The Falcons enter their bye week as the only undefeated team in the NFL with a two-victory lead over the rest of the NFC.
They don’t talk like a 6-0 squad, though, because they have hardly looked the part of a juggernaut.
That’s probably why, following Atlanta’s 23-20 victory over Oakland on Sunday, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan cited the team’s undefeated record on the one hand and acknowledged troublesome trends on the other.
“We’ve been good enough to win and at the end of the day, that’s what you need to do,” Ryan said. “I think it’s going to be important for us, this bye week, to try and find ways for us to play our best and to look critically at ourselves and try and improve.”
Style doesn’t count in the standings, but the quality of Atlanta’s play is regressing even as the victories keep coming.
Atlanta’s problems both running the ball and stopping the run are still apparent and the secondary’s knack for making big plays has masked problems with pass coverage and tackling. Atlanta’s offensive line play has been inconsistent and the limitations of a pass-heavy offense reliant on Ryan are starting to show.
The Falcons have some time to sort things out. Their next game is Oct. 28 at Philadelphia.
“Our goal is try to be better tomorrow than today,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said Monday. “There are times that we take steps forward and times we take steps back.”
While earning another another victory Sunday, Atlanta took another step back after opening the season with convincing victories against the Chiefs, Broncos and Chargers. The Falcons got past Oakland (1-4) only when Matt Bryant kicked a 55-yard field goal with one second left in the game.
It was the third time in three games Atlanta had to rally to win in the fourth quarter.
“This game took a lot out of us as a defense (so) this off week, in those respects, is right on time,” Falcons defensive back Dunta Robinson said. “We’ve still got a long season ahead of us. We are not where we want to be. We are 6-0 going into the bye (but) we know we are going to get everybody’s best shot so we’ve got to take it to another level.”
The Raiders found themselves stride for stride with the Falcons with a suddenly rejuvenated offense and some ball-hawking defense. Smith said close games between seemingly mismatched opponents and upset losses in the NFL reinforce the notion that “each week is a hard battle.”
Still, the Falcons have yet to play a contender. The combined record of their six opponents, discounting their losses to Atlanta: 11-15.
Smith and his staff have plenty to work on during the off week.
Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter prefers a balanced attack but last week said the best approach was to put the game in Ryan’s hands because the quarterback’s play had been superlative. That strategy didn’t pay dividends against Oakland; Ryan wasn’t as sharp while tossing three interceptions.
Ryan faced a heavy pass rush and Atlanta had virtually no running game to relieve the pressure. Ryan’s 15-yard scramble was its longest run of the game. The Falcons totaled 45 yards on 15 attempts after gaining 83 yards on 28 attempts at Washington the week before.
Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, stressing that winning is the bottom line, acknowledges that his unit’s struggles to stop the run could eventually cost the Falcons. That nearly happened against the Raiders, who churned out 149 yards on 32 attempts. Shoddy tackling has become another issue.
The Falcons will address those weaknesses and others.
“I think the really good thing about this football team is they are not satisfied,” Smith said. “There is a desire in there to play better football. We’ve been very fortunate.”

It is always fun to FIRST !!!!..As predicted the center of our defense is soft and vulnerable. Our OL is really struggling. Yes we are lucky to be 6-0 and I hope we can continue. However, we must become better at stopping the run and more aggressive in our pursuit of the opposing QB. I do belive M Turner has lost a step and J Rodgers is not-Warrick Dunn. Every single day, EVERY single day, I see some article from the AJC about how Atlanta doesn’t deserve its undefeated record. You know what, THEY scored more points than their opponents, that’s all that matters in the NFL. We aren’t looking to break the Dolphins records here, I think I speak for all of the fans, and all the players when I say, we have ONE goal, the Superbowl. The fact is, Atlanta is closer to the homefield in the playoffs than Anybody else. Keep it up Falcons! I don’t care how you win, and please beat that Joke of a QB up in Philly!

RUN THE BALL!!!!! Turner started off strong then we absolutely forgot about him. He has always been a guy that needs 20+ carries to be effective because he wears down defenses. Start Mike Pete at Mlb!!Daunte has been quite the surprise this season. Our safeties are unbelievable and have saved touchdown after touchdown as the opposing runnin backs have embarassed our front 7. THANK GOD FOR #55. To think I was advocatin lettin him go this offseason(monetary reasons). He is playing like he wants a ring AND a bust in canton. 20 more sacks and hes a lock

It is obvious that it is a slow Falcons news story week since the Falcons have a bye week. So, now is the time that all of the stories will be surfacing about how the team has not earned the 6 and 0 record…..e.g., it’s just luck….haven’t played a team with a winning record, etc……
In the big scheme of things…..DOES IT REALLY MATTER HOW THEY WIN?…..BUT THAT THEY DO WIN THE GAMES!!!!!! GO FALCONS!!!!!

I hear ya Michael M.lol Some is negative but some is true. Although Turner is damn near a shell of his former self, we still need him in the run game. He honestly looked like he could have gotten going against Oakland. We got too pass happy. Quizz is starting to show he may not be the back of the future for us as far as the workhorse back. Maybe the line forgot they can run block too?lol Its just amazing to see how we’ve been run heavy for 4 seasons and have had almost the same group..yet this year they cant do it. I watched the line and they didnt really give ANY holes. Thats on Pat Hill to fix. Bottom line though Birdland is that we still sit 6-0 atop the NFC and have 2 weeks to fix whats going on. The real schedule starts soon so we need to be ready. I totally agree with Senior Falcon. Block, TACKLE (for the love of humanity PLEASE learn how to wrap up guys!!!), and run. I still say we’re an 11-5 team. We shall soon see.

