Ready for Some Training Camp Football?

Jerry, Moore, & Nicholas Will be in Heated Battles (espn.com)

((((Updates))))

Training camp updates will be posted in the comments section as they become available throughout the weekend.

Good News First
As DOL reported last night, Dimitroff & Co. signed our 1st round draft pick Peria Jerry. That makes it official in signing ALL 8 draft picks ready to go for training camp.

The Long Wait is Finally Over!
Ah, the dark clouds of no-football have finally lifted, and we’re finally ready for some FALCONS FOOTBALL! Training camp is here ladies and gentleman. The long, excruciating pain of waiting for a new football season has at last come to an end. The post draft buzz wore off quickly; leaving us football junkies only with the heat of summer and a few tidbits from mini-camp and OTA’s to fill our appetite. Mini-camp only lasted a couple of days and organized training activities were basically a roll call of who was present and who failed to show. Training camp is the unofficial start to football season, which is the best time of year for most of us. The anticipation of training camp gives us football fanatics a glimpse of what the Falcons have and makes the month of August the most exciting time of the year in terms of waiting. Other sports are enjoyable to watch, but can be time fillers for the real season to get underway for many of us.

Competition, Competition, Competition
Heading up to Flowery Branch can be a great way to get a first hand glimpse at some of the best training camp battles for the new season. Dimitroff, Coach Smith & Co. have set out to make this camp one of the most competitive in Falcons history. Dimitroff has stocked the pantry full with almost 75 players getting invited to camp in an attempt to create fierce battles (as DOL noted) up and down the roster. The competition looks to be intense at many positions, particularly on defense, backup spots, and special teams. Some key battles to look for:

DeCoud in a Huge Battle (JimmyCribb/atlantafalcons.com)

DeCoud in a Huge Battle (JimmyCribb/atlantafalcons.com)

Strong Safety – Thomas DeCoud #28 vs. William Moore #24
This is the big one. The battle for starting strong safety has been identified as the biggest battle of training camp, even noted as one of the top 10 competitions in the entire league by many in the NFL media, including Pat Kirwan from NFL.com. The battle for Milloy’s old job pits second year man DeCoud against rookie Moore. DeCoud may have the inside track being in the system for a year, but many think Moore was one of the biggest steals of the draft with huge upside.

Can Trey Beat Out Peria? (atlantafalconstalk.com)

Can Trey Beat Out Peria? (atlantafalconstalk.com)

Defensive Tackle – Peria Jerry #94 vs. Trey Lewis #67
Lauded as a great pick when Dimitroff selected Peria Jerry with the 24th overall pick, Jerry brings a toughness, ferocity, and motor that should be a slam dunk for a starting spot. Trey Lewis may have a few things to say about that. Lewis had an excellent start to his own rookie campaign before going down with a knee injury. He suffered another injury a year and half later in a freak accident. Even though Jerry likely has the inside track, Lewis finally looks to be healthy and add some fire to the battle. Jerry’s signed, locked, and loaded so let the battle begin!

6th OLB Spot – Robert James #51 vs. Spencer Adkins #59
It’s the battle of 2008’s fifth round draft pick LB versus 2009’s sixth round draft pick LB. James never got off the ground in training camp after suffering a concussion, was subsequently waived, and resigned. Known as “The Beast” for his intense and punishing style of hitting, James is considered a touch light at 219 lbs for an OLB. Adkins is an extremely raw talent, but has a serious skill set running a sub 4.5 40-time and being a touch taller and weighing 10 lbs heavier. This one might come down to who’s better on special teams. ((Update: Falcons reportedly signed Bronco LB Jamie Winborn on the eve of camp, so this certainly throws a wrench into the LB debate)).

Brown & Snelling Both on Roster? (CurtisCompton/AJC.com)

Brown & Snelling Both on Roster? (CurtisCompton/AJC.com)

3rd RB Spot – Jason Snelling #44 vs, Thomas Brown #27
Snelling vs Brown: The Sequel. By far one of the most heated and intense battles of training camp last year. Brown and Snelling went toe-to-toe until the very end, when Brown got a cheap-shot horse collar in the last pre-season game after a nice kickoff return. Snelling proved his worth making the most of a small amount of playing time with a few screens and nice runs. This may be a moot point since it’s fairly likely that Brown and Snelling may both make the roster: Brown as a return specialist and 3rd down back, and Snelling being more of a backup fullback and short-yardage back. A good idea to develop both since Norwood could likely hit the free agent market and be gone.

5th Wide Receiver Spot -
Aaron Kelly #15 vs. Eric Weems #14 vs. Troy Bergeron #11 vs. Brandon Godfrey #17 vs. Darren Mougey #16 vs Chandler Williams #18
Don’t let the low-level of the position fool you, this looks to be one of the best battles of August. The competition has everything, including rookies (Kelly, Mougey, Godfrey), former Arena League standouts (Bergeron), practice squad veterans (Williams), and a player who made it up to the active roster (Weems). Hometown talent Aaron Kelly (Walton High) looks to have the most upside after breaking records at Clemson, but needs to gain weight. Mougey offers great height at 6′6, 230 lbs. Weems may have the inside track after getting moved up to the active roster, and Williams knows what it takes to make practice squads. Bergeron had a great career for the Georgia Force and Godfrey was a late undrafted rookie free agent signee. Great competition for the 5th WR spot.

