After a very successful Friday Night Lights event at Brookwood High on Friday night, the Atlanta Falcons concluded their Allstate All-Access Weekend with the Roam the Dome event at the Georgia Dome. It was a great environment that allowed fans to come see the team up-close and get a feel for what it looks like from the “good” seats. It was a very family friendly affair that allowed the kids to run around and enjoy themselves, concessions were open, and there were on the field games and activities after the scrimmage. Autographs were also available for season ticket holders who requested the free tickets in time. There was a coin toss, singing of the national anthem, and the new Falcons cheerleaders debuted at halftime. The event had the feel of a spring practice game for those of you who have attended one. Everything wasn’t free however. Free parking was available in the orange lot, but that filled up pretty quickly and the rest had to pay to park. If you’re not into the long and technical play-by-play action, you can fast forward to the end and check out the overall, final impressions of the scrimmage.
1st Team Defense
The first quarter had the starting defense against the 2nd or 3rd team offense, not sure what it would be considered. Players that were noticeably absent from the first team DEF included no signs of Peria Jerry, Trey Lewis, or Curtis Lofton. The starters saw Abraham, Thomas Johnson, Babineaux, and I think Kroy Biermann may have started, but they rotated so much that you couldn’t really tell. Gilbert filled in for Lofton, Nicholas and Peterson as the outside backers, with DeCoud, Coleman, Grimes, and Houston rounding out the defensive secondary. Thomas Brown looked good, fast, and quick and looks to have completely recovered from his injury. DJ Shockley started the series and had nice, crisp passes and seemed to have a good command of the huddle and the offense. DJ had a good fade pass to Eric Weems to the outside and Weems made a nice over the head catch for a first down. Next play Abraham got in for a sack. Mike Peterson looked good and aggressive flying around the field. DJ scrambled around on the next play and threw a pass that was little high to TE Jason Rader, and Rader had a very un-athletic jump and missed the pass. Bad looking play. Defense in general looked ok and you certainly can’t gauge a lot without full pads, but the second team offense drove pretty well.
1st Team Offense
Expected starters on offense with Brian Finneran starting opposite Michael Jenkins being the only exception. Matt Ryan had a nice play action roll out and dump off pass to Brian Finneran for a 6 yard game. Turner power lead for a 2 yard gain, which of course we don’t know the true gain with no pads. Troy Bergeron (#11) got a lot of playing time on the first team offense working in the slot. 3rd and short give to Ovie Mughelli who bulled ahead for an easy first down. The next play was a mess. Give to Turner, who then handed it to Jenkins on a double reverse that was dropped for a pretty big loss. It was hard to get all the players who started on the second team defense, but I know I saw Tony Tiller(CB), Willie Evans(DE), Jamaal Fudge(S), Chris Owens(CB), Peria Jerry(DT), Robert James(OLB), Tywain Myles(DT), Vance Walker(DT), Eric Brock(S), Spencer Adkins(OLB-maybe?), Lawrence Sidbury(DE), and Antoine Harris(S). Ryan play action fake, 5 yard dump pass to Justin Peele. Ryan dropped straight back and had a nice thrown pass to Jenkins on a long curl route that was run very well. Misdirection lead to Michael Turner for a short gain. Drop back pass from Ryan to Norwood in the flats that looked good. Nice looking empty backfield set with Turner lining up wide, Jenkins and Finneran out wide with Gonzalez at TE, and Bergeron in the slot (I think?). As we all expected, Gonzalez really can stretch the field running a deep out or corner route, leaving Jenkins one-on-one with a beautiful slant for a touchdown.
2nd Team Offense
Biermann, Jason Jefferson, Thomas Johnson, and JA#98 starting on the D-Line. John Parker Wilson looked pretty good overall for a rookie playing against the first team defense, in my opinion. Nothing spectacular, but overall pretty good. JPW had a pass to Chandler William that was tipped and should’ve been picked by Tony Gilbert, but Williams looked it in to his credit. They drove down the field with Parker Wilson at the helm with not too many problems. No sign of Peria Jerry or Trey Lewis on the first team defense. Chevis Jackson was called for a pass interference in the end zone against Darren Mougey that would’ve put them on the 1 yard line.
Took a break from the action and came back to see the first team offense in the red zone. They had Gonzalez split out wide at one point, using a four wideout set with Jenkins, Finneran, and Bergeron in the slot. Next play was a thing of beauty, Gonzalez ran a deep out in the end zone with Jenkins(I think?) running a cross or slant take-off route leaving a beautifully thrown ball to Gonzalez who made a spectacular catch in the end zone for a touchdown over two defenders. Nice way to end the half.
2nd Half
Shockley directing the 2nd team offense and threw a pass that was a catchable ball, but Chris Houston committed a pass interference on Aaron Kelly in the end zone, who looked to have him beat. Seen that happen before. Shockley looked good (trying to be as objective as possible, but that was pretty obvious). Thomas Brown saw a lot of playing time throughout the entire game, never saw Jason Snelling once, maybe I missed him. Chevis Jackson seems to working in the slot again, with Grimes and Houston starting corners. Eric Weems came down with a nice over the head catch to stay in bounds and move the chains. In the red zone, DJ had to wait on Aaron Kelly running a deep out in the end zone. Kelly ran an ugly route and may could’ve been open. The offense had a four wide look and the defense brought serious pressure, but DJ picked up the blitz really well with a nicely thrown ball to Chandler Williams. There’s a gap here for some reason, maybe that had a turnover on downs, but the first team offense came in with Redman leading the team. Jerious Norwood got a lot of gives and looked good and fast. Nice pass and catch to Robert Ferguson, who looked pretty fast and caught everything thrown to him. Well thrown pass and catch by Troy Bergeron who fought off defenders to make a 15 yard gain. Fake handoff reverse to Ferguson who showed really good speed on the outside. Made it inside the red zone. Next play Redman was flushed out of the pocket and found Hartsock in the end zone for a touchdown, probably would’ve been a sack in a real game.
Last Possession
John Parker Wilson led the team down the field on the last drive, having some up and down moments as expected by a rookie QB. Nice pass to Keith Zinger (TE) down the middle of the field and dropped it, confirming the knock on him last year. JPW led the team down the field again towards the end zone. One of the last plays saw Parker Wilson looking for a receiver and Brent Grimes made an unbelievable play to make the interception and killed the drive that ended the scrimmage.
Final Impressions
Overall it was a great experience as a Falcon fan to get up close and see what our team looks like. It was a chance to bring the entire family and quench a little bit of our football appetite before the real deal starts in about a month. Kudos to the Atlanta Falcons organization for giving the fans a chance to see the team, all for free.
Even though I had my doubts, Brent Grimes looks to be quickly locking up the open cornerback job opposite Chris Houston. The guy just makes plays that he shouldn’t be making with his frame. We’ll wait until the preseason games, but if its anything like his current work, he’ll be starting.
DJ Shockley looked good in action. He had a good command of the offense and the huddle. He picked up the blitzes well and showed his nice mobility, arm strength, and improved accuracy. In my opinion, John Parker Wilson looked pretty good as a rookie QB facing a 1st team defense. He certainly showed he can handle 3rd backup duty and be a project for the future. Chris Redman earns over 4 million a year as a backup, so this is definitely a battle to watch.
The offense looked good, crisp, and in tune even without Roddy White. Obviously you can only glean so much with no pads, but the passing game looked good. Matt Ryan made good decisions and threw the ball really well. The injury of Harry Douglas and Roddy White’s holdout has seemed to create a good chemistry with Ryan and Michael Jenkins. They were running against the second team defense, so take from it what you will.
Again, playing defense in only helmets will only tell so much, but as a whole the defense certainly looked shaky. Shockley looked really good against the defense and even John Parker Wilson had his moments. Pass rush seemed non-existent. DeCoud and Coleman look to be forming a good chemistry in the D-backfield, but the secondary got dinked and dunked down the field. Let’s hope it was due to wearing no pads.
Jason Snelling may have been injuried, but Thomas Brown appeared quick and fast in the time he saw on the field. Brown had good cuts, some solid runs, and caught the ball well out of the backfield against the first team defense. Good chance that the Falcons carry Brown AND Snelling, but Brown took advantage of the time he received.
Missing in action again were the usual suspects, Trey Lewis and Peria Jerry. Jerry may have seen some work on the second team defense, but not on the first. Thomas Johnson and Jason Jefferson split time as the other defensive tackle beside Babineaux. It may be overblown, but how could our first round draft pick not beat out Johnson or Jefferson. The LB corps looked athletic with Peterson and Nicholas, but still missing Lofton who has a hamstring issue, which is certainly troublesome.
The wide receiver battle is intense and will require some hard decisions very soon. Looks like the veterans have the inside track at the roster spots. Aaron Kelly obviously has talent, but his routes didn’t look crisp as would be expected. Darren Mougey has great size and speed, but can’t seem to get open. Eric Weems made several nice catches and showed why he was moved up to the active roster last year. Chandler Williams also had some nice catch and runs as well. Troy Bergeron had the best day in my opinion, running good routes, making nice catches, and playing well in the slot. Bergeron saw a lot of action on the first team offense and made the most of it. Robert Ferguson showed flashes as well making good catches as showing surprising speed. Marty Booker wasn’t active, but with the signing of Roddy White the field looks to be stocked again and the competition will be fierce. There looks to be some tough decisions on the horizon concerning the backup wideout spots. They may now want to carry six WR’s.

