Once Bright Star
One of the gaping holes left wide open by the departure of Michael Boley in free-agency was a big need at the strong-side linebacker position. Boley seemingly had a coming out year and was one of the few bright spots of the controversial and divisive year of 2007, having close to a Pro-Bowl worthy year after being drafted in the fifth round. Boley combined for 109 total tackles, 3 sacks, 7 pass defenses, and 2 interceptions. Many thought Boley would be the perfect candidate to build a young, new defense around.
Not in Accord
That scenario certainly turned out not to be the case when Dimitroff and Smith started their new regime in Atlanta. The promising young linebacker pulled one of the better disappearing acts in recent memory. He had a sub-par to terrible year that saw him getting benched in favor of journeyman Coy Wire as the season wore on. No one knows exactly what happened and both sides remained professional and never spoke of trouble, but it can be assumed that the two sides weren’t aligned. No player ran to free-agency quicker than Boley, which seemed all too fine with the new bosses. Michael Boley signed with the New York Giants for 5 yrs and $25 million, getting the fresh start and big contract he obviously desired.
Nicholas’ Chance
Every departure creates an opportunity for a player ready and hungry to take over a starting spot in the NFL. The position looks primed for Stephen Nicholas to seize the chance put before him. Drafted by Bolt Petrino in the 4th round, Nicholas came in with monster stats out of Central Florida (He finished his college career with 326 tackles, 20 sacks, and a school record 53.5 tackles for loss) and great physical skill set (6′3, 230, 4.64 40-time, 29 x 225). He was known as a fierce hitter and superb pass rusher coming into the draft. Playing in 13 games throughout his rookie year and all 16 games last year mainly on special teams, Nicholas was backlogged behind mainstays Boley and Brooking and saw action only sparingly last year in a backup role. Nicholas had a big chance to grab a starter’s job last year when Boley fell out of favor and disappeared from his once hopeful outlook, but the coaches went in favor of Wire.
Tough Season
Coach Smith’s new command showed that, regardless of name or draft status, the best player will play. That was the case when Coy Wire jumped up and stole playing time from Boley, eventually grabbing hold of the his starter’s spot for good, leapfrogging Nicholas in the process. This off-season it was revealed that Nicholas had the weight of the world on his shoulders dealing with health issues of his young son needing a heart transplant. We get wrapped up in football and players so much, but a reality check on what’s truly important is needed in the sports world sometimes. With the help and support of his teammates, coaches, and owner, Nicholas’ son is doing well. How could anyone come to work and concentrate on the job at hand with those concerns? Nicholas somehow did it though, still totaling 20 tackles, 1 sack, and 2 pass defenses. .
Ready to Shine
Through an off-season of hard work, perseverance, and sheer will, Nicholas seems primed to have a breakout year and be solid new cog in Atlanta’s new look defense built on speed and ferocity, lining up with the first team defense at mini-camp and OTA’s. It indeed would add to an already momentous story of resolve and purpose.
Lost in all the shuffle of Boley exiting and Nicholas looking to take over one of the outside linebacker positions is Coy Wire. The relatively unknown OLB came out of nowhere to take playing time away from Michael Boley, and eventually grasping the starting position outright. Wire showed an extremely productive knack for supporting the run and sacrificing his body for a vicious hit. After taking over later in the season, Wire had a fairly prolific year collaring 34 tackles and 1 pass defense. More than any other player, Wire exhibited the new regime’s mentality that the best player will play, regardless of who you are and how well known you are. Before starting his stint in Atlanta, Wire is a journeyman who started 15 games in 2002 with the Buffalo Bills, but has played sparingly since. A look at Wire’s career stats:
Tackles – 219, Sacks – 5, Pass Defenses – 4,
A Roster Spot Lock?
Even though he was serviceable as a backup and eventual starter last year, Wire is over 30 years old and doesn’t fall in line with the process towards younger, faster, and more versatile players. Although very stout against the run, Wire seems to have been a liability in pass coverage, not showing the versatility that Van Gorder and Smith seek. Wire has one of the most intense and best off-season work ethics of any Falcons player, and maybe that will translate this year. The coaching staff seems to be leaning towards giving Nicholas every opportunity to seize the position. Wire seemed all but assured of a roster spot with his well known ability as a special teams ace, but then the Falcons signed Jamie Winborn who is the same age and fits the same mold as Wire, so maybe his seat just got a little warmer. But as evidenced last year, he will be ready, willing, and able to take over if Nicholas falters as a starter. He’s done it before.
Discussion Framework:
1) Is Nicholas ready to have a breakout year?
2) Does Stephen Nicholas give you hope or doubt about the new-look LB corps?
3) Does Wire’s age and relative anonymity bother you at all?
4) Should the Falcons look at current or soon to be free-agents at OLB?