The lack of news, gossip, nonsense, etc. that has surfaced before in previous training camps is a good sign (What was the name of the coach a few years ago still going through puberty?). If we can make it through TC with the minimal distractions this will bode well for the rest of the year. Success in the past has usually evolved into “look at me issues”, Atlanta being so hungry for a winner (especially in football), would tolerate and even embrace egotistical behavior for this reason. I think the people involved with the organization now have a very low tolerance for this type of behavior. Keep it going guys!

I am new to the blog but I want to comment on some previous blog discussions;

1. Uniforms. Our present uniforms look like USFL-XFL uniforms. The sleeves are absolute ridiculous looking. Go back to tradition. Gray pants, red, white even black jerseys. Update on the falcon emblem is impressive. All black? If the intended effect was to intimidate opponents, well it does not take a astrophysics person to figure out that did not work.

2. D3 – excellent job. You and the bloggers on this site are the true fans.

3. J. Anderson. We have to admit that he was way overrated as far as talent and potential was concerned (however not to the extent that Andre Bruce was in the 80s). He is not going to be a superstar but he can contribute to the overall effort. Coming to terms with what he can do and not what he was expected to do will help everyone to move on from this issue.

Good news so far. No silly, adolescent behavior coming from the players, coaches so far (who was that previous coach that was in the middle of puberty a few years back?). Seems to be a very low tolerance for this type of behavior which bodes well for the future. So far they (organization) has done a masterful job of containing egos, hyperagressive personalities, and real sociopathic behavior at bay that comes with professional sports teams.

Would like to comment on past blogs:

1. Uniforms. Get rid of the current version. Go back to a more traditional look. Gray pants, red, white, black jerseys, etc. Love the new falcon on the helmet!

2. J.Anderson. Let it be. He is not as talented as projected. Fine, he still can contribute, but not at the level that comes with the high expectations of a number one draft choice.

3. Good blog D3. You and the faithful fans (through thick and thin) are the real fans! Keep it up.

Unca Bob,

Quick question. Not sure if I skipped this in my reading or not but would a 3-4 defense make up for the lack of speed on a team(not this team since we had speed to kill)?

I’m going to my first TC on Sunday…I’m very excited about it…the anticipation for this season has been excruciating, but it’s finally about to kick off!

6th WR: Aaron Kelly is an intriguing prospect given his height and speed…apparently, his hands are what prevented him from being drafted. I believe that roster spot will come down to him and Eric Weems, who played with wreckless abandon on special teams last season.

SS: Thomas Decoud enters as the starter, but reportedly, it’s William Moore that the coaches want to see take the position. We’ll see just how good Decoud and Moore both are, but if Moore is able to grasp the system, I do believe his athleticism will catapult him over Decoud.

6th OLB: We’ll see if Robert James is a football player or not, but given his concussion history, he may be a Dan Morgan waiting to happen. The staff and front office are extremely high on Spencer Adkins, and have all but already mapped out his career through the media — Special Teams gunner and contributor Year One…OLB Speed Rusher Year Two and beyond… no way he doesn’t make the roster.

3rd and 4th RB: It would be extremely tough to leave either Jason Snelling or Thomas Brown (if fully recovered) off the roster… hate to think about it, but it is a possiblity that Norwood wears another uni next season…

I know this is off topic a bit, but it was brought up last night about the Madden ‘10 ratings…Why are D.J.’s and Thomas Brown’s “AWR” ratings the lowest on the entire team? I am aware that “AWR” stands for “Awareness”, and I also know that rookies tend to have lower “AWR” ratings (although D.J. is no rookie), but the low numbers for both those guys are scary-low. Is this a wonderlic test thing or does EA Sports have a grudge against the Dawgs? haha

Great Friday Afternoon Fellow ‘Cagers! First of all, let me get the bad news out of the way: I really hate to say it, but I can’t make it to the Bird Cage meetup tomorrow. It sucks extremely bad, but somethings come up and I can’t make it.

Dean21, CBrass, Sarah B., BT, and falcon21 and anyone else, sorry I can’t make it guys and gals but I will DEFINITELY be going to the Brookwood Friday Night Lights Scrimmage AND the Roam the Dome event the following saturday morning next weekend. Dean21 thanks for setting up everything and I really hate it I can’t make it there with you all. Take pictures and send them so I can post it up in the ‘Cage.

JWW – Great news on Jerry. All 8 picks are locked, loaded, and ready to go. Impressive.

Krebs – I think his name was Lil’ Jimmy Mora, or are you talking about Bobby Pric-trino? So nice to have a stable, nuts-and-bolts football head coach for a change. I like the old school uni’s as well, but those all black are tough. Thanks for the complements on the blog. Its going really well so far and we’re getting a lot of good feedback. This is JA’s year for sure. Boom or Bust time, no more excuses.

Unca’ Bob – Maybe one of these days we can all meet up sometimes. That would be a ton of fun.

bn – Lets all keep our fingers and toes crossed for no injuries, particularly #94 and #67.

