Beware the Turk
The best time of the year for us football junkies: 3 days away from Thursday Night College Football on ESPN, 5 days away from College Kickoff Weekend, and 13 days away from Birds-‘Fins in the Terror-Dome. The eminent start of the NFL season brings a very nerve-racking time for many players fighting for their professional lives across the league. Players known as bubble candidates will be putting their absolute best foot forward in the remaining week and final preseason game to ensure they get one of those crucial final spots on the 53 man protected roster. Players will be looking over their shoulder as the final cut down day of Saturday, September 5th approaches. This is the day the teams must trim their roster to get to 53 players. These players that are on the bubble will be looking out for the “Turk” as he’s referred to around the league. The slogan “Beware the Turk” has developed as the final cutdown approaches. Active, Inactive, and Protected Rosters
The rules can be quite convoluted and complex when it comes to a NFL team’s roster throughout the season. A very quick breakdown of the surrounding rules. Every NFL team can have no more than 53 players on their roster at any one time throughout the season. Changes can be made as often as possible, at least to common knowledge. Teams have to submit an active roster for each game which can only include 45 players allowed to actually play in the game. The remaining eight players that are declared inactive cannot play in that game, but are protected by that team and cannot be picked up by other NFL teams. Teams may decide to rotate between active and inactive players based on strategy or opponents they are facing that week. In other words, NFL teams have a 53 man protected roster in which they can shuffle around as they choose.
Practice Squads
In addition to the 53 man protected roster, NFL teams can designate players to a practice squad which contains 8 players that can be used for scout team purposes or a sort of “insurance” policy in case anyone on their protected roster gets injured or implodes on the field. However, players on practice squads are unprotected and can be claimed by any other NFL team at any time. When teams want to claim other squad’s players off practice squads, they must be signed onto that new teams protected roster. Under the current collective bargaining agreement, there are several rules associated with practice squads. If a player is claimed off a practice squad, it must be done so at least 6 days before the team’s next game. Players cannot have played more than nine regular season games or been on the active roster for an entire year, nor can players be allowed to spend more than two seasons on the same team’s squad unless that team’s active roster never dips below 53 players. And on the note of discussing final rosters, its time for the 1st Annual Bird Cage Friendly Roster Spot Competition. Use your best prognostication skills, training camp updates, players performances, and overall Falcons knowledge to be crowned Bird Cage Roster Spot Champ. Similar to the Bird Cage Mock Draft Competition back in April, the Roster Spot Competition involves a very simple formula: each correct choice nets 1 point and each correct practice squad selection will net a half point. Submit your final choices for the Atlanta Falcons 2009 Final Roster and all will be saved to the hard drive and analyzed on Sunday after the final bell tolls. Make some tough decisions and imagine if its difficult for you than how hard it will be for the coaches. Deadline for final submittal is Thursday at 11:59 pm. Cemented his job as Falcons premier backup in great performance against Rams. Worth the high price tag of $4.5 million a year, giving Falcons fans relief knowing that Redman can play in case of emergency.
3) John Parker Wilson
Showed a great ability that he can be groomed as a future project, coming in and looking extremely comfortable running the third team offense. Not dazzling numbers, but no mistakes as an undrafted rookie free agent, and excellent efficiency at driving the Falcons down the field. *(See sad decision on Hometown Hero DJ Shockley below).

4) Michael Turner
Pro-Bowl lock starting RB
5) Jerious Norwood
Lightning to Turner’s Thunder. May be last year in red and black
6) Jason Snelling
Had an excellent preseason showing speed, power, and a great ability as a third down and goal line back. May move into #2 RB spot if Norwood leaves in free agency
7) Ovie Mughelli
One of the best blocking fullbacks in the NFL

