL last year. This one will be a fight to the finish and could be a big omen for the rest of the season.

Birdman – Thanks for the props my man. Booker is certainly a good 4th or 5th WR option. He made a lot of nice catch and runs and I believe his WR ability put him over Ferguson. If Shockley is not picked up by another team, than look for another battle for the 2nd or 3rd QB position next year.

boxcarar – Very surprised that TBrown was not kept on the practice squad, especially since this may be Norwood’s last year in red and black. Kind of locks down the notion that we may draft a RB if Norwood does leave.

Ed – Thanks a ton. Very interesting we didn’t keep TBrown on practice squad. I think we’re all very concerned with our defensive performance. Out of all 4 games, our defense only really had one decent game. That warranted the Tye Hill trade and the Brian Williams pickup, which hopefully turns out to be some great moves.

Bullseye – I’m also glad they elected to go younger and take a chance on at least one project. Peterson, Wire, and Gilbert were all at or over the age of 30. Even though being a UGA grad and fanatic, I would have to agree with you after that pathetic showing against Oklahoma St.

KC – Great point about Middleton. Looks like TD took a pretty big whiff on that one. Which is OK since it was a fifth rounder. Jerry looks like a good pick, jury’s still out on Moore with him being injuried, Owens looks solid, Sidbury was a steal, Garret Reynolds made the team, Adkins made the team, and Walker made the practice squad, so 7 out of 8 isn’t bad. James Casey and Cornelius Ingram were both available. Oh well.

I’ve said this here before – people need to understand positions along the DL. Left DE is different than right DE. Abraham is our starter at R DE, which is the right-handed QBs blindside. Biermann has never played a snap for the Falcons at L DE…….all of his snaps have been either when Abraham has moved over to L DE or when Abraham has been out. So, unless the Falcons decide to change Abrahams starting position, which is highly unlikely, Biermann won’t start.

D3,

Great job again!!! Keeping Haynes was very surprising especially since Brown has special teams capabilities. But as someone stated earlier Brown getting hurt really didn’t help his case. His injury history probably played a factor into it. Keeping Booker I understand. He did play with the first unit a couple of times so to me that said alot. I think Shockley just simply played himself out of the third spot. He didn’t show that he had progressed any while JPW came in and made some strides. I was thinking that Walker would make the team. I had heard many of you say that he was a steal but nothing was really said about him during camp. Hopefully with him on the PS he will develop and make the team next season. I can’t really say much about the LB’s really do not know much about them. It looks that ST play became a fact into this one.

Again D3 great job!!!

Another thing, I like/love Biermann too but something tells me that he is not ready to start. You guys got to get out of the mindset that sacks determine a great defensive end. Sacks are good but if thats all you do, that makes you one-dimensional. For example, we played San Diego a couple preseason games ago and hey absolutely killed us with the screen. Guess who played must of that game at defensive end? Biermann. He may have a high motor and he may even get to the quarterback; but teams scout and will be able to exploit his tendency. That is what makes Biermann a back-up; and that is what makes Anderson a starter.

Later, SW; drive safe! Sorry, I’m going for the “U”.

Seminole – If Abe is healthy, he’ll start. They’ll control his number of snaps this year like they did last year, but he’ll start.

Biermann only plays RDE………..Abe only starts at RDE, though he does rotate between sides after the game starts.

The only way Biermann starts is if Abe can’t. You can’t start two guys at RDE, and you can’t put Biermann at LDE – he’s never played a snap there.

Strig, correct me if, I am wrong but it`s not the RDE`s responsibility to smell out a screen to the strong side of the O`s formation?
That would be on your SLB to at least come up to take out some interference if not make the play and if, I remember correctly those screens that worked went to the O`s strong side?
Blaming Bierman for those could be a reach.

BlackTalon, That they did. I think Biermann can’t play strong side, so…..

nhe, You are right, they both play RDE. What we are saying is that Biermann is a starter, but not. He will play more than enough snaps to be an impact. Whether playing alot of first or second downs, or playing RDE with Abe rotating to LDE, as he is known to do. The important thing is to limit the number of snaps that JAnderson plays, hence Sid playing alot of third downs and obvious passing situations.