D3, excellent wrap up on the scrimmage. I am going to drop some opinions. Feel free to hit me up tomorrow.
1) Jerry will be Babs back up this season while he is learning the defense and adjusting to the NFL. The way I see it is Babs and Lewis start with Jerry and Walker backing up. The DT battle will come between Johnson and Jefferson for the 5th DT, if they carry 5.
2) you are tracking with me at WR. I see Bergeron as having the inside track for the slot WR vacated by the injured HD. That is a position I think he could flourish in because of his experience in the Arena League. Looking at WR, I am inclined to go with RW, MJ, Finn, Bergeron, Weems. The last spot is for Fergurson saying that he fights off the young guys. I may be solo here in thinking that Kelly has went from one of the most hyped undrafted rookies to being non factor. Would not be surprised to see him in the first round of cuts.
3) is Tony Gilbert manning the MLB why Lofton is out? If Peterson is, it gives James, Adkins, Winborn, and Wire chances to earn a spot on the team. If James is the real deal as alot of you say, he could prove a lock for the team by taking advantage of PT why Lofton is sidelined.
4) The last point is on backup QB. I posted this thought on your last blog, and I will repost briefly. If DJ and JPW both looked as good as you say, Redman will be cut before the season opener. The $4 Mil he is making is quite alot of money. Even more now when you factor in the extention RW just signed. If you are looking for a spot to save money, this is that spot; as long as DJ keeps up the good work.
Thanks for the continued good work, and for the dedication. You have inspired alot of fans with reason and purpose to root for this team. I know it’s challenging when you think about your family (’lil WR), your full time job, and just daily life itself. Enough cannot be said for the remarkable job you do to keep us updated and informed on the team, and also to keep the Falcon Passion at an all-time high as we approach this season. Thanks again. Later.

