Atlanta Falcons: Offense grinds out points for victory

The numbers suggested the Falcons’ offense dominated.

Quarterback Matt Ryan passed for 342 yards, wide receivers Roddy White and Julio Jones each topped 100 yards receiving and Michael Turner churned out 100-plus yards rushing. Atlanta totaled 453 yards and had no turnovers.

And yet the Falcons scored just one touchdown Sunday night against the Cowboys. It was an important score, though, and Atlanta’s offense made enough other key plays to defeat the Cowboys 19-13 at the Georgia Dome.

“It’s ‘football tough’” Turner said. “It’s going to be like that sometimes. We have just got to figure out ways to get better and finish and score touchdowns.”

Turner’s three-yard touchdown on the second play of the fourth quarter staked the Falcons to a 13-6 lead. He set up the score with a 43-yard burst that gave Atlanta a first down at the Dallas 14.

Up to that point Turner had just 24 yards on 11 carries. Coach Mike Smith told Turner to stay patient because he’d been close to breaking some big runs in the first half.

“We was moving the ball well but we wasn’t getting any points out of it,” Turner said. “We missed a couple field goals. We just missed a couple opportunities to score. We finally punched it in and I think that got the whole team going a little bit.”

The Falcons would get into the red zone two more times and have to settle for Bryant field goals each time. But Atlanta’s final drive was crucial because it used 5:04 of the clock and forced Dallas to use all three of its timeouts.

Falcons running back Jacquizz Rodgers converted two third downs on that drive with nifty plays.

With about four minutes to play and Atlanta needing six yards for a first down, Rodgers leaked out of the backfield and took a short pass from Ryan.

“I had blitz responsibility but nobody came,” Rodgers said, “so I was wide open.”

Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick had a chance to tackle Rodgers soon after he caught the pass but Rodgers sidestepped him with a quick move to make it to the open field.

“That was second nature,” Rodgers said. “It was just instinct.”

Rodgers’ catch went for 31 yards and now Atlanta was near field-goal range and Dallas had to call its first timeout. The Cowboys were forced to use their final timeout when Rodgers again faked out a defender for an 11-yard reception on third-and-five.

That led to Matt Bryant’s fourth field goal, which was enough to seal the victory.

“We had some [missed] opportunities and we need to clean some things up and try to improve in some areas but at the end of the day it’s about finding ways to win,” Ryan said.

Way to go Angry Birds! Way to make adjustments in the 2nd half on defense “Nolan”. You can tell that Sports Announcer Cris Collinsworth was rooting for the Cowboys. It was never about what the Falcons were doing but about what the Cowboys needed to do to win the game. 8 & 0 baby! Cris need to pay up the bets that he lost

Wow! That was a great one! The Cowboys played a VERY good game; they just demonstrated the effect of a few errors and a few penalties. Tony Romo played like the Pro Bowl player that he is; no interceptions and lots of on-target passes while resisting pressure from the Falcons. Yet the Falcons prevailed with a model of consistent play throughout the game; very few errors or penalties. Both Falcons coordinators made highly effective adjustments and as a result, they got stronger as the game progressed. This is how you win football games and the Falcons have learned how to do it! They know what to work on to take them to the next level. They have one of the best passing attacks in the NFL and their defense is growing weekly. Now they need to bring the run attack up to that level and develop a red zone offense that will shock the toughest defenses in the NFL (like the Bears). With these great coaches and great players, that is very achievable. What fun it is to be a Falcons fan! GO FALCONS! YOU ARE RISING UP!

Thank you but I meant what I wrote. Though epitaph would have worked just as well, if not better. I just didn’t want anyone to think I wish him dead.

Congrats to the Falcons….but I have to ask – Did we really learn anything Sunday night to convince us that this season will end differently than 2010, when a top-seeded Atlanta team bowed out at home to Green Bay? Or 2011, when the Falcons face-planted in New York against the Giants?

I wish people would forget about 2010/2011 playoffs. This is an entirely different Falcon team. How can you doubters watch them for eight winning games and not see that? This Falcon team will make it deep into the playoffs, and possibly to the Superbowl.

The Falcons are playing some ‘Man’ football. Did anyone notice that not one word was said last night about how the Cowboys were able to come back on the mighty ‘Giants’ but were unable to make a miracle comeback against the Falcons. I am beginning to think that the media is ‘Regionally Biased’. The Bears at 7-1 get media attention like they are the next coming as the Falcons are scarcely mentioned. The game next week should really be a good test for the Falcons. I just hope Smitty reminds the team how they ran up the score on us last year just so Drew could break the record at home. I honestly hope that the Falcon’s defense is reminded of that.

You have got to love what the new coordinators are doing. Letting these guys play football for sixty minutes instead of going into stall conservative with a 7 point lead as in the days of old. It was a hard fought victory against the Cowboys (and Chris Collinsworth who needs replaced). Still not much honorable mention on ESPN as they were focused on Mr. Peyton M. and Chicago. It’s always how the other team didn’t play up to par instead of giving the Falcons credit for playing hard. You can rest assured the people who matter are aware of your efforts – YOUR FANS! Keep it up guys, we love it!!!! GO FALCONS!!!