LONG TIME FALCON-now who’s doing the spinning? I never said the moves had nothing to do with the play of CHouston. I said the moves weren’t made based on his play alone, like so many want to believe. I made it clear that I thought there were multiple reasons for the moves, like TD and Smitty having 2nd thoughts about getting quicker and faster by relying so heavily on youth, and the poor play of all CB’s, not just Houston. Remember, after releasing VHutchins, and before signing the 2 new CB’s, CHouston was our most experienced CB, with only 2yrs of experience.

Again, I never said Houston wasn’t physically ready to return. I said that players returning from hamstring, groin or muscle injuries often have psychological issues and are often apprehensive about going all out for fear of reinjuring themsleves, and possibly ending their season. This is a major problem for players returning from such injuries. Trust me, there’s a big difference in the two situations and an even bigger difference in what I said and what you’e implying I said. LONG TIME FALCON, YOU’RE THE ONE DOING ALL OF THE SPINNING.

It’s obvious, to me at least, our coaching staff isn’t as disappointed with JAnderson as some of you are. He might not be the best overall DE on our roster, but he’s the best Hybrid DE/DT on the roster, and like you said, we’d take a big cap hit if we released him. So knowing all of this, and the fact he won’t be cut, plus JShultz and SSmith have stated he won’t be cut, why foolishly continue making him an issue?

What frustrates me most is the obvious loser mentality that seems so prevalent among a lot of our fans. Instead of focusing on the good, like DE KBierman’s improvement or the breakout performances of DT’s TLewis and PJerry, those with loser mentalities choose to focus on JAnderson’s on field demeanor or perceived attitude and other nonsense that doesn’t seem to be an issue with our coaching staff. IT JUST DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE.

nhe, thats what I have been saying all along about Biermann. I know in certain situations ABE can move to the left but it’s highly unlikely that Biermann will start. He’s been groomed to play the right side and no way they just shift ABE to the left permanently. The coaches want ABE rushing the passer in most situations from the right side. Why? Because that is the blind side for a right handed QB. If ABE played exclusively on the left side the QB would have a better idea of where he is at and you don’t want that to happen with your best pass rusher.

Ken, as usual your way off with your judgments of us bloggers in the cage. And why do you judge us anyway? We have all been excited and blogged restlessly about the play of our young core on defense. If you were here the night of the Baltimore game you would have seen firsthand how excited folks were over the play of Jerry and Biermann. And nobody on this blog has talked Trey lewis up more than I have this preseason. I was telling people in here long before the preseason games even started that Lewis would be a factor. Why you continue to pass through here periodically and pass judgment on everyone is peculiar to say the least.

As far as Houston and JA98 go we have beat this debate to death. There is nothing left to say other than you believe in the two and I don’t believe in them. Thats the end of it. Will see how the two play as the season progresses and whether they step up or get phased out. We shall see.

Ken, Let me get this straight.
We have a franchise that has never in (43 years of existence) had back to back winning seasons.
Then we have young secondary that appears to be lost in finding any cover ability.
Then we have a 30 million dollar #8 overall LDE draft pick, that has registered 2 sacks in 2 years of being a starter, with them wanting pass rush help, like a minor wants gold!
And you biggest frustration is the ”loser mentality” of some of the fan base?
Ken, all due respect man but you have to be kidding, right?
Then you want to reach out with the best hybrid DT/DE on the roster?
What does that mean?
He`s the 4th best DE while being the 5th best DT on the roster?

I personally don`t know what you talking about with any of the ”on field demeanor” or attitude talk.
My criticism has been about his lack of explosiveness out of his stance, inability to wrap up a tackle, his lack of awareness and recognition of the play, with his motor shutting down before the play is over.
Is that the demeanor and attitude you were speaking of?

Cutting RB TBrown was a no brainer. We already have JNorwood and JSnelling as backup RB’s and VHayes’ blocking ability gives us a backup FB, which we need. With EWeems winning the punt return job, there was just no place for TBrown.

At WR, if you don’t have a dynamic reserve WR with starting potential like HDouglas, you go with experience, like a talented old vet like Booker.

At DT, TJohnson showed his experience with some solid moves that VWalker needs to learn. The emphasis and much improved overall play of our young DT’s and DE’s allows us to go with youth at LB, and that might explain SAdkins making the cut.