Franchise wide receiver locked up as a Falcon virtually for his career

Starting wide receiver who is coming into his own opposite Roddy
10) Brian Finneran
Looks to be current starting slot receiver and reminded everyone of his ability with his nice touchdown catch and run against the Chargers. Sure handed, red zone threat, and special teams ace
11) Eric Weems
Great story of hard work and perseverance. Got his opportunity and made the most of it. Not the flashiest name, but has had one of the best preseasons of any Falcon. Likely already safe, but the beautiful game-winning touchdown catch was icing on the roster spot cake. Looks to be in the Falcons future plans even beyond this year
12) Marty Booker
Showed flashes of his old self throughout preseason making some nice catch and runs in several games. Seemed to have more upside as a receiver than Ferguson, even though maybe not in terms of special teams. Age of 33 is a perfect one year fill-in for Harry Douglas coming back from injury next year.
13) Troy Bergeron
First big surprise pick. After trying for years and years to make an NFL roster, Bergeron finally earns a spot with the Falcons, finishing a feel good story of hard work and determination. Excellent slot receiver who runs good routes and has excellent hands. At 6′2, 195 maybe a future replacement for Brian Finneran when he hangs up his cleats.
Offensive Line (9 Total – 5 Tackles, 2 Guards, 2 Centers)
14) Sam Baker
Anchor left tackle for the future
15) Justin Blaylock
Road-grading left guard who is young and continues his growth
16) Todd McClure
Grizzled veteran center who still has game at the young age of 32. O-Line captain.
17) Harvey Dahl
One of the toughest and violent guards in the league. Forms the great “Nasty Boys” tandem with Tyson Clabo on the right side. Locking him up to long-term deal is a high priority
18) Tyson Clabo
Big, strong right tackle who has been developed and groomed by the Falcons. Great young tackle that completes the “Nasty Boys” tandem with Dahl. Along with Dahl, locking up Tyson Clabo is the highest season priority
19) Brett Romberg
Signed in the offseason and showed why he looks to be McClure’s replacement when he hangs up his cleats. Offense didn’t miss a beat when he was in the game against the Rams. Another great free agent pickup by TD. Can play guard in a pinch.
20) Will Svitek
Another OL pickup via free agency by TD. Looks to be an excellent option and insurance for Baker’s injury history. Extremely young at 27 and appears to be in the Falcons long term future
21) Garrett Reynolds
The only offensive draft pick of 2009 hasn’t disappointed in his rookie debut. Showed reasons why he may start one day in the near future in the NFL. Fits the big, nasty style of play Coach Smith and Coach Boudreau desires.
22) Quinn Ojinnaka
Versatility is the key. Taking only 9 OL requires at least one or two lineman to be able to play several positions and Ojinnaka’s versatility on being able to play guard and tackle look to give him the edge in the last spot. Possibly moving to guard permanently with Reynolds and Svitek.
Tight Ends (3)
23) Tony Gonzalez
Future Hall of Fame Tight End at the top of his game, enough said.
24) Justin Peele
Superb complement to Gonzalez and looks to be featured a lot with many two tight end sets. Likely will see many targets with TG getting doubled up.
25) Keith Zinger
Next big shocker. Zinger was drafted in the seventh round last year by TD and failed to make the active roster, but was placed on the practice squad for an entire year. Always known as a blocker, but showed his ability to catch on several occasions in preseason games. A younger Ben Hartsock. A need to get younger and develop at tight end with Gonzalez and Peele both being over 30.
Defensive Tackles (5)
26) Jonathan Babineaux
Starting defensive tackle that looks to benefit from more athleticism from the other DT spot.
27) Peria Jerry
1st round draft pick that has been slow adjusting to the pro game, but hopefully will make necessary corrections and live up to his first round status.
28) Trey Lewis
Another great feel good story. Lewis looks to be the lead candidate for the starting DTackle spot opposite Babineaux. Appears to be healthy after two knee injuries. Big, athletic run stuffer.
29) Thomas Johnson
Had one of the best camps of any defensive tackle. Drew raves in the offseason and translated into the preseason games. High motor, tough defender that looks to be in the DT rotation.
30) Vance Walker
Uncommon to keep 5 defensive tackles, but Walker is too good to pass up as a building block for the future. Has had an excellent camp and preseason, and great insurance to Trey Lewis and Peria Jerry’s injury history. Not a candidate for practice squad, because he will be snatched up faster than any player. If only one spot, he gets the nod over Thomas Johnson.
Defensive Ends (5)
31) John Abraham
Pro-Bowl caliber defensive end and leader of the defense.
32) Kroy Biermann
Looks be starting sooner rather than later. Has one of the highest motors and hustle playing style of any Falcon. Should be in competition to start. Has had one of the best camps of any DE on the roster.
33) Chauncey Davis
Signed to a 4 year resign in the offseason. Played fairly vanilla throughout the preseason. Has had an enormous opportunity to steal the starting job, and still might, but needs to get back to his old self.
34) Lawrence Sidbury Jr.
Proved why he was considered a steal in the fourth round, collaring two sacks in one game against the Rams. Will see much playing this year, and may even snatch a starting spot before its all over. Abe’s future replacement.
35) Jamaal Anderson
Trials and tribulations have been well-documented. Just doesn’t possess the killer instinct of all-star DEnds. May be used as a DT in future, thus cutting one of the above DTs. Won’t be cut outright due to enormous cap hit, but don’t totally rule out a potential trade to a 3-4 run defense team.
Linebackers (5)
36) Curtis Lofton
Biggest building block for defense. One of the best, young LBs in the league
37) Mike Peterson
Offseason acquisition that will taking Keith Brooking’s old spot. Seems to have enough gas left in the tank.
38) Stephen Nicholas
Starting strong-side LB that has shown flashes, but needs consistency and a breakout game.
39) Coy Wire
Special teams captain that took over Michael Boley’s position as a starter last year. Versatile LB that is great run stuffer and even better special teams player
40) Tony Gilbert
Had one of the best camps of any LB and cemented his spot by playing lights out in pretty much every game he’s been in. Interception return for a TD didn’t hurt.
Cornerbacks (6)
41) Chris Houston
Had the worst performance imaginable, but a little confidence boost can get him back up to par.
42) Brent Grimes
Determination and pure grit has led him to steal the starting CB spot…..again.
43) Chris Owens
Has had an excellent camp as a true rookie and may be starting sooner rather than later.
44) Chevis Jackson
Even though not likely in running for starting CB job, looks to have the nickel job sewn up.
45) William Middleton
Hasn’t stood out as a true rookie in camp, but appears to get a lot of work on special teams, may see action in quarter or dime situations, and great development project
46) Open CB spot
Per Dimitroff’s remarks after the Chargers D-secondary meltdown, this looks to be filled via free agency, other team cuts, or trade. Maybe Chris McAllister
Safeties (4)
47) Erik Coleman
Starting strong safety and leader of the secondary.
48) Thomas DeCoud
Starting free safety that looks to maximize his potential in his new position.
49) William Moore
Although seemingly injury-prone, its just a matter of time before this playmaker starts seeing the field. Possibly could lay LB in a pinch.
50) Eric Brock
The hardest selection of all. Basically can flip a coin between Brock, Jamaal Fudge, and Antoine Harris. Fudge has the run support, Harris is a special teams stud, but Brock has the most upside, is the youngest, and had a bit better camp on defense than the other two. Out of practice squad eligibility
Special Teams (3)
51) Jason Elam
Starting kicker and potential Hall of Famer.
52) Michael Koenen
So good a punter and kickoff specialist that the Falcons burned a franchise tag on him.
53) Mike Schneck
Long snapper that’s certainly an essential part of every team.
Practice Squad (8)
Aaron Kelly – WR; Great long-term project, potential replacement for Finneran
Thomas Brown – RB; Couldn’t kick the injury bug, may get picked up quick
Jose Valdez – G; Best of young guards that may even take Ojinnaka’s spot
Michael Butterworth – T; Had a good preseason, but too crowded at tackle. Could move to G.
Antoine Harris – S; May not be eligible for practice squad
Spencer Adkins – LB; Very raw, but high ceiling skill set