Dear ESPN and AJC:
I give up… you win. I am no longer a proud fan of the 6-0 Falcons… a team I have followed through thick and thin, richer and poorer, in sickness and health since 1968. What was the happiest football season I had known since 1998… has become a nightmare of dark innuendo and endless speculation.
I can no longer stand the constant barrage of negativity so… congrats for destroying the marriage.

The Falcons are 6-0 and the national media is blasting them for not destroying every opponent. ABSURD! People keep talking about the playoffs but the team can’t do anything about that until they get there. As of right now, THEY LOOK LIKE AN ABSOLUTE LOCK to make it. As a long suffering fan of this team, I’ve seen many years that these games where they are squeaking by with a victory, ended with a loss. THAT’s THE DIFFERENCE PEOPLE!!! They are actually winning them this year. Only some transplanted newcomer to town would knock a 6-0 record. You really can’t please those people anyway because of their alligence to THEIR home team. WHICH BY THE WAY IS NOT 6-0. So all of you displaced Katrina victims, New England migraters, and rust belt runaways can GO TO HELL…or at least back to that place that was so great that YOU HAD TO LEAVE. GO FALCONS!!!!!

We’re all Falcon fans here, so we’re more aware than most how fast things can go downhill. ..a crucial few injuries can be a killer–of all the fanbases in the league– we’re aware of these things. We also now know how quickly it can be turned around with the right people pulling in the same direction. The whole organization has to stay focused on milestones & goals and that’s a lot of folks having to “just do your job” to pull off the kind of season we’re all hoping for. Practically all the problems we’re having are fixable with the exception of injuries. I don’t see ANY reason to break out the life vests yet….

The Falcons have a lot of work to do.. They are good.. but if we go up against the Giants right now.. we are going to get blown out of the park.. You have to figure out a way to neutralize the opponents defensive line. It is like our offensive line forgot how to run block. The holes for turner or rogers are not there. I can’t for the life of me figure out why Rogers can’t break one with his speed. He is questionable to me.. We will find out what we’re made of when we go into Philly and then the following week Dallas at home.

Folks ,,, the criticism is warranted. If they can’t take a team like Oakland to the woodshed at home, they will struggle mightily against the Giants or any team that makes the postseason. How can a QB like Ryan, who is a 4th quarter wizard and will give him that much, not QB sneak the ball for a TD with the ball at the 2 inch line. See last years playoff embarrassment and the NO game when he couldn’t get 6 inches. Now we are starting to see them resemble who they really are, versus the first 3 games – getting bailed out by the D. Ryan is going way more to his blanky Gonzo and less to White and Jones, Turner is just not the back he once was, so I predict that they lose the next 3 games against Philly, Dallas and NO, win against AZ, lose to TB, win against NO, lose against Carolina, NYG and Detroit, and finsih with a win at home against TB ,, for a realistic 9-7 record and miss the playoffs.

Bopro … you gotta quit getting so emotional. I don’t hate the Falcons, but I have my head on right about the fact that they could easily be 4-2 versus 6-0. I have followed them for a long long time and want them to win more than ever, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to turn into a blind man. They are not anything to get too excited about, because they can easily be man handled like they were in the playoffs last year and against GB the year before. They definitely seem to be better coached on O & D, but that is not going to make up for the fact that Ryan lacks as a dominating QB. Great under pressure of 4th quarter, but average until then.

Hey Y’all:
6-0 is great !! The “PROCESS” is continuing. Yes, we have some things to “FIX” on offense and defense. We have been playing together in “ONE HEARTBEAT!” as we are getting through these wins. However, the “FIXES” have to come quick for we are moving into some “FUN” and “COMPETITIVE” games in the second half of the seasons. Our offensive line have to tighten things up in the running game. They could not move the defensive line of the Raiders 2 inches at the goal line to get a touchdown. Remember, these are the same linemen from” last year” who had difficulty in moving inches against other teams in the leauge that we played last year. No offense, but they have to get better in moving defensive linemen in order to make holes. If they can’t do it, let the “ROOKIES” that we drafted get a chance to see what they can do. PUT THEM IN THE FIRE TO GET BATTLE TESTED!!! We are coming down to aggressive defensive teams like the Giants, who destroyed our line last year. We will see them again, and other defensive front four like them. What changes have we made on the offensive line to beat these guys as compared to last year. They are in our way towards the Super Bowl. We better be ready to defeat them. Will our new offensive schem work to do it? I do not think so. The line currently are not busting holes for Turner or the other running backs in this offensive line blocking scheme. I believe it’s the personnel. And if we are going to continue winning and getting to the Super Bowl, if they do not play better against better defensive fronts against the run and pass, then they need to be changed.
Our defensive interior needs to get more NASTY. They appear to not have the ability to shed blockers, on a consistant basis, and as a team, in getting to the running backs and the quarterback. WE NEED SOME BIG, IMMOVABLE, MOBILE OBJECTS IN THERE TACKLING RUNNERS IN THE BACKFIELD AND SACKING QUARTERBACKS. I am more than confident this will get fixed in some manner, with the addition of Corey Peter, but he will need help from the rest of the guys up there. ITS TIME TO GET DURTY AND NASTY FELLAS. THE SUPPR BOWL RUN STARTS WHEN YOU GET OUT OF THIS “BYE” WEEK. Get ready in “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!!”. I HEAR YOU GUYS COMING. “THUMP!!! YOU’RE GETTING LOUDER!!! THUMP… THUMP!!!! ……..!!!!. LET’S DO THIS!!!!
GO FALCONS!!!!!!
THE “PROCESS” CONTINUES TO THE SUPER BOWL.
“FALCONS, RISE UP!!! WE “RISE UP!!” IN “ONE HEARTBEAT!!!”

