Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and head coach Mike Smith look on in apparent dismay. (Curtis Compton/Ccompton@ajc.com)
The Falcons have a nickname for kicker Matt Bryant.
“He’s ‘Mister Automatic,’” safety William Moore said. “I didn’t have one doubt in my mind. He’s been coming through for us all season.”
With the Falcons’ high-octane offense running on fumes, and Mister Automatic having already misfired on a 43-yard first quarter attempt, Bryant hit from 55 yards with one second left to lift the Falcons to a 23-20 victory over the Oakland Raiders on Sunday at the Georgia Dome.
It was the Falcons’ third straight dramatic win in the fourth quarter and the 19th time that quarterback Matt Ryan has pulled out a win in the fourth quarter or overtime.
The Falcons needed a late touchdown run from running back Michael Turner with under three minutes to play to beat Washington 24-17 on Oct. 7.
Bryant made a 40-yarder to beat Carolina 30-28 with five seconds left on Sept. 30.
All of this late-game drama is taking its toll on the team.
“We have to cut it out with these nail bitters,” Moore said. “Overall, we’re going to have to finish ball games. I felt like we played down (to the Raiders’ level) a little bit.”
With the victory, the Falcons improved to 6-0 heading into their bye week. The Raiders dropped to 1-4.
Also, Falcons head coach Mike Smith joined Dan Reeves in team annals for most victories with 49. He could set the new mark with the Falcons face the Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 28.
“Everybody is happy for Coach Smith,” Ryan said. “He’s done a great job since he’s been here and certainly everything that comes his way is deserved. We all love playing for him.”
With the passing game struggling and the power running game in moth balls somewhere, Ryan pulled things together in the final 40 seconds from the Falcon’s 20.
He started by completing a screen pass to Jacquizz Rodgers for 7 yards. He followed with a 4-yard completion to Harry Douglas, who scooted out of bounds.
After an incompletion, Ryan found tight end Tony Gonzalez for gains of 10 and 13 yards down to Oakland’s 37. With five seconds on the clock Bryant was summoned.
“It’s about handling the moment, whatever that is, managing it,” Bryant said.
The Raiders tried to ice Bryant with a timeout. He used that to get in a practice kick.
“In my opinion there are more good things that can come out of calling a timeout,” Bryant said. “I mean if you make the kick, you just conjure up that feeling of repeating that. If you miss it, then you know how to make the adjustments.”
Ryan had his worst game of the season. He completed 24 of 37 passes for 249 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. His passer rating of 59.4 was his lowest since he posted a 50.6 in a 17-10 loss at Houston on Dec. 4, 2011.
With the offense sputtering, the defense tried to drag the team to victory.
With the score tied 13-13 and the Raiders within field goal range, cornerback Asante Samuel stepped in front of a Carson Palmer pass intended for wide receiver Denarius Moore and returned it 79 yards for a touchdown with 2:40 to play.
“Making that mistake I made is crucial, it’s on me,” Palmer said. “It’s on me. It’s my fault.”
The Raiders didn’t fade. They promptly scored on a touchdown run by Darren McFadden to make it 20-20 with 40 seconds to left setting the stage for the latest dramatic drive.
Ryan, who had thrown three interceptions over the first five games, tossed three in the first half against the Raiders. The Raiders turned those three picks into 10 points en route to a 13-7 halftime lead.
On the fourth play of the game during the Falcons’ opening drive, Ryan tried to connect with Douglas on a crossing route, but Oakland cornerback Joselio Hanson cut underneath to pick off the pass.
The Falcons forced the Raiders to punt, but Ryan tossed his second interception on a deep pass intended for Julio Jones. Mike Huff intercepted the ball at Oakland’s 2-yard line.
The Raiders quickly got from the shadows of their goal posts when Palmer connected with Moore on a 49-yard pass play. The drive stalled and Sebastian Janikowski made a 52-yard field goal.
On the Falcons ensuing possession, Ryan got hot. He completed 7 of 7 passes on a 10-play, 80-yard touchdown drive. He capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Roddy White to make it 7-3.
Former Georgia Tech standout Philip Wheeler forced Ryan’s third interception. Wheeler blitzed untouched up the middle. When he slammed into the Ryan, the pass fluttered out and Oakland safety Tyvon Branch came down with it at Atlanta’s 28. The Raiders would score on a 25 yard pass two plays later.

Disagree MrSaint. It’s the great teams that pull it out when it counts. We just need to stop letting everyone else look like champions. I mean 474 yds of offense? And stop making those dumb play calls with inches to go. I don’t care that it’s a garbage win. We are 6-0 baby!!!