Tough, Hard Losses
DJ Shockley
As much as it pains to say, DJ’s time has run out in red and black. Perhaps suffering from the “Francouer Syndrome” in being a hometown hero that will forever be loved as a North Clayton High Standout and University of Georgia Champion, but looks like its time for DJ to get a shot with a different team. Could never find consistency that he needed. Was SEC Champion and MVP, more than you can say for #1 Overall Pick Stafford or John Parker Wilson.
Robert Ferguson
Had a great preseason in terms of special teams, but didn’t produce enough on the field at WR. Troy Bergeron gets the nod being younger, quicker, and more productive. Booker is a perfect stop-gap for Harry Douglas’ return.
Ben Hartsock
This may be a non-issue as he could easily make the team, but the trade for Gonzalez presses a need to get younger at TE. Zinger is a drafted product who is a younger version of Hartsock.
Von Hutchins
Very unfortunate with the Lisfranc injury and never really getting a chance to show his stuff, but the secondary is in too much dire straits to count on an injury-prone DB. Versatility at CB and S may put him on the roster.
Ben Wilkerson
After several years in a Falcons uniform, the additions of Romberg and Reynolds forces him out.
Robert James
Concussion hampered him before he could ever get started. Couldn’t show enough in preseason to warrant a spot. If the Falcons elect to carry a 6th LB, he’s in.
Thomas Brown
Practice roster candidate. Just could never kick the injury bug and find consistency. Kept waiting for the big breakout, but was never had. Likely snatched up quick by another team.
Chandler Williams
The superb play of Eric Weems and good play of Bergeron eliminated spots before Williams could claim one.

