Well-Oiled Machine: Falcons-Rams Offensive Analysis

Model of Efficiency by Starting Offense

Model of Efficiency

Model of Efficiency (AP Photo/Jeff Roberson)

The Falcons allayed many fears Friday night when they came out with a sense of urgency and fire that seemed to be missing in the first contest against Lions. Just as you can’t get too worried about a bad preseason performance, you can’t get too excited about a solid one either. However, the offense came out and showed why it can be considered to have a lethal, explosive potential as a unit that can put up points, eat up the clock, and convert third downs. The defense came out with an intensity and fire that was certainly missing in Detroit. Many of the missed assignments seemed to be corrected and the defensive players were much more in the mold of the fast and striking defenders we had hoped for talking about in the off-season.

Quarterbacks
Matty Ice came out was on point, sharp, and in full command of all his loaded arsenal on offense. Ryan looked precise and accurate completing passes to his favorite target of last year Roddy White, a great new relationship with Michael Jenkins, and his new favorite person in Tony Gonzalez. Ryan completed back-to-back 70+ touchdown scoring drives converting several third downs, only missing a pass deep to Roddy White down the sidelines. The new addition of Tony Gonzalez was on full display on the second drive when Ryan hit the new tight end on a beautiful 14 yard strike in the end zone, putting it high where he likes it.

Missed Opportunity (Chris Compton/AJC)

Missed Opportunity? (Chris Compton/AJC)

DJ Shockley had his big chance playing with the first team offensive line and having a pretty bad night overall. Shockley continues to be haunted by inconsistency and never being able to put a string of good drives or performances together. His teammates certainly didn’t do him any favors. Marty Booker bobbled a pass that should’ve been caught for a first down, but was instead tipped and intercepted. Brian Finneran also dropped a wide open pass later in the game that would’ve been an easy first down. Still, Shockley deserves much of the blame because he did have numerous opportunities to do good things and prove once and for all that he deserves the backup spot. Unless the coaches saw the game differently, Shockley is making it real hard for the coaches to justify letting Chris Redman go, who has proven he can start in the NFL and do well. Redman looks to have a big chance of his own against the Chargers on Saturday to prove he deserves to stay. DJ continues to force throws and not ever get into a good rhythm. Seemingly, Coach Smith and Coach Mularkey would want to use his abilities more in a wildcat type, dual threat potential, but none of that was seen. John Parker Wilson has certainly shown that he is capable of being a long term project in the 3rd backup role, leading the Falcons right down the field and looking extremely comfortable in the Falcons offense. The battle now looks to be between Shockley and Redman for the number 2 spot, like many of us imagined. What did you think of Matt Ryan’s second performance: great as usual or a weak Rams defense? Right now who do you keep: Shockley or Redman? Will the hometown hero Shockley and Falcons part ways? Parker Wilson a lock for the 3rd spot at this point?

Running Backs

A Great Night (Chris Lee/St.Louis Post-Dispatch)

A Great Night (Chris Lee/St.Louis Post-Dispatch)

Michael Turner continues to impress and prove why he’s considered one of the best running backs in the league, busting out a 43 yard run on the first possession and finishing with 65 yards on 7 carries and a touchdown in only one series. Pretty impressive start to the preseason so far, showing the burst, power, and superb ability of breaking tackles and rumbling for more yards. Norwood entered on the second series and had a better outing than Detroit, rushing 8 times for 36 yards, averaging out to 4.5 yards a carry. Norwood looks to have many opportunities to have a huge year, which he wants to make the most of in his contract year and prove he can be an every down back. Jason Snelling had a great night in the fight to be the 3rd option at running back, rushing for 61 yards on 12 attempts averaging over 5 yards and showing a quickness that many felt he may lack. Fairly or not, if Thomas Brown can’t prove he can stay healthy, than he will make it tough for the coaches to keep him on the roster. Potential only goes so far if he can’t stay on the field.