Ric Roc – Have a great time. I’m really t’d I can’t make it, but I can’t wait for the two scrimmages next weekend. Bring some updates back to the ‘Cage. Good point on wide receiver analysis. I think it will only a 5th receiver, because I think we’ll be keeping 5 DT’s, 5 DE’s, and 5 RB’s, so the cut will have to come somewhere. I like Weems, but I love Kelly’s potential. I want us to try and somehow hang on to several. Kelly as BFinn’s eventual replacement and either Weems or Mougey(6′6, 230) as a project.

row3 – Here’s a link on some things to do while at Flowery Branch from atlantafalcons.com, sorry I won’t be able to make it. http://www.atlantafalcons.com/News/Articles/2009/06/11-20/Falcons_Announce_2009_Russell_Training_Camp_practice_times.aspx

Have a great friday and start to the weekend ladies and gents! Check in later……..

The Atlanta Falcons today signed rookie free agent offensive lineman Adam Speer. Speer, 6-3, 301 pounds, graduated from Oregon State as a four-time Pac-10 Conference Academic Honorable Mention selection.

In 2008, he participated in all 13 games on the offensive line, including the Beavers’ 3-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers in the Sun Bowl. Last season, Speer also blocked for an OSU passing attack that ranked second in the conference with an average of 249.0 yards per game.

Am I really the only person who is concerned about our cornerbacks? We really need to upgrade this position (both sides) and I do not read or hear anything regarding our weakness at the cornerback positions. We have a few potential starters, but we really do not have any solid, definite starting caliber corners on the roster. Chris Houston is a liability; watch games from last season if you do not believe me.

I am interested in the informed thoughts of D3 and anyone else on the forum who has insightful opinions regarding our cornerback situation. Also, why does it seem like nobody else is concerned about our cornerbacks?

D3: Do you think the Falcons plan to sign a starting caliber cornerback if another team cuts someone due to salary cap issues?

GT Grad,
I think, the reason the Cage has not focused too on the Corners (yet) or lately is because the general opinion is that, the secondary will be improved overall because of the added speed at SS position and with a more athletic and disruptive D-line, improved play and speed at LB, our safety`s will stay more in deeper zone coverage, instead of being forced to come up in run support.
That will help our Corners a lot.
IMO, Houston is progressing nicely in spite of the prior circumstance of being left in man cover often and Chevis Jackson has progressed well in his nickle assignments last season.
Brent Grimes played technically well until his injury sidelined him last season and there is also a returning veteran in Von Hutchins from his foot injury.
The two draft picks (Owens and Middelton) show lots of promise, with Owens having a chance to break the starting lineup at some point during the season but I suspect Houston and Jackson as our starting two corners on game one with others gaining experience within a rotation of nickle and dime sets.

I am not D3 but I don`t see any team cutting a starting caliber veteran corner over cap issues.
That would have likely happened before the June 1 cut deadline.

Pat Yasinskas (12:58 PM)

Don’t think it would make a lot of sense for him. He’ll only be a restricted free agent in 2010. Think the smart thing is for him to show. I think the Falcons would like to get this done and I think it could happen during the preseason.

JJ

I like Roddy, but he is not a top 5 receiver in the nfl. Although all rec. miss some catches, roddy misses some big ones. That being said, he is our #1 receiver and I know they want to restructure his contract. Take the avg. pay for #6-10 and pay him. He has little leverage and I hope this holdout is brief. He did nothing to earn the 1st 2 yrs of his contract…but nfl contracts are not the same as we know in the real world. I hope they fix this quickly, cause a prolong hold out will really hurt roddy. You’re ass belongs to the falcons for the next 2 yrs and $15k a day does add-up. No worries yet, just concerned!

CBrass, don`t get caught up in contract issues involving one of our star players.
We can`t (as fans) loose respect for Roddy over this, at this point.
Roddy HAS proven himself as an elite WR in this league and 2 million a year is way low for a player of his current status.
If he is holding out? He is only simply using the only leverage he has to expedite his compensation up to his relative worth.
You also should go read Schultz article and hopefully you will understand the players side a little better.

From the players side of it, most contracts are only guaranteed to a point.
Then if you get cut or suffer a career ending injury.
You get nothing or an injury settlement.
Can`t blame a guy for trying to get all he can, while he can, up front.

That`s just the way the business side of this business works.

White a no-show as Falcons prepare for camp

By D. ORLANDO LEDBETTER

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Falcons Pro Bowl receiver Roddy White, who held out after being drafted 27th in the 2005 NFL Draft, was a no-show during the team’s media availability session on Friday.

White and the rest the team has until 5 p.m. to report for training camp, which opens on Saturday.

Team members will be considered a holdout if they don’t arrive in time for the first team meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Falcons would not confirm whether White had arrived at camp, or made the team meeting.

CBrass

BT,

He is under contract as of right now and I really do not understand why he’s holding out. The way that I look at it is he has a job that pays pretty damn good money therefore he should have reported to camp on time. It doesn’t sit well with me when a player does this. He’s being selfish IMO. If they can’t get him signed by the start of the season then he should use every practice and every game to show management why he deserves the money that he’s asking for. If he goes out and play like Fitz then there is no doubt that he should get the 9 mil a year that he’s asking for and I’m sure that T.D. and AB would have no problem in giving him what he deserves.

falcon21,

I hear ya!!! If he wants to be considered as a top receiver he can’t continue to drop passes. Just think back to the Denver game this past season.

BT

July 31st, 2009

Falcon21- Do your research and you will find Roddy`s chronic drops stopped when Vick left.
For the last two years his rating has been very high in that department.