The Dolphins have a poor secondary and their pass DEF was worse than ours. They had the 10th best rushing OFF, although a lot of their yds came from the gimmicky wildcat formation, the 11th best passing OFF, which isn’t very good at beating you over the top, and the 12 best overall OFF. If this yrs DEF is as good as last yrs at keeping teams our of the endzone, we should defeat them.

My thoughts on the roster surprises:

Spencer Adkins – When the Falcons drafted him, there was some noise that a couple of other teams (the Giants?) were very high on him. Dmitroff and Company must have thought that he would have been claimed off the practice squad if they put him there. He has the talent to be a pro-bowl WLB. Hopefully, he can hold his own on special teams.

William Middleton – I never understood this draft pick in the first place. From what I saw, he was not even projected to be drafted. A waste of a fifth round pick; the worst draft decision of the TD era. I am a little worried that the Bucs picked him up since he should be able to help them gameplan against the D.

Verron Haynes – His versatility as a RB/FB may have been the deciding factor.

Vance Walker – I have a feeling he won’t be on the practice squad long. Apparently, the Panthers have already tried to pick him up. I think he’ll be one of the first DTs picked up if anyone suffers an injury at that position.

Congratulations to Seminole Warrior and Tyler! The Falcons played their cards pretty close to the vest.

BLACK TALON-I’m not concerned in the least about where JAnderson was drafted, how much he’s being paid, how he comes out of his stance, how many sacks he has or how our secondary has performed. Why, because nothing any of us can say or do will change anything associated with JAnderson, and I have absolute confidence that our coaching staff will rectify our secondary problems. So yes, fans that frequent these blogs expressing a losers approach to the team and certain players frustrates me the most.

If you go back and reread all of my posts, you won’t find a single instance where I’ve made negative comments or berated a single Falcons player. I’M NOT A PERSON THAT WASTES TIME LOOKING FOR EXCUSES OR SOMETHING/SOMEONE TO BLAME, I TRY TO LOOK FOR POSSIBLE CAUSES AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS.

In the past, especially under GM RMcKay and HC’s JMora and RPetrino, there were legitimate reasons for some of the attitudes that’s appeared on these blogs. But with our current GM and coaching staff, it’s a complete waste of time. They’ve demonstrated over and over again, and in such a short period of time, they know what they’re doing and what they’ve accomplished isn’t a fluke.

WHY NOT TRUST THEIR JUDGEMENT AND THEIR ABILITY TO RESOLVE OUR SECONDARY ISSUES AND FOCUS ON THE THINGS THAT’S GOING TO GET US OVER THE TOP? We have a dominating OFF that can control the clock and score on anybody, anywhere on the field and at anytime. We have a DEF that’s young, quick, fast, talented and deep, but inexperienced. Last yrs OFF didn’t become dominant and more balanced until after our bye week. Why would anyone with a clue expect our DEF to have all of it’s problems resolved before the end of the exihibition season?

TRUST OUR COACHING STAFF AND OUR PLAYERS TO GET EVERYTHING CORRECTED. ALSO, START TAKING A MORE POSITIVE APPROACH TOWARD OUR COACHING STAFF, PLAYERS AND TEAM OVERALL AND DROP THE LOSER APPROACH. Example: although DE JAnderson’s pass rushing skills have been insufficient to date, his strong play against the run and ability to play multiple positions is invaluable. A DE with his size, height and strength can be very valuable in short yardage, redzone and goalline situations. His ability to play both DT & DE allows us to carry 1 less DT and an extra player at another position. IF OUR PLAYERS AND COACHES THOUGHT LIKE SOME OF THE FANS ON THESE BLOGS, THERE WOULD BE NO REASON FOR US TO EVEN SHOW UP FOR GAMES.

Oh, I got so carried away I forgot to add one last comment. My intention wasn’t to judge or berate anyone for their attitude, but just to bring about an awareness that a loser approach and/or mentality does exist and maybe a change is in order. I apologize if I’ve offended anyone. However, I stand by my approach to the coaches and players and team overall and will continue to support all of the Falcon players until our coaching staff says or does otherwise.