Wide Receiver/Tight Ends

A Thing of Beauty (Jeff Roberson/AP)

A Thing of Beauty (Jeff Roberson/AP)

Save for a couple of drops and bobbles, the wide receivers had a good night in St. Louis. Roddy White continues to show no ill effects from the missing time, hauling in 3 passes for 38 yards and converting several first downs. Michael Jenkins added a nice pass for 11 yards on a first down conversion as well. The Tony Gonzalez-Matt Ryan connection looks to be picking up more and more steam as the Birds head toward the regular season, showing his excellent ability to move the chains and being that red-zone threat the Falcons sorely missed last year. TG made an amazing leaping touchdown catch over several defenders for the second score. Finneran started again in the slot and had not catches, but did drop an easy throw by Shockley. Several receivers had a couple of nice catches as well with Troy Bergeron on a 17 yard haul, Marty Booker had 2 catches for 20 yards, and Verron Haynes added 2 catch and runs for 34 yards out of the backfield. The fight for the remaining backup spots continues to be one of the most heated battles on the roster. Keith Zinger even showed some nice hands catching a nice 15 yard pass from Parker Wilson. After Roddy, Jenks, and BFinn, who takes the remaining 2-3 spots? Weems a lock to make roster? Should Falcons go with vets Ferguson and Booker or youngsters Bergeron and Kelly?

Offensive Line
The O-Line looked great as they have so far this preseason. The line cleared the way for Turner to rush for 65 yards on 7 carries on the first possession alone. Even though Norwood didn’t have a fantastic day, the line assisted him on averaging almost 5 yards a carry. Jason Snelling had an excellent day with the O-Lines help. The entire offensive line, first and second string, combined to only allow one sack, which Shockley shares some of the blame for by not being able to feel the rush from the outside. The Falcons only carried 9 offensive lineman last year, so someone looks to be the odd man out after the starting five. Free agent pickups Brett Romberg and Will Svitek look to be safe as experienced backups and rookie Garrett Reynolds has had an excellent start to the year, so the battle for the remaining one or two spots looks to be between Ben Wilkerson, Quinn Ojinnaka, and rookies undrafted free agents Jose Valdez and Ryan Stanchek. How’s the O-Line looked so far to you? Who makes up the backup line? Should the Falcons carry 9 or 10 offensive linemen on the roster?

1. Let’s see how Redman performs in week 3. He will probaly fare better since this week will have an actual game plan.
2. Snelling may have locked up his spot. TBrown needs a break out game or he will be gone.
3. I say keep Ferguson and another youngster (your pick)
4. OLine looks good. I say keep 10. If the defense faulters, an OLine injury could disrupt our stellar offense. Keep Matt feeling fat and happy.
5. On a defensive lark, let’s start the entire group of those second on depth chart and see which one’s really step up. It is all about competition.

Sure looked a lot better than they did last week against an 0-16 team. Shockley threw into coverage too many times, telegraphed his throws and didn’t see some open receivers. I hate to say it, because I really wanted DJ to break out and prove himself, but he has performed about equally with Wilson, who is an undrafted free agent. Unless Redman falls on his face this week he has the #2 job sewn up. The Falcons will feel that DJ has not learned the system well and has not improved over the last two years and release him. They will hope that Wilson will improve in the future, even if they feel that he is the equal to DJ now.

9 on line, tbrown better prove his worth quick, shock better pray 4 shot of redemption, hope we cut red just 4 money purposes but if shock dont step up we keepin him,i like booker over ferg simply bc on 3rd down tg and marty = two very realiable hands but we also have rw n mj so lol but guess between ferg n mb gonna come down to who’s getting the play book down best and if marty can block decently. i prefer booker but either be good in my opinion. also just belive this defense gonna be top 15 this year and thats gonna be all we need for this offense, really cant wait for season so close to being here. go falconsssssssssss and dawgsssssssssssssss

Boy did that Matt Ryan to Gonzalez TD pass look good. This is one time I think a big acquisition is going to live up to the hype.

In addition to Turner being fast and elusive; no way one man is bringing him down. I think the other running backs will be Norwood, Snelling, Ovie, and Haynes. T Brown might catch on with another team but he is not the football player Snelling is.

I still think Booker would be a great backup and come in handy during a long season. Weems looks like he will make the team, and I hope they keep Ferguson as well. Douglass will be back next year and we can also draft new young receivers. I say go with the veterans this year.

Apparently I missed alot in my absence, Strig resurfaced, Falcon21 and BT returned, CBrass has gotten to be a a stellar member of the cage and D3 has just took the cage to a whole new level. I’m officially back in the fold, and its good to be back. Quickly on a side note, Seminole call off the search party, I just needed some quick hibernation time but now let the pollenation begin. JJ, my good buddy JJ, my old friend JJ, what would the birdcage and this fantasy season be without JJ, missed ya buddy and don’t worry I brought back some candy and a long list of treats for you, trust me when I say, you didn’t go unnoticed. Nookah thanks for the shout out, the cameo appearances are over I’m back where I belong.