True fans will tell their team the truth. That Coach Smith and others are saying what we already know is a start.. Geting the best out of the players we have is a moving in the right direction but until we start fixing the glaring problems our team has, we will never get any further than one and done in the playoffs. I agree with Arthur Blank when he says making it to the playoffs is not good enough.

Can we review the last two weeks of weakness? Redskins at home off a 10 day rest. 10 days versus 7 days makes a difference. Being at home makes a difference. Three advantages to Redskins: rest prep and homefield.
Oakland off the bye week. Two weeks of rest. Two weeks of prep. Home field to Atlanta.
Folks, that’s two teams back to back that have been better rested and more time to prepare. YET Atlanta WON.
The only real problem I see with Atlanta is Matty Ice coming in nervous/cold. I can’t tell if it’s just gameday jitters or him just being off. But Ryan’s performance improves through the game with his mistakes coming early on.

This is a very good team…arguably the best Falcons team in history, but they do have some issues. The O-Line needs to protect Ryan better and open holes for Turner to run through. The D-Line needs to get better at stopping the run and our secondary has to learn to tackle better. Winning is what matters in the NFL. This isn’t college, where if you barely beat a losing team, you could drop in the rankings. Whether they win “ugly” or “pretty”…it ultimately does not matter. A win is a win, but they can’t play like they have been playing and expect to beat the Giants or 49ers. I’m glad they have the bye week to tweak some things, so hopefully we’ll continue the winning trend no matter who we play! RISE UP FALCONS!!

Not a Turner hater. He’s my fantasy back and I own an authentic Turner jersey.
With that said I’m THRILLED we’re winning via the pass. On our offense alone Turner would be the #5 threat (behind Ryan, Roddy, TG, and Julio). SO WHY FORCE the offense thru him?!!! Like GB, he should consider himself a complimentary piece, execute when called on (vs tiptoeing), and shut up/play ball.
A true leader will accept the role -Especially when we’re winning with it- and be a professional doing it.

All these nitpickers after the win on Sunday. These blogger/columnists/so-called-”experts” need to remember that this is the NFL.
Many coaches have said that the margin for error is thissssss close in this league. Why is anyone still ’surprised” when Oakland comes in a plays the Falcons tough? Bills win at Arizona. Seattle beating New England. It happens all the time.
These writers have a lot of time on their hands and a lot of space to fill, so they come up with a breakdown of a 6-0 team. Why don’t the Super Bowl Champion Giants win every game? Come on. Why are the Packers “only” 3-3? What’s wrong beyond firing the DC up in Philly?
This is the NFL. There isn’t going to be perfection. Not in a season. Not in a game.
Think how far the Falcons have come as a franchise since 2008. They are just now getting to the point where I think things will really begin coming together. The passing game is better equiped
to be the focal point of this team than ever before. Yes, the OL blocking and running game issues must be corrected. They will be. Quizz will continue to get more touches, as he should.
On D tackling and wrapping up will be stressed and executed. Some solid run defeders should be coming back from injury.
It will all come down to how they play against teams like the Cowboys, Giants and Saints. The Falcons must beat those teams to stay in the upper group of teams in the NFL. And then win in the playoffs.
The national media is never going to give this team a lot of love. They must go earn all they get themselves. They will be focused to do that. The Falcons are a lot more explosive this season on offense and defense. But they have not been a team that is built to blow people out. Just to win by 3-7 points in most games.
MS and Company will continue to improve and win win lots of games. They are in good hands. You can’t have 34-10 every week in this league. Falcons will be just fine.

Back on point, I like that we squeaked out a win against an inferior opponent going into the bye week. The players are fully aware that they could easily have lost this game and will be focused on Philly, who you know is desperate right now. Definitely better than them blowing the Raiders out and going into the break thinking they’ve got this thing in the bag.

So the Falcons are fortunate to be 6 – 0 going into the bye week. Does that mean when the Falcons may have been 5 – 0 or 3 – 3 going into a bye week that it was unfortunate? Who said all wins must come pretty; if they do then it’s said that they are playing sub par teams. The name of the game is to win and it really do not matter if they blow teams out or that wins are close. A win is a win, especially in professional sports. Again, the name of the game is to win, regardless how you do it. The alternative is a loosing record and I will take any team with this record…

People like to point out that the records of the teams teh falcons have beaten is bad. The faclons have spent most of the season playing the AFC. Might I point out that there are only two teams in the AFC with winning records. The falcons don’t make their schedule but regardless not many teams reach 6-0 so something can be said for this, if not more teams would do it. The regular season is about making sure you get into the playoffs and tweaking your team as you go along to overcome injuries and fixing the things that are going wrong . Right now the falcons are doing the best at putting themseleves in position to make the playoffs. that’ really all you can say about them. Are they the besst team? Right now that doesn’t really matter. It only matters when the playoffs start.