Dean21 – Sorry brother, the vote was certified by Enron Diebold voting machines. Pretty much everyone was really close on their rosters, but it came down to the practice squad picks which were pretty surprising. Thanks for the props, the blog is certainly only a product of the great crew that frequents the Bird Cage.

Joe’s place – Good question. I actually had him making it, and I think if they were to carry 6 WRs than he would’ve been in, but anyone that fills those last backup spots needs to be special teams aces, and Bergeron is more of a pure WR and needs improvement on special teams. Glad he’s on the practice squad.

BlackTalon – Thanks for the props my man. Also a little surprised on TBrown not making the practice squad. I thought that if we did carry a 5th RB, it would certainly be Brown, but I guess his injury history just did him in. I’m with you on the Miami game. I’m a little worried as well. Many on here feel that we will just automatically switch on our DEF, and we may, but 3 poor defensive showings out of 4 is concerning. The defense as a whole played pretty well, but our cornerback play was just downright embarassing. DL and LB did their jobs, but any 3rd and long and it was obvious where it was going. Glad we got Tye Hill and now Brian Williams. We’ll see very soon, because Chad Pennington is no Billy Volek or John Beck.

frank milner – Welcome to the Bird Cage my friend. John Parker Wilson blew the doors off the opportunity he got, even beating out one of my favorite UGA players of all-time in DJ Shockley. But I’ll be the first to tell you that he earned it with his play on the field.

long time falcon – I WILL single out Chris Houston. I am in agreeance with you on our cornerback play. I watched him in person at the Terror-Dome against the Chargers and Ravens and it was pathetic watching every long 3rd down go to #23’s side. Any type of pass, short, intermediate, and long he just looked lost. I’m sorry but the hamstring injury doesn’t fly with me either. He’s a professional player in the National Football League and he makes millions of dollars, gimme a break on an injury as an excuse. If he’s that hurt, than sit on the bench. Abraham, Milloy, and Grimes have all played hurt and never heard a peep about excuses. As fans and season ticket holders we have every right to criticize these guys who play a kid’s game for millions of dollars. Sorry, had to get that off my chest.

WHY NOT TRUST THEIR JUDGEMENT AND THEIR ABILITY TO RESOLVE OUR SECONDARY ISSUES AND FOCUS ON THE THINGS THAT’S GOING TO GET US OVER THE TOP?

Thats exactly what everbody on here has been saying the last few weeks. That we had faith and belief that TD would make moves to shore up the secondary. Ken you’re the one that has been berating everyone on here because we said that something had to be done with this secondary. Now your changing course after TD made two roster moves to bring in secondary help, which is what the majority of the cage has been saying we needed all along! Unbelievable!

Btw, there is nothing that go’s on in here but friendly debate and banter about falcons football. We are all die hard Falcons fans who want to see this team rise to the top. Yet you come in here and say we have losers mentalities and such. This is by far the best sports blog that I have been a part of and one of my favorite places to visit on the net. I just don’t understand you’re motives and reasons for making statements that we have a losers mentatilty if we criticize certain players for playing terrible. We are all passionate fans who want this team to challenge for a super bowl. The very reason this blog exists is so fans can debate about their favorite team. So you think that fans are not going to say anything when a guy gets torched over and over and over on 3rd and long? Or we should just keep quite about the 8th overall pick who only has two sacks in two years when he was brought in primarily to help our pass rush? Thank god you’re not living in Philly or New York!

Ken, if you want to keep some kind of policy for yourself about not criticizing players thats just fine. But friendly banter and debate among passionate fans will stir up discussion about the play of our team. Good and bad.

Seminole – First, congrats on being the victor. You and tyler are both humble champions. Second, let’s hope to goodness your ‘Noles look better than my Dawgs. Some fans are starting to raise the “A” question: has Mark Richt and Georgia become average? Many think he may have lost some of the edge that he brought when he came to UGA. I won’t go that far, but there have been many games as of recent (SC & Tenn of 2007; Ala, Fl, & GT of 2008; and now OKST of 2009). Anyway, also think that the additions of Tye Hill and Brian Williams are rock-solid. If Brian Williams plays lights out, than I say we go ahead and re-up him to a longer deal, because it will be an issue yet again next year if he leaves.

