Atlanta Falcons: Shrugging off skeptics

The students and faculty at Clifton Elementary School were uninhibited in their enthusiasm for the Falcons who dropped by Tuesday for a surprise visit.

The exuberance for the team seems to be more measured among NFL watchers.

The Falcons are 5-0 for the first time in franchise history and the only team in the NFC with a perfect record. Their star players get their due, and various media power rankings have them near the top.

Yet there might be nagging skepticism about the Falcons’ staying power, as illustrated during ESPN’s pregame show Sunday. Studio analysts answered the question that probably is on the minds of more than a few Falcons fans.

Can you trust this team?

“Sounds good … smells bad,” Keyshawn Johnson said.

“Unless you win in the playoffs, you’re going to be known as ‘next year’s champions,’” Mike Ditka said.

Johnson and Ditka made their comments before the Falcons defeated the Redskins, but it’s doubtful that the victory changed their views. The proof will come in the playoffs for the Falcons, who have provided plenty of reasons to doubt them after they flopped in three of the past four postseasons.

Falcons linebacker Mike Peterson said the team doesn’t talk much about such skepticism, but called it “a good thing.”

“I would rather be the underdog team or the team that everybody is doubting vs. a team that everybody is pampering and pumping it up,” he said. “Inside that locker room, we know what we have to do.”

The Falcons have to keep winning games to secure their third consecutive playoff berth. Winning the NFC South is a goal, too, because it would assure them at least one postseason game at the Georgia Dome.

Quarterback Matt Ryan said the Falcons’ recent playoffs failures serve to remind them that they can’t be satisfied just because they are winning now.

“Absolutely,” he said. “We have players and guys that have been around for a long time and understand what it is that we need to do. And, at the same time, I think we have guys that feel like we haven’t played our best football yet.”

The contrast between the Falcons’ regular-season success and postseason failures has forged their reputation.

Since Ryan, general manager Thomas Dimitroff and coach Mike Smith arrived in 2008, the Falcons are tied for the second-most victories in the NFL. But in the postseason the Falcons haven’t measured up to the other teams in the top five in victories since then: New England, Baltimore, Pittsburgh and New Orleans.

“I don’t really think about it too much or worry about what the outside perception is,” Ryan said. “For us, as players and being a part of the team, it’s just all about trying to win games and giving ourselves a chance at the end of the year.”

Falcons players and staffers fanned out in the area Tuesday for the annual NFL-United Way Hometown Huddle, a league-wide volunteer program. The Falcons said they had full participation among their players.

At Clifton, Falcons players, cheerleaders and the team mascot participated in a physical-education class with students. Team owner Arthur Blank couldn’t join them as planned because of a scheduling conflict.

Well, they’ve done 4 more things this year than the aints have. I suppose the aints will always be harping on their Tonya Harding Memorial Trophy they got in 2009 by dropping to the lowest level any team in the NFL has ever gone. I guess living in the mud and stink makes anything else smell sweet. Congrats for winning a subpar bowl, PiSS.

As a die hard loyal Falcons fan, I love my team, but we have major issues on defense. Our cornerback play really has been good, but our defensive line struggles at times and we give up way too many yards on the ground to be a top-notch team that will win consistently in the playoffs. In my humble opinion, I believe the defense needs to out perform the offense on a consistent basis (i.e. if your an A- on offense you need to be an A+ on defense to win). What are your thoughts on this?

People have to also remember that the talking heads on these shows need to make statements that are sometimes perceived as negative/controversial in order to pump up their ratings…….just the way it works.

I think it is a good thing that the Falcons are flying under the radar of the national media talking heads. If they keep wining games nothing else will matter and the naysayers will continue vanish. GO FALCONS!!!! Let’s rock the Dome again this Sunday!!!!!

I really do prefer it this way. It’s really less stressful. I’m just enjoying the season.

