Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan hopes to rebound from 5 interception day

FLOWERY BRANCH — Matt Ryan is in uncharted territory.

In 74 previous NFL games, he had never thrown more than three interceptions, and that happened only twice.

So, rebounding from his five-interception game against Arizona on Sunday will be a first-time NFL experience for the fifth-year quarterback.

“You can’t worry about it,” Ryan said. “Part of playing this position in this league is knowing that there will be times when you make mistakes and fall flat on your face. You just have to get up and keep playing and keep throwing.”

As the Falcons (9-1) have transitioned to a pass-first offense, Ryan doesn’t appear to have a viable alternative to slinging passes around the field when the Falcons face upstart Tampa Bay (5-5) at 1 p.m. Sunday at Raymond James Stadium.

“We’ve got to move on,” offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said. “We know that Matt is going to bounce back from that. He just has to forget about it and move on to the next one.”

But, Ryan will have to be more selective and try not to get so many of his passes tipped.

“The batted balls, there were some poor decisions, there were balls going off of receivers hands,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “It was just one of those games where the ball wasn’t going to bounce our way, and it didn’t bounce our way. We were able to overcome that.”

With the interceptions, Ryan finished with the second-lowest passer rating (40.5) of his career. His passer rating dropped from 102.6 to 94.8 after the Arizona game.

In a way, the performance was impressive.

“They still found a way to beat Arizona,” said former NFL quarterback Rich Gannon, a SiriusXM NFL Radio analyst. “They came back. The one thing you know about Matt Ryan is he always finds a way to come back. That’s something, if you’re Atlanta, you can hang your hat on.”

Ryan’s first pass of the game was intercepted when wide receiver Roddy White bobbled a pass that was slightly behind him. On Ryan’s third interception, his arm was hit, and a pass intended for Tony Gonzalez sailed into the arms of Arizona safety Kerry Rhodes.

On the fourth, linebacker Daryl Washington undercut White’s route and made a play. The Washington interception was the one that Ryan was most furious about.

The fifth interception came when Ryan’s pass bounced high into the air off of Arizona tackle Dan Williams’ helmet.

Ryan just tried to battle through the tough day.

While Ryan nearly blew a gasket after the fourth interception, several players maintained that he remained composed.

“There are a lot of hats you wear as quarterback,” Ryan said. “Part of it is player, and part of it is keeping everybody on the same page and being relaxed.”

The win went against several long-standing notions about turnovers and losing. Smith had the research staff up late trying to figure out how the Falcons won with so many turnovers.

“You can’t turn the ball over six times (the Falcons also had a fumble) in a football game and win,” Smith said. “Statistically, the chances of that happening are two or three percent. In fact, since 2003 there’s been 61 games (with a) five-or-more turnover advantage to one team, and only two times did the team win that was on the wrong side of that ratio”

Ryan, who has a 2-2 record in games at Tampa Bay, doesn’t want a repeat performance.

“I’m just glad that we still won,” Ryan said. “As a quarterback you don’t ever want to have those kinds of games, but they happen. It’s just about how you respond to that and what you keep doing.”

Note: To help buttress the offensive line, the Falcons signed guard Harland Gunn off the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad Tuesday. The team was concerned about their depth after center/guard Joe Hawley was suspended for four games by the league Monday.

When you think about it, without 6 turnovers ATL crushes AZ and their “vaunted” defense.

That signing is just having a body on the roster while Hawley is out. Beyond that, it means nothing, because Hawley wasn’t playing any damn way….

Ryan will bounce back. We’ve seen him do it before. And we’re gonna need him against Tampa, which won’t let us run anymore than anybody else has.

My observations say a team that has a high number of turnovers is being mentally pressured to perform above their capability. Simply put..the members are worried about keeping their jobs. This includes the coach. Coach Smith is a wreck.
Some turnovers are caused by a short throw/ long throw or a helmet dislodging the ball etc.
Others are described as missed assignments, uncalled fouls by the opponent and lack of focus.
Solution; I would suggest Mr. Blank remove himself from the locker room.
Football is not a retail store where employees are aware that the Boss is on the premises.
How do you feel when the Boss is watching you—up close and personal?
MB2 is under that kind of scrunity, as well as MT33. My take is they are all being pressured.
Some will say it comes with the territory.. I believe if you just sit back Mr. Blank these fellas might just win it all. The path to the SB will not be easy and the injuries are mounting.
I am not saying the coaches or team should take the collective foot off the gas..I just believe some turnovers are coming from lack of focus..fear of losing your job is not a great motivation.
The Tampa Bay Bucs (where I currently work) are tenacious, driven and washed in the limelight of winning games by coming from behind. Freeman cannot pass consistently and the OL is.good at run blocking , but poor on pass protection.
(note to the Atlanta Braves–DO NOT SIGN..CF…B.J.UPTON–he is a meathead)
Atlanta Falcons.. 30…Tampa Bay Bucs…14.. Angry Birds watch the run, the uber soft zone in the middle and TACKLE..Stop the human highlights..be a pro..your job depends on it.

