Atlanta Falcons: Julio Jones held out of practice with ankle injury

FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones, who suffered an ankle injury against the New Orleans Saints, did not practice Wednesday.

He left the game with was announced as a leg injury. On television, they announced that he had a calf injury.

On Wednesday’s injury report, Jones’ injury was listed as an ankle.

Jones returned against the Saints and made a big play on a 52-yard reception in the fourth quarter.

“We wanted to keep Julio off his feet,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “Julio will be evaluated tomorrow and we will determine how much work he’ll do.”

Linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, who’s missed the past two games with an ankle injury, worked out with the training staff and appears closer to returning.

“Sean was working with our (Athletic Performance) staff and he moved around,” Smith said. “We’ll ramp that up tomorrow and see how he feels in the morning to see what his work load will be for tomorrow.”

Jones, Weatherspoon, wide receiver Kevin Cone (groin) and safety Charles Mitchell (calf) did not practice.

The Falcons had a long list of players that were limited in practice.

Defensive end John Abraham (back), defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux (thigh), wide receiver Harry Douglas (ankle), tight end Tony Gonzalez (shoulder), linebacker Stephen Nicholas (groin), running back Michael Turner (groin) and defensive tackle Vance Walker (ribs) were all limited in practice.

Linebacker Mike Peterson (foot) was listed on the injury report but fully participated in practice.

“The majority of those guys that were limited participation, will be full participation tomorrow,” Smith said. “It was a very physical game. We want to get some of these guys some rest. They have some bumps and bruises. That’s why we had a much longer list today.”

For Arizona, quarterback Kevin Kolb (ribs) and defensive end Calais Campbell (calf) did not practice Wednesday.

Cornerback Jamell Fleming (back), tight end Todd Heap (knee), tight end Jeff King (knee), long snapper Mike Leach (back), guard Adam Snyder (quad) and cornerback Greg Toler (hamstring) were limited Wednesday. Safety Kerry Rhodes (back) fully participated in practice.

I doubt julio misses the game. He might be LIMITED in the game but he was well enough to come back right after his injury, leap in the air and grab the ball for that huge reception in the 4th this past sunday. If he is injured that just puts even more pressure on roddy and tony. Douglas is a good reciever but he is not reliable

We need Julio and Spoon healthy and strong if we want the Falcons to win the Superbowl. These are two awesome game-changing players.

Julio looked fine on that bomb after coming back into the game…he should be a go against Arizona. I am sure Spoon is elated to get up off the training table and finally get the blood pumping again. We need #56 back on the field. RISE UP SPOON!

I would agree a smart coach doesn’t beat his team up on implementing game plan. Still got 7weeks plus to balance heath and preparation

Something tells me Julio will be playing this week. I’m sure he’s being held out as a precautionary measure. He seemed to be ok after getting hurt last week.

Sign Plaxico Burress. We could use this guy in the red zone. He can not possibly be any slower than Tony Gonzalez or “Burner Turner”. Bedsides, he has great hands!!!

Obviusly, we can not find a quality O-lineman to block for Turner. Barry Sanders is not coming out of retirement. Therefore, we have to strengthen our strength!!!

I just do not understand why they made Ray Edwards the Scapegoat. Clearly the running game, ie.., Michael Turner, Justin Blalock, Sam Baker, Todd McClure…, some of these guys should be benched or “RELEASED.” Running game is absolutely inept, dysfunctional, and down right atrocious!

Keith, I like the Plaxico idea for the red zone. Then, no need to run in the red zone when you have Tony, Roddy, Julio and Plaxico in the red zone. Also, Tiki Barber would be a good short yardage and back-up RB. We have an abundance of character to deal with these two for remainder of season and playoffs. I think I blogged all during the pre-season to pick up some of the good fast running backs we saw running thru our 2nd and 3rd string D but TD stuck with our slow turtle RBs instead.

This was a good lost, “what a good lost” Yes, very much so. The Dirty birds need to stay grounded! Mr. White with the talk of going undefeated ……No Mr. White, the Falcons sir had a first great half of the season, that’s it you didn’t win anything not a thing!!!!! FOCUS on the goal of the winning home field advantage, then win the first playoff game if you make it to the playoff’s. then win the next game, and the the next until there is no more games but the Big Game” The Super Bowl”. So Mr. White Please stay focus on one game at a time. oh next time please continue running your route before back peddling to see where the ball is. If you did that “GAME OVER! So, dirty birds please stay FREAKEN “FOCUS”. and as far as you dirty hater’s hate on because this is our year. PERIOD!!!!!!

The “Dirty Birds” moniker, being associated with the Falcons, was retired way back when Jamal Anderson moved on.

The Falcons looked flat when Julio left the game Sunday. Even if he is 50% he should be on the field.

Harry D stepped it up when Julio left the game. He was robbed on that low pass that Smitty challenged. It was a CATCH and would have sustained a good drive late in the game. That’s the ghosts of the Superdome at work I guess.

Michael Turner has been playing injured all season with a groin injury which won’t get better because these dumb coaches won’t sit him out any games to heal and falcon fans think turner is done and is too slow…well folks, a groin injury is reason why he hasn’t produced..he doesn’t explode and cut cause he doesn’t want to make it worse than it is…Blame falls on coaches..now Julio hasn’t practiced all week, but coaches list him as game time decision..if a player doesn’t practice all week usually means he won’t play in the game…these coaches don’t have a clue how to get the best out of all their players cause they don’t have control of the players best interest…if a player is hurt, but says i want to play…a coach needs to step in and say no you’re not playing until you’re 100% I believe these coaches go by what the players tell them…oh well, good luck falcon fans