D3, Good evening my man. Here’s my take. Coy Wire did an outstanding job taking over for Boley last year. How much affect would he have playing a 16 game schedule at OLB. Real quick, Wire is a ST demon, known for punishing hits, and sacrificing the body for the tackle. He is best suited for that. Also, provides an insurance blanket if Nicolas proves not ready for Prime Time.
Nicolas, The reason he did not step in for Boley was beacuse of the personal situation he was in with the hconcerns of the health of his son. I think Smitty knew this and did not want to overwhelm Nicoals with a starting spot. Boley was let go because of a difference in philosopphy I think. I also think that Nicolas being ready to assume the position made it easier to let Boley go.

Where is everybody? Asleep like normal human beings, I hope. Anyone who does not know Coy Wire’s story: he suffered a debilitating(?) spinal injury while with Buffalo and was subsequently released. He worked his way back into shape and Dmitroff & Smith gave him a chance last year.
We were all really disappointed that Boley did not work out, for whatever reason. Two years ago he played like a perrenial all-pro and we thought that position would be settled for years. So much for potential. Wonder if it had anything to do with his subsequent legal problems and suspension with the Giants. Remember the hype around the drafting of Nicholas; almost the same as with Sidbury this year. This is his third year as a fourth round pick from another regime, it is make or break time. I hope he succeeds and the defense improves. Everyone worries about the losses of Brooking, Milloy, Jackson, Boley & Foxworth; but I think we rated like 25th out of 32 teams in rush defense and notmmuch better in pass and overall defense. Changes had to be made to improve the defense and I think that the additions through the draft and FA and the additional experience of the younger players such as DeCoud and Jackson in the secondary will improve the defense. Go Birds! A fan EVERY year since 1966!

Since no one else is posting at this hour, I’ll address the other questions. Wire performed adequately, if not spectacularly, when he started. He will not be a star, but neither will he be a liability. The additions of Peterson & Winborn provided needed experience. Bierman, Sidbury and Adkins may play some OLB in certain packages. Sorry, don’t know much about Miles or James. I am not worried about the position; I believe they will perform at least competently on both sides. I’m sure that if, as happens every year, some really talented OLB surprisingly is waived by another team, TD & MS will claim him.

Peter King – MMQ (SI.com):
” I think the six-year, $50-million deal for Roddy White in Atlanta seems fair as long as White, no matter how well he produces in the next four years, doesn’t try to reopen it. The Falcons were willing to play ball with White with a year left on his deal, and the ability (quite likely, because of the looming uncapped year) to make him a restricted free-agent after this season. White had two nothing seasons and then two very good ones. For that, the Falcons should get a bare minimum of four years out of this contract.”

Hold up one minute. My brother finds time to work on the car, repair a computer glitch, train the future WR/TE, spend quality time with the First Lady, and still post, time after time, impressive blogs. And serves as Commish of our league? D3 for Governor!! The man can do it all. Not that I am surprised though. Another fine post by our CEO and brother. How in the hell does he do it consistently like he does. Love the way my brother rolls…
At this time, I’m assuming that the furloughs are done and that he is back in the classroom this morn, engaging the minds of the next generation. If that is not a challenge, I don’t know what is.
D3, my brother, MAJOR PROPS to you for his OUTSTANDING commitment to the family, the Bird Cage, and the Falcon Nation. I’m damned proud to call you my wingman!!
NICHOLAS IS READY!!
Nicholas is ready to make his move. He has all the traits to be a very good one. He is fast, strong, and works incredibly hard. There is NO questioning his loyalty as he managed to somehow give his team focus and effort in the midst of what had to be PURE HELL for him and his wife. His effort did not go unnoticed by Smitty and TD for a reason. Clearly, there is something about this kid that translates into being a class act, a potential warrior on the field, and an even better man. Stephen will perhaps not be an all Pro this season but I’m on record right now, this guys will be a good one for years to come. His metal is not the stuff you find often. I’m in his corner 1000%.

