Atlanta Falcons: Is Michael Vick the ‘Coach Killer’?

FLOWERY BRANCH — Maybe the elder Jim Mora had it correct in 2006 when he concurred with the basic concept that then-Falcons quarterback Michael Vick was a “coach killer.”

Falcons coaches Dan Reeves and Jim Mora were fired while Vick was the quarterback.

Bobby Petrino signed on to coach Vick. But when Vick was suspended and eventually went to prison on federal dogfighting charges, Petrino grew tired of Joey Harrington and Byron Leftwich and went back to the college game.

Now, Andy Reid, the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL with the same team, is doing the rope-a-dope to retain his job.

With Vick manufacturing turnovers at an alarming rate, both men are in danger of losing their jobs as they prepare to face the Falcons at 1 p.m. Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said Reid’s status will become clear at the end of the season. Reid said he is not ready to walk away from the job he’s held since Jan. 11, 1999.

“I haven’t gotten to that moment,” Reid said when asked if he was ready for his tenure in Philadelphia to end. “I can tell you no. I haven’t felt that way. We love the city of Philadelphia as a family. I’m very fortunate to be doing what I’m doing. I can’t tell you that I’ve haven’t come to that point.”

Reid has battled through the death of his son, Garrett, from a drug overdose Aug. 5, and the Eagles have a 3-3 record. But they have lost three of their past four games.

Vick, as he did sometimes during his tenure in Atlanta, is treating the football like it’s a hand grenade. He’s had five fumbles and eight interceptions to grease the Eagles’ slide.

Reid sent a message to Vick and the rest of his teammates by firing defensive coordinator Juan Castillo on Oct. 16.

“It sends a message to everybody,” Vick said. “Coach made it clear that if he felt like you weren’t performing up to your potential or his standards, then you are just going to be sitting beside him.”

Vick is backed by rookie Nick Foles and veteran Trent Edwards. Vick knows that if he doesn’t eliminate the turnovers, that he’s likely next before Reid’s firing squad.

“I just have to stay focused on going out there and when I’m out there, getting the job done,” Vick said. “I can’t play looking over my shoulder. I can’t play worrying about getting taken out if things do not go right. If that’s what happens, then I’ll just stand tall and keep pushing until the next (time).”

Vick knows he has to eliminate the turnovers.

“I’m trying to make all of the corrections that I can before Sunday,” Vick said. “The most important thing is that I have to protect the football. If we do that, we give ourselves a chance to win the game.”

Reid said the coaches can help Vick.

“Coach is trying to insinuate that they can maybe help us out with the play-calling, but still, at the end of the day, the ball is in my hands,” Vick said. “Just like last week against Detroit, I can’t throw the ball up in the air and pray for a guy to make a play. I’ve got to be accurate. … It’s not the coach’s responsibility. It’s my job to correct it.”

One way the Eagles could help Vick is to rely more on running back LeSean McCoy, who appears to be under-utilized. The Falcons are giving up 143.8 yards rushing per game and rank 28th of 32 teams against the run.

“Yeah, I think we’re going to have to run the football and be able to create different looks from the defense,” Vick said. “That’s going to be important. We have to make sure that we get him going. He’s a big part of our offense.”

Reid has posted a 139-93-1 record and is 13-0 after his team’s bye week. He knows a lot is on the line for himself and his quarterback.

“If you ask any player or coach in this league, they are going to tell you that’s all part of this game,” Reid said. “You always have that there, so what you do is, as opposed to focusing in on what you can’t control, you focus in on what you can control and that’s getting yourself better. … That’s the approach that Mike takes and I take [and] our players take and coaches take.”

No, Mike Vick is a DOG killer. He is the ruination of a coach’s career, a social miscreant and just not worth the protoplasm.
But he doesn’t ‘kill’ coaches. He’s at least got that going for him.

NO! Mora got fired after a single season in Seattle because he had no control of the locker room.

Mora got fired in Atlanta for making comments about another coaching job on a radio show; also, he had lost control of the locker room.