Give me a break. It’s one game with a high amount of turnovers. Last I looked, we didn’t see what was going on in the locker room, only on the sidelines.

And if Blank’s presence on the sideline is a problem, then why in the F are we 9-1?

Some interesting thoughts there Elvis. I was surprised by your final score prediction after reading your commentary. I hope that you are right. I see it a little closer. Maybe “one point close” either way. I agree King Arthur ought to get the heck out of the way. I couldn’t make myself call that pompous, mafiaoso looking dandy, “Mr. Blank”, if my life depended on it. Watch from your luxury suite during the game if you must and then a brief locker room appearance after the game but only after the coaching staff have spoken and un-locked the locker room door. But back on subject, you would think elite players at this level would crave the spot light after having tried to attain it pretty much their whole lives. The Great Ones revel in it. The bigger and hotter and brighter it is the better!! We shall see if these particular raptors have greatness in them.

i like that blank comes down on the field, he comes win lose or draw, even when we were getting thumped in the play-offs. And after all it is his investments and time, i think they appreciate a owner who comes and speaks and gets in the game, Instead of standing in the box looking down on them like they are pieces of meat. You can tell he was a fan long before he was the owner. Lets be honest falcons fans, if you owned the falcons even for a day you would go down on the field and sideline during the game. If you say you wouldnt and you call yourself a true falcon fan then youre lying. They are at war, and he comes to the battlefield. Heck i bet if he could, he would put a helmet on lol. @Adogg36 No, I heard the ‘67 GB team did it with 5 interceptions, but the article quotes CMS as saying: …Smith said. “Statistically, the chances of that happening are two or three percent. In fact, since 2003 there’s been 61 games (with a) five-or-more turnover advantage to one team, and only two times did the team win that was on the wrong side of that ratio”

So I assumed there was something after 2002, and it wouldn’t have been 5 interceptions since that was GB ‘67, it could have been fumbles or a combination.

Look at it this way: under most any other circumstances Bart Starr is a name you’d feel pretty good about being mentioned with as an NFL QB. Even Hall of Famers have a terrible game now and then. Fortunately I believe this experience will help Ryan remain more focused to avoid such mistakes from here on. He knows the Falcons can’t afford turnovers against any of their upcoming opponents.

Mentally pressured to play above their ability??? What game did you watch Sunday? Have you been watching all year??

3 of 5 interceptions came on bad tips. 2 of them were awful decisions (awful decisions that generally happen when the QB is under duress)

Apologies to Todd McClure, I know they’ve worked at it, but this Falcons team does not have an adequate amount of talent on either side of the ball to control the line of scrimmage.

If they could, they would.

The bottom line is that none of this matters because they are WINNING. They don’t ask how at the end, they only ask how many.

There is no way on the planet that Arthur Blank changes direction with this group he’s got even if they flame out again in the postseason. We’ll all cry for it, but it won’t happen.

He’s not going to find better people for the jobs than what he’s got now. This is the best front office in the history of this franchise, he would be crazy to change it up. Mistakes happen. Ray Edwards happens.

Ok, Matt had a bad game, but overall he has played well this season, so we can’t really harp on this one bad game. With that said, whenever you lack a descent running game, you pass more, so you more likely to get picked or passes intercepted, hopefully our running attack picks up, where we won’t become one dimensional, and if we become one dimensional, it’s time to hit the panic button, especially going into the playoffs.

I doubt very seriously, that Ryan is going to have another 5 interception game in his career, let alone back to back Sundays! 2 of those interceptions were tipped at the line and his fault and preventable. The first one was a bobbled ball by the receiver who should have caught the ball, although it was thrown a tad bit behind him. If the Falcons keep there turnovers to 2 or less they will be in this game to the end with a good chance to win.

Who owns the team? Who wants a new stadium to sell PSL’s and more merch.
Pressure from Mr Blank to win..of course..
but there is an unspoken pressure for Mr. Blanks own success
Prior to Smith and TD we didn’t have very good teams and the “love ” of the coach killer MV was the epitome of drafting and over paying players because of their perceived value. It was not how well they could play, but did they have a draw to fill seats.
My intent of this posting is for him to “back off” and let the coaches coach and the players play.
Sure 9-1 is above par for a limited attack running game and a suspect OL.And if you disagree then you are not paying attention to the opponents. Denver-great job/ New Orleans not so good.
Lack of focus..the team is distracted..and it is internal not external ?
Smith throwing the flag..was it lack of focus or a distraction?
A coach who is adamant about the process and the details..what caused that “mistake” to happen when the president of our Falcons is the head of the rules committee?
Smith knew the rule..yet “lost it”
The only logical conclusion is that some amount of influence is being brought to bear upon the staff and players.
Sadly, we will lose another game, I believe. However, I feel we will win one playoff game to remove the scourge of traditional losses.
We have 6 more regular season games and every game brings Mr. Blank closer to swaying the public toward a new taxpayer supported sports palace.
It is human behaviour to desire to compete and Jerry Jones is not the only owner who has a huge ego.
I would ask Mr. Blank to limit contact with the players and coaches prior to the game and at halftime. I know he is the owner..he can do what he wants..but if he wants this team to win…he needs to “back off” on the subtle pressure to win (so a stadium deal is assured) and let the ANGRY BIRDS play the game…