Y`all, I know it`s frustrating not having our star WR in camp but please stop with the unfounded criticism that`s largely based on envy.

Let our top shelf GM handle it.

Greetings all Falcon Nation!!! It is indeed “Christmas Eve” and we’ll have all our Santas at FB tomorrow. Unfortunately I’ll not be there but I expect to get regular updates from you guys who are going.

D3, JJ, CBrass, Unca’ Bob sorry to hear you guys can’t make it. I guess you are all in the same boat as I am, only thing my boat is way up north.

So I have lost my bet. Roddy is a no show. Can’t say I’m surprised. I agree with you BT, most if not all players do it, it’s their negotiating ploy. CBrass, I’m with you, I wish they didn’t do it but that’s the nature of this business. I’ll join the consensus and say Roddy ain’t top 5, and not sure he will be either. I am not convinced he’s a heady player and his track record says that he has dropped some real telling catches. However, I still think we will get this contract done. TD knows how to do his thing, as I stated in a prior blog. I do know also he will not overpay.

As my favourite artist says……Don’t worry about a thing, ’cause every little thing is gonna be all right!!!…Robert Nesta……..

Sarah B, will you be there tomorrow? Since D3 won’t be there I’m depending on you to raise a toast to me…lol

GT Grad, your concerns are well placed. I too am a little worried about our CB’s because I am not sold on Houston. He appeared as if he got burned on some crucial plays last year. However, I use the word “appeared” as I did not break down the film. Sometimes the man who appears to get beat on TV is not necesarily the one who caused it. Someone else may have missed an assignment but I have seen enough that makes me a little concerned. After all we were 21st against the pass. We gave up 220 YPG (yards per game, excluding postseason) and 6.9 yards per completion. Not very encouraging. However, I have all trust in the Dynamic Duo (TD and Smitty) that they have put the right personnel in place to fill that gap. That position’s progress will be interesting to watch during TC.

Go Falcons!!!

Nuff respect everytime!!!

Isnt it great to have a coach we can all believe in. As far as roddy, if he comes to camp and shows he is over the dropsies they will give him what he deserves. Coach Van you have what you need now show why you are the D cordinator.
I really believe this is the year we win the south.

BT & Nookah,

Good comments……….I am excited and expect the Falcons to have a very good year. I am a huge Falcons fan and I cannot disagree with the comments posted by either of you guys. I tape most games and watch them later to see how certain players perform and I have some legitimate concerns regarding Houston & Grimes. I think Chevis Jackson has more potential as an effective starter and I hope Von Hutchins proves to be solid (maybe even a starter). The problem is we really do not have any clear cut definite starting caliber corners at this juncture.

I was wondering if I was the only fan with serious concerns regarding our corners. I would really love to see two of our current corners develop into superb starting caliber palyers. I realize the likelihood of signing a free agent starting caliber corner at this juncture is not very good (highly unlikely) and I definitely would rather see the Falcons develop existing/young players at the corner position (due to salary cap implications).

I suppose I should have asked if the Falcons decision makers are concerned about the position that I think is our biggest weakness (or maybe biggest question mark) going into the 2009 season. I am somewhat perplexed that there has been so little dicussion regarding such a critical position this off-season.

Great Atlanta Falcons Training Camp Excitement Day, Bird Cage Ladies and Gents! Its really hard to believe that its actually here. Footballs back! Sweet relief for so many of us that have been having withdrawals since Big Ben threw the game winning pass to Santonio Holmes in the Super Bowl.

boxcarar – You got it. Its going to be a really tricky situation to maneuver with TD and Roddy. I’m in the midst of a serious research session, trying to find good points for both sides. Coming soon.

cutter – Thanks my brother. Excellent to have that update on signing. Looks to be a body for camp to fill in for Newberry retiring after being a Falcon for only 3 weeks. But who knows, Clabo and Dahl kind of went the same route, so who knows.

GT GRAD – Thanks for joining us here in the Bird Cage. You are certainly not the only one to have serious fears and doubts about our cornerback situation. We really have no lockdown CB. I think Houston has made serious progress, but as you said, he was a big liability in many situations (3rd & 7 with 4 minutes left and Brandon Marshall gets a 47 yard first down completion). It’s a big unknown. TD, Smitty & Co. are very excited about the guys they have. Chevis Jackson played lights out in the nickel last year, Brent Grimes could be a perfect nickel this year, Chris Owens might be an amazing TD draft steal, Von Hutchins coming back from injury (hopefully), and William Middleton looking to push all of the above for a roster spot. There may not be any superstars in there, but the competition will produce some studs for this year. CB analysis coming week after next in the Bird Cage, all DB’s on deck. Talking about your boy Vance Walker soon; really excited to see him.

CBrass – Love that pic of you and Pollack (one of the best and most revered UGA players of ALL TIME)! Had a feeling it was coming on Roddy. I’m doing research to play both sides.

BT – You are the man. You can sub for me anytime on opinions, because you know as much or more than me on Falcons Football and we agree on pretty much everything anyway.

JJ – Exactly right. Its 17 grand a day I believe. I would assume that they would do the same thing with him that they did with Babs and Jenks DURING the season. I would be willing to bet that TD is from the Belichick school of thought and refuses to set a precedent of allowing players to “demand” new deals.