A win is a win, but I’m not comfortable with our assertion about being an elite team. We let a door mat team push us to a last second field goal.
Where is the pressure “guess where we’re coming from” defense that we saw for the first two games. It seems like we’ve dusted off the Van Gorder play book and gone back to the Swiss cheese, soft zone.
O line did not protect very well today.
I hope we come out of the bye week rested and re-focused.

It’s not hard to find plenty of things to worry about. The Falcons are barely getting by bad teams. Okay, you get behind the Panthers, things look dim, and then make a great comeback to win. That’s okay and a character builder. But then, they struggle mightily against Washington and now Oakland. When they play a good time, they won’t have the opportunity to make the comeback.
This looks like a better team, and I am excited that we are on track to win the division and get home field advantage. But this team, in its present state, I don’t see making it to the second game of the playoffs.

I’d like to say that ‘Lowly Raiders’ may be a little disrespectful of a team that came as close to beating us this year as any of the six we’ve faced. True, we played a sloppy game and if they had won, we could tack it on as a self inflected wound. But… still and all, the Raiders came into the Dome to play and but for a few plays that saved our butts, they might have walked out with a HUGE upset.
Hat tip to the Silver & Black for coming in with pride and playing a real game.

Ask the Cowboys what a good kicker means to your game. Way to go Matt B!
Am the only one that saw some bad spots by the real officials in this game. On the fumble by return by Edwards, he looked down inside the 1 but they spotted it at 2. And then I thought Turner was clearly in on 2nd down.
And there was the play later where the defense hemmed up the Raider RB and he ran out of bounds 5 yards behind the line. Announcers even said “huge loss”, and the refs gave him forward progress at the original line of scrimmage.

This really don’t have any running plays. I think they focused a littl too much on pass plays and pass blocking during the offseason the lineman has forgotten how to run block. M Turner is actually running harder this year. Thy obviously dont have many run plays. They run the same plays for J Rodgers as they do Turner. This team is a Roddy White injury to being a horrible team. Honestly without Roddy or Tony G, this team will not win many games. Its all good right now while beating the 2nd weakest division in all of football but when we run into a team like San Francisco, everybody better be healthy. There is no running of the 49er so being a one dimesional offense will make it easier for them. This is just real talk. I love my falcons but I can’t praise them all the time when there is clearly something wrong. is

Wow can’t believe we are 6-0. But good teams win the ugly games. Just wish we could find someone to take DeCoud’s place at safety. His 2 missed tackles at the end almost cost us the game. The 1st missed tackle was on the long running play. If he doesn’t miss the tackle its only an 8yd. gain and then what a terrible whiff at trying to tackle the receiver after Asante went for the pick on the tying drive for Oak. He was bad last year and even worse this year. If we are to be serious superbowl contenders we must fill some holes on defense and let Snelling carry the rock instead of Turner. Our running game stinks, and needs some revamping. Don’t get me wrong I love the Falcons and love the way they fight to the last whistle. They have a very good team but need some tweeking if they are to make a run in the playoffs.

Would it be too much to ask to get a running back that can gain a yard or two when you’ve got to have it? It seems obvious that The Falcons have no confidence in Turner’s ability to get a yard when it has to happen. For years now, I’ve been sick of watching Turner run into a pile for no gain, when there was a gaping hole in the line nearby.
The man seems to have no ability to think on his feet during a run, and for reason the Falcons can’t seem to stretch the line, and the defense, out on running plays, as is so frequently done to us, by just about every team we play. I may not know everything there is to know about football, but I know what I see, and I just don’t understand it.
Turner is constantly give accolades as a running back, and yet he seems so slow and one-dimensional compared to the running backs of just about every other team we play. Yes he’s difficult to tackle if he gets into open ground, but that doesn’t happend very often. What we really need is some speed in our ground game, and this team would really take off.

Mr. Saint acts as though his team is something of relevance. Last time I checked the Aints let the lowly Chiefs come from way behind to beat them in their own house. The only win the Aints have was from the refs helping them last Sunday. The Aints may be the best 1-4 team, but they are still 1-4 and in the cellar of the division. Suck on it swamp rat.

Turner and Snelling share one trait that hurts the Falcon running game. Both stop when they get to the defensive players. Sure Turner gets off a good yardage run, but that is very seldom and a tiny percent of his runs
I have to admit that Oakland came to play and the Falcons were a little overconfident during the early part of the game.