Ohhh, so this is how you get to be first…(stay up all night).
D3, I can go along with your roster except for a couple of spots. Eric Brock is a goner. I hear that Von Hutchins is being cross-trained for the safety/cornerback position. That will pretty much lock him for that last corner and safety spot (killing two birds with one stone).
Secondly, I have not made my 53-man determination yet but I’m almost certain Marty Booker will not make my roster. Robert Ferguson is younger and more versatile. I may even manage a way to include Aaron Kelly onto the roster. We’ll see. Good post.

D3: Great post, as usual! Will wait until later in the week to submit my roster, but I agree with yours basically, except for a couple of comments: MPeterson will make the roster, he has looked good against the run; but he has been slow in coverage and did not look good on those screen passes last week.
Bergeron is 30 pounds lighter than Finn; he will make the poster and is a good option in the slot. But to eventually replace Finn we need a bigger WR like Ferg or Kelly.
Stirg: you always have great, knowledgeable comments; but what more does Booker need to do to make your roster? I hate to see Ferguson go; all of the WRs looked good last week (except Chandler Williams, who almost cost a completion by lifting his knees at the sideline on his only catch). Wish there was a way to leep both Ferg. & Booker.
I think that the waiver wire will change the defensive roster significantly over the next couple of weeks. Someone mentioned on a previous post that we should spend a lot of high draft choices on defense next year. Well, that’s exactly what we did this year. TD will protect his draft choices and I think that Owens, Middleton, Moore and Jerry all have bright futures. We need veteran help off waivers to get us through this year. Why is McCallister still available? I’m not being critical of TD or suggesting that we sign him; just don’t know what CM’s situation is with every team needing CBs.

When is Norwood going to REALLY do something? We keep hearing about his speed and potential, and he has busted a few big plays, but he is a veteran RB now and should be producing more. He is too tentative and tip-toes instead of just bursting ahead. (like I could tell someone how to be a pro RB!). Compare him to Sproles for SD and other who, when given an opportunity, actually produce. I hate to see someone like Snelling or Brown, who are so good on ST, cut to keep Norwood; who seems to lack true RB vision and instincts.

Also, next year’s draft will concentrate on LBs and OLs unless Jerry and the rookie DBs fail completely this year. We drafted a DT, a DE, a LB and 3 DBs this year; then signed 2 vet LBs (MP & JM) this year. We will probably pick up more off waivers. TD trusted his own instincts to replace the 5 starters he let leave from last year’s D. I personally think that letting Brooking leave may have been a mistake; but I agree with the other moves (the Ravens paid way too much for Foxworth). Re: Foxworth: he may turn into an All-Pro, but for the Raven to give him that guaranteed contract after less than a full season of starting experience surprised everyone, experts included.
Anyway, will TD’s instincts be any better next year as far as fixing the defense is concerned? Will the DBs get a lot better with coaching and experience? I believe that the main misjudgement was that the Dbackfield could be built around CHouston and Vhutchins return, which may prove wrong. MS & BVG were rotating safety help to the other side last week. They may not be able to do that during the regular season. Also, Moore’s injury history has come back to haunt him; that’s why he lasted until the second round.
That said, I hope that they get it all straightened out and everyone on the roster performs well and stays healthy. GO BIRDS!!

Good topic D3. I will drop mine later after I get some sleep. I am looking at our roster, and can’t help looking toward this coming offseason. Houston and JAnderson both will be gone unless there is drastic improvement this year. And I mean DRASTIC. They will have to turn into complete new players. They have BUST written all over them. Maybe they both should have spent that extra year in school. It happens to frequently that kids will chase millions on talent alone, and no skill or knowledge to aid them.
I have to say right now if I was choosing between Booker and Ferguson… I am taking Booker. He showed his value in the second half working with Redman.
ED, I thought that catch was spetacular by CWilliams. That was a bad ball thrown by Redman.
I am getting worried about the DBs. I say if we are going to get buned week in and week out, let’s do it with the kids, Owens, Jackson, and Middleton. I know “Mighty Mouse” Grimes is a fan favorite. He goes all out to make the plays, but in reality, he does not have the physical stats to be a starting CB in the NFL. He is too damn small. Owens and Jackson will be the 2 physical CBs that we are all calling for.
I also agree that Bierrman needs to be starting somewhere. He showed the best overall motor and the desire to make plays. I am not satisfied with either JAnderson or CDavis as starting DE. Davis will work best as a reserve, as he has been for his career up to this point. Sid or Bierrman will be starting oppisite Abe before this season is over. Jerry will not start a game at DT this year, but he will get more than his fair share of snaps in a rotation amongst Babs, TLewis, Walker, and Johnson.