Reeves had let the game pass him by. If I recall, he got fired the season Vick missed with injury. Our team had drafted poorly and couldn’t compete without Vick. it was an embarrassment.

Vick has rarely dominated like he should, and turns the ball over too much. But his coaches have all struggled with personnel choices, too.

This time it’s not Vick’s (eeerrrrrr the Dog Killer, the STD spreader) fault. Reid will be fired for moving his OL coach, and promoting him to defensive coordinator. Two years later the Eagles defense is one the worse in the league.

Mike Vick is 3-3. Phillip Rivers, Payton Manning, Tony Romo and Ben Rothlesberger are also 3-3. Drew Brees, Sam Bradford and Ryan Fitzpatrick are all below .500. Funny the only name you hear about possibly losing his job is Mike Vick.

Vince Young has a 31-19 record as a pro quarterback yet the guy who decided whether or not he would play in Buffalo has a 30-52 record as a pro head coach. I just don’t understand.

Yeah I’m saying it. There is a double standard when it comes to Black quarterbacks a standard that bums like Phillip Rivers, Carson Palmer, Matthew Stafford and Joe Flacco never have to concern themselves with. If the standard for greatness is winning a Super Bowl then take Dan Marino and Jim Kelly out of the HOF. If the standard is a better win than loss record the shut up and apply that to everyone, and threaten everyone at the position who is “under performing”.

Vick is not a coach killer, and I will give you some facts in his defense. Ok, the first coach fired, while Vick was playing as his Quarterback was Dan Reeves, and Dan Reeves was fired because he put in the then “Franchise Quarterback”, Micheal Vick in a Pre-Season game, and Vick’s received a season ending injury, and Dan Reeves and his coaching staff could not make the adjustments, which resulted in a dismal season for the Falcons, which resulted in Dan Reeves being fired. Dan Reeves was fired because he couldn’t make adjustments after loosing one player, and not due to Micheal Vick’s poor performance. Second case, Jim Mora Jr., Mora was not a good coach, he never had a good mix of plays, his play calling was vanilla, it was either run the ball or throw it to Crumpler, because our receivers can’t catch, which was true, but his coaching staff never tried anything different. Jim Mora Jr.’s plan for every game was “Ok recivers you can’t catch so block, running backs your’re average so block, Crumpler you’re good so you’ll get the ball every now and then, otherwise block, and Vick just do your magic”, lack of play calling. As for Andy Reid, he should have been fired when McNabb got traded, he has done nothing with the plethera of talent they had in Philly since he has been there, and his play calling over the years have been too conservative, in times when it should have been explosive, and the only other coaches, that I can think of that has done less with lots of talent, Norv Turner and Rex Ryan. Also, the reasons why Andy Ried is on the hot seat is that in 10+ yrs he has been there and loads of talent, he can’t produce a superbowl winning team, and the other reason is that Philly put him in a position to fail, because when you go out and spend all that money in free agency, and put absolutely no money in protecting your franchis e QB, you are doomed to fail.

Jamaaliver

October 25th, 2012
9:21 am

Mora got himself fired for lack of control in the locker room, and his comments on the radio about his ‘dream job’.

Reeves got fired because the game had passed him by, and because his poorly drafted team couldn’t perform when Vick was out injured.

Vick ain’t perfect, but his coaches have all had more than a few reasons to be let go. Andy Reid let his O-Line coach be in charge of the defense. Yet seemed suprised that his defense couldn’t hold leads late.

1. Dan Reeves, Victim of circumstance
2. Jim Mora Jr., Lack of play calling
3. Andy Ried, Conservative play calling, and Philly’s poor bad investments in Free Agency

what of it?

October 25th, 2012
9:40 am

Absolutely, it was entirely Vick’s fault that Mora couldn’t control his emotions with the press or keep from saying dumb things. It’s also Vick’s fault that Mora continues to struggle with coaching UCLA in a relatively light-weight PAC-10. Clearly Andy Reid cannot help but make questionable challenges and horribly managed timeouts due to Vick’s efforts on the field. Let us not forget Vick’s part in single-handedly destroyed not just Reeves’ ‘98 superbowl bid but also his two with Elway and the Broncos in the 80’s. What else would explain losing with a future hall of fame quarterback. In fact, the league should expel Vick to prevent any further harm to its coaches.

