CHARLOTTE – Splat!
That was the sound of the NFC South champion Falcons falling flat on their faces against the last-place Carolina Panthers Sunday at Bank of America Stadium.
The Panthers, behind a strong showing from quarterback Cam Newton, defeated the Falcons 30-20 and slowed down Atlanta’s march to claiming the NFC’s top seed.
The Panthers jumped out to a 23-0 early third quarter lead and held on to improve to 4-9, while the Falcons slipped to 11-2.
“They were much better than us today,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “They beat us in all three phases. We couldn’t sustain drives on third down offensively. We couldn’t even come close to getting them off the field on third downs (defensively).”
The Falcons needed a win and bizarre trifecta of other losses to claim the top seed for the playoffs, which comes with a bye and home-field advantage throughout.

The Falcons are still ahead of San Francisco (9-3-1) and Green Bay (8-4, before playing Detroit on Sunday night). They have a 1 ½ lead over the 49ers with three games to play.
The Falcons want to put this stinker of game behind them quickly.
“It better be a bump in the road if we are the team we think we are,” tight end Tony Gonzalez said.
In recent years, the hottest team in December has gone on to enjoy post-season success.
The Falcons have been eliminated in their first game of the playoffs in three of the past four season.
They wanted to start the fourth-quarter of the regular-season by building some momentum into the playoffs.
With the New York Giants up next, they could end up stumbling into the playoffs.
“I can hear them right now,” Gonzalez said. “They are getting off the band wagon. They are jumping off.
“From looking at our history, a lot of people are going to say, ‘see I told you.’ But we are a good football team. There is no doubt about it. We are going to play better. …We are going to be back to playing the way we have been playing.”
Newton, of Fulton County’s Westlake High and Auburn, completed 23 of 35 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns. He had a passer rating of 110.1. Newton also rushed nine times for 116 yards, including a 72-yard touchdown.
“You’ve got to take your hat off to him,” Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon said. “It was his day.”
There was a lot of talk before the game from the Panthers.
They said they were disrespected by Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, who was seen on Fox television cameras telling the Panthers to “get the (bleep) off our field” after the Falcons pulled out a 30-28 win on Sept. 30 at the Georgia Dome.
Carolina defensive end Greg Hardy also said the Panthers were better than the Falcons. The Falcons seemed amused by all of the chatter.
“They’ve been fired up all week,” Gonzalez said. “We heard it all week and they came out and got after us.”
Carolina jumped out to a 16-0 halftime lead.
Here last season, the Falcons were down by 16 at the half, but rallied to win.
Not this time.
Newton broke loose on a read-option run and scampered 72 yards. Graham Gano’s extra point made it 23-0 with 11:01 left in the third quarter.
The Falcons came back with two touchdowns, but after Roddy White’s two-point conversion catch was ruled incomplete, the rally died.
The Panthers answered when DeAngelo Williams scored from 53 yards out on a screen pass to make it 30-13 with 4:11 to play
The Falcons added a 1-yard touchdown run by Michael Turner for the final 30-20 margin.
“I like the way we responded in the second half if you’re looking for the silver lining,” Gonzalez said.
The Falcons had not played since beating New Orleans 23-13 on Nov. 29.
“I’m a little disappointed with the way we came out,” Gonzalez said. “There is no excuse for that.”
Smith felt the team had a good week of practice and made no excuses for them coming out flat against a feisty Carolina squad.
“They played well and we didn’t play up to our standard,” Smith said.

I fell asleep during the first half..no big deal as the Birds were also sleepin..I mean 3 possessions all half and the defense had ZERO pass rush.. Cam or a high schooler couldve picked apart the secondary with such a pitful D Line performance.. When I awoke, ther ewas Ryan, either pressured or runnin for his life.. I thought we had drafted some O linemen… Guess they were MIA//Baker gets worse everfy game Vs mediocre D linemen.. He needs to be replaced and what happened to ballhawk Wm Moore on that 1st Carolina TD to their tight end..forgort his name as hes not even among the elite Tight ends
Overall a Misaeable efoort, as if they’re playin out the string and hopin for home field and another playoff gift, like the 2004 victory over a poor Rams team..
If this game is indicative of a team peaking at playoff time, the the Panthers are ready for the post season
Evidently, the Falcons are NOT BIG CHANGES REQUIRED otherwise one n done again

With a good QB, given all the weapons the Falcos have, they should’ve won every game they’ve played this year by no less than 10 points. There are way too many weapons on Atlanta’s team for them to perform like they did today and the blame is 99% due to Ryan. it must be frustrating for Julio Jones and Roddy White to play for a guy like Ryan. i can see it in their eyes and facial expression every game. they just cant express it publicly. Ryan has passed his prime. His prime was the first game of his NFL career. His performance has been declining since.
Some people might want to blame the defense but I thought the defense played well with the offense (Matt Ryan) forcing them to play 25 of 30 minutes in the first half.

