By Michael Cunningham
The Falcons released defensive end Ray Edwards less than two seasons after he was heralded as a key component of the team’s pass rush.
The Falcons signed Edwards as a free agent in July 2011, giving him $11 million in guaranteed salary on a five-year deal. But Edwards produced little in the way of sacks (3.5) or quarterback pressures in 25 games with the Falcons.
Edwards started all 16 games in 2011 and four of nine games this season. Edwards’ playing time had decreased this season, a development coach Mike Smith and offensive coordinator Mike Nolan attributed to extensive use of special personnel packages.
Kroy Biermann has absorbed a number of Edwards’ snaps while playing a hybrid position in Nolan’s defense.
The Vikings selected Edwards in fourth round of the 2006 draft our of Purdue. He was set to make $3 million in base salary this year, $5.5 million in 2013, $5 million in 2014 and $5 million in 2015.

Smart move. On to D. Robinson’s poor tackling technique. D, a ball carrier cannot run without his legs. Why are you trying to tackle a guy who is bigger than you and running away from you around the shoulders??? Assuming you had a reason to attempt this, I would recommend that in the future when you have a hand in your face (stiff arm) grab his wrist with both hands and fall down. You must hold on tight. Just saying.

The whole reason they got him was to take pressure off of Abe which he never did, or get sacks when John was getting double teamed which he never did. I’m glad the front office did it, their not playing. They want a super bowl, We want players that have that hunger, I wished we had gone after babin more or some others, I knew Edwards was a bad deal, he rode the coat tails of the Vikings DE Jared, he was not that good. I ‘m just hoping we are going to get a replacement or make this work better, because Edwards was not doing SQUAT.

D-Line should get the message, not sure how Nolan let them play so damn poorly this weekend without adjustments, stunts, etc. – something to put pressure on Brees. good to see Edwards pack a bag, no need for a Junior Haynesworth to stick around for a check.
How to fix the O-line? Sam Baker is still missing assignments. They can’t get a push on the goal line in 3 straight plays. Either the run blocking is so bad it’s pathetic or our RB, Fat Mike, can’t hit the hole fast enough on draws and slants. something has to give and soon or other teams will start playing 3 man fronts and daring us to throw….

Are the Falcons in panic mode? Don’t forget we are trying to win a SUPER BOWL. I agree Edwards didn’t work out here I only question the timing? But people calling for the release of Turner and or Robinson before season’s end I don’t know if that would be right. NFL players get injured and it is a long way till the SUPER BOWL. Smith and TD better keep them together, we were the only undefeated team in the NFL. I think TD needs to to bring a ton of players to try out, he may find a diamond. That is the way N.E. does it, tryout 3-4 players a week.

There were reports down at the Flowery Branch Water and Sewer Department that a whole bunch of cash showed up at their sewage treatment facility. Ray Edwards was a BUST and I would rather have Jamaal Anderson back than him. He was not aggressive enough for a defensive end and wasn’t even a threat. Jared Allen defined his success in Minnesota. Jonathan Massaquoi is relentless and deserves a shot. Also, I think that Todd McClure and the offensive line are defending their turf, because they are opening holes, but Michael Turner is too slow to get through them in sufficient time. So we end up with tackles for losses. I like Quizz and he is a good back, but I do not know about every down. For his size he is tough, but he get pounded. Give Snelling the ball and see what he can do. I’m not talking about when everyone on defense know when he is going to be the ball carrier. CUT Turner and let’s make our playoff run.

Turner may be next. I watched him Sunday and he is so slow getting to the hole. It’s ike he is running is slow motion, and with the Falcon’s line the hole doesn’t stay open long. If he get a running start, he still can make plays but he is a liability on short yardage plays up the middle. He was a good one but I am afraid his time is over.

we dont do to good in free agency pickups!!!! Ed Hartwell was pickep up back in 04-05 cause he played next to Ray Lewis and made his stats better Ashley Leley (i dont know what that was about) Ray Edwards benefited from Jared Allen. So in reality it isnt the players fault who the Falcons give the money too, its the ppl who go out and say “ohh thats our guy” if Arthur Blank called any of us on this blog and said i need a DE ill sign you for $11 mill im pretty sure yall aint going to turn it down and yall aint gettin no pressure on anybody