D3 has had so much going on in the cage that catching up with the readings and postings are exciting but there’s no point in me going back because of the excellent post and analysis of the boss and his comrads in the cage, so I will just pick up from this point as if I never left. I saw a very redemptive game from our birds this 2nd preseason game. Its only preseason but the sense of urgency was much improved and what shadows were cast during the first preseason game quickly have begin to disappear. I expect many more ups and downs even during the regular season, but this second preseason game really got the itch for the upcoming season burning again. Most of you know I’m a Jacket, but I had high hopes for DJ because he’s home grown, but DJ might have put himself into a bit of a pinch. He has looked good against second in third teamers over the years but with an opportunity to perform with the first teamers he faltered badly. I hope it was just nerves and he can redeem himself the next time out but it does not look good at this point. Jason Snelling looked really good and the play of the OL was excellent throughout. Defensively what a big difference from preseason game 1 to game 2, and this week I here there’s a chance William Moore will return, I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do. Well thats all for now change, more to come later, gotta take baby steps to get back into the fold or else I could go on all day, once again glad to be back.

Good morning cagers

Looks like a good day comein.Shock did’nt look to good with the # 1 O.But he looked as if he didn’t have a lot of help.I got to wtch the whole game last night .The O looked very good on those fist two drives.I think there ready.Snelling looked good to me also .I think the O i as ready and good enough to take on any team..
Shockley may have sunk his ship but maybe he will have chnce to redeam himself before its all over ,if not may the best man win, I like Shock but its time the # 2 slot was filled anb he may not get it..
I still wonder if we might pick up some other players before the reg games begin ?I see that down south ,you think the D will end up in the top 15 ,That would be good with this good O to stay in the hunt.I sill think we will win 10 games if we stay healthy. The big key to that will be the first two games on the win side. That will bring a confadnce to our players they need and it may also give them eough edge to go in and win # 3 game. The way I see it is if they were to win that third game then the NFL had better look out because here come the birds and anything could be posible from that point on.Man I look foword to this season .Bring it on

I think we need to wait until the Charger’s game before anyone annoints Redman with the #2 job. Chris looked absolutely horrible against Detroit and the subsequent wide open invitation for D.J. to perform in Friday night’s contest might to have put a little “Sergio” into Shockley’s mental game plan. Regardless, who’s to say that Redman doesn’t come back with a similarly unimpressive outing as he had against Detroit and once again give D.J. another chance.

Also, JPW is giving D.J. great reason to worry about #3. If a player in the NFL is given time to assess and doesn’t progress, they usually change their address.

I’m really surprised you didn’t mention V Haynes in your RB recap. He had two nice catch/runs. Its the reason he’s likely to make the team over T Brown. Haynes has always been a good receiver out of the backfield.

If we can find a place for him on special teams, he’ll be a better 3rd down receiver than Ovie.

Hello guys and gals. I’m back after visiting the family and celebrating my little-big brothers 23rd bday. Had a great time!

D3,

Nice work once again. The O looked great. I’m not going to get too excited because the Rams looks like that may struggle on D this season. I will say that the first two drives by the first team was damn near flawless. They have great chemistry working. Matty and the receivers looked to be on the same page. The O-Line proved great protection and paved the way for Turner to break off that nice run. That facial Matty took scared the hell outta me glad to see that he was ok.
The D looked so much better kinda put some of may fears to rest. M. Peterson looked so much faster when he was out there as well as the rest of the D. I’m going to reframe from putting my foot up JAnderson’s a$$ right now!!! My patience is really running out with him. Shock didn’t really help his case. He tried to force things. Yes the receivers really didn’t help him but like someone said before he telegraphed his passes and just didn’t make good decisions. To me it looks like he was nervous and was trying to hard. Snelling had a great outing. He ran hard and took some minds and bodies with him when he did. That’s all for now more a little later.

Sarah B,

Was catching up on the post from the weekend and I saw that you recommended that us southerns get up and see that Great Lakes and I’ll have to agree with you. My mother is originally from Detroit and we went up there a couple of years ago and the lake are a thing of beauty.