CBrass(2) – Thank you so much for bringing that up. 1 out of every 10 Americans are unemployed, teachers, cops, and firefighters are getting furloughed, and this guys is b**** about a couple of mill. for playing a game we all love. Bad time to gripe for more money.

JJB – Good point my man. With all the other 74 Falcons being in camp, he kind of looks like a chump. TD & Co have shown they reward players for their great contributions to the Atlanta Falcons, so suit up and come to camp.

BT & JJ – Do I need to arrange for a meetup for brewskis? Fellow FFL Bird Cagers we know its all good in here. H—, WR’s not even in here stirring the pot. We’re all family in here my friends.

falcon21 – Best comment of the night. If you get paid 9 mill a year, you better NEVER drop a game winning pass. Sorry I can’t make it tomorrow, but I will definitely be at the Friday Night Light and Roam the Dome Event next weekend.

Nookah – Hate to diverge, but have you listened to Michael Franti? Good, good stuff in the mold of “Jah Rule”. Anyway, I’d love to come share a scripe or Labatts in the Northern country with you my man.

Jimbo – I think the Cage meetup has dwindled some, but several of our members should be there around the hill at mid-field maybe. BTW, we got our own blog my man. Can’t wait for you to get back in the debate.

ToccoaBird – Great comment. It is really nice to have a Coach to believe in. I don’t think we’ll see Coach Smith drop to his knees like a little chump (lil’ Jimmy Mora) or be a complete Benedict Arnold (Bobby Pric-trino).

D3 – I don’t know how you pulled this off, but great job. You deserve it. It was primarily your effort that kept this thing going all summer, especially from mid June on. WTG . . . It seems like something might happen tomorrow instead, at least as far as Cagers abiltiy to make it out to the branch, so maybe we’ll get to meet up. Any way I’ll be wearing my Penn State cap.
You took the words right out of my mouth regarding the ” Beer Summit” but it’s all good.

CBrass – it’s been fun reading your stuff, I like the heat and passion you bring to the Cage. I especially like your humbleness and willingness to ask questions and learn more about this game and team we love, you couldn’t learn from anyone better than the guys in the Cage (and SarahB, of course). Go to school on Unca’ Bob, he’s forgotten more than most people know about this game. BTW, Unca’ Bob, thanks for turning us on the the Football Outsiders, way back when, I’ve enjoyed reading the various Strategy Mini-Camp articles.

Well everyone it’s finally here. I can’t wait to see what the competition brings out and who is the cream that rises to the top. I think you hit the nail on the head in your article above, D3, the competition battles are all over the place on the defense and ST. This will be fun to watch. My gut tells me that we are going to see JA98 take it to a ho – nubba – leba. Sometimes it takes a while for the youngsters to get it, but I think he grew up this off season, especially his time spent at camp Chuck Smith. Anyway it shakes out, it will be fun to watch. Well gotta get some coffee and get ready to drive out to the Branch, how cool is that, get to watch the boys again, Yeah Baby!!!

He is underpaid at his current contract, but he has to know that blank and td will take care of his contract, prob. during preseason. Just seams like he’s getting bad advise from his agent, but their lawyers…they screw up everything.

D3 – it’s all good, WR and I got into it a few weeks ago and now were butt-buddies…lol.j/k.(another joke about “bend-over”) I respect BT insight and analysis, dont know how my (sic) humor was misinterpeted, but it is what it is, no harm no foul.

Here are the Wide Receivers on the roster currently-Roddy White, Michael Jenkins, Harry Douglas, Brian Finneran, Troy Bergeron, Chandler Williams, Aaron Kelly, Darren Mougey, Eric Weems, and Bradon Godfrey (I am throwing out JP Wilson on the AF roster as I am amused by te typo but want to point it out). Making the assumption that te Roddy White contract thing gets done soon and the Falcons will carry six WR slots, who makes the roster? Some of these guys have been on the practice squad and 3 are undrafted free agent rookies. I do notice that all of the undrafted free agents are tall – 6′3″, 6′5″, 6′6″. I am not the expert as others here, but I would see a likely ranking as 1) White; 2) Jenkins; 3) Douglas; 4) Finneran; 5) Kelly; 6) Mougey – the others cut or practice squad. There seems to be a desire to get taller receivers and that may keep Finneran around as long as he can keep up with the younger players and still separate from defenders. What do you think?

My thoughts on Roddy….Just #@$@!% pay him. I haven’t seen Lee Evans bring any hardware to Buffalo recently. Realistically speaking, after Mr. Blank’s $110 million 7-card no peek wager, 9 million/year is a reasonable bet on a possible superbowl winning catch and victory.

BT

Here is a take RW84 holdout by a guy named Ton80kid.
Some of you may know him his angle if one that, few fans have considered.

”Ordinarily, I’d bash a player in a heartbeat for holding out…not because I believe the whole “they should honor their contract schtick” because, frankly, I don’t…I believe that most shouldn’t hold because there’s a better way of convincing an organization that you’re more than a paycheck player, and that you love the team you’re with, but simply want more equitable compensation for your dedication and loyalty to said team.

