(((((Update)))))For those of you that have already seen this blog posting, there are two new posts over under the Recent Posts Column) on the right hand side >>>>>
I’m Dawson Devitt (handle name: D3) and I’ll be moderating AJC.com’s new Bird Cage, a blog devoted solely for Falcons fans. We’ll be discussing Everything Atlanta Falcons Football, from the perspective of you, the fan. This will be a great place for Falcons and other NFL fans to come and discuss, analyze, and breakdown all things that interest the fanatics that surround our hometown Atlanta Falcons. We’ll talk about the team, the plays, the transactions, the games and everything about the Falcons, but we’ll also be talking about best tailgating areas, best sports bars to watch away games, game day recipes, and all things associated with the entire experience of being a Falcon fan.
My involvement in The Bird Cage stems from being part of a fan forum community through the Falcons beat blog by D.Orlando Ledbetter. The enjoyment started with a thirst for everything Falcons football on the AJC.com website, and quickly developed into a fun hobby that has since become an almost addiction. In an era of social networking sites surging popularity, The Bird Cage became a community forum based around talking Falcons, football, and anything we desired. We welcome you to join in the entertaining arena.
Since this is a blog devoted solely to the fan’s perspective, all themes, ideas, and suggestions are welcome regarding Falcons football and the NFL at large. Even though the Falcons will be the main focus, the blog will be a forum for many other things related to enjoying the discussion. If you have any suggestions for the blog, Falcons events, questions, comments or anything related you’d like to hear, feel free to send emails to firstname.lastname@example.org at any time.
Every fan’s opinion is welcome and encouraged. As with other AJC blogs, the only stipulation is to keep it respectful. Disagreements, arguments, and even conflicts are completely welcomed and even encouraged, but keep it in a civilized manner and tone. Mudslinging, personal attacks, and distractions need not apply. The Atlanta Falcons themselves will, of course, be a main focus, but not the sole topic. We’ll discuss other issues regarding the entire fan experience such as tailgating, recipes, game day rituals and attire, and anything else associated with watching our Beloved ‘Birds and the NFL.
And if you followed our previous Falcons fan blog, you can also find archival postings from The Bird Babe right here at The Bird Cage.
Born and raised in Northwest Georgia, graduated from The University of Georgia, and am a teacher in the Metro Atlanta area. Grew up a Falcons fan watching greats Steve Bartkowski, Mike Kenn, Billy “Whiteshoes” Johnson, & Jessie Tuggle. Huge homer for all Atlanta sports teams, especially the Falcons. Married a beautiful, amazing Tennessee graduate (go figure) and have a wonderful gift of a son who will be torn between UGA and Tennessee growing up. But we’re all Falcons fans who reside in Dekalb County, and are current season-ticket holders. Coached middle school football for 4 years and am a fanatic for all things Falcons Football. I aspire to be like the Master of Grilling Bobby Flay in my off time and also have an unhealthy habit for Madden on PS2 (yes, still on the old-school console). There’s a little more information about me, if you’re interested, in the About D3 Section at top right section near the RSS Feed.
This will be a ton of fun as we engage in our new Falcons forum. If you enjoy the Bird Cage, than go to the RSS (Really Simple Syndication) Feed at the top right where it automatically updates any new postings. Jump in the Bird Cage and cut loose!
Favorite Jersey Combination
One of the most heated topics that fans deeply care about and are extremely divided on…….what jerseys the Falcons wear on Sundays. Overall, the new uniforms that were introduced in 2003 seemed to have been fairly well received. But there is some serious issues about the new unis with loyal Falcons fans who love the old jerseys, helmets, and logo.
The team entered the NFL with red helmets including a black Falcon logo. The middle of the helmet had a black stripe surrounded 2 gold stripes and 2 white stripes. Rumor has it that this was done to include the UGA and Georgia Tech fans in the equation. The gold stripes were later taken out. They wore white pants with either white or black jerseys. The black jerseys were later changed to red and the pants were switched from white to silver.
The next change involved switching the helmets from red to black, and the jerseys went back to white and black with red numbers. The big change, of course, came when the home team got a modern upgrade. It definitely followed the trend of the league that the Denver Broncos started back in 1997, with a move to a more sheik, current look. The uniforms were one thing, but many fans were completely upset about the changed, old-school logo.
Currently, the Falcons have a few options when they suit up:
Their main uniforms for home games are red jerseys with white pants, which seems to be somewhat more consistent with other teams throughout the NFL, keeping the base color jersey and white pants.
One alternate uniform has red jerseys and black pants (which weren’t seen last year, but became one of the more popular combinations in the last couple of years).
Another alternate is all black, jerseys and pants (one that riles up many fans). Many think the black uniforms can add an extra touch of toughness in the right setting, as it did in the big NFC South matchup against the Carolina Panthers in the Terrordome. It surely worked better for the Falcons than it did for UGA vs Alabama
Not many options here.
All white, jerseys and pants
White jerseys with black pants
And of course the old-school unis:
Red Helmets, White Jerseys, Silver Pants
Red Helmets on Red Jerseys
Black Jerseys with Silver Pants
So what’s your favorite uniform of all time? What uniform combination do you like the best for the Falcons to wear on a consistent basis?
Word is that the Falcons will don the original 1966 throwbacks, which looks to be a lot of fun. Any desire to see any different uniform combinations this year?
How about red pants? And All Red at home, similar to All Black or the old school red helmet, red jersey, red pants?
Let’s hear it Bird Cage, here’s your time to vent on everything Atlanta Falcons jerseys………….