Based on what we’ve seen in two games here’s my rundown:

1. QB – CR #2, JPW #3
2. RB – Keep Snelling; Haynes and T Brown go
3. WR – I like Ferg and Booker, but with our 3 vets (RW, MJ, and BFinn), why not just keep Weems and one of the best of the other young guys (Chandler, Berg, Kelly). You only need Ferg or Book if you have an injury to the top 3. If that’s your worry, then I say Ferg (like him on special teams).
4. OL – Keep 9. I’d rather keep more DL. If you can do both, then keep 10. I do want to see the OL we drafted. Gotta groom for the future.

As a Dawg, I want to see DJ and TBrown make the squad, but I just can’t back them with their play so far. The biggest thing I came away from the game was God help us if Ryan goes down. I might rather have JPW under center than CR or DJ. Regardless, it doesn’t look like we have a decent option at #2.

Greetings Cagers!!!!

Well, well, well, it’s so good to see my friend back in the place. WR good to have you back and you have hit the ground running!!!

I was encouraged by the improved performance of the defense. However, one swallow does not a summer make and furthermore it’s preseason. I am still looking forward to our performance vs. the Chargers and the Ravens so we can get a truer picture of who will make the roster, especially on the defensive side of the ball. As far as the WR’s go, I would give the edge to Ferguson as he has shown some flashes of brilliance and toughness on ST’s and our coaching staff loves versatility.

As far as the QB position is concerned, DJ may be running out of time. I know Redman is rather expensive but we have to make sure our most experienced backup QB is available just in case something goes wrong with MR (God forbid). DJ has not done himself any justice and JPW has certainly seized the opportunity to get some attention from the coaching staff.

The backup RB position is steadily being lost by TB. Unfortunately for him, he has been unable to stay on the field and that’s really bad for him. I really hope TB can turn it around in the next 2 games left in the preseason. JSnelling has made a statement and we know Norwood will be there. There seems to be a definite effort on the part of the coaching staff to allow Norwood to run more between the tackles this year. Although I know this is preseason, he still has not convinced me that he is comfortable with this style, thus his increased number of carries this offseason. The staff is giving him as many looks as possible to try to make him more comfortable. This is evidence that our coaching staff is making a concerted effort to reduce the load of The Burner this season.

As far as the OL is concerned I think we’ll carry 9. Ojinnaka may squeeze in and make the roster.

After all is said and done, I am pumped for the new season and can’t wait for that Miami game. So sorry I can’t make it to the game but I’ll be watching it from somewhere.

Go Falcons!!!!

Nuff respect everytime!!!

Great Mon(dane) Afternoon Cagers! Quick hit while I’m on break:

Curious – I’ve made the point many times about it being preseason. Can’t read too much into it either way, good or bad.

Boxcarar – No night call, she’s just a nite owl like me when I post. Great points all around. I really hate to say it, but it looks as though DJ might finally have run out of chances to prove himself. They will HAVE to re-negotiate Redman’s contract though, b/c there’s no way we pay 4.5 million for a backup when we have to resign Dahl, Clabo, and maybe Norwood. Thomas Brown just can’t stay healthy.

Ed-Covington – I know, I was hoping for a great game, but regardless of situations, DJ just can’t create any consistency. I do fault Smith and Mularkey a touch for not using his running skills a little more.

downsouth – Excellent points all around. I hope we keep 10 OL, because you can never have enough. If Redman weren’t making 4.5 mill, I think the decision would already be over. I would rather have Ferguson simply for age, Booker(33) and Ferguson(29), but Booker has had more catches so we’ll see. Maybe we keep both in hopes that Ferguson might be a long-term 4th or 5th option.

Real Falcon – I hate to see this day come, but DJ can only get so many chances.

Ethan – Yeah, I like to throw a some good food recipes out there.

WR – MY MAN & LONG LOST FRIEND!!!! We sent out a couple of search and rescues for you. Great to have you back.

nhe – Meant to put Haynes in with RB’s but put him with WR’s by accident.

Coop, I like your breakdown, good job. However, I think you underestimate Redman. He can be a pretty serviceable and useful backup if needed. Remember he has proved that he can win with this team. He is not Matty Ice but he can stand in. He is 3-3 as a starter, not great but as I said serviceable.

Go Falcons!!!!

I think if we win the first two games in the reguler season it will build a confdince with our players that could even get a # 3 game win and if that happens then watch out its know holds bared. Also I think if those first two games go in th win side we will win 10 games,as long as we stay healhy. And if we win that third game then lookout NFL here comes the Birds. You never know what the outcome will be.Snelling looked good to me also.