Our offensive line is……offensive. If this doesnt change, change in terms of personnel, not in terms of getting proven inadequecy to suddenly turn into pro bowlers, all this talk is just more talk. It’s irrelevant. Bottom line, Dimitroff and company have ignored the greatest need on this team for years….and now it’s beginning to show big time. Hawley. PULEEASE. Johnson is a bust. Baker is a bigger one. McClure is what…45 now…and Clabo is now what we’ve come to learn as just the right hip of Harvey Dahl. If this line is not improved and soon. We will likely see a repeat of the last 4 years….make the playoffs, whoop dee do, and out in one.

11-5 is still a very respectable record. We saw what happened at 13-3.lol
Oh yeah, I could care less about the media’s opinion. They never give us any credit. When we win in the playoffs, they’ll find a way to spin it like the other team “lost” moreso than we won. They’re two cents don’t matter. They change opinions like dirty drawers unless you’re the beloved Patriots, Packers, 49ers, Giants, or Steelers.

cowboys are 4-25 in Nov. and that is when Romo starts to choke. NO is falling to peices and Green Gay lost to SF, SEA, and IND. NY lost 2 divisional games. yet some how only the Falcons have issues and can’t beat these teams. we’re not even playing as good as we can. 13 picks or something like that. i would much rather give up some rushing yards compared to BVG 3rd and 21s that were converted last year.

Man we would really get some respect then (insert sarcastic tone). Here’s an idea….let’s be the hometown paper of the only undefeated team in the NFL and bash the hometown team. There’s a novel idea.
***************************************
It was so obvious the Raiders were on fresh legs. We play the Eagles coming off of their BYE as well, it will be a battle but I think we can win it. Hopefully their QB offers up some gifts disguised as turnovers. Later on we get the Cardinals coming off of their BYE.
A few years ago we were getting the NFC South games with all of them coming off their BYE week. I wrote Roger G. and told him the schedule had to be changed. I didn’t hear anything back but I did hear from his assistant when I wrote him about a certain QB and federal charges.

The bad news is that the Falcons have some flaws and will lose a few games this year (I’d say 3-4). The good news is that they’ll win their division almost by default and that other teams have flaws as well. I don’t see a dominant team this year. Stopping the run is a concern and a mystery, given they have some good DTs. Getting Coer Peters back will help. As far as pass defense, well, you see .

Hey, I have been asking why Antone Smith get no carries. Almost literally, NO carries. He has one carry in three years. He looks great in preseason but never plays after that. I like what I see, but there must be something I don’t know about. I hear he is the fastest player on the team. This is about he 4th time I have posted trying to figure out what’s up with Antone, and I never hear anything. Maybe nobody knows. Is he being paid? Does he really exist? Most of you so called fans are just pathetic and you dont seem like fans to me, all teams in the nfl are defeatable, you all forget these players are human just like all of us, they have no back to back home games and are constantly traveling, now looking at these facts along with the constant practice every week and a struggle of a fight/game each sunday, its expected that these guys get a little fatigued considering what they are going through week in and out, the fact that they have been able to come away with wins is just amazing considering the lack of depth at certain positions ie offensive line, corner back, safety, linebacker for christs sake we have to expect fatigue to set in some time, the only importance here on out is that they show up every game ready to put up a fight and win at all costs, thats what theyve been doing even with guys playing 100% of the snaps, they find a way to make big plays and come out with a win, now as a loyal falcon fan i dont expect this team to win every game, i only expect that they show up and fight to the end for that w, they may not get it but they give it their all and that they have done every game, and that is why they have earned each w they have

Akeem Den is not cutting the mustard @ middle linebacker, constantly out of position. Dunta Robinson needs to be quiet, he is one of the worst tacklers i have ever seen. He comes up and throws his body into oppenents. If he ever learns to wrap up at the same time when hitting an opponent he will be something special. Witherspoon and De-who cloud needs to stop dancing and thrash taliking and play football. Time for the new o line coach to be called on the carpet to. and Jaquizz is alraedy idecline. It was no secret the Falcons would be looking for one running back in the draft, but no it looks like they will be looking for a replacement for Rodgers, dops to many screen passes.

I hope Turner uses the off week to lose 20 pounds of fat. Others are sacrificing to improve and get better/stronger. Why won’t Turner Rise Up? Are there any speedy running backs we can try out? Rodgers can’t run fast or break any tackles so ready to end this experiment. Could we use Marcus Lattimore on Sundays to get those 1 or 2 yrd 4th downs and short run TDs?

I agree with several of you, particularly Bopro. End the negativity. This ain’t 1998 and I wish the stupid media would stop calling the Falcons the “Dirty Birds” that was fun 1998 with that team but is so lame now in 2012 and it just feeds fodder to the fans of our oponents. This is 2012 and I don’t see no Dirty Bird Dancing except as a joke. Enjoy the victories, since to make the playoffs you have to win 6 or 7 games that are decided by less than 7 points, after all there is parity in the NFL and on any given Sunday your team can look like a contender and even beat a real contender. In the end the team with the most W’s not L’s will be playing in January. I ‘ve had season tickets for over 20 years and enjoyed the small victories and suffered the crushing defeats, this year feels good and the Falcons Air Force is fun to watch. I am enjoying the defensive play, it’s not perfect but we are improved considerably, thank you Asante Samuel for the interception, thank you John Abraham for the pressure. On offense thank you Harry Douglas for staying focused and giving us a boost during the helmet deflection, thanks Matt Ryan and the whole offense though you struggled you got us to where Matt Bryant could win the game Sunday. Stay healthy, keep winning Falcons and let the whiners whine. Focus on the next game and win that one too, even if it’s by only 1 point, its a 60 minute game and a 16 game season to reach the playoffs. We still have our division (those games are always close) and NFC enemies to overcome; we want home field advantage and those 6 victories count. We don’t want to go to New York, San Fransico, Green Bay for the playoffs we want them or anyone else in our Dome, then the only other place we want to see is New Orleans as the NFC Champions. I know I’m dreaming but it sure would be nice and we can all hope for the best.