Wire will be retained for depth and his special team work. The LB I want to carefully watch over the preseason is Robert James. The man is a hitting fool!! He is effective in coverage and blitz schemes. He also offers the versatility to play some safety.

The moves made at the linebacking position are a perfect example of TD and smitty trying to create competition to make the position better. Fostering competition forces players to step up their games or else they could be out of job. Just like with JA98, he is no longer just going to be penciled in at DE just because he was the 8th pick. Davis is going to give him all he can handle and he better step it up or he’s going to the bench. Last season TD focused on building the offensive side of the ball so the incumbents on defense were pretty much safe. But this season its game on with the defensive side of the ball. The defensive line and secondary are also going to see heated competition as well. I think that was a big problem with previous regimes, guys came in all relaxed knowing they were going to be penciled in to start. With TD and company these guys better come to trainig camp ready to battle if they want to keep a job. I love this new regime with TD’s eye for talent and smitty’s no nonsense approach they are going to finally make us a long term winner.

D3, the usual great commentary and analytics.
Yes, Nicholas is geared for a breakout season. In fact, I thought he would have a breakout season last year. Hind sight being 20/20, we all now know why last year was a tough one for Stephen. This year is all his and there’s a big tiger in that tank just waiting to pounce on some unsuspecting signal callers.
As far a Coy “Barbed” Wire, if Thomas Brown (who worked with Coy this summer) calls Wire’s off season workout “the hardest ever”, then Coy is our kind of player. I think he is a lock for special teams and a solid veteran backup for our young “D”.
D3, you know that TD is always looking for reinforcements and potential talent so I will confidently let our award winning front office handle that part of it. I do hear there are some good line backers coming in next year’s draft. We’re watching you, Rolando and Rennie!

S Nicholas is on a mission this season to show the Falcon Organization and team mates, the faith bestowed upon him last year will be repaided in full. The revelations in Pat Yasinskas’ article, which IMO, is the feel good story of the year, showed to me the true character of the Nicholas’ family. He will not disappoint .

Birdman, the defense will struggle at times but I am quite confident that they will mature as the season progresses. Leadership is the key and we have several young leader emerging. Babs is taking his role very seriously on the DL. Coleman is emerging in the secondary. Peterson was brought in to bring intensity and leadership to the young LB corps. I think it was my brother UnCa Bob (Semper Fi my man) who predicted that we will be in serious sync on D by week five. Tall order…but D3 and Jason have given me enough reason to put aside my reservations about BVG calling the defensive shots. I think the Process continues…..

Good morning guys. Night shift is killin me. I was off this weekend and still up half the night. Alot of good posts on Nicolas. D3 had some good questions to ponder? I posted on Nicolas and I think he will have a breakout year. I don;t know how big, though. Just a dependable starter this year and I would be happy. I also think Wire will be a strong contributor this year as well. When you look at what we have at LB, it is interesting. We have Nicolas, Lofton, and Petereson as our startrers. The question comes at the back ups. I feel like Spencer Adkins will make the team as a ST Warrior. That’s 4 for 6 spots. This will come down to Wire vs James vs Winborn vs Gilbert. I feel like Wire has the edge from what he did last year on ST and as a starter in place of Boley. The only thing working against him is his age. Winborn, I think is here for merely competition. If he somehow catches fire and starts dropping everything, I could see him taking a spot, highly unlikely, though. The real battle for the last spot will come down to Gilbert vs James, and may the best man win.

Wire, James, and Gilbert will make the cut with Adkins being brough back for practice squad duties. Remember, special teams are a HIGH priority with TD. He draft James for that role last season and Wire adds that “it” factor as well as provides depth. We can keep Adkins on the practice squad and move him into the active roster next season.