No excuses, bad game. Now, here is the reality, we got out-worked, out-played…All 4 phases!
But, here is the inside story-this game DID NOT matter. The Falcons didn’t show, trap game? Maybe, but this was more of a psychological no-show. The problem lies in next week, if we get smacked, then we are done… If we show and play Falcons football, Carolina is just a hiccup…Earn your paycheck next week birds, Vacation is over!

Well, I expected this… Does anyone else get the sense that the horses are being pulled back? You don’t reveal your playbook to a team going nowhere (sorry, Carry-On-Lina)… There is no grudge match worthy of losing the first-round bye (which will come) or division game (we own it) worth giving it to the first team we play in game one Divisionals in Atlanta… This is just another sign that rankings (this is not the BCS) or stats (no team wins awards for the higher records – just ask the 16-0 Pats)… The post season is all and they will be ready….

All those still on the Falcons bandwagon are setting yourselves up for another major letdown and disappointment. I was with you on the Braves wagon and the DAWGS wagon but never jumped on the Falcon’s. You may want to jump off now to save yourself some grief. However if you are into misery and a glutton for punishment just stay on it. No way does this Falcons team get any further than one game into the playoffs. I agree 100% Sam, get rid of Dunta!! The Falcons wasted all that money on him!!! Oh, on free agents,,,Turner is a bust,,, furthermore A. Peterson would not gain 10 yards with our offensive line…my point is….we need a new left tackle because Baker is is a BUST!! But I digress, as I stated earlier, this was all about home field advantage and we could not beat the lowly Panthers!! All we had to do was go 2-2 the last 4 games and boom, home field advantage but the way it looks now is the Falcons have put added pressure on themselves because who do we have to play,,,,Giants here,,,Lions there,,,and I have not mentioned Tampa is here!!! Geez, I am so jacked up about the Falcons losing today……………………..

Matty Meltdown, and the Falcons want respect. No wonder nobody takes them serious, they have been lucky all year, the time has come, we lose to 2 more games, and then we lose again in the first playoff. Here comes the same old Falcons we have seen in the past……If you want respect, you have to earn it. Get rid of Turner, I am 65 years old and I could get to the line quicker than he could, then you would have to call 911 for me, but at least I proved a point….

I have watched the Falcons for most of the last 40 years and I have seen them win the big ones and lose to the teams they should beat for the past 40 years. Today was no surprise. I want them to win big in the playoffs but, if I had to bet my pay check, I would bet on them going out in the first round. Matty is cool in the regular season – for the most part – but comes unglued when it is time for the best to step up (see Brees, Manning, and Rodgers). I think Matty may have gotten them as far as he can.

Got to be the worst first half of football I have ever witnessed by a team, much less one that is looking to go to the Super Bowl. Ryan has not played well in the last 5 games. He has gotten progressively worse. He peaked about a third of the way through the season. He needs to shut his mouth and be a leader, cause he just got punched in the mouth by Carolina. I am all for trading him for a rookie in the draft if we lose in the first round again, cause he is a pansy ass.

I see another one and done in playoffs.
TD did not do anything to improve O-line. Ryan does not have time too throw football with this line. Everyone wants too blame running backs and QB. Blame for failure of our offense is in offense line and I do not want too leave out the OC . Dirk shows why he had the 32nd ranked offense last year.I do not see him as a improvement over MM. At least MM could have offense run football.
The reason falcons have won eleven games this year( Mike Nolan).
I see what the news media sees. Another failed playoff for falcons!!!!!!!!!!!
TD needs to draft a first round offense lineman.McClure is a has been. Baker is to weak, Konz is playing out of position,Only offense limeman that could play on a good o-line is Claybo and Blaylock.

this was the most embarrising loss since the debacle with the giants last year. I have a feeling this is what we can expect in the future. If i would have traveled to charlotte to watch my falcons today, i would demand a refund from Arthur Blank. The Falcons did not show up at all in the first half and then looked like a bunch of losers during the last 6 minutes of the game.
Start looking for a good running back to draft next year. Turner is done and rogers is to small to be the main back!

Defense was held by Carolina all day long which is not to say the falcons deserved a win today. Bad calls, no holding calls (last scam td there was bigtine holding), and waiting until down 23 points to play and that was that. I wish the ajc sports writers would really tell the falcons what we fans think of them…one and done and not very good…and we are not believers…

Longtimefan must not know the falcons much. The problem is that the falcons are playing as if they have not learned the lessons of consistent play and shining down the stretch. I have seen falcons teams that scrapped to win 9 or 10 games give us more confidence than these duds. No excitement lately, no killer instinct and a good record only because we have played the easiest schedule of all so called contenders….