Nice job, D3
Glad everyone that attended the two events over the weekend had nice Falcon experiences.
On the Roddy White signing:
His deal confirms the idea the Falcons think of him as a top 5 elite, WR in the league, contrary to opinions expresses by more than a few here, Ken Strickland`s argument has proven to be one of the most correct in assessing the value of Roddy to the team.
Dimitroff said, he was working a firm and fair deal for both Roddy and the Falcons and he did it.
That should answer the question about his relative worth to the Falcons, no spinning it now, as it`s in black and white.

I certainly thought that old Abe was going to be the only Falcon I jump on this season. I thought everybody else on the team made their best efforts. I focused all my speeches, blog-entries, attention on Ms. Abe…And here comes Roddy White.
Is six years for fifty-million dollars (with eighteen million upfront) worth it? It was before his selfish holdout. Who knows (but TD), he could have appeared at camp, shown some flashes of last year and make MORE than 6 for 50. It happened for Jenkins; it happened for Babs. White’s impatience not only disrupted team chemistry, it excuses six days of preparation for a pro-bowl wide receiver. For the first time in over a decade, we stand the chance to send five offensive players to the pro-bowl this season. Why disturb that? You (Roddy) have disregarded the true definition of the word “team”. I don’t want to hear this “do-what-I-got-to-do; this is a business” BS. What about the team? You demonstrated more loyalty to Michael Vick than you did to your current team. And since I’m mentioning your “current family”, let me remind you of something. You are only as good as your last touchdown. Nobody cares about what you accomplished in college; nobody cares about what you did last year; I can’t even remember your numbers in the pro-bowl. Your only accomplishments that seem to be circulating around here is your dropped passes. Your past, negative or positive, is forgotten when, or if, you catch your next touchdown. Let’s hope that in two or three years from now, you’re not going to hold out for money that matches.
There may be some fans that are willing to forget this episode, after your signing yesterday but I’m certainly not going to forget it. You didn’t forget what “they” did to Michael Vick; and I (for one) am not going to let you forget what you did to this team. I certainly hope you’re prepared to hear from me.
Your newest fan

D3,
Another great post. It has become the norm.
Some thoughts on our D-Line. From Tackle to Tackle, we have one of the very best O-Lines in the NFL. Throw into the mix T Gonzalez, who is known around the league for his blocking ability, and we are scarey good. This is year two in the O-Line continuity and will only get better. Our D-Line goes head to head with this formidable line on a daily basis. There may be no percieved progress with our D-Line, but when we play other NFL teams that are not so nicely stacked, we as fans are going to be impressed…Just a thought.

What’s up Cage!! I see that the CEO is off and running early with another excellent analysis.
RW take. As most of the Cage family knows, I have been consistent in my “Reggie Wayne” comparsions when it comes to RW. But last night, after my man UnCa Bob (Semper Fi my brother) broke the news of the deal, like the CEO, I did some soul searching.
I’m going to shift my position on RW a little so follow me here. RW was taken in the FIRST round of the 2005 draft. We expect our FIRST round picks to come in and make impacts over the tenure of their first deal. RW came in, disgruntled at the start, but once on the field, he began to show some flash. Oh, yes at times, he had the hands of Swiss cheese. I will come back to why in a few. But he, on occasion showed promise.
Why was he (RW) not consistent? Instability at the most critical position on the field. Let keep it real Cage. Jim Mora Jr and Gregg Knapp could not get the former team leader to make the adjustments needed to transition in the role of a quality NFL QB. Stop right now..I know I will hear all the points about him being different, special, unique, etc. But the QB position did nothing in the first two years of the RW era to showcase this man’s abilities. Hell, Jenkins was the number one receiver in ‘06 with seven TDs but that was only after the QB was “forced” to pass more by Coach Greg Knapp. The QB’s frustration, a stupid set of talk show interviews by the coach, and AB’s spending too much time out of the owner’s box and at the side of his QB, would lead to January 2007. Mora was fired and our own Hell week, an extended version, began.
The case unfolded. I’ll leave that there. With Redman and Harrington in 2007, Hue Jackson, a former receivers coach, got to RW. He coached him up, instilled some pointers on work ethic, and held them, ALL of them, accountable. With JOURNEYMAN talent at QB and behind a line that was supposedly the WORST in Falcons history, all of a sudden, a star was born. This freak occurrence was taken to another level when in 2008, Coach Robiskie intensified the rigorous demands on his receiving corps, a quality OC took charge of a young QB, a QUALITY OL coach turned the worst into the envy of the league, and we went back to a balanced attack.
In many ways, RW owes his new found lease on stardom and life to the events of the last almost three years. Had they not taken place, he would be on his way out of ATL. We would be debating his bust potential just like we are doing right now with Jamaal Anderson. Hell, a few of us are already whispering concerns about the Jerry selection.
Enough on RW…he has his deal and he is in camp. But if he is the friend he said so famously showed the world he was was to a certain former player, he may want to show some love, write out a nice check from his signing bonus, and send the brother a cut of this pie. For if it was not for the misfortunes of the brother, his former QB, his friend, RW would not have had his big day on Saturday.