Birdman – The Dolphins game is HUGE one for many reasons. But it will be a knock down drag out fight to the finish that can pay big dividends for our future or be a not-so-great omen for the rest of the year. I’m a little nervous on this one.

jason – Trust me, all good. That was a painful, painful game to watch on Saturday. I know we have talent all over the roster, and it wasn’t all Joe Cox’s fault, but it sure was a decent amount of it. He looked very pedestrian and spare me the “sick” excuse just like the Houston injury excuse. Question is how long will Richt stick with Cox if he continues that type of play? Shouldn’t be long, but I have a bad feeling that Richt let’s his loyalty blind him at times. Can you imagine if we go 0-2? We’ll be lucky to go 4-8 if that happens. Catastrophe may be on the horizon. Hate to be so negative, but good lord that game was bad.

JJ – Can you believe its actually here? A good breakdown will be coming around wednesday, and also another friendly competition.

BlackTalon & LTF – Agreed. Biermann has outplayed all DE’s this year, and maybe the move to another side is that big of deal, but that won’t change his hustle, and high motor that’s lacking with JA#98 and CD#92.

Stirg – Happy Holiday to you as well my D-Town friend. I see that Stafford beat out Culpepper, which I agree with. If its close to a tie, than go with Stafford. I will be the first to admit my assinine opinions on Stafford, but after witnessing that debacle play at QB on saturday, I retract all of my negative statements on Stafford. I’m kind of surprised to hear you be the calming influence on our secondary play, and your correct that we should hold our opinions to after the Dolphins game, but based purely on 3 out of 4 preseason games and TD’s subsequent moves, the coaching staff felt something needed to be done. I will have to disagree with you on Williams coming in as safety help, because our safeties have played adequately enough, especially compared to the cornerback play.

panic fan – I think that the Shockely practice squad move maybe a temporary holding period where we maybe can have him back on the roster after they left Chris Redman and his salary walk into the Free Agent sunset. Nice handle name, by the way.

nhe – Good points. I know that playing Left Tackle and Right Tackle are certainly big deals for offensive lineman, so I assume the same is true for DEnds, but whatever Biermann lacks in technical issues he makes up for hustle and tough play.

CBrass – Thanks so much for the compliments. The blog is really hitting a high pitch as we roll towards the new season. Just wanted to ask a fellow UGA fanatic real quick, are you as worried as I am about our Dawgs? I’m afraid that Richt will stay with Cox due to blind loyalty, similar to what he did with Joe T. If we lose to S.Carolina, this season will be in total free-fall. I say give Logan Gray or Aaron Murray a shot and build for the future. I’m not used to starting the brand new season with a terrible feeling as this. Anyway, let’s hope our Falcons can help us forget about our Dawgs.

Ken Strickland – I understand your frustration, but as a whole, the Bird Cage has been 90% positive in getting ready for the season, but a lot of us are worried that our defense may not be able to hold up their end of the bargain with such an amazing offense. After watching the Chargers game, many of realized our offense can’t win many games by themselves. It’s safe to say that Anderson at least brings good run-stuffing ability, but as an overall dominate DEnd, he ain’t got it. He brings good versatility though. It was also frustrating to see the entire defense (DT, DE, LB, S) play pretty dang well, but the CB’s didn’t hold up their end. We all get a little hyper-excited this time of year, but TD’s strategy was a must, but also very risky to let 5 starters go. We’ll find out soon enough.

tyler – Congrats on winning the competition my man. I think a lot of fans want to see Biermann starting on sunday, but I have a feeling he may not get the nod. We’ll see.

Ravi – Good points all around on the roster players. I’m glad we kept Adkins to develop, because we need to get younger at LB and his skill set is through the roof. Some good coaching can hopefully help him blossom into a solid player. TD definitely missed on the Middleton pick. We’ll give him a pass on missing on one out of eight, but it sure would’ve been nice to pick a good one there.