I’m having a nice day. Glad to see your home safely fom your visit. Family should always be priority one.

Lady Brass, having read your 11:05 post, today is graduation day. You have snatched the pebble from my hand, Grasshopper. It is time for you to leave.

Bonehead play of the day…DJS, sorry homers, came to the line and set it. There were two Ram defenders on his right, left unguarded. Why doesn’t he check down prior to setting the line? He continues the snap count, and when the ball was snapped, he did not seem to notice the pass rush. Why didn’t he take a timeout before the snap? Instead he takes a sack and fumbles. What was he thinking??

Unca’ Bob,

I still have a lot to learn. Judging by yours and many others comments I’ve learned alot but there is so much more to learn. You’re right about DJ even I knew he should have changed plays or called a time out. I was yelling at the tv “they’re coming they’re coming” but he didn’t do anything to help himself in that situation. I’m probably the biggest DJ fan in here and want to see him succeed but he has to make an adjustment during those type of plays. Those are the type of mental lapses that will quickly cause a coach to lose patience with a player.

UB, If I am thinking of the same play (has to be unless he fumbled more than once), I think there was a TE that ran off the right side of the line and let both blitzer by without even a chuck. I remember thinking it looked like a very poorly executed TE screen (especially since DJ looked to his left). Either way, I agree with you and CBrass. He needs to recognize the D and adjust.

Ok where has Barry been?? I read you guys daily at work but I only manage to get maybe one or two post in a week. So my question is where’s the “ONE HEARTBEAT” speech?? Barry was great at that but I havnt seen him in the cage?

Also with our first 3 games of the season.. New England doesn’t scare me. I think the Panther’s and Dolphin’s will play us tougher. Panther’s because they have a good run game and the Dolphin’s you can just never really tell. But New England they have no LB’s and there secondary is just as bad as ours. Thomas hasn’t panned out for them and Vrabel is gone..the kid from Tenn’s is a stud but so is Lofton. I feel great about our chance’s starting the season 2-1 or 3-0 but I feel Carolina will be the biggest game of the first three. We HAVE to come out and pop this division in the mouth and not have to prove ourself’s in the second divison games with them or the Aint’s.

I could type on forever but I leave in 4 mins from work so you guys and gal’s in the cage have a great day.. I have my Madden 10 coming in the mail, let’s see how many people laugh at me this year when I pick the Falcons :)

Great showing by the Birds on Friday night. Most of the weaknesses seen in the first preseason game seemed to have been corrected. Can’t say enough about the offense.

Lil’ Dave,

As far as Carolina is concerned Beason has a MCL sprain and I think Stewart has some type of nagging injury that has kept him sidelined most of training camp/preseason and my spill over into the season. They’re going to play us tough well…because it’s always a tough game with them. We’ll just have to wait and see. Also I didn’t know that NE was in should bad shape on D. True it’s just the preseason but I’d rather look good in the preseason than bad. And yes it was the Rams, but you have to play who is on the schedule. What’s up Cage..

Back in the TeePee after having to deal with a little family emergency. All is well and the TeePee is blessed. Birdman, my prayers are with your family as you deal with your situation.

My ACC brother, WR, welcome back. I see that the Ramblin Wreck made it back!! Glad that you are back and ready to rock brother.

Outstanding effort this past weekend by the offense. I loved it and can not wait to shout like a school girl on Saturday night when we handle the Chargers.

Back in a few to discuss other points and check in on the Cage fam!!

Great Mon(dane) Evening Fellow Cagers! Hope everyone’s having an excellent start to the week, with a fantastic ending including the opening of the 2009 Atlanta Falcons Season, albeit preseason. It’s a huge matchup against a top-tier team in San Diego and its THE game of the preseason where all teams treat it like the real deal.

JWW – I do agree with that fact about giving DJ, and really more importantly Redman a chance for him to prove himself as well. Many are forgetting that DJ outperformed Redman in Detroit. Redman also has to justify his HUGE salary to sit on the bench. I have a really hard time seeing us spending $4.5 million on a backup. I could see it if we were ready for a serious Super Bowl run, but I don’t think we’re there just yet. The biggest question mark to date.

CBrass – Great points as always. Peterson did look much, much better as the whole defense did overall. I, and many other fans I believe feel the exact same way with JA#98. How many rookies drafted much later does it take to come in and show up an 8th overall draft pick?