Stirg & iDash – Got your rosters saved. They look like a winner.
Birdman – Can’t let Snelling go, in my opinion. I was a doubter of his too, but he finally won me over with his tough running and quickness this preseason. We definitely help on DEF.
Ed-Covington – Yeah, you’re right about Bergeron replacing BFinn. I was hoping that Kelly would steal a spot the way Parker Wilson did, but he has not separated himself at all. Norwood has certainly not done himself any favors this preseason if he wants to exploit the big FA market and prove he’s an every down back.
jason – I agree on your point of JA#98, but as far as Houston being the B–T word, I will have to depart somewhat. He had a pretty good year last year and seemed to be ready for the next step, but that was a terrible performance saturday night. Maybe he can get a confidence boost and get right back out there. Biermann should get a chance to start, period.
Blindog – I think a lot of people are really pulling for Bergeron to make the squad. He’s had a very good preseason and can be a part of our future plans. If we keep 6 WR’s it will be hard to imagine us keeping Booker AND Ferguson over Bergeron.
SWAT Native – Normally I would agree with you, especially since DJ’s one of my favorite all-time Bulldogs, but on the field, JPW proved he could lead the team down the field pretty much at will in his rookie appearance. For whatever reason, DJ just can’t find consistency. JMHO.

On an up note, I was really impressed by All of the WRs last week. Don’t remember a drop and they caught everything thrown their way. I recall our fears from 3 weeks ago when HD went down; and though no one can replace his versatility, I feel a lot better about our WRs than I did then. Especially since I thought then was that our hope lay in Kelly breaking out, which he never really did.
Now if TD can find a few defenders the caliber of Booker & Ferguson; or if some of the young guys step up like Bergeron & Weems; we may be OK.
JASON: IMHO Redman threw outside & low away from the defense; but Williams raised his knees just before going OB possibly costing a completion. JMHO.

The tough decisions:
1. Troy Bergeron – I’d love to keep him over Ferguson, because he fills a big need in the slot, but Ferguson will get the roster spot because of his special teams ability. Marty Booker is just too sure handed and professional to let go. If Booker wasn’t here, Bergeron makes it.
2. Jamaal Anderson – his experience at end and tackle keeps him on the roster – it will enable them to go with 9 DL and put Walker on the practice squad. I think we all agree that JA98 is number 9 on the DL depth chart.
3. Thomas Brown – the Falcons will take 5 not 4 RB/FBs, and its between Brown and Veron Haynes for the last spot – I prefer Haynes, but the Falcons are likely to go with youth and depth at PR/KR. Personally, I’d take Haynes over Ovie at FB, but that’s just me.
4. DJ Shockley – the Falcons have a history of keeping a practice squad QB, and will continue that trend……….I’m not as enamored with Eric Brock as some. So I think Wilson gets that practice squad spot and Shockley stays at number 3 one more year – UNLESS – he asks for and is granted the opportunity to explore number 2 possibilities with another team.
Surprises – The Falcons had 8 draft picks – I think two are released – Atkins and Middleton. This frees up plenty of room for waiver wire acquisitions. Its ok to admit you miss on a few 2nd day picks.

Not even gonna try the roster thing… esp not the practice squad part. I do think Von Hutchins will make the team, not that I necessarily agree/disagree. I just hope that TD is working hard on finding us some Defensive help… hate to say I called it from that Chargers game but dam n… then again I’m sure I was only one of many who knew the D was in trouble before the game

Thanks D3 I agree with you about Snelling .But I’m thinking tradeing power .I think maybe not him tho becouse he can give Turner the help he needs to get releaf also he is better than Norwood on carries.Norwood hmmm ? Good tradeing power there for someone good on the D .But whats out there ? D3, you said it earlier about a CB and his confidence. It is apparrent that Houston does not have any left. All the talent in the world ain’t gonna help you when you are so far away from the play. I mean it wasn’t as if it was one pass in that game. It was like every time a pass went his way. He keeps watching the QB’s eyes and losing sight of the WR and where the WR is running. It is the same mistakes over and over again. No sweat on me if he goes. He was a Prictrino pick anyway, same as JAnderson.