Cage Birds–here’s one that might rattle you. Mike Smith was talking about RW being back in camp, about the lost time, and said that you can get money back but you can’t get time back. That’s what he said, more or less–you can get money back but you can’t get time back. The question to me is, what does that mean? See what I’m saying? What did he mean by that?
For instance, I went back over to Walmart and bought 200 minutes on my phone card. Which is all I hard to start with. See?

Bridman, no offense taken. BB is still there; there is a lot of talk that this is the grand finale but I will wait and see. And since CB is holding Mark Richt hostage in Athens, I guess hope that he comes back for one more round as I’m not sold on Jimbo Fisher.
Here is how I would handle the QB situation…
I would give Shock and JPW each three quarters in the first two games with Redman mopping up. He has experience so it will not be a big deal. The third preseason game start would go to the best of those two in a 50/50 split with Redman. Most of the Cage feels that this is where we will make the decision to cut Redman as a cap reliever. MR should not touch the ball until the final preseason game.

Haha yea I’m keeping a tight lock on him for the foreseeable future and beyond. The only way I see Richt leaving is if FSU offers him the sun, the moon and the stars.

CB, that is exactly what I think will happen. Our QB depth chart will not change. It will end up being MR, Shock, and Redman. Redman will redo his deal to stay with us. There really is not much else out there for him as most of the teams with QB needs seem to have already addressed them.

Good points my friends. I see Shock as ATL’s version of Jim Sorgi, the Indy backup. Be ready at all times but just know that the odds are not in your favor. I guess that is where the Process comes into play.

SW,
A third round pick could very well come on as a starter. Having said that, if you are comfortable and confident with your #2 QB, and having four years of nurture invested , that’s why I keep him.

I found some other guys I am researching. Maybe some names are familiar:
OLB Jerry Hughes, TCU
DE/OLB Antonio Coleman, Auburn
OLB Brandon Lang, Troy
There are quite a few guys in the 2010 draft at the OLB position, including some DE’s and SS that could make the transition. Next year’s draft should be a treasure chest for the Falcons, even after the top three or 4 LB’s are taken. One mock draft site, nfldraftdog, even has Sean Weatherspoon falling to us at #24.

SW, why would MIN give a 3 rounder for a 7 rounder. They will Farve coming outta his wheel chair ( LOL) anyway. I have a question on these Mizzou players, Hood, Moore, and now witherspoon. Are these guys really that good? They are all coming from a Big 12 School, and they don’t play defense there. The reason I ask is Witherspoon and Moore both should have alot of tackles, seeing how they both are in pass coverage all the time. Don’t get me wrong, I am glad we got Moore. Probably the best player on that defense, but I am no going to be quick to say Witherspoon will be the best LB in the draft next year.
Here’s a question on the roster. We can carry 53 on the roster, and I believe we can carry 7 on the practice squad, how many on the practice squad can be untouchable? I thought I read somewhere that you can protect a player on the practice squad. If not, then there is no way I am putting Adkins on the practice squad so someone else can claim him. Besides, I have been saying since the draft that all picks would make the team this year.

Jason, I was just throwing something out there to keep the flow moving. My honest feel is,as I stated, that Shock will become ATL’s version of Jim Sorgi. Redman will restructure to stay on the team but Shock will be the long term #2. Two reasons: 1) He appears to be a good study and 2) His UGA connections and local appeal will sell tickets. Mad Mike will incorporate some “Slash Stewart” plays into the scheme for him.
You can protect a player on the PS until November. Then if there is no action on him, he can have a claim placed on him by another team. That is what happened last year with Sarah and my guy Snelling. Dallas had a desire for him so we moved him off the PS to protect him.
As far as the Mizzou defensive stars we have been discussing, I truly do think that they are that good. And with our defensive coaches, they could be major players. Sean Weatherspoon is just that good for sure!!
JWW, I truly believe he could be available to us at our pick.