Ok, here’s my observation on this pathetic loss to a 3-9 team. It’s back to the drawing board with our run defense. We were shredded over and over again. Don’t know whether it was our defensive alignments or execution, but when the Panthers called a !running play it was as if our linebackers and front four were thinking it was a pass and were completely out of place to make a tackle. They had to have close to 200 yards on the ground, right? One pathetic turning point play was when we had Newton for a loss in the backfield and he somehow got away for about a 20 yard gain! On offense, the Turner experiment up the middle has GOT to come to an end! It is a wasted play. Our play calling is still way too conservative! Ryan did not have a stellar game by any stretch of the imagination, and the one interception he did throw was a bad one! He needs to go deep more often and I don’t think it’s because he doesn’t have time……he’s just afraid to pull the trigger. He’s a tad too bit conservative for me. Heck, if he throws a deep one and it get’s picked off, it’s just as good as a punt, which is what we do anyway giving the ball to Turner! I’m watching the Giants right now and their secondary is as poor as it gets. We should score 30 points on them next week at home! Frankly, we need to pass more to set up the run, not the other way around!

I can’t remember watching a more poorly called (game plan) game as this one today. I’m pretty sure the the word retarded fits the bill, as a description of our offensive coordinator. This dumb*ss needs to find another line of work. The Double R – Double P (run, run, pass, punt) offensive just doesn’t work. Lose Turner and all the lip-beating DB’s who think that after they tackle someone, they should be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Sit the f**k down and shut up! It’s one thing to get beat by a better team, but to lose with arrogance is disgraceful. To Matt, don’t listen to King Idiot up in the booth, please call whatever play you believe will work and for God’s sake, throw the ball to Gonzalez more than five or six times per game. Those who want to fire Smith haven’t been fans too long. Remember the firing of Leeman Bennett because the team had “plateaued”? The years that followed: 7-9, 4-12, 4-12, 7-8-1, 3-12, 5-11, 3-13, 5-11 and then finally, 9 years later, a winning record 10-6. It took Coach Reeves almost 7 seasons to get the franchise record for wins that Smith just broke in 4+. Having said that, the team was not prepared today. Ryan is working through the worst slump of his career. Coaches have to figure out a way to right the ship and as I type, their next opponent just scored their 42nd point even if they’re only playing the Aints.

I’m not buying the “Falcons didn’t care about this game; we’ve already got home field” argument. This team played today like it has all year..INCONSISTENTLY. I’ve watched every game, and they simply don’t pass the eyeball test. They might be 11-2 on paper, but their about 8-5 base on the ol’ eyeball. I guarantee you any playoff team out there would LOVE to draw the Falcons.
Yeah, at this point, the only thing that really matters is January. But this is the time of year when the contenders play their best ball and the pretenders wet their pants. And if this is the team that shows up, it’s one and done…again. We have no pass rush and we have no running game. Not a good recipe for winning in January.
And if we DO beat the Giants next week, you can bet your ass it’ll be a squeaker.

I know this is a favorite topic on Falcon’s message boards, but I would love to hear Mike Smith explain why Turner is still getting more carries than Rodgers. Over the last five games Rodgers has averaged over 5 yards a carry while Turner has averaged less than 3 yards per carry (that is even including Turner’s “breakout” game against the Aints last week where he averaged 7 yards per carry). On top of that, Rodgers is a much better receiver and can actually make defenders miss. Is Turner tenured? Does he have compromising photos of Mike Smith? Jeff, this should be the first question you and Mark ask at the press conference every week.

Coach Smith recently stated that there will be no more padded practices with hitting this year. They have had 11 and can get in a total of 14. Well, from the looks of today’s non aggressive showing, they need to “man up” and take advantage of the 3 more allotted hitting sessions. They played and coached like a disinterested flag football team today!

Don’t blame this loss entirely on the offense. The defense has some mighty big holes in the secondary and up the middle. John Abraham was held or double teamed on every play and the rest of the defense just seemed oblivious to what they were supposed to do. Matt is not the problem. The O line was not giving him enough time to even set up a lot of the time. I blame it on the offensive coordinator and his play calling. There were some calls on Carolina that should have been made and weren’t. Very badly managed and played game, not counting the refs bad calls in the 4th quarter.I hate to remind the Panthers, but I do believe we will be in the playoffs. This is just one game and I hope the Falcons have a very long memory when they play them next year. They are thugs, even their coach had to call them down.

I only watched the first half. I couldn’t stomach anymore. I don’t think Matt Ryan threw the ball further than 5 yards down field the entire first half and the vast majority of those were at the line of scrimmage or behind the line of scrimmage. What the hell is having Jones and White if your QB is to dang scared to throw the ball downfield? The O-Line is bad enough, but Mattie Not Ice is responsible for a good many of the sacks he takes. He takes way to much time to pass the ball. There is a young QB sitting on the bench that needs some practice. I think it’s time to give Matt a break and let this kid play. Just enough to give Matt a little rest mind you. Matt is looking kinda timid out there these days. I won’t even get started on that joke of a defense. Don’t have enough time to cover their incompetence. If there is such a thing as a sure thing, the Falcons will be out in first round.