Why not? The 9ers look like a complete team.
The Patriots are blowing people out of the water.
Of course the media will show love to those teams, because those teams have proven it in the playoffs and Super Bowls.
We got off to a 3-0 start, and blew teams out of the water. Then we haven’t.
Every prime time game, we’ve just managed to win.

Of course, I just care for the win, but the media doesn’t, and since they want flashy, we won’t be seen highly in their eyes, until come playoff time.

The reason the Dlinemen were batting balls is because Ryan gets frantic in the pocket, and always tries to dink and dunk his way out of a heated situation.

It seems defenses are catching on to the fact that when they see Quizz on the field, he’s not going to be just a check down option, he’s going to be THE option.

Ryan takes his eyes off from downfield and dinks away.

With Julio out, he didn’t try to go deep much late.

If the Falcons win enought games to have home field, then i think they have a chance to go to the supper bowl ,but if they have to go on the road to 9ers or greenbay then we could be in trouble.

Dirk Koetter said. “We know that Matt is going to bounce back from that. He just has to forget about it and move on to the next one.”

Wow, what a absolute throwing of your quarterback under the bus! NO responsibility at all Dirk? NOne for yourself? None for that SHAM of an group you call an offensive line? How about that Inch-worm Running Back you continue to hand the ball to who cant execute a cut back or hit a hole with any power whatsoever? You coaches are a piece of work in the NFL, a league where almost all Player rosters are at Parity and 90% of winning and losing is what? that’s right C O A C H I N G. Game planning, Play schemes, and game day adustment ability. YOUR offense has an attrocious day and YOU hope your quarterback “bounces back”? are you kidding me? Not a good sign folks.

Flaccid Falcons stand no chance against Jill Kelley’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Well, the bookies have this game as a “pick’um” toss up……and now that I think about it some more I’m going to pick the Falcons! Ryan won’t have two bad games in a row, especially not against this pathetic Tampa Bay defense and secondary! My agents tell me that when the Bucs break the defensive huddle…..ONLY 1 of the secondary guys knows where he’s suppose to be! That use to be us…..now it’s them!!!

I’m so proud of all of the Falcons and their coaching staff and Mr. Blank and the great winning football that they have finally brought to Atlanta. I would be heart broken if the I got up one day and the headline read “Arthur Blank uproots Falcons and moves the team to Birmingham Al.” Be careful what you wish for !

Rick Patel should worry more about keeping the bathrooms clean at the 7 Eleven his uncle owns. Your Bucs are going nowhere.

So much has been written about Blank’s presence, but he still don’t get it. How sad, and stupid. On the other hand – the first playoff game will unveil Falcon’s weaknesses. Playoffs: Atlanta 0-4.

There is no reason in the why Matt Ryan would play with intrepidation like he’s been playing over last game or two. He started out the season playing without fear-so why start now? The one thing I did notice is that the offense as a whole seems one dimensional when Julio isn’t on the field. The running game and screen game has got to be more in the forefront. Also where did the “no huddle” go to? I haven’t seen it in a while. What about pump fakes or hard counts-especially on third and short. The quarterbacks coach should be on the hotseat, but at the end of the day-it is Matt’s job to do what he thinks is best to do-and he should have that control and not become a robot of anyone-to be dictated to-on precisely how to do his job-that IS the quarterbacks responsibility. Matt Ryan: please do your job. O-line: Keep Matt upright. We’ll be ALRIGHT!

The coaches need to learn how to handle the MATH for extra point vs. 2 point conversion.
Simply put, if after a touchdown, you are down by 5 go for the 2 point conversion. Then you will be a field goal away from tying it. Go for PAT and you still need a touchdown.

In the one game that the Falcons lost this year, they screwed this up.
BTW, no charge!

[...] Atlanta Falcons: Matt Ryan hopes to rebound from 5 interception day In 74 previous NFL games, he had never thrown more than 3 interceptions, & that happened only twice. So, rebounding from his 5-interception game against Arizona on Sunday will be a 1st-time NFL experience for the fifth-year quaterback. Read more on Atlanta Journal Constitution (blog) [...]