Coop – Excellent post my man. As a fellow Dawg, I have hoped and pulled for DJ and TBrown to make the team as they are some of my favorite UGA players of all time, but DJ just can’t seem to put it all together and TBrown just can’t stay healthy for anything, so I have to agree with you. We may keep 10 OL, since it now looks like TBrown may not make the squad. Great call on the WRs as well. I say we keep Ferguson as well, younger and could be a long term 4th or 5th option after BFinn retires.

Nookah – How’s it going my rasta brother from the North? Agreed on Ferguson. He’s younger and could be a long-term option for us as a 4th or 5th receiver. Booker has played OK, but he’s dropped a few balls and he’s 33. True competition has seen DJ not make the most of it and JPW has. Right on point with TBrown. Potential can only go so far, I know he may not can help it with injuries, but Snelling has already made the team IMO, its just a matter of whether or not they decide to carry 5 RBs or not. Maybe not, since we might carry 10 OL, 5 DTs, 5 DEs, and possible 6 WRS. Thats almost half the roster.

BIRDMAN – Thanks my brother. Great to have you in here as a regular now.

Lil’ Dave – So nice to have you in the Cage when you can pop in from work. I’m holding off on Madden10 until some of the boredom sets in, maybe around January. Between preseason NFL, College coming, regular NFL season, and Fantasy football, just too much going on to squeeze in Madden right now. Let me know how our Falcons are.

Krebs – Looks like our UGA boys DJ and TBrown might be on their way out. Hate to see it, but DJ has always seemed to “press” since he’s been up in the pros. TBrown is just always friggin’ hurt. Support for homers only goes so far.

ATL.BIRDS – Certainly starting to look that way.

BT,

Watching the game also. Our OL is going to be key when we play the Ravens. Have to keep them out of the back field. Well with Gonzo paroling the middle they may not be able to blitz that much…right? That’s any team for that matter.

D3, the Dawgs have a huge game coming up and I truly believe they are going to be better than last year.

The Falcons D will definitely be tested by Rivers and the Chargers. If we can hold our own on defense against San Diego everything will be fine. Whatever weaknesses we have will most likely be exposed and give TD and Smitty a real idea of which way they have to go.

The Dawgs fate all season is going to rest with the D. what happened with Willie’s boys last year was an abomination. The O line will be stronger. We have very good backs and possibly great receivers. If Cox or one of the two freshman can stay upright and read the D, we should be fine scoring points. But if we can’t find a way to TACKLE and stay with our assignments on D, I may throw my UGA nome through the TV.

Saw the story about TJ Duckett getting released today. Man that 2002 draft was brutal. When you see how a bad draft can hurt your team for years, it is tough to think of what we could have gotten instead of JA. I still want to see him make it, but let’s be honest, it’s time to move on. Keep him as a backup until you can afford to trade or cut him (whenever that is) from a cap standpoint. Hell, put him thrid string behind Davis and Sidbury. Maybe he’ll find some fire trying to get off the bench.

Excellent Tuesday (No Feel Day) Fellow Cagers!

Oh, So Close – Can you all feel it? Ever so close to the start of football. 3 Days Until High School Friday Night Lights, 12 Days to College (technically 10 days to Thursday Night Football), 20 Days Until Falcons vs. ‘Fins at the Terror-Dome, and 4 Days until Falcons-Chargers @ the Dome.

Late Start – Speaking of the game, why the late start time for the Falcons-Chargers. 8 pm on a Saturday night for a preseason game? I could understand if it were Falcons-Bears Sunday night, regular season game, but good Lord. If you don’t live in the city than you likely won’t get home until midnight and there’s your weekend gone. The House CEO and I will be heading to tailgate and probably the first half. Got to pace ourselves for the long season and want to get home to our lil’ guy at a decent hour.

Bird Cage Fantasy League – Are we still on for the Bird Cage Fantasy League? Only have heard from Unca’ Bob, Sarah B., and JJ confirming the draft on saturday morning. WR, Seminole, Stirg, jason, & BT are you all still in for sat @ 10 am for draft?

Boxcarar – Yeah, its amazing how some people will actually waste their time solely trying to spew hate and create vitiriol among others. Life is too d@— short in my opinion. I could understand if the Falcons were their team, but its not. Its like me going to the Bucs, Saints, or Panthers blogs to throw s—- against the wall and see what sticks. Gimme a break. Just glad they’re not over here.