I’m a loyal Falcons fan but if Michael Vick holds on to the ball, he can still be a game changer. He has gotten more accurate and more consistent than he was in Atlanta. He still holds the ball loose and out of control when he scrambles though, just like a grade schooler… never could figure out why he can’t learn that fundamental skill. He does have other compensating skills however. I’m glad we have the QB we do though. The Eagles problems go deeper than the QB… if the whole team plays up to their potential, they will win. If the Falcons have been learning and growing during the bye week, they will win. I actually think that rain will benefit the Eagles. LeShawn McCoy is a premier running back and they can block for him. I really hope to see the Falcons’ O-Line breaking out this week though and if that happens, the game belongs to the Falcons. DOL you dn’t know what you’re talking about Mike Vick carried the Falcons father with less to work with in the history of the franchise.Outside of Chris chandler and when we went to the Superbowl Dan Reeves choaked who hands off and screen toss to your back all season and wait until you get to the show to pick it 7 yards deep to J. Anderson.Who gets to the show and doesn’t use anything you did to get there Dan did that n not just in that Superbowl but everyone he’s been in trying to out think the other team he stoped us before they did.And Jim Morra and his dad suck at coaching if that’s what they call it his idea of ajusting are game after half time was to keep the same plays just put Vick in the shotgun.A lot of people can knock Vick but he has done something no other player on an Atlant Falcon’s roster has ever done say what you want he put this team on the radar.

Chris Chandler took us to the Superbowl even that year we had blackouts Mike Vick took us deeper into the play off with less he had to under sized receivers in there mid 30’s and still what Matt couldn’t do with 2 pro bowl caliber receivers and a slot man that any other team would love to have yep Vick had Crump but Matt has the al powerful A. Gonzalez and for the record he couldn’t hit water if he fell off a boat. Mike Vick a Coach Killer tell Andy to ring him out of the pocket if his line can’t block and he was also under the gun when McNabb was there….

Matt Ryan wasnt even in the conversation. The article is about Vlck being a coach killer. Are you comparing Vlck to Jim Kelly and Dan Marino??? I didn’t say lack of Superbowl wins gets a coach fired. Its the lack of knowing how to play QB.

Matt Ryan and what he has done for the Falcons shouldn’t even be questioned. Vick ranks low on the Falcon QB all time list under Bartkowski, Chandler, Ryan, Hebert and even Chris Miller. No comparison, Vick was a fly by night in Atlanta.

Vick intentionally or not, due to his chronic ability to fail to live up to potential, sets up his coach for failure. Vick is a cancer. He is just pocketing the Eagles’ cash – he has just learned how to smooze with the press better and “say the right things’.

How can a 4x Pro Bowler be in lack of knowing how to play the position? Are the talent evaluators not capable of proper assessment.

This article isn’t mentioning Mike Vick’s lack of knowing how to play at the position, it’s talking about turnovers which every QB commits. You seem like many others to want to place a lack of mental capacity for fumbles and interceptions. My point is if that’s the case we can make the same argument against many quarterbacks without their “lack of knowing how…” ever coming into the conversation.

If he didn’t have the capacity he wouldn’t have made 4 Pro Bowls as an NFL QB and this argument could be supported by the list of guy’s whom I would assume, you would say don’t suffer from your perceived “lack” but have never made a Pro Bowl or have any post season victories under their belts

Exactly!! Dled, you’re killing me here with the MV7 filter.

Anyways, when your QB does not know how to read defenses, learn progressions, learn from mistakes, hold a football when running, slide, or know when to throw the ball away… you have problems.

Paranoid Android,

Where do you coach? The article I’ve read is talking about turnovers. You seem to have some insight into the minds of QB evaluators. I think 4 Pro Bowl selections and a 2-2 playoff record kind of blows your perceived “lack of” argument out of the water.

