Falcons pull out 19-13 victory over Cowboys to remain undefeated

Eight up. Eight down.

The Falcons flexed their muscles against the Dallas Cowboys Sunday night to remain the only undefeated team in the NFL.

On a day when the pass protection was spotty, the defense was leaky and the field goal kicker was not automatic, the Falcons hung on to pull out a 19-13 victory before 70,840 fans at a rowdy Georgia Dome.

“I thought our guys had a really hard fought football game against a very good football team,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “It was an electric atmosphere for the entire 60 minutes. I like the way our team played tonight in all three phases.”

A national television audience saw a good evening’s work from quarterback Matt Ryan (342 passing yards with no interceptions), wide receivers Roddy White and Julio Jones, who had 247 yards in receptions between them, and running backs Michael Turner (102 rushing yards) and Jacquizz Rodgers.

The Falcons trailed early 6-0, but like they have so many times in the five years under Smith, they showed their resiliency with the game in the balance.

With the win, the Falcons took a four-game lead over Tampa Bay (4-4) in the NFC South as they head into the second half of the season. The Saints (2-5), who play on “Monday Night Football,” are 5 1/2 games back and the Panthers (2-6) are six games back.

Extending the best start to a season in franchise history, the Falcons had stated their top goal is to win their division and that is nearly done at the halfway point of the season.

Dallas, considered a preseason contender in the NFC East, dropped to 3-5.

“We did a nice job staying focused because it could’ve been real easy early on when we held those first two scored to field goals,” Smith said. “We did some things very well. I can’t say enough about the guys and it’s week-to-week. We’ll put this one behind us and move on to the next one.”

After the Cowboys moved the ball in the early going. Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan made some adjustments, forcing the Cowboys to punt on four straight possession starting late in the second quarter and into the third quarter.

“It’s not about ratings,” Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo said. “It’s about winning and losing.”

The offense took advantage of that opening, tying the game by halftime and putting together a touchdown drive and a following field goal to open a 16-6 lead with 7:53 to play.

But the defense allowed the Cowboys to quickly drive 78 yards in 2:28. Romo connected with wide receiver Kevin Ogletree for a 20-yard touchdown to close the lead to 16-13 with just over 5 minutes to play.

It was then Rodgers’ turn. He converted on two key third downs to help the offense stay on the field and run the clock down to 22 seconds. Bryant then made a 32-yard field goal for the game’s final points to cap a 12-play, 66-yard drive that took 5:04 off the clock.

The Falcons did not get off to one of the trademark fast starts and had to fight hard just to scratch out a 6-6 halftime tie.

On Atlanta’s opening drive, fullback Lousaka Polite dropped a pass, Turner was stuffed on second down and Matt Ryan tossed an incompletion on third down.

Dallas’s Dwayne Harris, a Tucker High School product, took Matt Bosher’s punt and returned it 37 yards to set the Cowboys up at Atlanta’s 32-yard line. Linebacker Mike Peterson made a touchdown saving tackle.

The Cowboys drove to the Falcons’ 5 before their drive stalled. Dan Bailey came on a made a 23-yard field goal to make it 3-0.

Bryant, who was listed on the injury report with a back problem, missed a 37-yard field goal to end the Falcons’ second possession. He entered the game making 92.5 percent (148 of 160) of his field goal attempts under 40 yards and hadn’t missed one under 40 since the Cleveland Browns blocked a 30-yard attempt on Oct. 10, 2010. He wound up converted four of six attempts.

On the Cowboys next possession, Romo kept the drive alive by connecting with Kevin Ogletree on a third-and-20 for a 65-yard gain behind cornerback Dunta Robinson.

The defense held and Bailey came on and made a 32-yard field goal to make it 6-0.

The Falcons drove from their 27 to the Cowboys’ 27 before the drive stalled. Bryant made a 45-yard field goal to make it 6-3.

“This whole season we’ve been finding a number of ways to win football games; that’s the true test of a team, not just winning in one particular style of play,” Turner said.