Getting Peters back will help shore up run defense. As far as offensive line I am for giving Kontz and Holmes more playing time.Clabo and Baker have got to go.Anything is better than what we have right now.Getting killed at the line of scrimmage and yes Michael Turner is mediocre at best, but in fairness to him no running back can succeed when an offensive line is being pushed back and can’t create holes.Put up or shut up time.Time to start playing the big boys and man up and get some wins and go deep into the playoffs or 6-0 don’t mean squat.Just stating the obvious.

It’s a matter of focus and execution. Smitty needs to keep the team FOCUSED on the goal at hand and EXECUTE (wrap up and tackle, block the defenders and for God sake Turner stop running into an F’n pile in from of you). Get some well deserved rest during the bye and fix the issues during the week of preparation. This team is lacking talent in some key positions (DE, MLB, NT, RB) so our talent from the BVG error is only going to take us so far. I’m looking forward to Nolan drafting his kind of defensive players as he did in SF, Denver and Miami.

Opinion from Canada, and a fan of the Falcons since 1998. Every year since Matt Ryan and Mike Smith entered the picture the results have always been the same. Win the close games. I remember the field goal to beat the bears with 4 seconds left, and to stop Cutler 4th down on the falcons 5 yard line. This team is built around close wins, with all stars like bryant with a 55 yarder, Ryan with a 60 yard completion to White, and yes even turner bumbling in for a touchdown late in the game against Washington. And Spoons hit on RGIII? Yeah it was that good.
Here’s some positivity, once these all star players like Samuel Robinson Turner Jones Ryan Bryant, all get on the same page and step up together in every game, cause the talents there. I don’t see a team better then this squad in the NFL. Pats have a chance with all their talent, but they are all rookies, Atlanta isn’t anymore. Congrats on the first third of the season boys, keep up the good work.

“The Falcons have a lot of work to do.. They are good.. but if we go up against the Giants right now.. we are going to get blown out of the park!”
I certainly concur with this observation and have stated so on another thread about the Falcons win against the Raiders. On the other hand, the guy that thinks we will end up 9-7 is also WAY off base! Our remaining schedule is not all that tough, either. and we have 5 more home games to play as well! We’ve got the Aint’s twice, Tampa Bay twice and all the tough teams we play at home! We will make the playoffs. How far we go depends on stopping the run and our ability to start running the ball ourselves. Our play against the Eagles will be an eye opener as to whether we can adjust and improve or possibly tank and collapse! The Eagles are desperate and playing at home and coming off a bye week, too! However, if we can protect Ryan and he doesn’t keep regressing to being just an average quarterback we should score some points and be there at the end to win. Frankly, other than the Giants, I don’t see ANY team in today’s NFL that doesn’t have some serious flaws either on offense or defense! They can all be beaten. At 6-0 if we go 5-5 the rest of the way, that should be more than enough to win this division and get us a first round home game. What say you???

Run the ball, run the ball…. That’s all I read now when it comes to the Falcons. Last year it was pass the ball, pass the ball… let Ryan go deep. Make up your minds up people. What good does it do if Turner runs for 2 yards up the middle every down and then we punt. I love the way we have played. Seems the Falcons are letting the game dictate how they run their offense not redundant play calling that ends up with a 4th down punt. Keep the wins coming Dirty Birds, and to all you whinny fans complaining about how your team got to 6-0…don’t ruin it for the rest of us who are relishing in the moment.

Ideally you run to set up play action but you can’t consistently run 1st and 2nd down and gain only 2 yards and put Matt in a position where he has long yardage and the rush is coming. O-Line has got to become nastier and open up some wholes. Doesn’t help, that our RB is slow to get to the line and isn’t good at creating something if nothing is there.

Did not know you had to apologize for being 6-0…..1-4 you got some apologies to be doing but 6-0…..looks good to me. Aint fans would you rather be 6-0 right now? Shhhhhh dont answer that….Answer This…..who is 6-0 in your division? Just a question. “The Past”
BY RALPH WALDO EMERSON
The debt is paid,
The verdict said,
The Furies laid,
The plague is stayed,
All fortunes made;
Turn the key and bolt the door,
Sweet is death forevermore.
Nor haughty hope, nor swart chagrin,
Nor murdering hate, can enter in.
All is now secure and fast;
Not the gods can shake the Past;
Flies-to the adamantine door
Bolted down forevermore.
None can re-enter there,—
No thief so politic,
No Satan with a royal trick
Steal in by window, chink, or hole,
To bind or unbind, add what lacked,
Insert a leaf, or forge a name,
New-face or finish what is packed,
Alter or mend eternal Fact.
This would be excellent for all Caints fans to print and post on their fridge to remind them that every day we move forward is another day to put this ugly season behind you. You will persevere …..just not this year.

The games have to be played to see wo wins. But I also think the Falcons have regressed the past two weeks. A running back can’t run if there is and offensive lineman in the place where there should
be a hole. This happens a lot with the birds. Same thing for theD-line. If they get blown out the lb’s or
db’s have to make the tackle way down the field. They cant fill a gap if the o-line has blown out the d-
line and is then blocking them. The Falcons need to get it together. No excuses. Block and tackle
and you will be suprised at the results.