Ok. So you are saying turnovers are the topic? Turnovers caused by lack of knowing how to play QB. Not knowing how to read defenses CAUSES TURNOVERS, not protecting the ball causes turnovers, trying to force the ball causes turnovers!! Pro bowl is popularity contest, it does not prove his value as a QB.

So Payton Manning’s 3 picks against the Falcons are from “lack of”? Phillip Rivers throwing 4 against Denver is from “lack of”? You’re telling me they don’t know what they’re doing?

Your position holds no water since the metrics for making your determination can be used to put 2/3 of the QB’s in the league in the “having lack” category. If he couldn’t play the position he wouldn’t be there.

And they are in the way!! We will be playing AGRESSIVE, SLICK, AND NASTY against these Eagles. WE WILL TAKE NO PRISONERS!!! WE ARE HUNGRY!!! Our offense will run NASTY, BLOCK NASTY, AND PASS AND CATCH ARTISTICALLY. IT WILL BE A THING OF BEAUTY. Sunday, IT’s THE EAGLES. “IT’S TIME TO KILL A COACH ON SUNDAY!!”. It’s time to kill him in “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!”. We will make the funeral arrangements after the game in Philly. And we will send flowers while we are on the plane back to Atlanta with a win. WE WILL GIVE NO EULOGY. It’s on to the next game. WE TAKE THEM “ONE AT A TIME” playing with “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!”. Are you serious?

- Reid has one of the best running backs in the league, and refuses to run the ball like he should.
- Reid put the OL coach in charge of the defense.
-Reid’s undoing was caused by Reid, and not those that work under his supervision.

The other coaches that you named, Mora, Reeves, Petrino…what are they doing this season?

-Was the Falcons their first and only coaching job?
-Who killed them at their other coaching stops, from which they were forcible removed?
- Mora Jr. may be still coaching (in college, after Seattle kicked him out), but he can’t keep his foot out of his mouth @ UCLA.

Is this lazy journalism, or pressure to get a story up quickly? Very few reporters work to get an original story now. Everyone is looking @ twitter, and other social media to get a quick hit story, and stir up the masses.

Vick has never been consistent. When he’s playing well, he plays real well. But when he’s playing badly, he plays pretty darned bad. There’s never any warning to know when a bad game is at hand or, contrarily, when he’s about to light the sky up with fireworks.

That is indeed deadly for coaches because they love the fireworks show and want to have it… the problem is that it just doesn’t come around every Sunday. You never know what to expect.

I recall former Falcon Jeff George’s attempt to rein in his erratic performances by way of emotional counseling sessions and meditation. Maybe Vick needs to spend an off-season in Kathmandu…

“I’m trying to make all of the corrections that I can before Sunday,” Vick said. “The most important thing is that I have to protect the football.”

What I have a hard time understanding is WHY Vick has been allowed to run around with the ball in his HAND, so that anyone can easily knock it right out. Dan Reeves, Jim Mora, Andy Reid….seems to me that one of these coaches should have sat him down and said, “If you are not going to secure the ball, you’re going to play.” Had someone done this years ago, it probably wouldn’t still be a problem today. Is Vick uncoachable, and just too stupid to do it? Or are his coaches to spineless to demand it? I guess good fundamental football is too much to ask of “elite” players.

Vick wasnt a “coach killer”
1) Dan Reeves- probably the best coach Vick had honestly. Vick’s broken leg and Reeves ancient play-calling did him in. (I still have flashes of Woody Danzler taking direct snaps and all 11 men on the other side of the ball knowing what was coming.lol) They actually worked well together.
2) Jimmy Boy Mora- Such a mixed bag with this character. His mouth killed him more than anything. Not to mention being a little too partial to your players…also the second half season collapses we came to know. Lastly, any coach who let’s Greg Knapp run their offense won’t be a head coach for long. He’s working wonders in OAK right now.lol)
3) Puke-trino- This guy was a butt itch from the very beginning. He gave us nothing. He was a selfish coward who’s karma came back around on him last year. We can only wonder what he’d have done eith Vick…but when your coaching staff is yelling at grown men like they’re still in college….I dont think morale would be that great. He was a team killer.
4) Andy Reid- Come on guys. He’s be on and off the hot seat for years. I think his time may finally be up and it so happens that Vick is his QB. His stubborn affection for the pass while he has a pro bowl RB is the stuff of legend, and lets not forget promoting his OFFENSIVE LINE coach to run the ENTIRE DEFENSE. If anything, these factors alone are building his demise as head coach of the Eagles.