The LB corps and its future is second only to the OL situation next offseason in my opinion. Nicholas is a FA in 2011 so this is crucial year for him and he will shine. Wire and Petersen are both done also in 2011 but they are on the wrong side of 30. Robert James is with us until 2012. So we have to look at the draft again.
The best FA OLB available next off-season will be Thomas Davis. Easy, all you Georgia fans!! He will command a high price and given our OL issues, we may not be able to make a legit run at him. But what a find if we could…Davis, Lofton, and Nicholas. All in their prime, mid 20’s, and secured for the long haul. No that would be a nightmare LB corps!!

SW, I was just curious about the Mizzu guys. You know how in college you can get labeled.
No probs on the J thing, I was just curious about that scenario; a # round pick for a 7 rounder.
What you said about the PS, I can see Adkins placed there as much as I want him on the team playing ST. That wouls be the wisest so you can keep both Wire and Gilbert.

Jason, Childress is a joke!! Nate Davis from Ball State was there for him to take as a development project. Davis is a little shorter than the norm but he has some serious upside. If he is the QB guru he claims to be, then bring then left Rosenfels keep the seat warm while he worked more with Jackson or Davis. I’m tired of all these “geniuses” thinking that Favre is the savor of all. The dude is done!!
Oops…sorry for that rant. Back to defensive chat.

SeminoleWarrior, That’s why I mentioned Farve. He will come back and play for MIN, but like Roger Clemens, he will hold the team hostage for millions of dollars just to be a mediocre QB. That’s all he his at this point. I used to like Farve, lost alot of respect for him these past 3 year or so. Contemplating retirement just so he can get a new deal for even more money. Players like him is a lot of what’s wrong in sports.

Good Job D3 and the day shift cage rs, lots of good stuff.
It`s time for the evening shift to clock in.
Been saying, Nicholas is about to breakout like a bad rash, causing pain and suffering, the guy can seriously bring the wood.
The difference we should see in SLB position should be profound as Boley played like he was on roller skates last reason.

All-Falcons Monday (Take III): VanGorder under gun again
FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons won 11 games last season. I felt the need to type those words again as a reminder because after looking at some defensive statistics from 2008, I was afraid maybe I had imagined the whole season.
They had the 25th ranked rushing defense. They had the 24th ranked overall defense. They allowed 64 plays of 20-plus yards, which would’ve been just like the Pittsburgh Steelers, if only the Pittsburgh Steelers had been headless and limbless. (Full-bodied, the Steelers allowed only 27 such plays.)
The New Orleans Saints lit up Atlanta for 25 first downs and 521 yards. The Falcons won that game, 34-20.
“Now, we weren’t always perfect,” Brian VanGorder said, smiling. “But you look at points allowed, which is the key stat for a defense, and we did a pretty good job.”
VanGorder is the Falcons’ defensive coordinator. I venture to say that if you really want to know how many games the team will win this season, it starts with him. With Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez, the question isn’t whether the Falcons will score a ton of points this season — the question is how many games they’ll be forced to win 34-30.
Gone from the defense are several veterans, including Lawyer Milloy and Keith Brooking. The team will be younger and faster. But there’s also the possibility they will be younger and faster but run in the wrong direction.
The Falcons finished 24th in total defense but 11th in scoring last season.
Then again, VanGorder and head coach Mike Smith (whose background is in defense) somehow managed to make things work a year ago. Opponents’ offensive possessions could have been measured by the acre. But the defense allowed only 20.3 points per game, which ranked 11th in the league.
They didn’t do this with an inordinate number of sacks or interceptions or forced fumbles. They just did it with . . . well, we’re not exactly sure how they did it. Must’ve led the league in survival techniques.
VanGorder has heard the smoke-and-mirrors references. His response: “I don’t get concerned when I hear those things. From my standpoint, we had good chemistry and a bunch of guys committed to doing what they needed to do for us to win.”
When asked about the onus being on the defense, he said, “I think most of us, meaning defensive coordinators, always feel that way. Offenses across the league have gotten more challenging for us. But the pointing at the defense, the wondering about us and all that – we can’t focus on that.”
He’ll tell you he likes this situation. Young players he can mold. Young players he can be aggressive with. He said he considers himself, “a developmental coach.” It’s what made him so successful for four years at Georgia (a standard Bulldogs fans will tell you that Willie Martinez hasn’t quite lived up to).
It has taken VanGorder a while to get comfortable since then. A year at Jacksonville coaching linebackers. A forgettable season at Georgia Southern as the head coach. A year with the Falcons under Bobby Petrino in 2007, after which he accepted the coordinator’s job at South Carolina — only to make a 180 and decide to stay after Smith’s hiring (which didn’t thrill Steve Spurrier).
There will be some debate about who should get more credit for the defense: VanGorder or Smith. But there’s no questioning how players feel about him. As cornerback Erik Coleman said, “He did great last year in terms of instilling us with that sense of urgency. We love his aggressive [nature]. We take on the personality of our coordinator – being aggressive, being physical, flying around. That’s what we like to do. That’s part of our identity.”
It’s an identity that enabled them to win 11 games last season. Even if the numbers don’t quite add up.