However, in Roddy’s case, I think that holding out might be the best approach for him…his is a slightly more complicated case than your average holdout…he’s entering the 5th year of his contract, and given his productivity the last 2 years, should’ve already been extended by now. Usually this would mean that he’d become an UFA next season, but because of the whole CBA scrapping, which creates the possibility of an uncapped year next season, if the team allows Roddy’s contract to expire without an extension in place, than he becomes a RFA.

As an UFA, Roddy would be free to pursue a big time payday next season, which is more incentive for the Falcons to go ahead and lock him in now. However, as an RFA, the Falcons could actually benefit to the tune of 2 additional 1st rd picks, if another team swoops in and makes him a huge money offer next season…That’s the part of the equation that the Falcons aren’t talking about right now, and it’s the biggest reason that they’re not, at least thus far, trying to get closer to Roddy’s asking price.

So…given this unique situation, I think Roddy has every right to holdout his services. Do I want him in camp and on the field? You’re damn right I do. Do I believe he’s the best offensive weapon we have after Matt Ryan…yep. Are we better with him than we are without him? Yep again. Do we have any other WRs that are capable of putting up the type of #s that he put up last season, this season, if he weren’t here? HELL and NO!!!

With all of that said though…I think he should do what’s best for him in this situation…I just hope that it doesn’t turn into a very lengthy holdout that results in him not getting the reps or practice time in that he needs to perform at a pro bowl level for the entire season. We might still have a formidable offense without him, but we’ll definitely have a better shot at having one with him.”

JJ – Reporting in from my return from the Branch. It was a beautiful morning for football and it was great seeing our beloved Falcons on the field yet again. I think we are going to have some interesting position battles on the defense. I know we all know the CB position will be hotly contested but the standout plays were by Grimes and Owens (Grimes intercepted a Ryan post pass to Harry Douglas, and Owens had a nice break up of a fade route to Harry Douglas and saved a touchdown).

Houston was looking pretty pedestrian and found himself out of position on several instances. He got lucky that they didn’t call his receivers number or he’d have been lit up.

DeCoud had a nice break up (should have been an INT) and seemed to be taking more snaps with the first team D than Moore. I also found it interesting that Von Hutchins was taking snaps from the Safety position.

Thomas Brown, put a move on Jamal Fudge that left him looking up at him from the ground as Brown ran by. I felt sorry for Fudge because there wasn’t a person there that didn’t notice. It sure got Brown some positive attention.

Havey Dahl was having his way with Peria Jerry, and obviously there were no pads and holding wasn’t called but Harvey was manhandling him. All in all, it was a fun morning and whets the appetite for more and more of the Birds.

Unca’Bob – Thanks for the links to calsci and to cbssports, I’ll be checking that out this afternoon.

I plan on going to the afternoon session tomorrow. I hope to be able to meet some of y’all, but if not, I ‘ll be catching up with you here.

Jimbo – Thanks for the updates my man. Great stuff from camp. Looks like Brent Grimes is in fact in line to earn the starting CB job yet again. From what you saw, it looks like the battle might be between Grimes and Owens. I guess Jackson is looking to stay at the nickel, at least from the first session. I thought for sure that Jackson would be in the mix, but maybe not. Not great signs on Jerry getting manhandled by Dahl. Also, should we look at the Ryan’s pick as a positive for the defense or negative for Matty Ice throwing the pick? Ah, love the over-analysis that I have already engaged in after ONE session. Thanks again Jimbo.

Great Training Camp Excitement Day Fellow ‘Cagers! Big ups to Jimbo for some excellent on the spot observations. That was awesome my man and we truly appreciate it.

Calling All Reports – Just like Jimbo, we welcome and encourage any of you to share your reports, analysis, and overall experiences from training camp at Flowery Branch. For those of us who can’t make it, we truly appreciate it.

From the website Unca’ Bob first brought to our attention:
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/rapid-reports/team/ATL

-Falcons made it official in signing Jamie Winborn, and subsequently released Rashad Bobino. Very intriguing move bringing in another solid OLB, but another one that is over the age of 30. Out of all the LB candidates, that puts the number at 3(Peterson, Wire, Winborn) over 30 and another at 29(Gilbert). Should Adkins and James be worried? Or is Wire now on the hot seat? Many though Bobino may have a chance to at least earn a practice squad spot. Guess not.

-Roddy White holding out gives Harry Douglas a big opportunity. Reportedly looking good during WR drills. White’s holdout may also create another opportunity for an extra WR spot, outside 5th spot. This favors rookies Aaron Kelly, Darren Mougey, & Brandon Godfrey to build for the future.

-Matt Ryan’s second throw of training camp, spot-on-the-money to Michael Jenkins.

-As expected, Mike Peterson, Stephen Nicholas, and Curtis Lofton started with the first team defense. What will the addition of Jamie Winborn add to the mix?

-Falcons scrimmage play Matt Ryan threw a ball that was ready very well by Thomas DeCoud that should have been intercepted. Ryan off target today? or DeCoud making a strong statement? Gotta make the picks though.

-Brent Grimes taking advantage of another opportunity to show his mettle that he deserves to start, despite criticism against his height. Picked off a pass from Ryan going to Harry Douglas. How much do we miss Roddy White now? Could HD be a legit split-end or flanker, or is he specifically a slot WR?

-Chevis Jackson and Chris Houston started as first team CB’s. So evidently Jackson is well in the mixt for starting CB. What a battle to look for.