Ken stricklands argument was not correct. He was making a case for why white should be paid larry fitzgerald money. White did not get larry fitzgerald money. Most bloggers here, myself included, thought that white was most deserving of a new contract but didn’t deserve to be paid like larry. According to adam schefter of NFL network white’s contract is for 6 years at a little more than 8 million per season with 18.6 million gauranteed. Thats a fair deal for both white and the falcons and I think about what most here thought white deserved. In fact I specifically remember having conversations on this blog where the number of 7 to 8 million per season was thrown around as being fair compensation. The 18.6 in gaurantee’s is also fair as it pays white for good production but is not the 20 million plus signing bonus that some of the super elite players receive. A fair deal which is what most bloggers here wanted all along.

Is it really a stretch for you to recognize that the falcons have a great OL? Let’s see, we drafted one of the top OL last yr. and finished 2nd in rushing yards. This yr. we added a hof TE, whose known as a great blocker. I don’t know mitch, but I think it’s pretty safe to conclude that we have a great OL.

We’ve upgraded every position of weakness from last yrs team, especially on DEF. We’ve upgraded DE, DT, OLB, SS and TE positions, as well as added quality depth at every position except FB. Yet, so called experts, and fans that claim to be football literate, project we’ll win no more than 4 to 10 games. If you took this yrs Falcon roster, along with last yrs achievements, and named the team Steelers, Cowboys or Patriots, instead of Falcons, people would consider us Superbowl contenders.
Last yr if we’d lost WR HDouglas, or any one of our top draft picks, we would’ve been in big trouble. This yr, their isn’t a single draft pick that can’t be replaced by a equally talented player. This yrs team is built to last for the duration of the season no matter what. I LOVE THIS TEAM!!!!

DJ did his time as backup @ GA and had a great senior year, now looks like he has studied and learned at pro level to come in and help out Ryan. Thomas Brown will be a great back up, glad to see he’s coming back strong from injury. Tony Gilbert stepping up and showing he’s ready to play. Just goes to show that UGA has a great tradition of getting guys ready for the pro level. GO FALCONS, GO DAWGS, and Keep up the great work D3!!!!!!!

A few points of thought..
First, the receivers. RW and MJ are locks no question there. I think that Fin is due to his reliability in clutch situations. Weems will share punt/kickoff returns with Thomas Brown so he makes the cut. I know that several of my Cage brothers feel strongly about Bergeron but I think he will lose out to the experience and versatility of Fergie. Fergie has experience on the flank as well as in the slot. He was a solid #2 slot receiver (paired with Driver and Freeman) while with the Pack a few years back. He will hold down a slot given that experience and a rather low cap hit.
Second..the QB situation. The next three weeks will be telling in that regards. Redman is not done yet and I cite the experience facet as my key arguement. DJ and JPW show promise but in the NFL, the keys to the store have be entrusted to someone that can handle it. So DJ and JPW have got to seriously “open” some eyes during the preseason. Right now I give the edge to DJ as the #3 QB.
Third. DTs. Babs and Jerry are locks though I’m going to be watching Jerry closely. Lewis, I think, is going to be released due to the knee. It appears that this is going to be an ongoing issue with him. Walker is going to end up playing major minutes this season based on what I have heard to date. Like Jerry, I will be watching him closely. The last DT slot will go to Jefferson given his consistent play as a backup. He will share that rotation with Anderson as I feel his future will be at the DT position if Sid and Coy prove to be what we think they are.

2 guys, I’m feeling your points. But I just wonder why a 9-7 season and the continuation of the Process’ evolution is considered a major letdown for the Falcons by so many.
I’m one of those that does not see 10 wins this season and I am willing to take my heat for it. And trust me, no one loves my Falcons more than
me! But this is a VERY yet talented team. Smitty and his staff will be aggressive in bringing them along. But a winning season and a run at the playoffs late into the season is definately a MAJOR achievement if you look at the complete package that is the history of the Falcons.

Hey Seminole — I haven’t heard that Lewis is having trouble with his knee – can you elaborate? I’ve always thought the keys to the DLine would be the health of Lewis and Jamaal stepping up.
I hate Moore missing all this time. Is the battle for the forth safety between Harris and Fudge – and do they figure Hutchins can swing between CB and S?