I wonder if Shock will settle for the minimum pay on the practice squad. I know if I wanted to play QB, my agent would be burning up the wires getting me a new gig now. D3,

If he plays like he did on Saturday then like falcon21 said Cox will not make it through the second quarter. It was so frustrating watching our O after such an impressive first drive. We will see more of Logan this week no matter what. With a duel QB in the backfield a defense will have to play honest(wow I actually sound like I know what I’m talking about…LOL). That first drive OSU’s defense didn’t know what to expect. We had B. Smith in the back field a couple of time then we bought in Logan and Samuel was running like a mad man then after that Bobo went all conservative on us. On that point I’m going to agree with falcon21 again. If the play calling like that happens for a second game in a row Richt will have to make a change. I too have negative comments about Stafford(not a great leader and decision making was horrible) but I really missed his big arm on Saturday. With Cox looked like he could barely throw it 40 yards on Saturday. That’s one thing I’m going to miss where Stafford is concerned. Who has the bigger arm between Cox and Gray?

D3, Cox will not survive the USCEast game. The main reason is the inability to stretch the field. At least Staff could do that. Might hit only 10% but open up running room for the RBs. That game was not near as bad as when I watched SAT. There were alot of young players playing. We got alot of nerves and first game kinks out of the way against a good and solid team as we move forward and get into SEC play. The defense looked good, but always room for improvement. As to the QB, saying Cox gets benched, who do you go with? Logan? What have we seen from him to think he can do the job? What about Murray? He is coming in with Staff type hype? UGA fans are getting restless. We yearn for something more than a 10 win season. Will CMR do what needs to be done? I am not saying take the OC duties away from Bobo, but he needs to have way more input, especially in critical moments of a game. Well that’s all I have for now. I will now return to Atlanta Falcon football.

One last thing, I bet Smith now knows when to kneel a touchback and when to run one out. He killed us with pour decision making on STs. Frosh mistakes. They happen to NFL rookies all the time. The NFL just don’t start that many rookies at one time. Not even an expansion team.

Congrats Seminole and Tyler on your roster picks, chances are D3 hid a couple of extra points in the teepee for my ACC brother, to soften the blow of that hurricane that is blowing in tonight. Well thats not fair to D3 since we are still trying to figure out who let the dogs out and WHY?

Yes my fellow cagers its good to be back once again amongst friends and family. The season is now upon us and we fans of the beloved sport of football were blessed with some nice action this weekend with the beginning of the college football season. I look forward to a great season both professionally and non-professionally, on the gridiron and on the computer screen, we should all be in for a great season.

On a sour note, I wasn’t able to catch the birds last preseason game, but from the looks of most of your post, general sherman has returned to Atlanta and this time he seems to be focusing on the Falcons secondary. I’m about to watch the game now, and I am fearful of what I’m going to see, but hopefully there is some unwritten plan that we haven’t discovered for the supposed success of this supposedly younger and faster defense. I’m a bit worried that the coaches and front office of our birds seem to think they are keeping from us, what we have already discovered and that is that the secondary absolutely is horrible, especially when you consider that the birds just signed yet another CB today, yeah kind of makes you feel confident about the secondary, wait, not really.

Well I’m out for now cagers’ I have to go and cheer on the hurricanes, nothing against my brother seminole, but I would like for the Jackets to face an overconfident Miami coming off a beat down of an in state rival, rather than face a Hurricane that is still fuming from a beat down by an in-state rival.

Lets put this defensive argument to rest, already. We are about to establish the best safety tandem in the NFC. Out of the three (DeCoud, Coleman and/or Moore), two of them are bound to establish cohesion. Our linebackers play like veterans and Mike Peterson is already slated to be “Comeback Player” of the year. The defensive line is about to be the talk of the town/time. You may cannot see it but I see a chemical reaction that is about to explode. Can you imagine a line (two years from now) with Biermann, Jerry, Babineaux, Lewis, Johnson and Sidbury? This debate about Jamaal Anderson is becoming redundant. I know that I have bashed our defensive ends before but that’s just my nature. That doesn’t mean I want to get rid of the players. I’ll talk about Abraham all day but I don’t want to see him leave (wouldn’t mind a strong trade, though). Same thing with Anderson. I’m one of those that will bash him all day but I’m also smart enough to realize that he has not served his full tour of duty for me to throw him into the “bust” category. I’ll bet you one thing, though… If we waive Anderson on Tuesday, he’d be signed by another team Wednesday morning, ‘fore day. His value to the team is worth much more than what we can see on Sunday.

