Welcome to the Bird Cage!

elcome to the New Falcon fans’ Bird Cage blog!

(((((Update)))))For those of you that have already seen this blog posting, there are two new posts over under the Recent Posts Column) on the right hand side >>>>>

I’m Dawson Devitt (handle name: D3) and I’ll be moderating AJC.com’s new Bird Cage, a blog devoted solely for Falcons fans. We’ll be discussing Everything Atlanta Falcons Football, from the perspective of you, the fan. This will be a great place for Falcons and other NFL fans to come and discuss, analyze, and breakdown all things that interest the fanatics that surround our hometown Atlanta Falcons. We’ll talk about the team, the plays, the transactions, the games and everything about the Falcons, but we’ll also be talking about best tailgating areas, best sports bars to watch away games, game day recipes, and all things associated with the entire experience of being a Falcon fan.

My involvement in The Bird Cage stems from being part of a fan forum community through the Falcons beat blog by D.Orlando Ledbetter. The enjoyment started with a thirst for everything Falcons football on the AJC.com website, and quickly developed into a fun hobby that has since become an almost addiction. In an era of social networking sites surging popularity, The Bird Cage became a community forum based around talking Falcons, football, and anything we desired. We welcome you to join in the entertaining arena.

Since this is a blog devoted solely to the fan’s perspective, all themes, ideas, and suggestions are welcome regarding Falcons football and the NFL at large. Even though the Falcons will be the main focus, the blog will be a forum for many other things related to enjoying the discussion. If you have any suggestions for the blog, Falcons events, questions, comments or anything related you’d like to hear, feel free to send emails to dawsondevitt@gmail.com at any time.

Every fan’s opinion is welcome and encouraged. As with other AJC blogs, the only stipulation is to keep it respectful. Disagreements, arguments, and even conflicts are completely welcomed and even encouraged, but keep it in a civilized manner and tone. Mudslinging, personal attacks, and distractions need not apply. The Atlanta Falcons themselves will, of course, be a main focus, but not the sole topic. We’ll discuss other issues regarding the entire fan experience such as tailgating, recipes, game day rituals and attire, and anything else associated with watching our Beloved ‘Birds and the NFL.

And if you followed our previous Falcons fan blog, you can also find archival postings from The Bird Babe right here at The Bird Cage.

Dawson Devitt’s Very Brief Bio

Born and raised in Northwest Georgia, graduated from The University of Georgia, and am a teacher in the Metro Atlanta area. Grew up a Falcons fan watching greats Steve Bartkowski, Mike Kenn, Billy “Whiteshoes” Johnson, & Jessie Tuggle. Huge homer for all Atlanta sports teams, especially the Falcons. Married a beautiful, amazing Tennessee graduate (go figure) and have a wonderful gift of a son who will be torn between UGA and Tennessee growing up. But we’re all Falcons fans who reside in Dekalb County, and are current season-ticket holders. Coached middle school football for 4 years and am a fanatic for all things Falcons Football. I aspire to be like the Master of Grilling Bobby Flay in my off time and also have an unhealthy habit for Madden on PS2 (yes, still on the old-school console). There’s a little more information about me, if you’re interested, in the About D3 Section at top right section near the RSS Feed.

This will be a ton of fun as we engage in our new Falcons forum. If you enjoy the Bird Cage, than go to the RSS (Really Simple Syndication) Feed at the top right where it automatically updates any new postings. Jump in the Bird Cage and cut loose!

Favorite Jersey Combination

One of the most heated topics that fans deeply care about and are extremely divided on…….what jerseys the Falcons wear on Sundays. Overall, the new uniforms that were introduced in 2003 seemed to have been fairly well received. But there is some serious issues about the new unis with loyal Falcons fans who love the old jerseys, helmets, and logo.

The team entered the NFL with red helmets including a black Falcon logo. The middle of the helmet had a black stripe surrounded 2 gold stripes and 2 white stripes. Rumor has it that this was done to include the UGA and Georgia Tech fans in the equation. The gold stripes were later taken out. They wore white pants with either white or black jerseys. The black jerseys were later changed to red and the pants were switched from white to silver.

The next change involved switching the helmets from red to black, and the jerseys went back to white and black with red numbers. The big change, of course, came when the home team got a modern upgrade. It definitely followed the trend of the league that the Denver Broncos started back in 1997, with a move to a more sheik, current look. The uniforms were one thing, but many fans were completely upset about the changed, old-school logo.

Currently, the Falcons have a few options when they suit up:
Home Uniforms

Their main uniforms for home games are red jerseys with white pants, which seems to be somewhat more consistent with other teams throughout the NFL, keeping the base color jersey and white pants.

One alternate uniform has red jerseys and black pants (which weren’t seen last year, but became one of the more popular combinations in the last couple of years).