Sure Rainman, he has had some swelling in his surgically repaired knee. So it will be interesting to see if he can hold up to the rigors. I too want to see Moore in the mix. He and DeCoud could be a hell of pair long term.
I think Hutch will be a backup CB and special team player. It is going to be hard to move ahead of what Grimes and Owens seem to be cooking. The preseason will be most telling my brother.

SW, I am seeing 6 WRs, thus Begeron making the team. You may be right about Lewis with his ongoing knee injuries. Walker could very well end up starting oppisite Babs. I still think Jerry will be backing up Babs. They seem to be alot alike. Jerry will back up while learning the defense. I know about his age, but age is not experience. You are also right in your opinion of JAnderson moving to DT permanently. It could happen. If it does it will be because of Bierrman and Sid, and how they perform. If that happens, ATL will go back into the draft looking for another hybrid OLB/DE. I will stand by what I have been saying in that Abe will not be in ATL when his contract is up.
That was a good point on how RW develop[ed his first 2 years in the league. A for gotten point, when RW holdout was front and centered. With stability at the QB spot, who knows if RW wouldn’t have taken off sooner. As far as rhe backup QB, how long do you have to be in the NFL to get playing time? How many oppurtunities does the third QB get to perform? Redman will be cut right before the season opener, and DJ will be #2. DJ has sat and learned the playbook, as well as the NFL. 3 years, right? $4 mil is alot to pay a back up, even at QB (experienced be damned). The signing of RW to his extension, and the pending status of our OL, and Norwood will do alot to dictate where money will be continued to be spent this year as well as next. I say, if you are looking for somewhere to save some money and create cap room. Back up QB is that spot.

You may be right about Redman but I just think that he will restructure his deal in order to remain on the team and provide some cap relief. Hutch will be here this season given the versatility we both see in him. One thing is proven; the Patriot Way requires that backups be ready to step in and make an impact immediately. We have four games upcoming to see if DJ or JPW is that man.

SeminoleWarrior, I f Redman restructures, I can see him staying, because you would want the most experienced man for the job. As I see it, when you add Redman’s salary to his experience, DJ comes out on top when you add his salary to his upside. I don’t think Redman experience is worth what he his being paid. He is being paid mid level starters money to ride the bench.

falcon21, When you look at our team as constructed. Where could we cut to create salary cap room? We have like 3 OL and Norwood up for FA nextyear. We just signed RW to an extension (that will use up some cap space), and we will have to make a decision on Abe. Where can we create space. We are relatively young at all positions. Back up QB is the first spot I can think of. DJ has earned his time. He has been patient as he had at UGA.

JJ–I can think of three ways to evaluate athletes or teams. One might base his judgment on previous performance. That’s how you and Unca’ Bob, presumably, are evaluating the new tight end and our offensive line, and using that method is why we were surprised at Roddy White’s play two years ago after below average performance his first two years, and why we were not surprised at his performance last year because of his outstanding play the year prior. Is it a good method? Decide for yourself, but don’t ignore the many failures in players drafted high in baseball, basketball and football who fail miserably, or players who seem to lose everything after some successful years; does a recent Braves outfielder come to mind? And don’t ignore the great success of those drafted low or the many college walk-ons, so called, who turn out to be great players.
Another way is to do it by watching the athlete play in a variety of situations a great deal. The emphasis in the previous sentence is on “a variety of situations” and “a great deal.” An example of this kind of evaluation might be to watch a basketball player handle the ball, shoot, play defense, etc. If he does it in an adept manner, we might decide he is a good player. The emphasis in this method is in the skill with which the player accomplishes the tasks of the sport. The grounds for the claim are based on direct observation of his performance in the task in question, in this case, basketball. I believe an evaluation based on this method requires prolonged observation in a wide variety of situations, and it’s likely that few are around long enough to make such observations. Of course, the athlete’s coach comes to mind, or his manager or teammate, or even a sports writer provided the latter may get close enough to the action to have a good view. A personal note: I went to a large high school in Florida many years ago, and I made first string on the basketball team my first year, couldn’t hold the position, and was demoted to second and third string my remaining years. A close friend remarked to me once, “Mitch, I’ve never seen anybody as good in practice and as bad in a game as you are.” I replied, “I know.” Get it? I was a good practice player but not a good game player. One other personal observation: I was a very good baseball catcher when I was young, and I insisted even at a young age on controlling pitch selection and the deployment of my teammates in their defensive positions, and did. That is, when I was the catcher, I controlled my team. It was not unusual to hear from my girlfriend or mother, for example, and at times even the manager/coach remarks that had little to do with the game but were putatively about the game. I remember saying to the manager one time, “Are you talking about the game we just played?” My point is that even the kind of observation I am describing is problematical unless one is very close to the action, though, to be sure, if you watch very closely and know what to look for you can get a pretty good idea of why a pitcher in a given televised major league baseball game is being effective. It’s the center field camera that does the trick. But you have to pay very close attention and keep track of pitch selection. Even then, it is hard to make dependable judgments on whether pitches are high or low, and also whether a looping breaking ball catches the corner of the plate or goes around it. But if you watch closely, you might get a good idea of what a pitcher is trying to do, and how effectively he is doing it. You can’t do it if you’re sitting along the third base line and watching the girls.
The third method is relational–does this basketball player beat his guard, does this basketball team beat its opponent, does this defensive end break through his blocker more often than not, does this offensive line handle the defense, does this passer complete more passes than another, does this team win more games than others. This is the best of the three methods when discussing teams or large units of teams, like offensive lines, provided that the judgment is made across a good number of games. It is not so good in evaluating, say, quarterbacks because one might produce a great record but never win a championship. Critics are apt to use the latter fact against him even though he might have always been on a poor team. In my view, such criticism is a confused mixing of categories and of how value claims are made for our categories. A similar situation is also the problem with arguments by unbeaten college football teams from the lower classifications that they should be rated higher than one-loss teams from a higher classification. It is a mixing of categories. According to this method, the best college team next year will be the one in the highest classification that beats the most opponents and wins the championship game. The question, “But is it really the best team?” is incompetent.
I’ve said enough, and I hope, JJ, that you have the perspicacity to see that I’ve answered your question, and the choice I had in my response to Unca’ Bob’s blog entry: I could respond as I did or, alternatively, I could have hooted at him. The former was more respectful, and as you can see, it is the one I chose.