D3, don’t be surprised of my calmness with our secondary play. As much as we hate to hear it, Chris Houston is our starter…and he aint that bad. Sure, he gets burned and his side of the field will give up some precious yards. This is his third year in the league, though. WTF? If the Falcons had a losing season last year, and this year, should we give up on Mike Smith?

Here’s a tidbit for you. In Mike Smith’s final two seasons in J’ville, the starting cornerbacks were Rashean Mathis and Brian Williams. Mathis is 6′1″, 200lbs and was selected to a pro-bowl. Brian Williams is 5′11, 200lbs. Now, Chris Houston is no Mathis and he may not even be a Williams; but he did put up similar numbers in his second season as identical to Mathis’ numbers. The Jaguars were willing to be patient with Mathis and he entered the pro bowl his fourth season. I’m not saying that Houston is headed to the pro bowl anytime soon but I’m not willing to give up on the idea, just yet.

Brian Williams having been in Smitty’s scheme in Jax, may mean him playing a limited role in the first game, if it looks like the game is getting out of hand.

jason – Normally, I would agree with you on Richt pulling Cox, but he’s one of the more blindly loyal and stubborn coaches in the SEC. I could be wrong on this one, but it seems that many programs are simply passing us by. Florida, that ones easy. LSU, check. For all his BS, Kiffin looks to have breathed new life into Tennessee. Paul Johnson has brought a nasty, killer instinct to GT. There are many in the media and fans alike that feel that Richt and our program has lost that “edge” that we had when he first got here. Since 2005, our program has seemed to idle by. With all the talent we have at UGA, there is simply no excuse for us not playing better than we did. Defense played OK, but offense was pretty anemic to say the least, and pathetic to say the most. I’m a little worried about our program right now, call me a fatalist, but that’s my nature. When’s the last time we just came out and really took it to a team? (Hawaii doesn’t count). Complacency seems to have set in. He’s been there for almost a decade and very few changes have been made. Watching the two QBs for Miami and FSU right now pisses me off thinking about that embarassing display on saturday.

WR – Welcome back my friend. Any more vacations on the horizon? j/k. Overall, our defense looked pretty good, especially our DL, but all our CB’s (Houston, Owens, & Jackson) looked bad against the all-powerful John Beck, 3rd string RB, and 3rd string WRs (many of them who were cut). DL, LBs, & Safeties did there job on 1st and 2nd down, but our CBs fell apart on 3rd. I may be one of many pulling a chicken little/sky falling because they may have gone vanilla on DEF, but they looked BAD in 3 out of 4 preseason games, and TD made not onem, but two moves for more CBs. I’ll gladly eat all my words with crow if I jumped the gun and we play good against the ‘Fins.

Stirg – Good points and I need to be reminded that the official season hasn’t kicked off yet. The jury has been out on Chris Houston from day 1 though, and he had a better year, but he’s always had the stigma of giving up the big play and not being physical enough. Not only trading for Tye Hill, but also picking up a solid veteran CB in Williams, is certainly anything but a vote of confidence for Houston. I’ll buy the argument of coaches wanting to see players in certain situations until we tee it up against the ‘Fins on Sunday.

boxcarar – I wouldn’t be shocked to see Williams get in some on Sunday.

I had read that story.
On another line, when\if you played in So. Ga, did you ever play against Turner County? My family has farmland down there.

D3,
You state other programs passing UGA by, what do Gators have after Tebow leaves? This all is about the SEC being the Juggernaught(sp) that we are. A single team cannot have the top program every year, but it is nice to know we will always have at least 6 teams in the top 25. I want the Dawgs to be number 1 every year, but we have to live in the real world. I believe that Bobo is our main problem. I apologize to the Cage for my forum statement. Sic’ em.

boxcarar – I agree with you on not expecting to be tops every year, but it just seems like we may have lost something that we used to have several years ago. You can count on at least 2 or 3 games a year on us showing up looking totally unprepared. 2006 (All SEC East teams except SC), 2007 (SC & Tenn), 2008 (Ala, Fl, GT), 2009(OKSU, …..?). I’m certainly a big chicken little, but this feeling has been building for some time now. Seems as though some stagnation has set in Athens.

I was upset that Aaron Kelly didn’t get a practice squad spot. Is there anyone that can find out what he ends up doing?