The Falcons will have a chance to tie the franchise mark for most consecutive wins when they face the Saints at 1 p.m. Sunday in New Orleans. The Falcons won nine straight games in 1980 and 1998.

Montana — yes! I learned that this crew adjusts on the fly. I learned that we take what the other team gives us. I learned that we have creative play calling. I learned that Matt Ryan is a truly great QB. I learned that we have some of the best receivers in the NFL.

Virtually same personnel with different schemes. If you don’t think coaching matters take a look at this year’s Birds!

The time stamp on this forum has not been adjusted for daylight savings! Can you fix that, D Led? Remember, “Fall Back.”

Is it me or can you feel when Bryant will miss the FG?

He seems to miss the shorter ones, but is money from downtown.

A win is a win, we’re 8-0, that’s all that matters.

Would have loved to blown out the cowboys though, just to show that no loving media a thing or two.

great win – now have to win home field throughout playoffs. Maybe, just maybe, we can get to SB. Not sure the D can hold up against high powered offense though ( Dallas just too mistake prone). I am sorry, but Dunta just can’t play individual cover at all against good receiver. Don’t know what to do about it – he must be the best we have currently.

You know, I appreciate the fact that we are getting the prime time games now. But I could care less if I ever hear Collinsworth call another Falcons game (or any at that) again. He might as well had been on the Cowboys sidelines with a cheer leading uniform on! Probably the most annoyed I’ve ever been with the announcers.

I really have to say the D saved the day… early in the game the Cowboys got close to the end zone and had to settle for field goals…….. that is what kept the Falcon’s in the game.

Well played……….the defense deserve all the props they get for that showing last night !

I also think our kicker will make a come back….. all folks have a bad night occasionally, and he will win more big games than not.

I also like the attitude Mike Smith brings on the season, dividing it into 4 segments…. so far we won the first 2 segments…..the third part of the season will get tougher…but the coaching has been outstanding, and they way they played with guts throwing on the last drive was wonderful to see………..no 3 runs and punt !

Dunta Robinson and Asante Samuel got beat time and time again last night…they both remain totally useless and need to be benched. At some point, one of the two are going to cost the Falcons a game…they both almost cost it last night.

Matt Ryan is absolutely lucky to be alive today after the lack of blocking last night. The O-line was horrible, couldn’t block and the defense just as bad…no pass rush whatsoever and the missed tackles…tackle after tackle missed. I am extremely happy the Falcons won, but they could have easily beaten themselves.

Definitely cannot question the man’s toughness. The O line did a better job in the 2nd half. And Dallas has one of the better defensive fronts in the league.

GO Falcons..!!!

This game was probably the biggest test of the season so far. I know we keep saying this for every game but its true.

btw I heard Trent Dilfer say he was impressed with the falcons and admitted this is not the same team as last year. Its a start……Go BIRDS..

I am loving the 8-0 season and am a fan of the Falcons, win or lose. Last night I saw good coaching and determination to win get us by Dallas. It is very significant that this team can find a way to win close games. That doesn’t mean that I can’t comment on things I didn’t like. I didn’t like unopposed linemen whacking Ryan. I HATED the endless missed tackles (I thought we fixed that over the bye week??!?). Sorry, but Franks has to be the worst punt returner I have ever seen. We have to fix these things. But the fact that we found a way to beat a physical team, even with these faults, is encouraging. Make everyone hug their mother to figure out how to wrap up!

Did anyone one else find it soooo entertaining to hear Chris Collingsworth just shut up!
Just loved the way he told us what Dallas would do once they got the ball back at the end of the 1st half…..then just silence!

Every week I go to the other team’s Blog and see nothing but praises for the Franchise we are building. But when I come here it’s doom gloom after a win. Everyone has a bone to pick with some aspect of the team. Our corners did not give 100 yards to 2 different recievers. What I saw was anytime the pass rush gave Romo too much time he found a open reciever. Thats what Romo is paid to do. It’s a team sport and right now our team is playing the best,