Jason, that mid level starters cash was an insurance policy while we did our due diligence in finding a QB for the future. Had it not been for the arrival of TD and the drafting of Matty Ice, Redman would have been the starter. Though we are a running team by nature, we have to have capability at the QB position to ensure our balanced attack. I do not see where many other clubs will be willing to give Redman a big pay day. Not disrespect but I but I don’t see them lining up to take any of our backup QBs off our hands.

Unca’Bob, Tiger is only 3 back so if he is on his game he will probably win. As far as Nascar, I hate the Glen but I will be watching!!! You didn’t have him listed with the 1st team either, so was he just getting limited PT or just not worth reporting? By your reports you seem to concur with me that Thomas Johnson has a good chance of making this squad. Am I putting words in your mouth or is that the way you see it as well? Thanks for the good work. I think it’s great that you’ve been given this opportunity. You continue to demonstrate this was a good decision on the part of AJC, DOWho?

SeminoleWarrior, I agree. That’s why I feel Redman will be gone as soon as TD feels DJ is ready. The past two years having Redman was ok. With the transistion of MV to MR, but now we are stable at the QB position. We don’t need to keep Redman on the roster taking up alot of cap room with his $4mil salary sitting on the bench.

Unca’ Bob, its in the Big chance for young receivers blog. The one where he was making charges of “cultural bias” against anyone who was upset that white was holding out. Is that a code word for racist? The vast majority of fans on here thought white deserved a new contract but thought he handled it the wrong way. So I think ken strickland should explain what he meant by that accusation.

It’s been said more than a few times that Atlanta Falcon fans are some of the dumbest around, and some of the comments concerning RWhite suggest theirs some validity to the comment. For some reason certain fans can’t prevent their personal, emotional and/or cultural feelings and attitudes from interfering with any form of logic and common sense.
So in the interest of upgrading their low or limited football IQ’s, I’ll offer an example of what one comes up with when one uses common sense and logic, as opposed to emotional, personal and/or cultural ignorance. CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:
Some of the negative comments have suggested that RWhite isn’t in the same category as WR’s like LFitzgerald, JBolden. Now, let’s compare the systems these players functioned in that allowed them to achieve their stats and compare it to the system RWhite functioned under.
(1) Arizona was the NFL’s #2 ranked passing OFF, behind New Orleans.
(2) Atlanta was the NFL’s 17th ranked passing OFF, a big disparity.
(3) Altanta was the NFL’s 2nd ranked rushing OFF.
(4) Arizona ranked dead last, a whopping disparity.
The disparity in passing VS rushing attempts between Arizona and the Falcons is mindboggling. Arizona was totally dependant on the pass, while Atlanta had the NFL’s most balanced OFF. Arizona used a 3rd WR instead of a TE, and their 3 top receivers were LFigzgerald(96 rec’s), JBolden(89 rec’s) and SBreaston(77 rec’s). All of their TE’s came off the bench and, but still managed to accumulate almost as many receptions as our TE’s. With that type of receiving and passing power, none of their WR’s received the double and triple teams RWhite received, considering we didn’t have a pass catching TE or use a 3 WR set like they did.
With all of these pass receiving advantages, and the tons more pass receiving opportunities Arizona’s WR’s got, LFitzgerald caught only 6 more passes than RWhite and JBolden only caught 1 more. Now class, what does that tell you? Well, it should tell you the following:
(1) That if either LFitzgerald or JBolden played in Atlanta’s far less pass happy OFF system, they’d be far less productive than RWhite.
(2) If RWhite played in Arizona’s pass happy OFF system, he’d be far more productive than either of them.
And when you consider how productive RWhite was under the fiasco that was RPetrino, with the multiple OB’s and all of the distractions, you have to ask yourself if LFitzgerald and JBolden are in RWhite’s category. CLASS OVER PEOPLE. LET’S SEE IF YOU’VE LEARNED ANYTHING.
That first paragraph was completely uncalled for in my opinion. LTF