The Falcons, Braves, Hawks, Dream, Jackets, Dawgs all have the same deal…good in the regular season, fizzle out in the playoffs or bowl games….its a GA thing….don’t like it, but it is what it is!
That being said, SOMEONE has to reverse the curse….I’m looking for the Falcons to start it off. To me the Falcons have 4 Benchmark games this season (Broncos, Eagles, Saints (H), Giants). Those games will tell you a lot about where this team is heading to the playoffs. They’ve won one, let’s get it done!

We’ve got ten games left with only 2 of them tough ones on the road: Philly and Detroit…..and BOTH of those teams are SERIOUSLY flawed! Frankly, our toughest game left will be the Giants at home, who whipped our butts good last year…..and play much better on the road for some reason than at home! As flawed as we are I still don’t see any scenario where we don’t go 5-5 in these last 10 games. That gives us a 11-5 record, the division title and one home game to start the playoffs. Now, if we can put things together, straighten out some of our flaws, we could end up with the best record, a bye week, and home field advantage throughout! Lots of good that did us two years ago! We had a bye week and two weeks to prepare….and Green Bay slapped 50 points on us! What has changed since them? Not much. Maybe more athleticism in the secondary (not more brains!) and better wide receivers. But we presently can’t stop the run, and we can’t rush the ball. I wouldn’t mortgage my house and bet on this Falcon team to even win one playoff game! Of course, I hope they do and I’m wrong!

I agree with the article’s premise. The Falcons are “Very Fortunate” to 6-0 right now and that’s because the seasoned NFL fan and sports columnists all see what has happened to the Falcons. They don’t have to worry about having to have been buried before they could even consider posturing for a playoff seed. Meaning, if they were at .500 or less, given the way they are playing-they wouldn’t make the playoffs. I’ve seen these types of wins before when the Falcons went 13-3 and got plastered by the emerging Green Bay Packers-who went on to win the Super bowl. Some fans think that bloggers are being negative-about the Falcons. No, I don’t think it is negative and that’s why the title of this blog post indicates this. Just look at the Falcons upcoming opponents at the quarter mark in this regular season: They’ve got Philly, which is going to set the tone for the remaining games.
• Dallas
• New Orleans
• Arizona
• Tampa Bay
• New Orleans
• Carolina
• New York
• Detroit
• Tampa Bay
In the next 6 games the Falcon play the Saints twice. I understand Smitty giving his team a full week off, and it looks like they are in a good space as having the luxury of time to get this team to become more consistent and dominate in areas and corrects mistakes and not a lot of teams have that luxury of time to do these things at 6-0. I would say lemme me see where you’re at in the next 4 to 5 games. That will determine who will get to be at the ball (dance). Once you’ve made it to the ball (dance)-Now you have to rely on what got you there in the first place. The Falcons can keep winning by chance and circumstance, but that kind of play will only get you a ticket to the dance. Once in the playoffs, however-if the “Dirty Birds” keep playing like they’re playing, they’ll get their (dance) ticket punched-no pun intended.

It all comes down to 2 seconds. 2 little seconds. That ’s the difference between playoff victories and losses. That’s the extra time our O-Line has to give Ryan if the Falcon’s are going to advance in the playoffs. Of Ryan’s 3 picks on Sunday only one was his fault…the first one. He was in the process of getting hit on the other two because he didn’t get the extra 2 seconds. Even Ryan, famous for taking the blame even if everybody knows it was NOT his fault, let it slip out at his presser that the “first interception was on me” before he caught himself and said “well, they were all on me” and took the blame away from the porous O-Line. That’s another reason to really appreciate Ryan, he does not point fingers at anybody else and protects his teammates. Problem is They need to do a better job of protecting him. Just find a way to give him 2 more seconds in the pocket without getting crushed and the Falcons are in the Superbowl.

The true record of the Falcon’s opponents is 11 and 21. That’s only a .333 % winning average. We haven’t played anyone who be placed in the top tier of teams. We can’t get any respect until we play and beat a top tier team. We don’t play anyone with a winning record until 11/18 when we play Arizona. It’s not the Falcon’s fault that the schedule is skewed this way but the facts are the facts. We haven’t played or beaten anyone with a pedigree or a winning record yet, and we haven’t beaten teams we should have as decisively as a 6-0 team should.

I don’t argue your assessment but I will argue your math. The total combined wins of the teams the Falcons have played is 12. The total combined losses of these teams is 22. Take out the losses to the Falcons and their combined record is 12-17. It doesn’t make sense to count the Falcons own victories over these teams in figuring a w-l percentage. .414%, not .333% which is wrong anyway. Using your figures that number would be .344%.

Attitude is everything. The Falcons personnel players and coaches aren’t jumping up and down celebrating their 6-0 start, and say “we’re a tough team to beat”. No; they are saying it’s a good start and that’s all there is too it, period. Yes, they’re thankful for their record; who would’nt be? Wanting your home team to improve in areas you can clearly see-which I must say: Atlanta fans are very football sophisticated knowledgeable and have very accurate opinions as to where this Falcons team needs to improve. The Falcons fans that amazes me are the ones who think that we are headed straight line to the Superbowl, without doing their homework (research) and will strike down anyone who thinks there is room for improvement.