My humble opinions. What else say you Birdland?

Vick is not a coach killer. Dan Reeves’s time was long gone, Mora’s teams collapsed in the second half of the season two years in a row when coaching really counts in the NFL (not to mention his comment about being willing to leave for another job in the middle of the playoff hunt in 2006), and do I really need to say anything about Petrino? If Andy Reid gets fired at the end of this year, it won’t be because of Michael Vick. It will be because he is out of time and excuses. @AlBruce7

It amazing that STDB4 was nowhere to be found for 5 week. Let the Saint win 2 game and you can’t shut him up.

Dan Reeves’s time in the NFL had passed, Jim Mora Jr.’s teams collapsed in the second of the season twice, not to mention his comments about being willing to leave the Falcons for another job in the middle of the playoff hunt in 2006, and do I really need to say anything about Petrino? If Andy Reid gets fired it will be because he is out of time (13 seasons) and excuses, not because of Michael Vick.

This blog by D-LED is lame, just like his Fal-cons..

They have beaten 6 straight opponents with a combined record of 47-65. Yawn……

If Ryan goes 0-4, watch his deer in headlight coach get his walking papers

NFC Championship win or bust..Bar set lower. No shot at a SB.. This QB= Tony Romo -1..

There are clinics and hospitals for people who do nothing but hate. In fact, nearly the entire fan base of the NO saints may be eligible if the Falcs with the SB in their beloved shack. Care and treatment is far better than seeing so many wig-out and hurting someone.

So glad M. &ick is a THEM problem and not an US problem. Good riddence. Flicking off the fans…weed in Miami Dade airport…last one to practice 1st to leave…telling reporters he did his job cause he rushed for over 1000 yrds (he was asked what he could do better after another losing season). Glad he is a THEM problem. #2 is my QB hands down

It’s unfortunate that black people are so racist that they will defend someone like MV against whatever he does. Like running to AB and whinning about “Dan makes me stay in at night, watch film and brings my mother here to watch me like a child” So Dan was fired, MV never studied the game or applied himself. What he could be is not what he is and never will be. BTW, theres a black man in the White House so put the race card away, that ship has long sailed. Grow up and be responsible, expect the same from everyone else. geeez!

Dan Reeves was fired because he couldnt stand up to his own player, Eugene Robinson and BENCH HIM for the superbowl in 1998. Instead, coach reeves was a coward by not disciplining robinson and suspending him for the superbowl, causing the distration (eugene robinson) to not be in the building at the time the falcons were busy at work. Robinson played the WORST game of his life in the superbowl, the the other falcons were clearly distracted as the Falcons played their worst game of the season that year and lost big to Elway, Terrell Davis and the Broncos. Had Robinson not played the Falcons would have accomplished what they had accomplished earlier that year when the FALCONS HAD BEAT THE BRONCOS ALREADY IN THE REGULAR SEASON. Most fans dont realize that, except the die-hard fans such as myself. The falcons had proved already that they were better than the Broncos, but for the Falcons to win the game, Dan Reeves should have SUSPENDED Eugene Robinson and dropped him from the roster for that BIG GAME. Reeves caved in and and decided to give robinson a break and it cost reeves his first superbowl title as a head coach. I feel bad for Reeves because Reeves will be remembered as the guy who took the Broncos to several superbowls along with the Falcons AND COULDNT WIN ONE, due to poor decisions from himself. Reeves cost us the superbowl because reeves made the dicision to play robinson when he should have benched him.
