Lynch and Stockton can’t save Fox snoozer

This game was so boring Fox NFL color analyst John Lynch actually did everyone a favor by trying to drum up some excitement when the Eagles held the Falcons to a field goal in the third quarter.

Never mind that the Eagles still trailed 27-10. Forget that the Falcons had scored on all five of their possessions and that the Eagles seemed nervous about letting Michael Vick throw more than five yards down field.

By the standards of this game, “We held them to a field goal!” was a rallying cry for the Eagles.

“You see [defensive coordinator] Todd Bowles and his group celebrating,” Lynch said as Fox went to a commercial break. “Sometimes you have to celebrate the little victories. Life for the Philadelphia Eagles.”

Lynch sounded hopeful because this was not good television. Alas, Lynch and play-by-play man Dick Stockton had little to work with after halftime.

The Falcons were dominant and the Eagles were awful. Dead air doesn’t work on television so the duo tried to to create some drama whenever they could.

The closest the game came to getting interesting after halftime was when the Eagles trimmed the lead to 30-17 and then forced a three-and-out. That was Atlanta’s first punt of the game and nearly 10 minutes had elapsed in the fourth quarter.

“The Falcons will kick with 5:35 to go in a 13-point game!” Stockton said, sounding excited.

A penalty against Falcons linebacker Stephen Nicholas put the Eagles at the 50.

“Life for the Philadelphia Eagles,” Lynch said again, hopefully, but the Eagles remained lifeless.

Philadelphia fans, no doubt ornery for having to watch bad football in miserable weather, let the Eagles have it after three short passes and a run led to a turnover on downs.

“You are down 30-10: start getting the ball down field,” Lynch said. “I understand the game plan coming in. [The Falcons] are going to play off [in coverage], take what they give you, but that’s out the door right now.”

It was a good critique of Philadelphia’s inexplicable strategy. It also sounded like a plea from Lynch for the Eagles to please provide some excitement.

It never happened.

Vick playing ‘nervous’

Lynch relayed a conversation he and Stockton had with Vick in the week before the game.

“”Early this year, John, I was nervous and quite frankly I was worried about getting injured,’” Lynch said Vick told them. “I’ve got to go play football.”

“That was a great admission by him,” Stockton said.

It was great for Lynch and Stockton’s purposes of getting a good quote. It was not so great for a quarterback on the verge of losing his job.

Praise for Falcons

During the pregame, Lynch commented on the Falcons “flying under the radar” in spite of their record.

“Everybody is looking for something wrong about the Falcons,” Lynch said. “They are 6-0!. My kids tell me all the time, ‘Dad, don’t hate, congratulate.’”

Time to consult Urban Dictionary for some new slang for those quips.

Seriously, all of the Fox analysts generally praised the Falcons (when they talked about them at all). That’s true even though three of the five studio guys picked the Eagles to win the game (Philly was favored).

Also, Terry Bradshaw added the familiar asterisk next to Matt Ryan’s name.

“He came to the league in 2008 and so much was expected and he has delivered,” Bradshaw said. “If he’s had a flaw it’s that in three playoff appearances he’s lost all three of those football games.”

It may have been a snoozer, but as long as when we woke up from the game and the Falcons posted another win, then all is good…

I think the big question in the media today is who will start for the Jets next week….we are all on pins and needles….on a side note the Falcons won today and are 7-0, not that anyone noticed.

Again, if you want to hear good, extremely biased commentary, just turn down the Tv and listen to the Falcon Radio Network. They the only media that give the Falcon the love.

Hmmm…what was the purpose of this blog post. That game wasn’t boring.

We’re there is 30+ points being scored and the Eagles made a few drives, it’s was far from “BORING”.

Now that slog of game between UGA and UF yesterday was hard to watch and boring with 9 turnovers and few TDs!

Birds looked great today, despite what Spoon said about his ankle, seeing him on that cart terrified me. I really do hope he was ok. Felt great to whip up on the Eagles and Mike.

who care if it was boring we win they the media is and always going to say negative things about us until we we win a play off game but thats how it is lets kept flying under the radar they do not want us to to get any respect, thats cool I still want us to tackle better and go for the kill when we have the lead during the late part of the game it is no reason why we should have put up more point and got MR and the other starter out of ther earlier it should have been at least over 40 something to 10, well I will take it we are 7-0 looking for them cowgirls next 8-0 lets go, lets tackle better

Lynch and Stockton have to be two of the worst commentators currently on TV. Hopefully they won’t be available to handle another Falcons’ game for the remainder of the year.

NEWSFLASH: It was not a boring game for the “REAL” Atlanta Falcons’ fans!!!!! When the Falcons get that first playoff win this year, the Fox analysts will look for something else to complain about.

Stockton has always been an ATL hater….he also hated the Hawks back in the day. Biggest prob he has is that he should be considered brain dead.
I’ve written FOX Sports many times to complain about that bum covering our games.

They really got on my nerves today. At least once I noticed, possibly twice, after a nice run by Jacquizz Rodgers, Stockton said ” There goes Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie for the 1st down”. I mean, really…. isn’t it his job to know what he’s talking about?? They are not only on different teams, but one’s on offense and one’s on defense!! I couldn’t be the only one who noticed this!

No way Andy Reid has forgot how to coach. He has been too good to that town for them to turn on him when the QB with the most lost turnovers in the league tells the media that he is doing all he can so the team can win. The old coach killer is at it again.
Go Falcons!!!

I’m sure that if there were blogs during Miami’s run to an undefeated season, there would have been posters like just sayin and Gerry Janville. They woulda slammed the Dolphins all the way to the presentation of the Lombardi Trophy! They must need the attention in order to fulfill their mundane lives. Pay them no attention…that’s what they’re after. Do, however, pay attention to the play of our Birds! Like they say…”The proof is in the puddin’”. 7-0 is not a fluke. Sure, we aren’t perfect, but week after week, we become a more complete team. This week’s game plan was a thing of beauty. Kudos to Dirk… and to CMS and T. Dimitroff for the hiring of him. For the first time since ‘66, I really believe we have something special representing Atlanta in the NFL. Go Falcons!

Three media comments heard:

You haven’t played anyone: We can only play who is on our schedule…and whomever it has been..we have beaten them.

Atlanta is a Dome team: Falcons are 4-0…on the road…on grass. Including a game where the Redskins had no offensive touchdowns until the invincible RG3 (who did nothing against them) went down!

Not convinced until I see a Playoff win: You can’t win a playoff game until Playoffs start..until then…they can only win the games they play…every year is new…this COULD be the Falcons year,,,

‘Nuff said!!

The announcers were talking about how the Falcons came out and took control of the game and “never let their foot off the gas the whole game!!!” The did take control of the game, but MS will not shake his mentality of coasting when he has a lead. As explosive as the Eagles CAN be, the game was in question late into the 4th Qtr. As a long-time fan (since I was about 8 or 9 yrs old in ‘69-’70), I want to see a game where the Falcons truly DOMINATE lesser teams. Kinda like the way the Los Angeles Rams used to dominate us back when the Falcons were hapless…..

@ Coach D: Yep, a win is a win, but with all the talent the Falcons have, espcially on offense, I don’t like letting lesser teams remain in the game because that means all of our starters remain in the game. That increases the risk that one of them gets hurt and diminishes our chances for the ultimate goal: The Super Bowl!!!…..It is just good management to use your resources effectively and not expose them unnecessarily………..
