It takes more than just physical talent to make a DL successful. It takes a scheme that allows them to effectively utilize that physical talent. So far, we haven't installed a scheme, and won't likely do so before the final preseason gm. So far, it been mostly about seeing how our DT's hold up at the point of attack, beat the OLinemen one on one and operate without any stunts or support.

In our last preseason gm, we'll see the starting DEF that will open the season. We'll also see some stunts, DLinemen playing within a scheme and coordinated support from our LB's. We now have an OFF that can score early and often, which should take the pressure off of our rushing DEF. Defending the pass will be a lot easier with the addition of DT's with pass rushing ability like PJerry, VWalker and the return of TLewis. We've also solved last yrs one man outside pass rushing problem by adding pass rushing specialist LSidbury, improved pass rusher KBiermann and replaced pass rushing liability JAnderson with CDavis.

Under HC RPetrino, we had one of the NFL's worst rushing OFF's. Smitty and his OFF staff managed to take new OFF talent and effectively merged it with the talent already on the roster to create the NFL's #2 rated rushing OFF. I see no reason they can't perform the same task with the new DEF talent they've acquired and will merge with the talent already on the roster. If you're worried about our DEF, especially our DL, exactly what are you worried about. Are you concerned that we have too much depth, speed, quickness, mobility, athleticism, versatility, experience and stamina? Remember, even with all of the experience of the 5 starters were replacing, they couldn't stop us from finishing near the bottom of the NFL in overall DEF.

Black Talon,

It is, my friend, about being strong up the middle, regardless of sport. I truely feel our D-Line will get 'er done. Having said that, once again, I hear my plllow callin' my name. BT thanks for the go 'round. Enjoyed it my friend.

UB,
Agreed on Weems, he has had a great camp, so has Ferguson, Bergeron and Williams to somewhat of a lesser extent.

Everybody talks about how DJS blew it the other night against the Rams.
So did Finn and Booker.

UB-
I agree, with that post.
A QB stepping up into 320 lbs. of Trey Lewis is not his idea of a good day.
We have to have inside push be it run or pass.
Blow up any play from the inside out, while maintaining gap control and outside containment.
That`s the whole idea behind having good base defence.

BT,

IMHOO, it would not surprise to see E Weems in the slot. From everything I've seen, he has not only landed a roster spot, he truly may an every day player. And not just on ST.