Being a realist here from what I saw on the game.
Of the 3 ints 1 was on Matt Ryan which was the very first one that was suppose to be to Harry Douglas, but those other two I’m saying that was on the offensive line.
The O-line didn’t do us any favors this week at all in fact most of the time M.Turner was trying to rush I could swear it wasn’t the Raiders he’d run into it was the O-line.
As for the defense that first half was pure garbage, but after half time I could tell Mike Nolan laid into them as for the offense not so much. I’ll be real not happy with Matt Ryan’s today, but games like this happened. It happened to Peyton so it can happen to anyone.
Plus I say this now and I mean it as long as we’re undefeated just like the Texans EVERYONE WILL COME IN LOOKING TO UPSET US EVEN PHILLY. So in some ways these games will be frequent, but you got to have the mental toughness to pull these type of games out, and the falcons did.
Now it’s the bye week it’s time for Falcons to refocus and also the O-line to do a little soul searching. The way MR2 got hit on that third INT has anyone shaking in their boots.
Still though WE 6-0 CAN’T BE MAD!!!!! OH YEAH!

Manning, Griffin, Rivers, Newton. I don’t care what the record of those teams are. Those are some great quarterbacks that the Falcons have been up against, and they beat them all. And if Oakland had played against everyone else that they faced this season, the way that they competed against Atlanta, I can promise you that they wouldn’t be 1-4 right now. (If you have any doubts about what the teams that Atlanta has beaten are capable of, look over at what Washington did to Minnesota today…) And yea, the road gets tougher after the bye week, but there’s no reason to think that this team i going to tank. They’ve got as much talent as anyone, and more than most. I’m excited about the rest of the year.

Birds have another head-scratching win. 6-0, I’ll happily take it. As Parcells said, you’re as good as your record says you are.
That being said, the schedule is tougher after the bye. Games at Eagles and against Giants and Cowboys aren’t going to be easy. Still, I’m not sure that any team in the NFL is better than the Falcons. Giants, 49ers, Packers, Pats, Ravens have all have bad losses. Falcons have zero losses. Go back to playing/coaching like we did in the first three games and we’ll be just fine.

This is at least the second time this year that we have had first and goal inside the two yard line and have called a pass play that went incomplete and then failed to score because we ended up forth and goal from the one. Either The OC is convinced our running game is ineffective or he is making calls that violate all fundamental laws of football. Something is bad wrong when you are calling pas plays on first and goal from inside the two. I have watched opposing running backs hit the pile and push it forward for two or three more yards. Michael Turner hits the pile and goes down or gets pushed back. Either our offensive line stinks or Turner is not the back we need. Either way, I don’t see what can be done about it at this point, but improving the running game should be a big priority in the off season.

Guys and gals, this isn’t college football, where they factor in style points and how badly you beat your opponents. This is the NFL, where all that matters, repeat, ALL THAT MATTERS, is WINS!!! Whether you win by 1 or 41, as long as your team has more points than the other team when the final gun sounds, that’s all that matters. Granted, the Falcons haven’t played their best football the past 3 weeks, but they’ve FOUND WAYS TO WIN!! Call it luck, call it karma, call it whatever you want, but you have to call it what it is too: The Falcons are UNDEFEATED!!! And i don’t know about you guys, but i’ll take an ugly WIN over a pretty LOSS any day of the week!!
Championship teams find ways to win even when they’re not at their best, and the Falcons have done that!! So don’t hate, congratulate!! 6-0!!

Good teams find a way to win, even when they ‘play down’ to the lesser teams. Kudos to the Falcons to be resilient enough to find a way. Adjustments need to be made. We can’t stop the running game. And, the current Falcons tandem isn’t getting it done consistently, either. Though, we did run into a defense that conceded their poor pass defense, which ended up having a banner game with three intercepts. Game planning?

Where is the much “ballyhood” screen pass that was talked about all pre season?????? The heckly&jeckyl coons have NO run game,No tackling game,No coverage game..How in hell are they 6-0????
In the past 3 games we have been out played and out coached..I blame the coaching staff for lackluster game planing..how in the hell Nolan and Kotter are rand as “top notch” in their field is beyond me! Ryan throws 3 picks in the 1st half..how disgusting is that?
The birds will be LUCKY to win another 6 games the rest of the year if they continue to play the way they have for the past 3 games…Smith keeps saying “we have lots of things to correct & work on” When will the “process” start??