Well, it’s obvious, even to the most casual observer, that LKW4 is either a racist, blind, dumb, stupid or all 4! Ryan is a top notch NFL quarterback, not so much because of his arm, which is plenty strong and good, but because he knows how to manage a football game, and generally doesn’t throw the ball up for grabs or force passes into double coverage! But without a running game he’s going to be limited in what he can do with the passing talent the team possesses. I suspect the Falcons are going to work on that with their bye week….and come out running the ball against the Eagles. They need to utilize the screen pass better, too! The Eagles are flawed, but so are we. It will be interesting to see who exploits the other teams flaws the most!

Falcons have won but not because of Ryan. Get rid of Ryan and our game will improve. Ryan still looks like he should be playing in the high school league. We have so many good players and the one player that gets the credit for winning is the worst player on the team. He should not be getting the credit for the wins, he should not be the person interviewed at the end of each game. He should not be a team captain.
Wow…even it being 2012, there still is a dumba** born every day.

Here’s what is good about being 6-0 at this point. The Falcons only have to play .500 football the rest of the season and still most likely get home field advantage through out the playoffs. I’ll take 11-5 any year. However, and I know on any giving Sunday, according to the schedule, who believes the Falcons will finish the year at.500. I see 2-3 defeats from here on out. One to the aints, one to Tampa Bay, and maybe the Giants.

9. What defense sits in the top three in the NFL in turnovers? (psst they are #2).
…..yeah, but what defense is giving up over 150 yards a game on the ground….and leaves zone gaps in the secondary the size of the state of Georgia? US! Turnovers are nice, and we are getting our share for a change, but those turnovers can disappear in a heartbeat! If we don’t make some improvement in stopping the run….and having more than 2 out of the 5 guys in the secondary know where they are suppose to be and who to cover when the defensive huddle breaks….we could lose more games than we win down the stretch!
10. What team has a second year receiver from Alabama that no one can cover? They cant cover Roddy White either but hey!
……yeah, and who have two top notch receivers that have a propensity for dropping easy passes that my 85 year old mother who’s been dead for 3 years could have caught? No question our two receivers are good, fast and smart. But they are imperfect and will drop the very catchable pass sometimes, agreed? We need to RUN the ball more successfully than we have the past 6 games if we want our passing game to stay top notch and dominating!

Barring injuries I don’t see us losing to the Caints. Sure, they can put some points on the board but they can’t stop anybody, ground or air assault. Tampa………..? I dunno, the NFC South Rivalry games are always tough, I don’t like to look ahead but I haven’t looked at Tampa’s stats yet this year and I see their main claim to fame is stopping the run…..3rd in Run Defense. At home they aren’t selling out. Josh Freeman has an 84.2 passer rating. Their sack leader is Michael Bennett with 4. Their FG kicker, Connor Barth, is very accurate even from long range 3-4 from 50 plus. And in the who cares dept punter Michael Koenen is averaging 5 yards more in an outdoor stadium. You’ll remember him from his Falcon days, the Falcons franchise tag player in 09′. The Caints have immortalized Koenen in granite at the Mercedez-Benz Dome, don’t have a clue why they would worship a punter, what a waste of good granite. You might recall Steve Gleason, the other subject of the statue collaborated with filmmaker Sean Pamphilon to document his life with ALS. This included a clip of a Saints locker room talk by Gregg Williams which exhorted his players to injure opposing players. That tape became public shortly after Williams had been suspended for his role in Bountygate. Gleason criticized Pamphilon after the tape became public, saying that the filmmaker did not have rights to release the tape. Obviously Pamphilon did the right thing.

Hmmmm lets see….many teams…..sorry EVERY team in the NFL has problems…the deal is can you overcome your problems and still win? For three weeks we have. Dont care if we look like wounded Falcons doing so….we still were birds of prey and we won despite the errors or miscuses…the sign of a good team! Yes we 3-0 in the playoffs…i notice how many harp on that…the real deal is and remains the same…we 6-0 right now and the job is to get to the playoffs and change your winning precentage. Who cares about dropped passes (still 6-0 and still cant cover my receivers!) Who cares about that 154 yards on the ground…has not helped 6 teams to beat us! We care about winning! We have moved forward and we dont look in the past because if we do we will never be successful…..many of you could use that life lesson cause if you focus on the past in your personal life you do these Falcons you are doomed to fail!

As Tony the Tiger used to say, ITS GREAT!!!!!!!!! that the Falcons have soared to the top of the power rankings in the NFL all the way the No. 1 ranked team in the NFL. That has to be a first, although their have been two other Falcon teams that were qualified to be ranked as high–1980 and 1998. My question, however, is where will the falcons be ranked after this season is completely over and when the superbowl champion is crowned. I hope the superbowl winner will be the Falcons, because if it is not, then the current ranking means absolutely NOTHING. I hope that mike smith and the Falcons will stay grounded and not pay much attention to the bulletin board material of the Falcons incredible ranking and just have LASER FOCUS ON THE SEASON to finish strong, make the playoffs as the overall #1 seed in the league, AND STEAMROLL THEIR WAY TO THEIR FIRST TITLE. Look the Braves did it in 1995 so I believe it is the Falcons turn this year. The Falcons could have won the superbowl in 1998, but with the Eugene Robinson fiasco prior to the game causing a major distraction for the players, coupled with their lack of confidence of being the best team–although the Falcons had just beaten the team with the best record in the league in the Vikings in the playoffs, the Falcons didnt believe they were better than the Broncos and let the Broncos beat them in the superbowl. This year the Falcons may not have the best talent in the league–but they sure have enough to win the superbowl in my opinion. No other team has three deep threats as good as Gonzales, White and Julio and with Turner running hard, and a much improved defensive scheme, coupled with a better offensive scheme (what both new offensive and defensive coordinators have provided thus far) the Falcons are talented enough to get the job done. I hope they dont blow it because the city of Atlanta is starving for a champion. In the last 100 years, only the Braves have turned the trick, and the other major franchises have failed miserably, even the teams that were here and have left (Thrashers and Flames). I hope that the Falcons can win their superbowl legitimately and not have to do what the New Orleans Saints did by using a bounty program to become champions. I agree with Roger Goddell and I hope the Saints are stripped of their superbowl championship. Go Falcons—finish the drill and become champions of the world!