I hope TD can find one starting caliber CB and I wish he could sign two starting caliber CB’s. We do not have a starting caliber CB on our roster. Chris Owens looks like he could develop into a solid starting CB and I like what I have seen so far from Chevis Jackson, but neither of these players are ready to start just yet.
Let’s all look on the bright side, we should have some high scoring exciting games to watch this year!!

I’m not a saint, myself, falcon21; so, I’m not about to judge his actions off the field. What I am aware of, however, is that he still has some mileage left on his engine. He’s from Atlanta (BoatRock, to be exact) and he’d make a wonderful compliment to an eventual Owens and/or Jackson. Lastly, for those that seem to think that AB is trying to distant himself from “thug-labeled” players, this will certainly dispel the notions. Then again, he does not have to prove s*#t to anyone…

Yeah. My question was sarcasm for all those that believe that Grimes does not deserve a chance as starter because he’s short. Spud Webb was short; Jessie Tuggle was short; Doug Flutie was short; B. Grimes deserves a chance to start. And you know what? He played a whole lot better than Houston did. I say we start Grimes and Owens, Thursday against B’more. If the tandem can hold the numbers against the Ravens passing attack, we have our starters. If not, grab what we can off the waiver and rotate what we have left.

All V, all the time – Is this Philadelphia? I feel like I’m reading the Philadelphia Inquirer because every day there is some story on MV. I wish him the best, but for Chrissake, at what point do we stop covering former players. Haven’t seen a daily story on Michael Boley, Grady Jackson, Keith Brooking, or Lawyer Milloy. Why not a Daily Deion Sanders section? How ’bout a Matt Schaub corner. AJC c’mon.
Ed-Covington – You’re right about the receivers. They have been a pleasant suprise, especially after HD’s season ending injury. If they carry 6 WR’s, the last two spots will be between Booker, Ferguson, and Bergeron. Even if Bergeron is not quite as good as Ferguson on Spec Teams, I think he has more upside, is younger, and could be a part of the Falcons future plans.
nhe – Nice points all around. The only reason I don’t think Vance Walker and John Parker Wilson go to practice squad is because if they do they will be snatched up immediately, particularly Walker. Hell, I’d rather move JA#98 out of town than Walker who is full of promise. I think Robert James gets released and Spencer Adkins heads to the practice roster, IMO.
markymark – Thanks for the props. I think that the post may have been a little too long for some, so thanks for finishing it. I got going last night and couldn’t stop, kind of like an addict. Yeah, I finally came to the Shockley conclusion when JPW took the offense right down the field with no problem, while DJ struggled mightily the whole game. I hate it because I have a Falcons #3 jersey that looks to be on its way to being a relic.
Trainwreck – C’mon brother, you know you can dominate it. If the coaches believe that Hutchins is completely over his Lisfranc injury than I agree with you, and I almost put him in as the backup safety/cb, but he just can’t seem to heal from that difficult issue.
BigMike – I agree that a change of scenery might do Shockley good because he does have the skills, but he always seems to be forcing to try and make plays, and its a product of having to fight for his professional life in all 3 of his years, under Mora, Prictrino, and Smith. Did BFinn flip you off on the road or something? He’s a solid lock IMO, especially after that nice TD catch and run. On JA#98, its hard pressed to find supporters of his anymore. I think a trade would be the best to hope for, because releasing him would be like a 6 million cap hit, which also reminds me, Who in the Hell wrote and accepted that contract?
Birdman – Agreed on trading power, but I think Snelling might be our future #2 RB with Norwood likely looking to hit the FA market next year. Although he hasn’t done himself any favors in preseason to prove he can be an every down back.
GT Grad – I’ve always wondered why Chevis Jackson couldn’t snag the starting CB that is open. I guess he lacks the top-end speed to take hold of it.
Stirg – In a short answer……NO! We’re not that desperate. If the Cowboys cut him, I think he’s done in the NFL. He wasn’t even that good on the field.
DW & Ravi – Got both of your predictions. Nice picks. I’m certainly taking a risk on my prediction by including Bergeron. I think Booker is in for a year, and the final spot is between Bergeron and Ferguson. Bergeron’s upside as a WR or Ferguson’s spec teams play. Personally, I think that Bergeron can be adequate enough to justify his place.

