Saints at Atlanta Falcons: Quoteboard

“They were shutting us down especially in that third and early part of that fourth quarter. We’ve got to play better. Offensively, there’s no excuses, especially with the guys that we have on that side of the ball. . . . But, just like always, we came up with the plays when we had to.”

Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez

“They’ve had our number. There’s no doubt about it, they’ve had our number. It feels really, really good to come out and get that victory. I’d be lying to you if I didn’t say thoughts going the way of getting a loss again, even when we got that lead, crept up in my mind.”

Gonzalez

“If you are worried about what you are doing in January during September, October, November, December you’re wasting your time. So I’ve tried to keep that week-to-week focus but, at the same time, we’ve had some sour taste in our mouths and the end of the last couple seasons so hopefully we’ll have an opportunity to change that.”

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan on if he’s eager to get to the playoffs

“Because they beat us. We only lost one game this year and it was to them. And then they are our rivals, so automatically it was going to be a tough game. We wanted to get back at them.”

Falcons defensive end John Abraham on why the game was so emotional for him

“’Willie Mo’ is probably the best strong safety in the NFL. He doesn’t get a lot of credit. I’ve seen him mature over the years. He’s playing like a big-time player, which he is a big-time player.”

Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson on teammate William Moore

“Nothing to say to the doubters. We are going to play our game. We don’t care what anyone says. They like us, they hate us, they want to bandwagon us—it doesn’t matter. It’s all about the people in the locker room and this staff.”

Falcons cornerback Robert McClain

“They put up 17 points real quickly. The first drive they scored. They scored again. It was 14 nothing before we could blink our eyes.”

Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma

“I take full responsibility for this loss. I didn’t do a good job of preparing our football team to come in here and get the job done. We will go back to work tomorrow. The future as far as the playoffs go looks bleak right now but we will still work to get better every day.”

Sorry, holding the overall record at 47-41, beating the aints like a drum preBrees since they came in the league, and spanking them tonight and sending them home without dinner, all that adds up to Big Falcon Brother giving the whiney bounty cheating little squirt brother a lesson in what a rivalry is and who owns it. Go home little child, learn to play fair and not cheat and we;ll beat your a$$ next year for good measure.

Finding a way (s) to win bodes well for the future. Defense was stellar. We seemed lost in the 3rd qtr. I remain convinced that a bruising running back available in the second half would be a big improvement. MT33 fell back into his plodding and stopping and the O lline needs to block better. As Brees pointed out ,”they went 1-9 in third downs”.
Appears that we have no answer for getting yards on first down and we are forced to try a “conservative approach” to gain yards.
If we had not had 5 Pic 6’s and a slip and a drop in the endzone, we would have lost. That is a reality.

Elvis…I wouldn’t be so quick to play the “if” game when it comes to the outcome of the game. What “if” we didn’t drop so many passes? What “if” Konz has a better game (he got beat like a drum repeatedly). Since the clock and score affect play-calling and sometimes the intensity and focus of the players, its hard to play what if and change two to three plays scattered throughout the game and determine the outcome.

Reality is that we won and did it with great defense.

Anytime we can beat the AINTS it is a fantastic victory! The D held strong and did as good as any in the NFL last night! I am concerned with the O, though. Look at the scores the past 5 weeks and you see why ATL is not putting opponents away. Konz needs to grow up fast and age has caught up on McClure. We really need those two to improve going into the playoffs. They are the weak link. Hope Samuel gets back soon, but don’t rush it…be healthy for the playoffs!

I don’t play Fantasy or bet on games, I just enjoy watching the NFL. As a long time fan, the Falcons have been highly entertaining. I’m getting used to their come back excitement and find college blowouts boring. Considering where the Falcons have been prior to Smitty & company, this seems like heaven, man!

A few weeks ago, if you told me we would be playing NO without Grimes and Samuel, I would say we don’t have a chance. Thanks McClain for becoming a good corner and thank you Owens for doing a good job also. Defense, good job.
How this offense did such a good job the 1st qtr then shut down amazes me. Playing NO and dropping passes that stop drives can’t continue. MT & JR ran good 1st qtr but when it quit working MS went right back to trying to get MT touches and the result was 2nd and long. It looks like MS is doing the play calling. If not, I’m not sure I like DK’s play calling. Why don’t we have the pitchout that moves the defense a half step in the other direction. Hard to discribe.
We started out as a power house, then we were very lucky. How can this NO mediocre defense hold us to 2 FG’s in the last 3 qtrs? I love this team and being 11-1 but I wanted to continue what we did in that 1st qtr. Seems we never do that.

PS – Samuel has 10 days to rest that shoulder before the Carolina game. If it’s not quite ready by then, I say rest it another week and make sure it’s good and healed.

To the defense;Great EFFORT&GAME! To the offense, sporadic to watch last night but a win is what counts. To the coach,IF the running game results from the first quarter last night can be duplicated for 4 quarters, the road to the SUPER BOWL will be all downhill.Good Luck Team!

Mr. Blank; Dimitroff, re-up on Coach Nolan; He schemes it up very well defensively, that he’s gotten the best out of Bierman, Decoud, new guy Robert McClain, Moore, etc. of others whom van Gorder couldn’t even give a sniff off the bench to. Coach Nolan makes adjustments that made Breezy, & Peyton Manning look like Deer N’ the headlights, Dazed & confused, w/ the Line change schemes before the ball is snapped, w/ different looks, Look like Breeze was confused before the ball was snapped. Thank You Coach Nolan. Great(unpredictable)scheming defenses win Championships, Coach, keep it up, & Lets Bring it Home in January. P.S. Mr. Blank, Great Coaches far, few, & between, hard to find. Take care of ‘em & his family for a long while. He gets the best out of the talent he’s got, we Long suff’rn fans havn’t seen this since’98,Gotta love it man!

This defensive secondary has really been a nice surprise! They needed to improve tremendously from last year and they have. The young kids are putting in the hard work and growing to become stars right before our eyes. In spite of injuries, this whole defense gets better every week. And John Abraham… I LOVE YOU MAN! Way to show that unbelievable strength and energy the WHOLE game. This entire defense, including all those on the bench, show fire in their belly and have the potential to emege as the winning force in the playoffs. It is tough for a team to lose when the have the ability to prevent the best QB in the NFL from getting a touchdown pass and they can intercept him FIVE times. That says something! They have played some of the best QBs in the NFL and made them look BAD. GO FALCONS! YOU ARE RISING UP!