No, it’s really not funny. If we expect to be a championship caliber team………and I mean the Big Dance not just the playoffs, we should be able to win games like last Sunday. It was ours and we had so many opportunities and shot ourselves in the foot so many times. Until the playoffs that is as close a playoff caliber game we are going to be in and we didn’t get it done.
WHY? Asante Samuel for one, still probably running that mouth. Do it on the sideline Dunce Hat. Drew Davis, stopped running in a route……….do you think Ryan is going to throw you the ball where you were or where you are gonna be. Roddy White…..I’m not sure if he pulled up because he thought the ball was short or lost sight of it……..I dunno, but if he takes 3 more steps in stride we got 6 points. We couldn’t run the ball. Maybe we should have run a couple of plays to let Ryan run out of the pocket and slide to protect himself. That’s probably 5-6 yards easy, more than what we got out of our backs. At least it would give their D another dimension to think about. 6 penalties for 53 yards………….and that first one against #22 was a killer. Instead of the 12 we are on the 27 yard line………a gift from our defense to theirs, tis the season. Poor tackling….I could go on and on. The worst part of the loss is we breathed life into a team that was on life support and is now appearing in the NFL playoff picture as “In the Hunt” along with our other division foe Bucs.

This is a great move. Ray hasn’t made an impact in the run game, as it has become apparent that he can’t rush the passer. This move put the rest of the team on alert. Hoping that they stay tight as a group. I understand McClure being salty. It’s evident that the OL has worked extremely hard. Baker in particular is having his best year. Todd has been a great player in this town for a long time. Appreciate all his hard work, it’s just that they aren’t good “enough” sometimes.
That said, it’s one game, they are 8-1. I don’t think it’s any one units fault. They absolutely need to modify tendencies, and shake things up.

The trade deadline is over, so stop with the “get Steven jackson” crap. If the Falcons didnt pursue him before the trade, then they didnt want him, and arent gonna pursue him in the offseason either…his price tag is still too high.
I’m kinda glad they cut him at this point in the season-1) it shows they mean business about trying to right the defense, and anybody can get it if they dont get their act together, 2) it gives them extra money to make better moves in the offseason, and 3) he wasnt productive at all on the field.
I feel they should add Sidbury to the lineup and gradually bring in Massaquoi…

If we are evaluating players based on their level of play, then how in the world is Dunta still on the roster?!?! I understand the move on Ray Edwards, but think it was premature. Abraham has a track record of not staying healthy for the full 16 game season. So Mr. Dimitroff directs our eyes toward the blunder of the Ray Edwards signing. Indeed, it merits some thought and discussion of the monies and energies spent on Edwards coming out of the lockout, how little return we saw on that investment, and how the move stunted the growth of Bierman, Sidbury et al.
But I don’t think this cut revolves around Ray at all. He was not a great player and his attitude lacked, but I think this act – at this time stands – as a brilliant chess move to protect Dominque Davis. Think about it. Buffalo, Jville, and Arizona live in perpetual QB hell. Chicago, San Fran, and Pittsburgh just lost their excellent starters to injury for weeks. There are ten teams who might want to pounce on our undrafted free agent, third-string, practice squad quarterback reeking of athleticism and long-term potential.
Now we have a roster spot open and some extra monies to block a sudden lunge from a qb hungry league. We sent a message saying stay away. Signing Edwards proved dumb, dumping him minutes after Big Ben limped off the field, well that was really smart.
Well played Falcons czars…

I wouldn’t throw Turner under the bus just yet, he will come in handy down the stretch. Also players are under contract. It cost the Falcons to let Ray Edwards go, atleast think before you make these bonehead statements. If it were up to some of you people, you’d get rid of the Whole team. Keep in mind we could be the Kansas City Chiefs…………

This is a good sign that the organization will not hang on to unproductive players. And hopefully they will do something about Turner. Not saying they should cut him but gradually reduce his carries to only situations that he can be productive. He obviously can’t find holes in goaline and short yardage situations. I hope they atleast try to put someone out there there and see what they can offer.

Please have the same talk with Michael “I can’t cut left to right” Turner. It’s time to let him go and give Snelling/Rogers more touches.

Someone in the front office should be put on notice as well for this.
The Falcons do not have a single stud on defense! Not a one. The closest they have is Abraham.

Edwards had only 11 tackles on 200+ plays, and no sacks!!!!!
The offenses must have been going away from him. That’s almost impossible to do.

We dont have a running back that run with attitudes. One man souldn’t stop a 250 pound running back in his tracks. Same thing happened against NYJ last year. Weew could use a few football players with some nasty and we need another TE that can get deep. 53 misses too many tackles, 23 always beat, 33 too light on his feet. Release these guys and and get some football players.