Sarah B, apparently a watchdog won’t do. I was thinking of taking a more psychological approach. After Jones have been exposed to “the world” and “worldly gifts”, I think he can humble himself inside his own environment (home). It is difficult to imagine a kid (young twenties) go from the projects of Boat Rock, shooting dice all day and playing play station, to millions of dollars at your disposal. I remember my freshman year in college, I got a kickback from my financial aid ($1000.) I thought I was a freakin’ millionaire. I lost a gained a lot of friends that turned out to be my haters. When it was time for me to go home, however, I humbled myself amongst my friends and family. I just simply think the opportunities of the NFL was too much for Jones way of thinking. He was placed inside “the Matrix” with no “retraining”. The Cowboys gave him a “bodyguard”; I beg to differ. That “bodyguard” act more like an “overseer”. Jones couldn’t even go to the bathroom without someone watching. That would make me very apprehensive.

Let’s see: Pacman begs for another chance to play in the NFL and JJ gives him that chance (and I am a Dallas-hater from way back). JJ even assigns a 24-hour bodyguard to Pac to keep him out of trouble. Then Pacman gets drunk and gets into a fight with his bodyguard! Not only is he too much trouble; he’s too stupid and irresponsible to play in the NFL.

Roster assessment: Offense
MR is the real deal and we play it safe and eat Redman’s deal for one more year. JP Wilson studies hard under Coach Musgrave and contends for the #2 next year. Keep an eye on what the Bucs do with QB Josh Johnson. TD loves the small school talent and Johnson was an incredible talent under former NFL QB Jim Harbaugh. Under Mad Mike and Musgrave, he could develop nicely behind MR and eventually become a quality #2.
I’m not saying that Jason Snelling is William Andrews. But as one who followed Andrews’ entire career, from THS to Auburn to Atlanta, I DO know that I feel good in saying that there are some nice similarities. No one knew of Andrews with the like of James Brooks and Joe Cribbs running behind him. But when he got his chance, Andrews, given the right situation, shocked the world. Atlanta struck gold last year when TD went after and secured Michael Turner, another back that was a hidden gem in waiting. Snelling provides us with that same package at the RB position. Given his ability to play both FB and RB, as well as contribute very solidly on special teams, he is a keeper and looking at a more active role in the offense as we preserve Turner.
Weems – Any little WR that is modeling himself after Steve Smith is okay with me. Weems will grow under Coach Robiskie. Craftiness, experience, depth, versatility, and leadership are what we get from short term investments in Booker and Ferguson.
Peelle was impressive down the stretch last season. He should benefit tremendously from watching a master at work at the TE position. He is still young enough to provide flexibility to the offense. Hartsock’s blocking skills are too invaluable both in the run and in pass protection. Zinger spends one more year learning on the PS before replacing Hartsock next season.
Our OL is on its way to becoming one of the best OLs in the league for some time. I love Dahl but I would move the bulk of Clabo inside to guard and Reynolds at RT next year. Blalock and Baker are cash money on the left. OL Coach Boudreau is outstanding!!