D3,
That is SOP for Georgia teams for years. You never know which team is going to show up on a given Saturday. That was a trait from back in the Dooley years. Many games lost that should have been won. This has happened way before the Richt era. It is a curse. Apologize again to the Cage, but if no one else is talking…I’m bored.
Raider Fan,
I bet Kelly is picked up pretty soon. I wish we could have kept him.

D3-Great Blog as usual; congrats to SW & tyler. My 89-yera-old mother was hospitalized with chest pains last Wednesday and I spent the last 6 days with her; so I didn’t get a chance to submit my roster. Mine would have lost, anyway since i was surprised by many of the cuts.
RAVI: if Spencer Adkins had the telent to be an all-pro WLB, don’t you think he would at least be starting for the Falcons? Never thought he would beat out Winborn, though.
The WR spot was too close for anyone to call. Booker, Bergeron & Ferguson all looked good at times. Also surprised that Kelly did not make the PS.
The Middleton cut was surprising; given that TD gave up completely on his own draft choice. Midd. must have really performed poorly on ST & practice or fallen asleep in meetings.
Someone suggested that the Birds kept DJ to throw to the PC WRs. Uh, you mean Troy Bergeron? They kept a QB on PC to throw to one receiver? I believe the Birds ended up with 6 WRs & 3 QBs on the 53-man roster, which means that each QB will have 2-3 WRs to work with on a regular basis. Nor do I think DJ was kept as a #7 stand-in. I told all about DJ a month ago: if he did not clearly beat out JPW he would be cut. The fact that Mike & Mike gave JPW more playing time in the games means to me that he earned it in practice. If DJ wasn’t impressing the coaching staff in practice, why put him in the games? Pro coaches don’t hold to the “game day player” theory that some players are awful in practice but show up in games. If a player doesn’t perform in practice, he doesn’t get a chance to get in the game.
Also was surprised by the TBrown cut. Haynes is a slower Snellings. Why keep them both? Again, could be something the coaches saw that I didn’t. Certainly TBrown did not make the most of his opportunities.
All of this is to explain why my roster would have been a loser; not to question TD & MS’s decisions in any way. I trust them to make the right calls and put together the best possible team. It’s their jobs at stake, anyway; this is just a hobby for the rest of us.
GO BIRDS!!! BEAT THE FINS!! BADLY!!

D3, although I was kidding about that recount for myself…that diebold machine might need some service..lol

However for the sake of announcing a SOLE winner..I think Seminole Warrior maybe the winner alone. Not to count out Tyler’s effort and winnings…but listed below is the Falcon’s actual Practice squad and below that are Tyler’s practice squad listing and it doesn’t add up to (2)because Middleton was cut not placed on the Psquad…

Actual P-Squad -DJ Shockley, Michael Butterworth, Troy Bergeron, Jose Valdez, Robert James, Vance Walker, Maurice Lucas, and Glenn Sharpe

Tyler’s P-squad list – PS: Kelly, C. Williams, Valdez, JPW, Brown, Middleton, Adkins, Tiller

sorry it’s the former law enforcement in me~ hey, it’s all in fun..so we are all winners at heart huh…

Greetings Cagers!!! Good to see there has been a good debate going on.

One thing is for sure, TD & Smitty obviously felt we needed more experience in the secondary. Brian Williams will be a pretty good addition and we may have found our “Foxworth-like Falcon”. As I have said before in another blog, I am cautiously optimistic and I think our defense will continue to improve.

As many have stated before, I am very pleased with the improvement of Biermann. With his improvement and the addition of more youth and speed on the DL we will be better this year when all is said and done. I always want to see the glass half full and I think JA98 may still surprise many of us. Of course that would be a good thing for us Falcon fans.

Any word on what caused Matty Ice to leave practice today? What was wrong with him? I hope it’s nothing too significant.

Just saw Chad Pennington on NFL Network. He said his challenges vs. the Falcons are:
1) explosive offense; 2) fast on defense; 3) crowd noise;………………….but we knew that already right?

Go Falcons!!!

Nuff respect everytime!!!

Nookah,
It’s been reported that Matty Ice has the Flu!!! Imagine this, first Joe Cox and now Matt Ryan! Ironic of the timing before their first games of the season…let’s hope it’s a mild case, but a mild case can be draining. I wish him a speedy recovery!