If anybody wants some actual post-game analysis, click the link below. The Raiders actually matched up fairly well with the Falcons today. It was all about ball control and bending but not breaking on defense. Oakland has the offensive ground attack and the secondary to do both well against the Falcons. If the link doesn’t post, just search “spinitreacts falcons”

After viewing last nights game, there are a few things that I saw that I want to know if you guys saw it too….
1. Matt Ryan seemed to get, “Happy Feet” when they were blitzing early in the first half of play. I agree that the first one was on him, but with that offensive line taking the day off, I guess he felt he didnt have much choice. (But what about the running game? Guys lets dont blame Turner, there really werent any holes…rewind and have a look)
2. Ok the word is out on Dent. He is a bust. I counted atleast 7 plays where he was out of position, in position, lost in coverage, you name it…he just doesnt fit this defense, sorry. Special teams maybe….(Note the last drive that catch made by number 17 for a first down)
3. Kudos to Samuel for the pick 6, but if you rewind and look at the coaching staff, he made that decision on his own. The coaching staff cringed when he jumped the route,(Might I add, the ensuing drive by the Raiders he tried the same thing and got burned). We were in the same ole “Prevent” defense and he went out and made a play…tried a second time and was out of position and gave up a HUGE play that almost went in for 6. Need to tighten that up a bit DC, good vet move, but poor judgement on the second almost cost us.
4. I understand that the OL is set for pass 70% of the time, but I really think its time to focus on getting the running game going early. We are starting games in the begining like we are playing from behind. The OL is average at best and we need to do better getting them in run set because if we dont, you can forget the playoffs, cause there will be no medicore teams to play.
5. Maybe its just me, but am i starting to see flashes of,”Smitty ball” again? I mean I know they wanted to reward the coach for his “W” percentage, but lets stick with whats been working. The last two games have shown evidence that the, “Ole Smitty ball” is on its way back. Dont need that…need a killer instinct. Period.
6. And last but not least, whats up with the kickoff/punt returns? Mind you I understand that was probably the most powerful leg in football we faced last night but this has been going on for some time this year. Inside the 10 starting drives is not a winning formula, and it is making the chance of passing instead of running the football.
Overall I see a good football team, just a little concerned about a few individuals on this team that may cost us come postseason. Offense is rocking for the most part! Turning into a machine at times, and to think, this team is 6-0 and hasnt played nearly a perfect game yet…imagine that?! Defense is doing what it should for the most part, making adjustments and playing superb 2nd half football…but we are seeing teams run more in the second half and sooner or later the D will start to tire…..All in all love this teams never quit attitude and wish them the best, but i am not going to go all out with the playoff thing till I hear the final whistle…

Horrible performance by Matt Ryan, if he doesn’ play better we won’t win another playoff game. Brady, Alex Smith and Christian Ponder all had multiple interceptions. Must be something in the air. Falcons shaky defense always seems to come up with the big play. Kudos to Ashanti on that interception and Matt Bryant for that 55 yard field goal. The good news is, I think this team can get better. Hopefully after the bye week.

At the end of the day, the team is 6-0 and fans still are finding something to complain about. Early in the season its important to grind out wins and stay healthy. At the end of the season is when you want to play your best ball. Ask the 15-1 Packers last year if playing great in the first half of the season matters.
I’m enthused to be 6-0, but cautiously optimistic about how the season will pan out. The offensive line still concerns me. The usually dependable Clabo is getting beat like a drum. Where is the run game? Is it the backs or the line? Combination of both? Why are we starting out so slow on offense now?

“The Past”
BY RALPH WALDO EMERSON
The debt is paid,
The verdict said,
The Furies laid,
The plague is stayed,
All fortunes made;
Turn the key and bolt the door,
Sweet is death forevermore.
Nor haughty hope, nor swart chagrin,
Nor murdering hate, can enter in.
All is now secure and fast;
Not the gods can shake the Past;
Flies-to the adamantine door
Bolted down forevermore.
None can re-enter there,—
No thief so politic,
No Satan with a royal trick
Steal in by window, chink, or hole,

New-face or finish what is packed,
Alter or mend eternal Fact.

This Raiders team is far from “lowly”. They have a better D line than we do, a better O line, far better running backs and superior linebackers. They also intercepted Matt 3 times. So save the “lowly” adjective for later in the season for teams who are in the race for the 2013 #1 overall draft pick.