Another alternate is all black, jerseys and pants (one that riles up many fans). Many think the black uniforms can add an extra touch of toughness in the right setting, as it did in the big NFC South matchup against the Carolina Panthers in the Terrordome. It surely worked better for the Falcons than it did for UGA vs Alabama

Road Uniforms
Not many options here.
All white, jerseys and pants
White jerseys with black pants

And of course the old-school unis:
1966 Throwbacks
Red Helmets, White Jerseys, Silver Pants

Red Helmets on Red Jerseys
Black Jerseys with Silver Pants

So what’s your favorite uniform of all time? What uniform combination do you like the best for the Falcons to wear on a consistent basis?

Word is that the Falcons will don the original 1966 throwbacks, which looks to be a lot of fun. Any desire to see any different uniform combinations this year?

How about red pants? And All Red at home, similar to All Black or the old school red helmet, red jersey, red pants?

Let’s hear it Bird Cage, here’s your time to vent on everything Atlanta Falcons jerseys………….

We’re long overdue for a uniform overall. The FUBU knockoffs hearken us back to a time this franchise really needs to forget, anyhow; nothing wrong w/the updated logo (except it’s a tad too big on the helmet, I think), but the numeric font – my opinion – should go back to a traditional block and the sleeves should have the same color as the rest of the jersey. I could see some piping along the sides, sleeves and collar (red piping on black jersey with white numbers outlined in red would look nice, as would black piping on a similar red jersey), but other than that, the goofy numeric font and alternately colored sleeves should be ditched. We all know why we went to the current design, and now it’s time to turn the page.

D3, guess I’m first. I’m glad we finally have a place to come and see other Falcon fans comment on our favorite team. I’m going to vote for the red and black combo but the old school ones are pretty cool on Madden. Keep up the good work. I’ll check later. Thanks.

Nice blog.
I like the new unis. For some reason, when I see it live, the red w/black doesn’t do if for me, even though conceptually, I thought it was hot. Kinda like seeing something on a commercial, then when you buy it, it wasn’t all that.

I have a suggestion for futuer blog: I know it is waaaaaaaaaaaay early and the ‘09 season hasn’t kicked off, but I have my ‘09 Lindy’s College Football Preview at my side, just thinking about who might be a good selection for the Falcons for 2010, based on projected needs. right now, OL and DT depth might be paramount . I would liek some others thoughts

D3, This is wonderful news. We cannot get enough Falcons talk. Speaking of uniforms, I do sorely miss the old red helmets. I wish all the NFL teams would wear throwbacks more often.

Thanks for a place to gather and chat about our Falcons! I agree with the idea of getting rid of the separate color on the sleeves. I prefer the red jersey with the white pants, but I think the all black for really important/big rival games is pretty cool for added “drama.” I am so ready for the season to begin.

I have one gripe with the home unis. They should wear black socks instead of the red ones. Check out the Ravens and Broncos color schemes. They are similar to ours in that they have a dark helmet with the dominant color scheme jersey. The difference with them is they wear socks that match their helmet as opposed to mathing their jersey. Just a thought.

I’m 41 years old and I’m a die hard Falcons fan and have been since I was 6 years old. This is one of the best blog posts I’ve seen in a while. I’m in the midst of working on changing careers from a software salesman to School teacher/coach. I know it doesn’t pay as much but this is something I’ve always wanted to do.

I look forward to reading more blog articles from the bird cage and I can’t wait til our first pre-season game on August 15th with Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions!

Uniforms – well I’ve seen them all in person and my favorite is the red jersey with the black pants. I do like the old logo but I’m not in love with it. I’m also not in love with the new logo as well. I would like to see a falcon draped around the helmet such as Seattle or Philly or something that resembles a whole bird as oppose to a weird profile of a bird that really doesn’t look all that much like a bird. Any comments?

New season ticket holder this year, my God the days are passing painfully slow. Can’t they start camp early?:-)
Wasn’t a huge fan of the uniform change a few years ago, but they’ve slowly grown on me. What I don’t like are the color “squares” near the armpits, guess I’d rather have the jerseys all one color.
Can’t wait for this year-let’s end the “never having back to back winning seasons”!!!
Go Birds!

It is good to see so many familiar postings. I see some new names too. I hope everyone is well and I hope each of you has had much summer fun. Had to go away for awhile for a big project at work. So much enthusiasm still here and time is ticking!

tick, tick…

I am greatly anticipating the day when the radio and TV heads across the nation all sound off in unison…”ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL!” The weekdays will go by so much better when I have a thousand pieces of stats to chew on and digest from the Sunday before. And before that, we have a very exciting preseason to witness. Who goes, who stays (TBrown). I am pumped to see our D line in action, with the new kids vs the vets (and JA).