Unca’ Bob – Hilarious. Weems is all but a lock in my opinion.

Ed – Great point. Nice to have a couple of real tests to show what we really have, so we might have time to do some dealing if need be. I think our LB corps might get that look.

Coop – Nice analysis on Dawgs DEF. It was beyond pathetic and embarassing. For all those who think Martinez has changed, better think again because the story I read not too long ago had him offering up every excuse imaginable to why our DEF was so terrible. He never took full responsibility at all. I have to agree with you on JA. I still have hope, but when El Sid got two sacks in one game, Davis had 4 last year, and Biermann had 2 sacks in his rookie year. I think many fans have given him every opportunity and he simply has blown them. If he were drafted in the second or later, it may be understandable, but 8th overall is looking like a pipe dream.

Later guys and gals. Defensive Analysis coming tomorrow……….

D3, I’m in for the fantasy league and draft at 10am saturday morning. Now back to our own beloved birds, Sid looked really good this past weekend. I was under the impression that the DE spot opposite of Abe would be between Davis and Andersen, but Sid might be making a push for at least being the past rushing specialist on passing downs. Andersen has continued to be Andersen and Davis really hasn’t stood out, but its only been two preseason games so that spot obviously is still up for grabs. I’m one of the first to admit that I believed that Andersen could have a breakout season this year, but upon further analysis I realized that Andersen hasn’t had a good showing as far as sacks are concerned, even in the preseason, and thats not including this year. I’m still hoping for the best from Jamaal but I’m starting to lean toward the worst at this point. I know the defensive analysis is coming tomorrow, but that was just something that recently stuck out to me.

We’ve heard numerous comments about our coaches not taking advantage of Shockey’s running ability. Has anyone considered that maybe our coaches are more interested in having a more traditional pocket QB as backup, and wants him to stay in the pocket when pressured to see how he reacts. To make our OFF work effectively, the QB has to trust the OL and continue his progression through his reads.

In Shockey’s def, his yrs of NFL experience isn’t that much of an advantage. Remember, he’s had a different HC, OC, and has learned a different OFF each yr, not to mention he missed an entire yr due to injury. Right now, with so many UGA and hometown fans pressuring him to succeed, he’s probably under more pressure than any QB on the roster. It’s obvius our coaches what him to step up and claim the @2 backup spot. If he had been successful early, it’s a safe bet Redmon would be available for trade.

It’s amazing what opportunity and competition can do to improve a players performance. Right now, TJohnson and JJefferson have had possibly the best camp of the DT’s. Unless someone really stands out during the next 2 preseason gms, look for TLewis to reclaim his starting DT spot. He has the best combination of size, speed, quickness, mobility, strength and experience as well as pass rushng and run stopping ability. He’s a perfect compliment to JBabineaux.

As soon as LSidbury improves his ability to play the run, he’ll either replace JAbraham or CDavis as our starting DE. Some of you have expressed concerns about our secondary and certain players in particular. If we get a solid pass rush, there will be little to worry about. If we don’t, it won’t matter who we have in the secondary, or how tall they are.

The third QB is usually a developmental guy. Since DJ has not shown development after 4 training camps, he will likely not make the team. Too bad for his fans, and him as well, being such a nice guy.

Coop

August 25th, 2009
5:23 pm

Ken – Totally agree. Spot on with DJ, but moreso the D line. The game is won in the trenches. If the D line is in the backfield disrupting the run or pressuring the QB, the secondary will look awesome. If not, most NFL QBs and WRs can pick a D apart with time. That’s why I credit our O line last year. The way they kept Ds off Ryan and opened holes for Turner is where our OFF success came from.

Now, with all that said, I am still not convinced our D line (in any rotation) can put a consistent push up the middle and contain on the outside. I hope I’m worng, but if not our corners are gonna be toast.

Coach Ken,

Great post as always, my friend. Just a thought. DJ Shockley is in his second year under Coach Smith. He hasn’t shown me that he is able to adjust to the system. The same system M Ryan picked up in just a few months and ran with it. JWP is in his very first Camp, and seems to have adjusted extremely well. As SPS pointed out the #3 QB should be a developmental project to eventually replace the #2 QB. After four years I have not seen the process continue for DJS. We have already had a strong armed QB that was agile.