To those who say it’s no big deal that the Falcons lost today, I say hogwash. The Panthers practically promised the Falcons a butt whipping today and the Falcons took it like they enjoyed it. I’ve never seen so much smirking and laughing by professional athletes while taking a pounding.
A real championship contender would have taken the Panther’s challenge and showed them why an 11-1 team is better than a 3-9 team. The Falcons are soft. They are not contenders and I’m tired of drinking the kool-aid. This team will be lucky if they get homefield for the playoffs and will be one and done again. The fans deserve better.

Really nothing more to add. It’s already been said. must ask this why did the Falcons resign Thomas Day-who-coo to another contract, this guy is a joje at free safety. The Falcons problems are they are just to non-disciplined on defense. If Day-who-coo had made his firts step a back pedal instead of running toward the line of scrimmage, thye TE would have never gotten behind him. Hell if him or D. Robinsn would locate and play the football instead of the man they might make some plays. Either way those are fundamental erros and should be corrected by coaching exspecially at this leve. Oh Bierman you got plated by slicing in on almost ever play. When you didpped in Cam went right the outside of you. Again this jus another sgn of a defense that is not iscipline nd does not play assignment football. To much one and one and jst out there doing what I want to do.

We need to start shopping for some fast, explosive running backs and some big, nasty offensive lineman. The offensive play calling was passive, uncreative, and non-member explosive. We should have more offensive plays being used this time of year. We will continue to loss pin this time year if the offensive continues to play passive and with no sense of urgency on each play. Matt Ryan played scared and indecisive. He showed no leadership in this loss. I hope we fix all of this NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

Same old…same old from Coach Smith and the Falcons. Matt Ryan is a good QB playing behind an average offensive line. The elite teams in the league (Giants, Packers, 49ers, Patriots, and Texans) know you beat the Falcons by pushing Todd McClure and Sam Baker into the backfield. This causes Matt Ryan to get happy feet and this also clogs up running lanes. Ryan does not have time to go through his reads and this is why he locks onto Tony and Roddy.
Bottom line is that we need better talent on the O-line and D-line. This is will not get fixed this season the Falcons organization already know this. We will make it to the playoffs and with luck on our side we might win a playoff game.

Who was it that said you can’t “fix” ugly? Man, the Falcons were as ugly as you can get yesterday. It has to be The Curse. How can a team with not only one, but TWO, 1000 yard gaining receivers by season’s end and a HOF tight end with 60 some odd catches for some 700 yards not score a single point in three quarters of football against a 3 and 9 last place team? That defies the laws of the universe, does it not? I’ll have to watch it again on the DVR and see how that happened. Moving forward the Falcons should game plan to put 40 points on the board in each and every game they play from here on out. Then hope that’s enough! At least take your shots and look like you are trying to win the game. If this is like “professional wrestling”, we are all wasting our time here. And if Dominique Franks fair catches one more punt inside the ten yard line I am going to stick my head inside an oven. Go Falcons.

what really pissed me off was Decoud smiling when he gave up the touchdown pass to the tight end in the first quarter. What the hell was there to smile about? You just got your ass handed to you by a tight end. Sometimes i really dont understand the mindset of this team. Whoever the gm is whats his name? didnt draft anyone or try tp improve the DL. They are small And built for the dome. But not all games are played in the dome.

Well, here’s the lead line from espn.com’s coverage of the game: “The Atlanta Falcons were back in playoff form on Sunday.”

On the bright side, if the Falcons can “eek” out at least one more win, it looks like they will get the bye game and the playoff home field advantage yet again! 49er’s have back to back away games coming up against New England and Seattle. Green Bay and Chicago play each other next Sunday at Soldier Field. So, one more win should be enough with the 1 and 1/2 game lead with three to go. Go Falcons.

Thanks for the whipping yesterday Panther Joey………..it was a wake up call. Now as for waking up you guys look set for a top 10 pick in the draft? LOL. See you next year celebrating 1st downs! Amazed me how Steve Smith, showboats on EVERY first down yet he calls out Sham Newton………darn Steve where you think he got all that showboating from? You guys handed us our hats yesterday after you knocked it off……….but we still NFC Champs and you still not going to the playoffs. Have a talk to the Olineman who had talks of Super Bowl. Tell him to enjoy that Madden game where Carolina still cant win……….hehehehehe. See you next year with a new coach and new scheme. Later kitty.

Did anyone else notice that when Hardy was telling the Falcons to get off their field, he only said it when none of the Falcons were around him, except the for our kicker. He was quiet as the other Falcons walked by him. Real tough guy.
