“Dave is a very bright, adept and organized talent evaluator,” Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said. “He has a very sound understanding of team building and player acquisition. Dave has been an integral member of our scouting department and has demonstrated excellent leadership as the director of college scouting and as the director of player personnel. I have complete confidence in Dave, and I know that he will excel in his new role as the general manager of the Jacksonville Jaguars.”

Caldwell interviewed with the Jaguars three times. He was also had two interviews with the New York Jets for the same position.

Caldwell will replace Gene Smith and have to make a decision on head coach Mike Mularkey.

Caldwell was in his first season as the Falcons director of player personnel in 2012. He oversaw both the college and pro scouting efforts and worked closely Dimitroff. Caldwell also handled the day-to-day analysis and evaluation of the Falcons current roster while aiding in the research on how to acquire future free agents.

Prior to being promoted by the Falcons, he spent the previous four seasons with the Falcons as the director of college scouting overseeing Atlanta’s college area and regional scouts. He also assimilated the information he received and presented it to Dimitroff with a goal of making the NFL draft as effective as possible. Caldwell was also responsible for scouting the top talent in the country.

Caldwell has served in the NFL for 15 years, 10 of which came with the Indianapolis Colts. He’s also worked with the Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers.

Caldwell is a graduate of John Carroll University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Finance/Business Administration.

He was a two-year letterman as an outside linebacker helping the Blue Streaks to an Ohio Athletic Conference title in 1994. A native of Buffalo, New York, Caldwell and his wife, Joelle, have one son, David Michael II.

Always hate to lose pieces of our success but you gotta wish him the best, at least against all other than the Falcons, right?

@ 78dawg: good riddance?? are you high? division champs in 2 of the last 3 yrs, and you just want to run this guy out of town? clearly the men that have been in the front office for the last five years (emery, snead, now caldwell; all GMs now) have been doing something right. how about showing a little gratitude. people like you are exactly why this town gets a bad rap.

Blank has created an atmosphere of high expectations/rewards. I doubt we’ll have a shortage of applicants for the newly created openings since Flowery Branch has become an attractive destination for up & coming talent. Expect more poaching of our guys as our winning ways continue…..

@just win. Well said. I don’t know where these clowns that say they are fans of the team come from. We have one of the most explosive offensive teams in the league and we have people bashing the guys that put it together. Unbelievable. On a better note do you think TD asks Pioli to join the team?

Why would Caldwell leave to take a demotion?

Best of Luck David Caldwell in Jax….Thanks for all you did to help Falcons become a winner!
Would love to see TD hire Pioli if he would accept job to join the staff.

When I read the headline I thought to myself “great Rich McKay is moving on”. Much to my surprise…a letdown for sure.

@keeping it real: a demotion? how quick you are to forget the dire straits this franchise was in when TD took this job. i imagine snobs like you would have said the exact same thing about the bright, young exec leaving one of the NFL’s top teams (NE) to preside over a complete abortion (ATL). you forget how quickly things can turn around in this league when the right people are making the decisions. as for Pioli, man, i hope not… seems like that would be an unnecessary distraction, no?

Taking your side on this one against “just win” & “really”. We have wins. Better than in our history but picking good FAs is much easier than draft choices. Ray Edwards, Dunta good but any $10 million CB will be. We’ve drafted several OL under TD, how’s that working. We lost Dahl & he gets only 4 mil/yr. Hawley, Johnson, Konz, Baker, Holmes, & Reynolds.
Defense is a little shaky but Nolan is using them wisely. Still not much pass rush. I understand these guys being happy with the best five years we have ever had but you & I are the types that love what we have but would try to make it better if possible. I think it can be.

Teams are starting to come after our front office and coaches on a yearly basis. Unfortunately, this is what happens when you become one of the NFL “Model” teams like the NE Patriots have been over the last decade. Other teams take your guys so they can model their team after ours. This means we are doing something right.