I am sick and tired of the “smitty ball” tactics where you play not to loose!! I think what some of us fail to realize is that SOME of these players dont have a couple of seasons left and the least we can do is send them off with a PLAYOFF win. Gonzales week end and week out gives us his all. Abe and a few other veterans also, but some people on this team need to heed the calling and RISE UP!!! EDWARDS/DENT/PERRY/TURNER/RODGERS/ENTIRE OL!!!!

**************************************************
I don’t disagree but the “doormat of a team” (and Dled calling them lowly) comment totally discounts a well rested team came in and played tough defense. You could see they were fresh. The Raiders are close to hitting on all cylinders.
The Raiders went from 25th to 19th in Yards. and from 32nd to 29th in Rushing. In Passing they remained at 12th.
On defense they went in Yards from 30th to 24th, Passing yards from 28th to 25th, and Rushing Yards from 24th to 18th. They killed us in Time of Possession 36:26 to 23:34 which is where we normally excel.
The Raiders should have won the game no doubt. Penalties killed them. Also, on their last score they left way too much time on the clock….. 40 seconds. That’s all these Falcons need.
It was nice to see Gregg Knapp NOT on the Falcons sideline. Other than San Francisco he’s lasted about 1-2 years every team he has worked for. However, this is his second tenure with the Raiders. Raiders head coach Dennis Allen (Atlanta native) started in the NFL with Atlanta under Dan Reeves. I hope he does well.
Dan Reeves, Atlanta Falcons (2002-2003)
Wade Phillips, Atlanta Falcons (2003) (interim head coach)
Jim L. Mora, Atlanta Falcons (2004-2005)
Sean Payton, Caints (2006-2010)
John Fox, Denver Broncos (2011)
Time to put our feet up a bit then get ready for Philadephia. We have got to amp up our run defense and no doubt our O line is dragging butt. Unfortunately the Eagles are also playing us on their Bye week. On paper the Eagles should win, but they won’t. Atlanta 20-17.

At what point in any season has the first six games of the season been a predictor of post season performance?
Two quick and easy points that even the Saints fans that love to hang out on Falcons blocks can understand.
1. At 6-0, we can finish .500 for the rest of the season and likely still win the division.
2. The Falcons lead the league in take-aways. That’s always a recipe for winning in the playoffs.

The falcons said they were going to use more screens and short passes. This looks like the same offence as last year. Ryan was struggling because he didn’t have time to throw down field, Rogers is a great open field runner and should be used in these situations. If they don’t devolpe this type of pass the teams with a good pass rush will stop them in the playoffs.

I still believe Snelling should get his chance. We are starting to look like we’re getting back to playing Smitty ball again as someone said. Few screens except for the quick pass to WR’s. Not sure if Matt is good enough at it. Pick6 last week on one. He must be giving it away. Good one to Turner for 60 yd TD tho. 6 – 0 is great and better to be looking at how to fix problems from there than at being 0 – 6.

Looking at the schedule the Falcons needed to be at least 4-2 after the first six games because the difficulty wasn’t there. Being 6-0 feels a lot better, I hope they get it together the schedule is a lot harder from here on out. The good news is they probably only need to win 1/2 of their remaining games to make the playoffs. Defense has had good and bad moments, Offense needs work, all those weapons and you can’t put a sustainable drive together. Contact me, I would love a better job and some basic football ideas would considerably help this offense.

Yes, it does seem that the Falcons–all ATL pro teams, for that matter–get little respect from the national media. But all they have to look at is history, and history reminds us that the city’s pro teams have only ONE championship (’95 Braves) in 156 seasons of competition. That’s abysmal.
This year’s Falcons have a great start on rewriting history. Do that, and the respect will come.

The falcons are 6 and 0 and they are lucky. They need some speed in the back field . Turner is a good back but at time he look like a division 3 fullback. If you were to compare Mc fadden to Turner on your turf you would have to give Mc. a B- and Turner a D. The defense looked horrible but we are 6-0. Please Mr. Goodell can you please suspend Turner for the season for conduct detrimental to the football team. He is one of the reasons for the offense recent struggles. You can’t expect MR3 to keep pulling us out of 2nd and 3rd and longs after we hand the ball off to the slowest back in the nfl who only gains an inch and not even a full yard. It is painful to watch him run, I actually change the channel when he have the ball on first down because it is predictable what is coming next. For those blaming the entire o line for pass protection, first let me give props to S Baker because he has been outstanding. Now we can point the finger at the right side and say what happened to Clabo. He is getting destroyed in pass protection. We finally solidify the left side and now we have a problem with the right side. Crazy how this happens to the Falcons.