For that matter Keyshawn Johnson hasn’t really ever done anything either and it’s been an incredibly long time since Mike Ditka did anything of merit. He destroyed the Saints with one of the stupidest trades in NFL history since.

Well, I’m happy the Falcons are winning…I hope they keep it up.

Beat the good teams when you play them – that’s how you prepare for the playoffs.

….unlike the Dawgs who cringe at the sight of a strong opponent.

But then….the Falcons have a full time, committed Football Coach who’s only focus is on making the players reach their maximum potential so they can collectively achieve the team’s goals.

Seems like a good recipe.

I agree with @FalconBikerDude on the defense. The defense has played good at times but hasn’t shown the consistency yet. To counter that, they’re an opportunistic type of Defense that is causing a bunch of turnovers. Every time a tackle is being made, the players are trying to swat/strip the ball, which to me is something that never happened when BVG was here. Besides when the Falcons blitz, they don’t have a pass rush whatsoever, which is really disturbing. Has anyone seen Ray Edwards? He must be working part-time for us because the only time I saw him was when he got an Unsportsmanlike Penalty against the Broncos. Please let me know if you’ve seen Ray Edwards. Will the real Ray Edwards please stand up! I guess I’m more of the old school type and go by the mantra ‘Defense Wins Championships’ but the NFL has changed. It’s a passing league and it’s now the offenses that are winning the championships.

I do like that the talking heads aren’t giving the Falcons any credit. Dirty Birds flying under the radar is a great thing. RISE UP!!!

Past champions show that a great defense can compensate for a mediocre offense, ie Ravens, Steelers. The reverse is true too, ie Patriots, Cardinals (NFC). The Falcons offense can score and dominate time of possession. That will help the defense. The D will get some turnovers and put the offense in good field position to score. Special teams will do their share, too. Falcons are a really good team.

I think I like this team more because they are focused on the things they can change. These analysts were salivating over the Panthers this summer… hows that working out? The Packers… hows that working out? The Saints….hows that working out?

The defense has struggled up front, Babs is a good pass rusher but is just ok against the run, Jerry has gone quiet after being good the first couple of weeks, but last game wasn’t a good showing for anybody but Tony G. We can’t have too many games like that and expect to win. Luckily they get a bye after next week because they need it…

You can’t have your cake and eat it too. Teams today, under the cap rule, can’t have multiple talented players on both sides of the ball. If you have many talented (High Paid) players on the offense, like the Falcons do, means less cap room to fill the defense with talented (High Paid) players. So, the defense is going to have holes based on the imbalance. Teams like the Ravens are imbalanced leaning to the defense. The Falcons, imbalanced leaning on the offense. JMO

The reason JSS posts are not getting any responses is that people know to scroll past them. The only thing a Saint fan talks about is winning a Super Bowl that was served up to them on a silver platter. Its like reading news about OJ Simpson. Irrelevant. Now if they want to talk about Breezie needing a milk crate to see over the line or the fact they have won only 1 game all year, now that would be entertaining and worth commenting about. Other than, they can stay irrelevant just like Cleveland.

@JSS
This is the thing. Every real Falcon fan knows that in the past the team hasn’t did much and has failed for the most part in the playoffs.
The difference is because we know this, we don’t need to keep being negative and hammering this obvious. Point home over and over whenever the Falcons do something good. We are able to get pumped up, overjoyed and live in the moment, which is something that people who are not depressed are able to do.
In addition, the past failures have no bearing on what the birds do or do not do now. Different players, ages and experiences of the players and coaches. If the past is so overwhelming important as some of the doomsday Sayers think, ask the saints fans how that Super Bowl win is helping them this year,
If you think the falcons fans have no basis for being happy about the team and can seem to keep the fact that they could stumble and probably won’t win the superbowl( which every team can also say) out of EVERY post they make here, I’d say that’s a healthy, normal way to live.
Just come off the idea that you are in the know on something that other people aren’t. We just prefer to have fun, enjoy the ride and hope that it works out and don’t have failure on our mind every moment and a doom and gloom attitude about our team.