In regards to the above article.
The Falcons did it with superb special teams play.
The kick cover teams was the best I have ever seen.
To allow only 49 punt return yards (on the season) is a stat that is mind boggling.
Forcing teams to go 75 yrds to score helped keep the points scored against down.
I think, BVG is a good DC but he was working with garbage to defend against some of the best offenses in the NFL.

D3, nuff respect!!! Cagers, greetings to one and all. I have just caught up with my reading and I am so proud of you all. Is there a “Fan Blog Ranking”? We should be pretty high on that list…lol
Some very good points by one and all and with the intermittent link and “fact bits” that come piling in, it all makes for very entertaining and informative reading. Keep it up guys and gals.
Some things I think, I think (respect to Peter King). I think Nicholas will have an excellent season. I think he will play with reckless but controlled abandon. I think he is more than appreciative of the “love” shown to him during a very difficult time in his life and he will play with this in mind and will come to every tackle very hungry. I think he will be fine and rise above the ocassion. This indeed augers well for the Falcons!!
On the question of Cory Wire, I am also very optimistic about him. I have no problem with his age. I think he has a lot more “thread” on those tires and will do us proud this season. I saw a little piece of the feature on him and he seems to have stepped up his training regimen and will have a well tuned motor this year. He along with our younger LB’s will de-wire the offense this year and I can’t wait!!!
I also have no problem with Cory’s relative anonymity or any of the other LB’s for that matter. I rather have the “No Name” defense. Smitty and Van Gorder can help them stay hungry. I also have no problem with the so-called experts (or most of them), expecting us to underachieve this year. However, I am guided by Ken Strick’s usual “sermon”…..we may win less games but be much improved. Keep preaching it my brother.
Glad to have Roddy back in the fold and I endorse what Smitty says….you can’t recover time. Hopefully he will reward us fans and the organization with a memorable season and show us how much he appreciates the new contract.
Go Falcons!!!!
Nuff respect everytime!!!

BT, thanks for reminding us of that stat. That is exactly why we were 11th in points allowed. 49 punt return yards is an unbelievable stat. That is 3 yards per game…may I repeat…3 yards per game!!! Is that a record? Must be!!! Please enlighten me fellow cagers if it is not and tell me who has the record.
We as fans tend to underestimate the importance of special teams. It can give our offense a very short field to work with or our opponents offense a longer field to try to score. That is exactly why we beat a lot of teams last year. It was all started by the special teams. Hopefully thay can improve on that performance.
Excellent point BT.
Go Falcons!!!!

BIRDMAN, The Falcons have a three headed monster in Turner, White and Gonzalez.
That`s just the Pro Bowler, without even including Ryan, Norwood and Jenkins plus, a very good O-line.
The games will be high scoring alright.
With a younger, faster and more aggressive defence that`s hell bent on stuffing the run, pressuring the passers and creating more turnovers.
The pressure will be on opposing teams to stay in the games.
The Falcons offense likes to strike early and secure an early lead, then pound you with a smash mouth rushing attack.
An attacking agressive defence is the correct compilment IMO.
Speed and agressiveness is > than just standard well coached technique.
