Atlanta Falcons: Tony Gonzalez on Greg Hardy’s trash talk: ‘What else is he going to say?’ They haven’t won’

By Michael Cunningham

FLOWERY BRANCH–The inflammatory comments by Carolina defensive end Greg Hardy got the attention of the Falcons. His quotes were a topic of conversation during team meetings this morning.

But the tone among the Falcons seemed to be more amused than angry or offended.

What is wrong with Panthers DE Greg Hardy saying the Panthers are better than the Falcons?

“What else is he going to say at this point? They haven’t won that many games,” Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez said. “And you know they are going to compete. They always compete. That’s part of the fun. That’s why we play the game. We have got to go out there and see if we can prove him wrong.”

Hardy said the Panthers are better than the Falcons even though Carolina is 3-9 to Atlanta’s 11-1 and lost 30-28 at the Georgia Dome on Sept. 30. Hardy declared himself “not a fan” of the Falcons and promised “a long day” in Sunday’s rematch in Charlotte.

“They’ve got to say something,” Falcons wide receiver Roddy White said while grinning. “They are fighting. They are holding on. They are in a different position than we are. They are trying to save the rest of their season and we are trying to prepare ourselves for this playoff run. Whatever you say to get yourself going or motivate yourself on Sunday, then you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.”

Added White: “Those guys played well against us last time so I can’t really talk about him and what he said. They had seven sacks so you might not want to get those guys all riled up. Just let ‘em sleep.”

The Panthers also took issue with Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan yelling, “Get the (bleep) off my field!” in their direction while walking to the locker room after Matt Bryant kicked a 40-yard field goal for the victory in September. Television cameras caught Ryan’s outburst.

“He’s a fiery guy,” White said. “He’s a competitor and he wants to win. And, just speaking in general, I didn’t have a problem with what he said. It is our field. So get off it; you just lost. It’s that simple.

“Those guys, they have been close to beating us the last couple years and felt they should have won. They’ve got a chip on their shoulders. We feel like we are a better football team than them. The war of words comes out. Y’all just happened to catch [Ryan] saying that. I don’t think he was expecting y’all to hear that message.”

The Falcons also got into a verbal back-and-forth this season with the Saints, another division rival.

Gonzalez said it’s all just a part of football.

“I like it,” Gonzalez said. “It makes you ready. All that can do is get the other team ready to go. If we had any lack of focus, that’s only going to help us focus more and be ready. Because they are coming to play, so we better be ready.”

White and Tony should just shut their whining spigots, we were just like Carolina not too long ago and we could easily be back in their place if we don’t focus.

Is DOL trying to stir something up or what? Doesn’t seem like much to this story except some media hype. Its fun, but I don’t see any substance. Let’s just play ball.

Sigh……the kitties.smh I guess they feel the same way about us that we do about the Aints. We’ve owned them for quite some time and the frustration of being an overhyped team yet a perrennial loser over the last few years finally got to him I guess.LOL

Greg Hardy is a nobody. Why even mention that it hurt your wittle felwings that you bascially gave away a game. You were on the field when Ryan dropped back and launched it 59 yards in the air. You were on the field when Roddy caught all over Nakumara and when Ryan and company got the next 2 first downs to get in field goal range. And you damn sho was there when Bryant kicked the winning field goal and you walked outta there without the W. So yeah get the EFF off our field LOSERS! how do you let someone get that many yards from the 1 with less than a minute to go and have the audacity to be offended when you lose be mad at ya self. I wish a panthers fan would say something

DLed – Please stop writing about this nonsense. Can’t believe the AJC thinks someone whining about an insignificant heat-of-the-moment comment from WEEK FOUR is worth coverage ten weeks later. It would appear that you are looking to stir up trouble.

I would lot rather be thought of as a mediocre 11-1 team than a very good 3-9 team. We’ve been on the 3 and 9 end way too often. Go Falcons!

It definitely must be a slow week in the media for this to be a story. However, all thoughts about a trap game just went out the window; I think the Panthers just woke up a team with their minds on the playoffs. Besides, it will probably be plenty of Falcons fans at Bank of American field on Sunday, so who’s field will that be?

Greg Hardy out of University of Mississipi his JR year was supposed to be a top 10 pick, didnt have a great season his SR year and ended up being taken in the last few rounds which I was hoping the Falcons were going to grab him. Not sure why he dropped the way he did but is in his 3rd season and has played well since coming out of college. A miss opportunity by the Falcons for a DE

@Paddy O: I think that the team talking trash publically is unwarranted and makes us, the whole city, look stupid and foolish. Hardy can talk all he wants he’s a reflection of his team, but Tony G., and in particular Roddy, need to ignore that and keep their traps shut. If we are going to be the MIGHTY, MIGHTY FALCONS then the team needs to step up and act like it, instead of responding to that. Roddy has always looked like a second grade drop out with some of the comments he has twitted, we don’t need the rest of our mentally challenged players from starting, or even responding to, that garbage. I don’t know, maybe we’re not better.

Gonzales is right: I’m glad Hardy said this. The Panthers can play us tough, and probably will play us tough this Sunday. Cam is a better QB now than when we last played them, and they almost beat us then. So we need to bring it. We need to really focus like it’s a play-off game. They rush the QB really well, and the Birds better have a scheme to deal with it (we didn’t do so well protecting Ryan last time). Si I’m glad he said it. It will help us get ready.

Yeah Breees was talking crap last week before the game, but at least he was riling up his own team, not the media. Tony was talking to the directly to the media about Hardy’s crap and making himself and the team look bad.

@Esquire

How did Tony Gonzalez make the team look bad? He did not say anything stupid or give the Panthers bulletin board material. He simply responded to how a players statement can motivate the Falcons to play better. His statement was we have to be ready. What’s wrong with being ready?? Are you really a Falcon fan??

What Carolina is saying makes perfect sense if you are _________ (you fill in the blank). The Panthers have won 3 games and are going to win the Superbowl. That makes them better than Atlanta.