-Thomas Brown putting on an early show with an ankle breaking juke that looked good. Mostly scout team secondary though. Good to hear him looking strong after the injury.

-Rookie Chris Owens off to a good start too, knocking the ball out of HD’s hands from a ball thrown by Ryan. HD sounds to be struggling as being a pure #2 WR.

-DB Tony Tiller deflecting two passes in a row from Chris Redman. Good start for someone facing a big uphill battle to make the roster in an extremely crowded field.

-Mike Peterson deflected yet another pass that should have been an interception. Great sign of defense or should we worry about Ryan’s start today? Shouldn’t the offense be dominating with no pads on? Right or wrong, Roddy’s holdout position looks to be starting in a strong position. C’mon TD & Co. pay up.

-DJ Shockley looked good on a nice scramble and a hard thrown ball to Rookie Brandon Godfrey. Shockley possibly looking to move up to #2 QB or maybe in direct competition against John Parker Wilson for #3 QB.

-DB Glenn Sharpe was absent from first day of camp due to personal reasons. Coach Smith said he talked to him and should be there on sunday, but not a great way to start when trying to face an enormous uphill battle to make the roster in an extremely crowded DB field.

-Coach Smith discussed Roddy White’s holdout not being a distraction and the fact that they have expanded the playbook in all aspects of the team: OFF, DEF, and SPEC Teams.

Mike Smith on Practice

-Team came out with good energy and came with a good start.
-Not angry with Roddy White, not a distraction. Not concerned with guys that aren’t there.

-Mechanism in place with collective bargaining agreement, so not angry with Roddy.

-No big changes from last year with training camp. Design to rest vets a little more.

-Good day by young secondary DBs. Mentioned Chris Owens, William Moore, and William Middleton.

-Most anxious on how the team will come out. Re-invigorated and ready to go?

John Abraham Interview:

Everybody came out looking good right now. Young guys looking good so far.

Laughing about getting burned by Gonzalez.

The vibe is good in locker room. Hungry, feel like they got cut short last year. Excited about off-season acquisitions.

Vets pushing younger players to stay hungry and not be complacent. Because if they do, they won’t be here long.

Different postition than last year. Good start, but long way to go. Good thing about camp having a long time to get things right.

Excited to get season started. Getting ready to go against Miami in week 1.

Like everybody to be here. Hopeful that the deal will get done soon and get in here with us, because he’s such a big part of the team.

Developing a good rapport with HOF TE Tony Gonzalez.

Coach Smith works you hard, but takes care of you as well. Especially proven vets.

Keys to be more accurate and make less mistakes, getting the ball in the playmakers hands and let them make plays.

Tony Gonzalez-

Everybody’s doing good running around, energetic. Going in the right direction.

Talks about going once a day being a proven vet. Appreciates that from Coach Smith.

He’s excited to see who wants to still play football around the 7th or 8th day of camp. Anyone who says they look forward to training camp is lying or crazy.

Time to get back to work. Training camp’s tough. Especially learning a new offense.

No pressure. Go out and do what he’s done over his career and everything else will take care of itself.

Ryan progressing and ahead of the curve. Very impressed with Ryan’s awareness and great work ethic. Mentioned work ethic comparisons with Peyton Manning or Tom Brady.

Doesn’t need a certain number of catches or looks to be happy. Ready to come in and do his job and help the team. Continues learning and working to improve to get better. Going to take a nap.

-Falcons scrimmage play Matt Ryan threw a ball that was ready very well by Thomas DeCoud that should have been intercepted. Ryan off target today? or DeCoud making a strong statement? Gotta make the picks though.

I don’t always agree with statememnts like. Yes picks are great and IF the field is open in front of run like H@ll. But I strongly recall in more than one game last year especially a Chargers game at the very end they were leading time was almost out and a Charger intercepted the ball – great yes if he had dropped to the ground they could have killed the clock. But he didn’t he got fancy, tried to return it (probably for stats) but got tripped and fumbled the ball the other offense scooped it up for the winning TD. My point is he would have been better to have simply knocked it to the ground for the desired result a Win.

Jimbo

August 1st, 2009
2:44 pm

D3 – Regarding that interception, that was definitely underthrown, the INT occurred at about the goal line so Matt has the balance of the end zone to lead Douglas, not to take anything from Grimes because he had great position. Jackson was getting time with the first squad but the excitement from the D came fro Grimes and Owens.

I can’t wait until these guys are in pads and then we’ll see how Dahl does, it promises to get interesting.

Thanks, for the updates Jimbo and D3

I expect Ryan to be a little off with his timing this early in camp.
It`s nothing to worry about, the timing will come with reps and the rust being brushed off.

It`s nice to hear the young secondary had a good morning session, providing some excitement also good news on Thomas Browns run.

IMO, Shockley has almost no chance of loosing the #3 QB slot to JPW.
Redman has more to worry about loosing the #2 QB slot to Shock.

Here is something to consider, is it better that P.Jerry not be a starting DT for game one?
Not so much that it would reflect bad on Jerry but rather someone else has stepped up.

Mike Smith on any playbook changes: “We’ve expanded (the playbook) in all areas, not just on the offensive side of the ball. … So we’ve evaluated everything we’ve done and you’re going to see, and our opponents are going to see some differences in what we did in 2008.”

