Each week during the season The Atlanta Journal-Constitution will conduct a question-and-answer session with a Falcons player about his off-field interests and activities. The intention is to give fans some insight into the players and a little sense of what makes them tick. This week we spoke with fullback Mike Cox.
By MICHAEL CUNNINGHAM
The Falcons released Cox during training camp in favor of Lousaka Polite, but re-signed Cox last month and cut Polite. The team made the move with the hope that Cox would help a lagging running game.
Cox talked to us about his off-field interests, including his love of movies.
Q: What do you like to do away from football?
A: I like to rest [laughs]. That’s my favorite thing. But actually, this last time away from football I coached some high school football with my two younger brothers and trying to get more involved with my youth group back home [in Pennsylvania]. But I’m a big movies guy. I go to movies every week. I have quite a collection, I think, like, 300 or 400 movies.
Q: What’s your favorite movie genre?
A: I like sports movies. “Rocky” is my favorite one. He’s a Pennsylvania guy, too. I’m a sports guy, and I enjoy those [kind of] movies.
Q: “Rocky” or “Rocky II”?
A: (The first) one is my favorite. And (number) four. But the original one (is the best).
Q: You’ve got to like the training montage in “Rocky IV” right?
A: Aw, the training montage is the best! With the Russian. You can’t beat the “Rocky IV” training montage.
Q: Any movies you’ve seen lately?
A: We just saw “Lawless” on DVD. We like that. I like Tom Hardy, the guy from “Warrior” and the Batman movie (“The Dark Knight Rises”). My wife is looking forward to Christmas, my gift to her is taking her to see “Les Miserables.”
Q: So you like Rocky. What else is in your top five sports movies?
A: “The Natural” is one I can watch all the time. That’s my favorite baseball movie. I like “Hoosiers.” I’m a classics guy. I was watching that the other day; it was on, and I couldn’t turn it off. “Rudy” made me become a Notre Dame fan a little bit when I was little. You can’t go wrong with that one; it’s classic.

Mike, Mike, Mike…Rudy? How could you? Don’t you know Notre Dame was playing GA Tech when Rudy finally got on the field and they were running up the score on us so he could get in the game? I was there that day and trust me, the Irish fans weren’t very “pleasant” (as they usually aren’t to Jackets, especially after the team beat them in Atlanta without throwing a pass – the next year they were beating GA Tech by something like 62 – 7 with 5 minutes left in the game, and they still had their starters in while we had our subs in; The Irish drove down and threw a long play-action TD to continue to rub our noses in it; Tech did score a late TD to make it 69-14 I think). But Rudy???? Please, anything but that…

Your post is somewhat confusing. Cox went to Ga Tech and likes the movie “Rudy”. What’s the big deal……?
The final score was ND 24 – GT 3.
The actual “Rudy” play:

It’s nice to have Mike Cox back. He has been pancaking linebackers and I don’t think he has missed a pass has he? Michael Turner seems to run well with a solid lead blocker… who doesn’t?
