Divine intervention: Lord tells Roddy White to play vs. Giants

Roddy White, slowed by a sore knee, didn’t practice all week, but started against the Giants and caught two passes for 16 yards.

“When I woke up this morning, the good Lord told me, ‘Roddy, you can go out there and play today,’” White said. “So that’s what I did.”

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan leaned more on wide receiver Julio Jones, who finished with six catches for 74 yards and two touchdowns.

Before the game, some in the media dredged up some White quotes from September, when he said he thought the Falcons’ receivers were better than the Giants duo of Hakeem Nicks (three catches, 40 yards on Sunday) and Victor Cruz (three catches, 15 yards).

“When I talked about me and Julio and us being the best wide receivers in the league, that’s how I feel, no matter who we play against or who’s on the other side,” White said. “I don’t even guard those guys. That’s putting a lot of (pressure) on our DBs, who did an excellent job today.

“The comments I make are just what I believe in and what I see and what I think we’re capable of doing. As long as we continue to be who we are and play at a high level, we’ll be just fine.”

Coverage unit: Giants kickoff returner Dave Wilson had 227 yards on kickoff returns last week against New Orleans.

The Falcons held him to 66 yards on three returns. He brought Matt Bosher’s opening kickoff out of the end zone from 6 yards deep and was stopped by Cliff Matthews at the 13-yard line.

“They had maybe one other return that they got out to the 20-yard line,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said.

Etc.: The Falcons posted their first shutout since a 24-0 win over Oakland on Nov. 2, 2009. It was their first shutout at home since beating Carolina 30-0 on Oct. 20, 2002. … Under Smith, the Falcons are 20-3 in games following losses, including a 2-0 record this season. Dating back to 2009, the Falcons have won 12 straight games coming off of a loss. … It was Eli Manning’s first career shutout and was the first time since December 1996 that the Giants have been shutout in the regular season.

I am rolling w/ the DOL.

Any indication on what the plan is for playoff prep?
DOL (or MC) reported a couple of weeks ago that Coach Smith wants to win every game. Since the Falcons will have the BYE, I doubt if he wants the starters to get nearly 2 weeks away from game action. I can see starters playing time similar to the 3rd o 4th pre-season game.

Did yhou see Rodney Harrison get defiant and defensive when Dan Patrick reminded of his quote last week about “nobody being afraid of the Atlanta Falcons?”

He owned up to it, but it seems remarkably pompous and self-absorbed for him to say that it shouldn’t take his commentary to fire up the Falcons team ….. as if he had something to do with it.

Why couldn’t it just have been the coaching staff and the veterans on the team owning up to last weeks’ stinker and wanting to do better than the showing @ CAR?

I wonder if it was divine intervention when Roddy lost his cell phone and twitter account?

There is another important category that’s not listed here: Class, yes class ya’ll. Did ya’ll see what the Falcons did on the last first down with minutes to go in their opponents red zone? They took a knee and it showed respect for the Giants-whereas, the Falcons could’ve gone for a play and humiliated the Giants, but they didn’t. That’s call getting an “A” in category “Class”. New England is a super team, but would have tried to run off many points as possible in that same situation. Coach Smith said at the end of the game-”we might see these guys again” in the playoffs. We do not need to fuel any team’s fire, especially not at this time. We just need to focus on staying hot and keeping the momentum going. This game was so crucial to the Falcons. The win confirmed to me-that most everyone knows: that the Falcons-have got the talent-no question. It’s just that they haven’t shown in games, the mental and physicality in all three phases at the same time in all quarters to dominate like they did. This is the type of game that would make Parcells and Madden proud. The challenge is to use this game as a baseline to playing up to this capacity for all their remaining regular season games and then-up the intensity and dominate to win playoff games on the road to getting in and winning the Lombardi trophy in January 2013-God willing.

The biggest difference with Atlanta is the DB’s and Safeties have bought into Dick Nolans system and the defense overall is experienced and much faster than in the past.Offensively Coordinator Dirk Coetter has the ball all over the place and not just locked in on Micheal Turner you must defend the whole field and that’s where this team is ready to go for the Lombardi Trophy….
