Atlanta Falcons: Michael Turner plans to keep on grinding away

FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons running back Michael Turner has had some time to reflect on the team’s anemic rushing output against the Saints.

“You’ve got to expect things to get tougher as the year goes on and especially if you’re a good team, people are going to give you their best shot,” said Turner, who rushed for 15 yards on 13 carries and was stuffed on a key third-and-goal from the Saints’ 1-yard line with 1:56 to play “So we have to be prepared for everybody’s best shot.”

Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said that Turner had “no chance” on most of his runs as there were free runners at the point of attack.

“That’s what I’m saying,” said Turner when asked if it was tough to run with three defenders in the backfield at times. “Sometimes defenses are going to have good schemes against us and be able to get good penetration and things like that. It’s just something we have to handle and run different types of plays sometimes and just clean it up.”

Turner has rushed for 529 yards on 140 carries and scored four touchdowns as the Falcons have shifted to becoming more of a passing team.

“Everybody’s going to nitpick,” Turner said. “We’re a different team this year, obviously with philosophies and things like that, but I mean we’re 8-1. That’s the bottom line; to get Ws.

“We’re not worried about it. Of course we want to get better and improve in all areas we need to improve in and just maintain the things we’re doing great. We’ve just got to keep going, keep grinding.”

Turner admits that he’s adjusting to not being the featured player in the offense.

“It’s different for me,” said Turner, who average more than 20 carries in 59 games before this season with the Falcons. “But ‘get in where you fit it.’ Do your role. Roles change all the time. Roles change from week to week. You just have to be able to adjust.”

The reality has set in for Turner that the Falcons have joined the crowd. They are now a passing team in a passing league.

Turner, a two-time Pro Bowler and one-time All-Pro player, had more than 300 carries in three of the past four seasons. He led the league in carries in 2008 with 376 and 2010 with 334.

“Oh yeah, it was talked about,” Turner said. “It’s been talked about for years, but this year it’s finally showing. But there is nothing that I can do really.

“Everything is revolving around the quarterback and we have a great one and he’s striving to be elite. You have to let him do his thing.”

Face facts guys; he saved the Falcons 2 weeks ago against the Cowboys. If I recall Turner was the only one to score a TD in that game. Michael Turner has some big games left in him! Matt Ryan has ice water in his veins; hahahahaha yea right! tell me that when he’s in the playoffs; oh wait he’s never won a playoff game!

true but this is his 5th year, and he has more game winning drives than anyone since 2008. To me it looks like he can lock in during crunch time, most people dont like it, but teams have to respect it

@ D. Orlando Ledbetter I have some good advice for our offense I think Coach need to have faith in our team not just one player who leads his position switch it up a little let each player know every week our position is at stake if you don’t keep up with the pace of our offenceyou can be replaced like how our run isn’t efficient rotate our backs use Antone Smith to get us up the field use Rodgers on bootlegs & play action use Snelling on short yardage & Turner as

This is the problem. I never saw him as the featured player. It has always been Matt Ryan.

I believe most of the short yardage problems is shouldered by Turner. But I am not ready to slam the guy or run him out on a rail. He still has a role on this team. And I love what he’s done for this team in the past. He has been a great back for the Falcons. But in a what have ya done for me lately league… his role has to be devided amonst the other backs. No more 20 runs a game for Burner

Look folks, Turner regularly runs at openings that do not exist. Why would he suddenly start behaving any differently when facing a decision that he good for the TEAM and CITY (ergo FANS); he can’t differentiate, it’s all about him. Unfortunately were witnessing denial in action where the result is no action, no yards and much more disappointment. Sorry Michael, but a man needs to step up or get out of the way. You run like you believe that you are Mr. Walker but you recent results so not reflect his strength and agility.

If Turner is so sorry, then why does he still get 8 to 9 players on defense in the box???

Thats respect from real football minds of knowing a player that is great.

SMH, you obviously don’t know anything about football. Of course you are going to get 8 in the box on short yardage plays. If anything this slow dancing bear should be shredding defenses because our passing attack is dangerous and defenses have to play more coverage so running the ball for at least a yard should not be that big of an issue. However, when you have the slowest out of shape back in the league running the ball then negative plays is what you get. Nice try with the 8 in the box line but we are not buying that. Maybe in the past when our passing offense was not as potent under MM, Turner has no excuse for not getting one yard. Do we care about Turner? No, that’s why we want him gone clown.

Hey Shaking my head, you do bring up a good point. Fans, it’s not just Turner, look at the o-line. I’d point the finger there first. When any team sees us drop back for a pass they ease up on the o-line alittle. When they see a run coming they keep grinding at our WEAK O-LINE to block Turner.

Ive seen rodgers make plays with our o line, cmon ok i agree our line isnt great for the run but turner doesnt have the burst to hit the hole fast enough even if the the hole is there, you cant always expect the line to do all the work for the back sometimes you gotta power through tackles but turner doesnt seem to be able to get past a little ankle grab much less break a tackle

#33…thanks for helping resurrect the Falcons after Vick. But the truth is, you can only run between the tackles. You are a great runner when the hole is there but when it is not…man you stink! You can’t make something out of nothing by bouncing it to another hole, or outside….or push the line. You can do none of i! I wish you the best next year when you are cut!

U fools arent real smart 33 is still a good back dat o-line of ours isnt opening up any runing lanes shoet yards or not guys are in tha back field @ tha snap of tha ball I dont care who tha runing back is u cant gaine yards dat way not enuf credit goes to tha o-line when running back brake for ova 100 yards but all tha blame goes to tha back when they dont smh learn tha game of football

Teams have figured out that you just touch Turner’s legs and he is going down.

I can say this. He has changed his approach from the last speech about getting more touches to this speech about “getting in where you fit in”. For that I appreciate the way he answered the question and did not throw anyone under the bus. It tells me that we are still a TEAM that is HUNGRY and that is on a mission to prove to the NFL that we are a FORCE to be viewed. Good answer MT33 (I took off the TT before your name because of this answer I wont bash you and call you Tippy Toes (ttMT33) Look for MT to pay up BIG in some of these last games! The Nation is going to carry you now MT33 so as one we will fight with you when it looks like you are down and out! We got your back, you had ours during the Murlakey regime so now we GOT to have yours. I have taken my shots at you but dont let me down………….IN

This is where the rubber meets the road. The Falcons have to be able to FINISH! The Saints game showed a lack of will by the Falcons. The Falcons must at times be able to impose their will on the other team. If they don’t get the run game up to at least adequate the playoff run will be a short one.