Since NFC South inception winning division records:
2002-03 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 12–4 Won Super Bowl XXXVII (Raiders) 48–21
2003-04 Carolina Panthers 11–5 Lost Super Bowl XXXVIII (Patriots) 32–29
2004-05 Atlanta Falcons 11–5 Lost NFC Championship (Eagles) 27-10
2005-06 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 11–5 Lost Wild Card Playoff (Redskins) 17-10
2006-07 Caints 10–6 Lost NFC Championship (Bears) 39–14
2007-08 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 9–7 Lost Wild Card Playoff (Giants) 24–14
2008-09 Carolina Panthers 12–4 Lost Divisional Playoff (Cardinals) 33–13
2009-10 Caints 13–3 Won Super Bowl XLIV (Colts) 31–17 *Cheated*
2010-11 Atlanta Falcons 13–3 Lost Divisional Playoff (Packers) 48-21
2011-12 Caints 13–3 Lost Divisional Playoff (49ers) 36-32
The NFC South is the only division since the 2002 realignment to have each of its teams make a conference championship game appearance: Tampa Bay (2002), Atlanta (2004), Carolina (2003 and 2005), and Caints (2006 and 2009). All four teams have also made a Super Bowl appearance: Atlanta, when they were in the NFC West Division, (XXXIII), Tampa Bay (XXXVII), Carolina (XXXVIII), and Caints (XLIV). All four members of the NFC South have made postseason appearances before entering the division in 2002. Also since 2002, each team has won at least two division titles, the only such division in the league.

The Aints are not #1. The bounty boys defense is 29th in pts allowed at 30.3 per game, 30th in passing yards at 305.2, 31st in rushing yards at 160.3, and dead last in total yards allowed at 465.5. The Aints gave up 513 yards to the mighty Bucs!
The only two teams that have given up more points than the Aints are KC and Washington. Both of those teams defeated the Who Dats in NO!
Looking at the schedule, the Aints will lose 10 or more games. A 2-4 record and the toughest part of the schedule is coming up. A top 10 draft pick is within the grasp of the team with the intimidating lily flower on their helmets.

The Falcons should try and make a trade with Pitt for Jonathan Dwyer out of GT. Tonight he ran 17 times for 122 yards, and reminds me alot of Jerome Bettis. I’ve followed the Falcons since they first drafter Tommy Nobis. Now that was a hard nosed nut cracker. The Falcons today do not play the same football as then. Then you saw nobody parade around the field after making a tackle. Maybe a hand shake be a teammate but that was it. The biggest thing then was the team. Now it’s all about the individual. What team?
But the thing now is football has changed so that they now have a 6—-0 record. How I don’t know, but so far each game has ended with the Falcons ahead. So that means they’re winning. The problem I see with the team now is they don’t play as a team. Now some try to but the others are so bound by ” look at me and see what I can do”. Till that attitude is overcome you will see the birds squeak by but probably still win. The great teams play team football. Just wait till the birds learn that and you’ll see just how good they can be.

30 Minute Shepherd’s Pie – Recipe courtesy Rachael Ray
Ingredients
2 pounds potatoes, such as russet, peeled and cubed
2 tablespoons sour cream or softened cream cheese
1 large egg yolk
1/2 cup cream, for a lighter version substitute vegetable or chicken broth
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, 1 turn of the pan
1 3/4 pounds ground beef or ground lamb
1 carrot, peeled and chopped
1 onion, chopped
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup beef stock or broth
2 teaspoons Worcestershire, eyeball it
1/2 cup frozen peas, a couple of handfuls
1 teaspoon sweet paprika
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves
Directions
Boil potatoes in salted water until tender, about 12 minutes. Drain potatoes and pour them into a bowl. Combine sour cream, egg yolk and cream. Add the cream mixture into potatoes and mash until potatoes are almost smooth.
While potatoes boil, preheat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add oil to hot pan with beef or lamb. Season meat with salt and pepper. Brown and crumble meat for 3 or 4 minutes. If you are using lamb and the pan is fatty, spoon away some of the drippings. Add chopped carrot and onion to the meat. Cook veggies with meat 5 minutes, stirring frequently. In a second small skillet over medium heat cook butter and flour together 2 minutes. Whisk in broth and Worcestershire sauce. Thicken gravy 1 minute. Add gravy to meat and vegetables. Stir in peas.
Preheat broiler to high. Fill a small rectangular casserole with meat and vegetable mixture. Spoon potatoes over meat evenly. Top potatoes with paprika and broil 6 to 8 inches from the heat until potatoes are evenly browned. Top casserole dish with chopped parsley and serve.
Eat.