Ryan was only a little off today on a few throws but that is to be expected. DJ has the strongest arm in camp although Wilson seems to have a strong arm. TG looked great. Ryan and TG will be hard to stop. The DB’s did look good and Peterson plays with alot of fire, he let us know that when he dropped that int. It was a fun morning and FB is fantastic. Oh I forgot but Turner, Norwood and Brown looked great at RB.

Tony Gonzalez on QB Matt Ryan: “He’s definitely ahead of the curve and I’m impressed by him. He’s what all the hype is, and it means something.”

Harry Douglas on his role on special teams: “I’m looking forward to returning more punts this year, but (RB Jerious) Norwood is the guy on kick returns. If they need me anywhere on special teams I’ll be there.”

Matt Ryan on TE Tony Gonzalez: “I’m enjoying getting to work with him at this camp. I think it’s a great opportunity for all of us to get a feel for what he’s capable of doing, and start to develop a little bit of a rapport with him.”

I am hearing word that T.Jackson (Vikings QB) went down with a knee injury today.
Could that be a possible landing spot for MV7?

Thanks for the updates guys.

Couple things I wanna go ahead and get off my chest. First, I know it’s extremely early, but I don’t see Douglas taking the #2 WR spot away from Jenkins. Jenkins is an ideal spot possession receiver. Someone who can help move the chains running those slants and comebacks with the additional size he offers to complement White. On top of that, I just think Douglas will excel in the slot. Just his body and his makeup seems ideal for a slot-guy. Just my opinion though.

Would be surprised if Jackson isn’t even in the mix to try and get that second starting corner spot. At 6′2, he’s bigger and brings size to the other corner position. He performed well out the nickel last season so I’d expect him to at least get a shot. Still early, we’ll see what progresses through the rest of camp with this situation.

I’d admit I’m looking at the secondary at this point. So many guys battling it out for a couple key positions. .

Appreciate the updates so far, KEEP THEM COMING!

Falcon21-Thank you for you update and assessment.
Will you be attending any future sessions?

Wabe, I`m right there with you on Jackson.
Especially when you consider the the make up of three teams that will be the Falcons primary opposition each and every year.
It`s a fact, all three like to use tall, physical receivers so, it`s necessary to find some big, physical corners to defend what, we know is coming six games a year, every year.
That said, I look at the nickle corner as the 12th starter on defence.

On Jenkins and Douglas.
They are definitely two different types of receivers.
That could go either way on who`s #2.
I like Jenkins blocking, size, hands and physical aspects, he is a proven possession WR.
However, I really, really like HD`s quickness, toughness, explosiveness after he gets his hands on the ball.
Might be just me but if, I am a DC and game planning to stop Jenkins and HD, I am spending more time figuring a way to stop HD than Jenkins.
That is what really decides the distinction between #1,2 or 3 WR designations, at least as far as a defence is concerned.

Second practice is underway and there is still no sign of WR Roddy White.

Michael Jenkins reeled in a one-handed catch in a passing drill. The ball was overthrown and Jenkins fully extended as the ball landed in his palm.

In early scrimmage play, Falcons RB Michael Turner touched the ball two of the first three plays.

Matt Ryan is playing poised in practice, making the necessary check downs if nothing is available downfield.

Roddy White not at Falcons training camp, opportunities for WR Harry Douglas have opened up as he’s received a lot of touches so far.

Hey Y’all:

IT’s ON BABY!!! FOOTBALL SEASON IS NOW HERE!!. Now it is time for our FALCON players to get in shape, get their timing down, establish some unity and team cohesion, learn all the plays, and get the “NASTY” built up to “KICK SOME BUTT” this season. It is time for the FALCON COACHES to teach, scream, yell, motivate, and instilling the “ONE HEATRBEAT!!” team philosophy to the players in continuing the “PROCESSS” of getting to the SUPER BOWL this year: ONE HEARTBEAT= One sound, One voice, One movement, done together, at the same time among THE TEAM, THE FANS, THE MEDIA, and THE COMMUNITY to make us “ONE HEARTBEAT!!”. This is our challenge. This is “OUR SONG” towards winning throughout this season and the next. This is the time for the MEDIA to talk only about the positive activities that these FALCONS have done and are doing this season. This is the time for the FANS and the COMMUNITY to show their stuff , as last year, in supporting our FALCONS. We will sell out the stadium. We will scream our asses off for our Falcons at the Georgia Dome, in the local sports bar, and in our living rooms, and college dormitories. We will wear our Falcon jerseys, hats, and T-Shirts, especially the one’s that say “ONE HEARTBEAT!!”. WE will post Atlanta FAlcon banners and billboards everywhere in the state of Georgia. We are down with this. This is our TEAM. This is our CITY. This our STATE. We are down with this in “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!”. All naysayers beware. It is your time to “EAT CHEESE’ this season and the hereafter. IT IS THE ATLANTA FALCONS AND THEIR FANS TIME TO “RISE”. AND WE WIIL RISE IN “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!”

Not fooling him: Falcons QB Matt Ryan checked a pass down again but CB Chris Houston read it immediately, breaking on the ball and swatting it to the ground.

The Falcons offense is running walk-throughs with the scout team in a cool-down mode as Day 1 of training camp winds down.

The Falcons first-team offenses and defenses are now in 7-on-7s and a one-on-one battle between CB Brent Grimes and WR Harry Douglas is emerging.