Like a pig in…his element! I can’t wait!

Unca’, where is it? I looked in the Falcons main and the blog section and couldn’t see it.

i liked the new uniform designs from the start…i sat there for years watching every other team except for the Falcons, Minnesota, and Detroit wear the same tired uniforms. when the falcons changed, i was satisfied-maybe if the got new uniforms it would bring a new attitude to the team( it took more than that, but we finally see the end product)…

I really like the red jersey with the black pants. I think alltime fav combo would be red helmet, black jersey and gray pants. I like the new logo, so much, that i got it inked back in 05′. Ive followed the birds since the late 80’s so wanted to show how much of a diehard that i am! Looking forward to the new blog this season, the previous got out of control and all the comments ended up having something to do with Vick, even if that wasnt the topic.

Ron – It defintely seemed to be a move towards that trend the Bronco’s started with the more sheik look. Those old school 1966 black unis and red helmets are sharp.

knievel – Feel free to throw some Dawg talk out there as well. We got a plethora of Georgia boys to talk about: DJ Shockley, Thomas Brown, and Tony Gilbert.

qpzmide – Grew up in Calhoun and moved to Rome for high school. Got a little flavor of both. Great times.

mryan – I’m right with you on that. I think I might be one of the few, but I really liked the red jersey, black pants combo. Guess Coach Smith and Co. didn’t as much. Can’t wait for the new Madden.

Blindog – This should be the year we put that stupid @ curse to rest.

Nookah – My man, glad you made it over. This blog is just a culmination of what we started a long time ago. This should be a TON of fun.

Collin – Thanks a bunch, look forward to seeing you in the Bird Cage.

john v – ebay?

Alex – Thanks for the props. Training camp is now less than 9 days away and we just inked William Moore. Be here soon.

Birdfan – Yeah, I love the all black uni’s as well. Actually, one of my favorite jersey combos.

Rockpreston – Black socks might actually make a huge difference.

Biker Dude – Excellent to have you here in the Bird Cage. Got a ton of stuff ready to roll for you in the coming weeks and months with training camp starting back and that “big” game against Stafford.

Lil’ Dave – Thanks brother. Haven’t seen you in a while and now I know why. What’s the deal with blocking websites at work? It’s not like it decrease productivity or anything.

Sarah B. – On your point of Team DEF. We always draft individual players on DEF to make it more interesting and more fun. Thanks for the ups.

Chris – Less than 9 days. The Braves are hot right now, maybe that’ll get us through. Wait……..nope.

JohnWayne – Long time my friend. The Jamaal Anderson discussion should light some fires.

I like the new uniforms, but would like the new logo on red helmets with black jerseys instead. No red-red or black-black combos – looks like Arena League or high school! BTW, I think you meant “chic” instead of “sheik” – that would definitely be a different look!

Make it a TRUE throwback and go with the 66’s. Does anybody know which game the throwbacks will be worn (hopefully we’ll have throwbacks on when we humiliate the 49er’s)?

I will alway remember the first home game during the Deion/Glanville days when they switched to all black. The crowd was already hot and then the music started. It was of course “Back in Black” by AC/DC and it was LOUD!

Great uniform, and yes it does make us look meaner. Especially the defensive linemen. They looked downright evil coming at the opposing (and wide-eyed) quarterback.

The current uniforms stink. Go back to ‘66. I’ve been saying for the last 5 years they should go back to their roots. The Tommy Nobis uniform, that’s a classic, right there with the cowboys, steelers, giants and jets. Now if the Vikings could get a clue… Back to ‘66!!!

The black helmets were a Jerry Glanville gimmick to make the Falcons look like Raiders. Lose ‘em like that loser of a coach. Bring back the red. Any Glanville touch should be re-touched.

I actually like the ‘original’ and the ‘Bartkowski era’ uniforms. Just give them 2K updates. The current unis with those v-shaped/different color sleeves are UGLEEEEEE and look wussie-fied! And those weird v shapes on pants gotta go.

As “Another Falcon Chick” said recently: TOO MANY FASHIONISTAS. The only Runway I want to see is Jerious or “HDTV” running ‘way down the field. This is F-O-O-T-BA-L-L Can we please just have some Xs & Os?

BTW, I’m so glad you’re taking over from Bird Babe. I read the fan posts, but usually not the forum lead. One slight “fashion” criticism in your message back to Ron: Sheik is incorrect both in pronunciation and usage: the word is chic. Sheik only references some Middle Eastern men and is pronounced shake. I did get a good laugh picturing the Broncos in keffiyahs rather than helmets, but maybe that is Josh McDaniels’ inscrutable plan…

It’s not so much the colors that are skewed but all the patterns within patterns that the current uni’s have that suck. They look like circus outfits. Sometimes less is more, and the current uni’s really need less.