Unca' Bob

August 25th, 2009
7:17 pm

Coop,

It’s my feeling, the more our young DT’s play together, the better they adjust. I guess what I’m trying to get to, as they truely get in game situations, the more they shine through attrition on the other teams O-Line. I feel we have more than enough DT’s to wear down the strongest O-Line. Perhaps I’m wrong.

WR

August 25th, 2009
7:40 pm

Seminole, I figured the sound of that Rambling Wreck would have scared you out of the FFL. Coach Ken, good analysis as always, but I have to go with the Unca on this one, Shockley should be starting to show a little more development at this point. Yes he has been in different systems but he’s also an NFL QB, and he’s expected to digest a playbook no matter who puts it in front of him, especially when he’s in the second year of the same system, but time will tell.

Coop, I understand your doubts about the DT’s, but consider this, with Babs last year the Falcons were getting some interior push, but they also had big Grady who just served as basically a wall of sorts, thats why they went after Peria Jerry, they want the same interior presents against the run, but they also want some pressure on QB’s up the middle. Babs provided part of that pressure and with the camps that TLewis, TJohnson, Walker, JJefferson, and not to mention their number one pick, are having I think Babs will get some help this year.

Good evening Cagers.
While we are still talking about the offense.
IMO, the job for the slot WR position is still wide open.
Finns skills have seemed to have diminished and he is no lock to be much more that a spot player IMO if, he fends off the younger guys?

Everyone seems to like ”Ice Cream” Weems making it on ST`s, I think the same can be said for Ferguson.
Any guy that can consistently make good clean hits on the kickoff return man inside the 20 (as Ferguson has done) has a spot on my roster.

If my thinking is correct? That leaves only two WR roster slots open (if they keep six) for Finn, Williams, Booker and Bergeron to battle for.

It pains to say it (as much as I like Finn) but I would be letting him and Booker go and keeping Chandler Williams and Bergeron.

Unca' Bob

August 25th, 2009
8:29 pm

Falcon fans,

Push up the middle is extremly important. The combination of our DT’s to put pressure up the middle, far exceeds pressure from the outside. No question that DE’s need to apply outside pressure, but with no pressure up the middle, it’s means nothing. The QB takes one step forward and avoids the outside rush. The inside pressure means the QB has no where to step up into. Total disruption of the play…Just a thought

BlackTalon

August 25th, 2009

Uncle Bob-
I agree with you on the importance the inside push from the DT`s.
That`s not to say outside pressure and containment is not important.
You need both along with the all important run stopping.
If you can

BlackTalon

Inability to stop the run would make make a third and long pass rush an almost moot atribute and it would be a main factor in keeping the Falcons high powered ball control offense off of the field.

I agree, with that post.
A QB stepping up into 320 lbs. of Trey Lewis is not his idea of a good day.
We have to have inside push be it run or pass.
Blow up any play from the inside out, while maintaining gap control and outside containment.
That`s the whole idea behind having good base defence.

It takes more than just physical talent to make a DL successful. It takes a scheme that allows them to effectively utilize that physical talent. So far, we haven’t installed a scheme, and won’t likely do so before the final preseason gm. So far, it been mostly about seeing how our DT’s hold up at the point of attack, beat the OLinemen one on one and operate without any stunts or support.

In our last preseason gm, we’ll see the starting DEF that will open the season. We’ll also see some stunts, DLinemen playing within a scheme and coordinated support from our LB’s. We now have an OFF that can score early and often, which should take the pressure off of our rushing DEF. Defending the pass will be a lot easier with the addition of DT’s with pass rushing ability like PJerry, VWalker and the return of TLewis. We’ve also solved last yrs one man outside pass rushing problem by adding pass rushing specialist LSidbury, improved pass rusher KBiermann and replaced pass rushing liability JAnderson with CDavis.

Under HC RPetrino, we had one of the NFL’s worst rushing OFF’s. Smitty and his OFF staff managed to take new OFF talent and effectively merged it with the talent already on the roster to create the NFL’s #2 rated rushing OFF. I see no reason they can’t perform the same task with the new DEF talent they’ve acquired and will merge with the talent already on the roster. If you’re worried about our DEF, especially our DL, exactly what are you worried about. Are you concerned that we have too much depth, speed, quickness, mobility, athleticism, versatility, experience and stamina? Remember, even with all of the experience of the 5 starters were replacing, they couldn’t stop us from finishing near the bottom of the NFL in overall DEF.