Just because someone doesn’t rank a receiver the same way you do ken doesn’t mean they are stupid or have negative cultural feelings and attitudes (whatever the hell that supposed to mean). I like roddy and am very satisfied with the contract so glad to see the situation put to rest. But one major thing that you didn’t address that could be a valid argument is the lack of touchdown catches. White best is only 7 touchdowns and moss had 23 and 17 the last two seasons respectively. So some might rank moss higher than white because they put a high value on scoring. Hell some people who have played fantasy for a long time value players based on fantasy points. Everbody has different criteria for ranking players and can make an good argument to back up their point of view. You can’t attack folks and make accusations about their character just because they don’t share the same opinion as you.

Hey Fellow Cagers! Boy, its been one of those streaks the last couple of days. Murphy’s Law in full effect. I’ve had my computer the entire summer and have had no problems whatsoever, but the day before kids come back to school and I get the nastiest computer virus you’ve ever seen. I’ve been trying to get rid of it for like 5 hours now to no avail. If you ever come across the spyware called Advanced Virus Remover, be very afraid. It basically scares you into thinking that you’re computer is about to crash, but it isn’t. Anyway its a nasty thing that has gripped my computer. And of course everything I need for the start of school is in the computer.
Anyway, maybe a little too much info, but just wanted to let you all know that I will likely be out of commission until this is resolved. I usually am able to get rid of these things but this is the worst I’ve seen. The responses and posts in the Bird Cage likely will be put on hold for a while. Who knows how long, but keep the Bird Cage rockin’ as you always do and cross your fingers and toes that this little s—- virus will be resolved.
I’ll try to pop in every once in a while, but fixing this is priority one. Have a good week and hopefully I’ll be back live shortly.

Unca’ Bob, the chip out into the fairway is what undid harrington. Instead of taking his medicine and laying way back like woods did, he tried to get greedy and take it to far down the fairway which led to him being back into the ruff just above the lip of the bunker. He left himself a terrible 3rd shot and it cost him the tournament. Anyone who plays golf knows that the temptation to pull of the great shot instead of taking the medicine is sometimes hard to overcome. And today it cost harrington big time.

LONG TIME FALCON FAN-First, I’ve never made any reference to RWhite deserving as much money as LFitzgerald. In fact, I’ve never referenced money in any way in regard to RWhite, LFitzgerald or his holdout.
Secondly, my August 7, 11:48an post wasn’t directed at everyone that differs with me on RWhites value. My comments targeted those who keep saying he wasn’t in the same category as LFitzgerald or JBolden, or even CJohnson. When an OFF ranks #2 in passing and dead last in rushing, and feature standard 3-4 receiver sets, its obvious Fitzgerald and Bolden played in a system that’s totally dependent upon the pass. Therefore, they naturally got far more opportunities to pad their overall receiving stats than RWhite, who plays in a far more balanced OFF that ranked #2 in rushing and #14 in passing. RWhite had to beat double and triple teams because he didn’t have a 3rd WR or a receiving TE to prevent it from happening,
Yet, the overall stattistical difference between RWhite and LFitzgerald and JBolden just doesn’t suggest either WR is in a league apart from him. According to the overall stats over the last 2yrs, it would strongly suggest that neither WR could match RWhite’s production if they played in a less pass dependent system, like he has. How much a team values a WR and how much they’re willing to pay does depend on a number of variables.
But this isn’t a matter of who’s more valuable to his respective team isn’t the issue. The issue is whether RWhite is in the same category as LFitzgerald or JBolden. And according to the simularity in overall production of the 3 players over the last 2yrs, and the overwhelming advantages both Bolden and Fitzgerald have had over Roddy as far as receiving opportunitis, RWhite is as good or better as either of them.
I’ve asked anyone who differs with me to give some valid reasons for their position, other than personal opinions and assumptions.

Unca Bob,
I noticed your post at about 9:00 AM this morning speaking of the Falcons O-line (how good they are)and seeming lack of progress from the D-line.
Made a similar comment yesterday and mentioned a wait and see approach against jerseys that are not red and black in an evaluating the D-lines progress.
That said, safe to say, after one week of camp, I am real happy with the apparent progress of the secondary.
Brent Grimes and Thomas DeCloud playing at a high level ratchets up my confidence level for the entire group.
JMHO but I think it`s best for veterans to play well and force highly touted rookie to learn and play their way into the lineup.
That same principal applies to the D-line where some have seemed to written Trey Lewis off, not so fast, my friends.
The last I heard the spot next to Babs is still wide open for grabs.
On the Falcons LB`s, they are deeper, faster and more aggressive than pundits who are not closely monitoring the situation would have you believe.
All for now.

Ken, I still believe Fitzgerald is at another level regardless of what statistics say. Forget about the statistics when Fitz can go up against any defender in the league, make that two defenders, and still come down with the ball. Larry is just a special talent and although white is a very good receiver, he’s not at the same level. Based on stats tom brady would not measure up to peyton manning but most would take brady over manning any day. And if white were really as talented as Fitzgerald he would have gotten the same money or more but he did’nt.