Roster Assessment: Defense
DT: Babs and Jerry possess great speed and are quick to disrupt the play at the line of scrimmage as the under tackles. Lewis and Johnson are the 300 pounders needed to clog the middle. Given Jerry’s injury history, we should check the wire and sign one more DT after the cuts are made. Walker offers flexibility at both positions and looks to be a nice draft steal. We could add another DT in the 2010 draft as there are some nice big tackles coming out next year. Boo Robinson of Wake Forest (325lbs) could be there in the third with one of our comp picks.
DE: Biermann and Sidbury are the future at defensive end for the Falcons. 11 years of service and an expiring contract in 2012 reflect the handwriting on the wall for Abe. At 34 years of age and given his injury history, we will not re-sign him. That cash will be used to lock up Sidbury and Biermann long term. Davis will continue to provide great depth. We have to hold on to Anderson one more year solely because of the cap issues associated with him. No one will trade for him; there is nothing there to show for his work.
LB: Lofton is a stud and will anchor this corps for the next 8-10 years. Now is the time for Nicholas. Not feeling Peterson yet; I like what I saw last year in Winborn as he played the WLB for Denver; a very under the radar player with great special teams value
Gilbert and Wire add depth and special team reliability. WLB will be no issue next season if we can secure Mizzou’s Sean Weatherspoon; the man is a player.
CB: The Falcons do not have a premier CB or what some would call a “shutdown” corner. All of our corners are #2 corners at best. This is an issue that MUST be addressed next year via the draft or free agency. Grimes will give up the occasional big play but he also seems to be in place to make the big play more often than any of the others. Owens, similar size to Grimes, brings a physical nature to his game. Grimes and Owens will be the starters on this team by years end. Houston, Jackson, and anyone else will fill the rotation.
McAllister note: When focused, C-Mac is a talent. I’m no saint here but given his issues with management in the past as well as several minor alcohol related off-field issues, we should go in another direction.
S: Coleman and DeCoud have the makings of a very good tandem. They can hit, they can handle run support, and they can cover. Moore needs to stay health for the tools are there to be a good one. Harris is an intense player and special team warrior. Brock adds depth and physical play.
FA Corners: With all due respect to our dear friend D O Led, I think that if the corners listed in his article are the best available, we should just press on with the PROCESS. Of the six he listed, three of them are 35 or older, two are coming off major issues with their knees, and two other flopped after signing lucrative deals as previous FAs. A trade may be the more feasible option but given the draft potential next season as well as the continuing of the process, I would really like to keep the picks and build long term.

Its time to move on from the Shock experience. He has had his time to learn the system, execute in the system, and make his mark. He has not. We can not wait forever. I loved watching Bergeron over at the Arena at Gwinnett with the Force; I just think that Fergie and Booker bring too much experience, across a broader spectrum. Given his speed, I wonder why we did not look at Bergy as a potential return guy. He did that well in the AFL.
As far as my championship winning FFL team, I’m like Bill Polian of the Colts, I never over-react. I build a solid core, make smooth moves when needed, and walk into the playoffs ready to seal the deal. No Keith Sweat hotel here my brother. A little retro here as we plan to give your squad an Hall and Oates ADULT EDUCATION, FFL-style. LOL..

Unca’Bob, good point, didn’t even thing about a long snapper, I will reevaluate, I guess I’m like the members of Falcons management, I have to make some cuts and add some additions.
Speaking of additions, Stirg mentioned Pacman earlier, and because of his off the field problems most disagreed with bringing him in. But Stirg does have a point, being closer to home around people who love you no matter what tends to make things better. In a world where you have millions, you never know who you can really trust, but the old faithful while trying to get a little money today that they claim they will pay back next tuesday rarely give bad advice on what your doing in your personal life. Trust me the old faithful don’t want you to get in any trouble, because that can foil their own personal plans for your money.
Outside of Pacman, why not take a look at Mike McKenzie, he was playing at a high level before he was injured against the Falcons, and he comes with the added bonus of practicing against one of, if not the best offensive scheme in the league,the Saints. Personally I see the Saints as more of a challenge for the division then the kittens of Carolina, Tampa doesn’t even enter the equation at this point, its the NFL so things could change.

Stirg, I like, how often does one bring Keith Sweat into fantasy football, but can you make it last as my team will as the rest of the league is bent over. If your going to bend em over you better make it last.
My faithful brother of the ACC has laid claim to the FFL crown, and I will admit because he is a fellow brother I won’t have a problem letting him wear it in my team’s honor. As far as AP goes, I can’t wait to see the point deductions based on his fumbles, and with old man Farve in the backfield along his side those eight man fronts are going to be very difficult. But I can’t hope against AP because if he succeeds at doing what he does, it will only make my fantasy sleeper, Percy Harvin, look that much better.

I will give you a well made point. Any team crazy enough to dare Favre to beat them with an eight man front is asking to lose. A quick slant to Berrian or Harvin will end that defensive game plan in a hurry.

I agree with you for the most part, either Farve will punish an eight man front or Peterson will suffer the consequences of having a forty year old quarterback in the backfield with him. I’m good either way, it either hurts your fantasy value with AP, or it helps mine with Percy, Mr. Polian jr. welcome to the world of Mr. Belichick jr., you can acquire the best players in the league but its my coaching and expertise that makes you and myself look good, great analysis, I expect that from a good GM, but I have to pull the strings and those strings are all under my control. If this doesn’t work, it hurts my opponent, if it does work it benefits me, your starting to get it, now prepare to hand me my trophy.