BT,
I truely beleive football begins and ends with line play. Always have, always will. Having said that, from last years play alone, I do feel we have a very, very good O-Line. And I feel time will bare this out. My only point earlier was to try to show, that just because our D-Line can not out play our O-Line at this time, is not a bad thing. IMHO, we have a top five O-Line. Our D-Line can do nothing but improve playing on a daily basis against one of the best. Where fans will notice the improved play will be against Teams that have weakness and it will be exposed. When our Bye-week has passed, we will have a defensive package to behold.

I’ve even typed in on line to ask things like,Best in NFC south, or Who’s goin to the play offs 2009-10 and a lot other things about our team and confrence.I am very impressd with the total outcome of what most have siad .I think the falcons will be maybe in the top 5 O’S this year and there going o do well over all ofcorse less injury’s.I don’t yet know about the young ,D, But I like what you’ve said .I’m realy lookin forword to this year’s games even the one’s they lose are probably gona be real good games ……………Thanks

BT, if that is true then JA98 is on his way out of Atlanta. Mike Smith don’t give a crap about where he was drafted as he will play the best players. Smith is dead serious about Davis being given a chance to win that starting defensive position over JA98. If Davis does in fact beat out JA98 and sidbury comes on strong then I could see Atlanta cutting JA98 after the season. No reason to pay a backup that kind of money when they can bring in a cheaper alternative. He could definently end up being a salary cap casualty.

LTF, JA98 is either going to play DT or you are correct, he is on his way out of town. The sand has nearly cleared that hourglass.
Hi CBrass..So you were scouting TD in addition to the game as well huh? LOL…

BT, Lewis has everyone on pins and needles because it appears that there will be nagging issues with the knee. Setback after setback. 325 pounds and an aggressive scheme do not bode well for the brother. I wish him the best but I have to think that he is playing possibly on borrowed time.

Great Sunday Evening Cage Brothers and Sisters! Hope everyone had a good weekend as we’re only 5 days away from our 1st Pre-season game against Stafford and Lions. Car and computer fixed and ready to go.
jason – Thomas Johnson looked good at the DT spot, better than Jefferson from what I could tell. Bergeron looked good in the slot, better than Williams or Weems, IMO.
Joe’s place – Think the deal was pretty fair on both sides. Glad Roddy’s a Falcon for life.
BT – Thanks for props. Hate the holdout had to happen at all, but one week is not that bad when you compare it to others. Roddy’s a Falcon for life and that’s all that matters.
Stirg – Is Roddy your new Abe? How’d your concerts go? Getting ready to see our Birds up in MI?
Unca’ Bob – Thanks. Our O-Line looked good to great, without pads; but still looked tough and didn’t sub once. Our DL looked pretty shaky, but thats a good point about their potential. Your boy Garrett Reynolds held his own.
JJ – Thanks for helping me take a chill pill last night. Good friend my man.
Seminole – You called it close all along, and I’ll have to say I was fairly close as well with saying be between 7 and 8 mill. Like your logic on how Roddy’s star rose.
mitch – Our OL looked really good on saturday. Our DL did not.
long time falcon – Looks like it was a fair deal on both sides. I guess they count the guaranteed money as the indicator, because he will make less yearly than Fitzgerald, Moss, Evans, and Jennings.
mountain_jim – Thanks for the props. It was a lot of fun, and Bergeron looked really natural in the slot. He made a lot of tough catches and ran good routes.
kneivel – Our boys DJ and TBrown looked good, trying to be as objective as possible. DJ particularly looked really fluid and drove at will against the first team DEF.
Seminole(2) – Gotta disagree with you my brother. I thought Bergeron looked much better than Weems; although Weems did make some nice catches. Weems didn’t do much for me as a punt returner; which will be a moot point if Grimes looks like he did saturday. Also disagree with you on DJ at #2 as well. No knock on Redman, but that 4 mill a year as a backup is a lot with all we need to re-up (Clabo and Dahl). Redman may be more experienced, but lets admit that Redman or Shockley as our #1 would significantly reduce our chances. Shockley looked better against the 1st team DEF than Redman did against the 2nd team DEF, IMO.
More in a bit……….

D3, you have been busy my brother and the bells will be ringing in force tomorrow, right. Great job as always.
The WR competition will run its course over the next three weeks or so. I will agree with you that after MR, the QB play definately does drop off. That too will be a definately battle.
The money needed to re-sign the OL is going to come from the release of the Predator I am afraid. With 12 years on his tires and his injury tendency, coupled with his desire for a new deal, will make him a cap casualty next season. Biermann will be his replacement with Sidbury adding depth.
Grimes and Owens will be one hell of a battle for the CB position. I still think that in either case, Houston had better step it up. He too is in the last year of his deal and given the aggression shown by both Grimes and Owens, he may be allowed to move on as well.
Thomas Brown definately looked impressive to me. He has a serious hard running style and I like that. He is faster than I thought also. I will be watching him closely all preseason. Sarah, he is a legit threat to our man, Jason Snelling.