Any true Falcon fan that has followed this team for 51 years is a skeptic. Will they win a playoff game? I believe they can and will this year. Will they win the Superbowl? I’m a skeptic because this is my Falcons who have always found a way not to win it all. One game defines my skepticism best. 1980 Atlanta vs. Dallas in the game we were supposed to win easy and blew it.

When a team starts to win on a regular basis, such as the Falcons, expectations go up also. As a looong time Falcon fan AND season ticket holder, I’ve had the unfortunate pleasure of going through some bad seasons and some good seasons, however, the ultimate goal is winning championships. Until the Falcons win one, there will be a certain level of doubt. I say, we should all enjoy what they are doing on the field this season and try (and I mean try) not to look ahead to the post season. But Mike Smith & Co. know what the ultimate goal is. And in turn, eliminate the haters!

I’ve been watching football since I was a little kid (over 30 years). Critics and talking heads are almost always right. Especially the radio guys. The defense is a good linebacker short – I’ve watched Dent the last couple of games and he has been pretty useless on the field – a non factor. Other players are covering his shortcomings. He’s slow to react and looks lost on most plays. Tough to have a top defense when you are short a player on most running plays.

Very excited for the Falcons at 5-0,but as many have pointed out the Falcons disappoint in the playoffs. So we will see. I think we have a great shot this year with the changes we’ve seen in the secondary and the passing game, but the run defense has been suspect and is ranked near the bottom of the league. Could the loss of Curtis Lofton come back to haunt us. Akeem Dent hasn’t played a whole lot so hopefully as the season plays out he can fill that void. Falcons seem to be bringing him along slowly also dependin on the opponent. he did not play a lot against Denver, but played more against Redskins. Also when are we going to start holding Ray Edwards accountable. Barely heard his name all season. If he steps up his pass rush,we will be a better team.

The sports media has always hated the Falcons… and this year does nothing but shine a light on their bias and make it an inarguable fact.
The question now becomes, ‘why’? Did the former Smith ownership somehow sin them in another life? Did the city of Atlanta fail to produce enough caffeine-laden expressos to quench their thirst for a pregame high? Or is it because the Falcons market was so severely hit with the arrival of the Panthers, Titans and Jaguars that we just don’t mean that much anymore?
Whatever the reasons, the obvious is just now too obvious to be ignored.

If your team isn’t geographically placed in the Northeast, or your team doesn’t have that marquee player that the media doesn’t fawn over, ESPN doesn’t want the country to know you exist. If your team IS in the Northeast, then report after report will come out about you, regardless of what you’re doing on the field. Because of our past history, it’s really easy for the national media to overlook us, to belittle us, to tell everyone we suck at playoff time. And that’s just fine. It’s true, and it keeps us under the radar. The NFL coaches and players know what we bring to the field every week, and believe me, they respect the Falcons. We have 11 games to play. After that…if there IS an “after that”…we can prove them all wrong. Ball’s in Atlanta’s court. I like our chances.

Alot of these “pundits” are that way…Chris Collinsworth, Trent Dilfer (although he appears to be rather intelligent), Eric Davis(???), Keyshawn Johnson, who else…Draft Day Ditka. “Gloom and doom?” Eeyore moments are tethered to the franchise past, present, and future until they pull a Steve Young moment… Enough of you are seeing the holes. The MIC is not an issue unless teams finally run and don’t stop them until they cry uncle…

And the obsession with fantasy rivals continues… Here’s the difference with your Saints comparison, that team had won playoff games and been in a NFC championship game (2007 against the Bears), and not to get into y’alls silly pissing contest, they were only two years removed from that and went out and added key pieces Sharper and Vilma-08)… That is a big difference from a team whose only additions were coordinators and Samuel. They are still playing massive amounts of zone. Every time they’ve seen an athletic TE someone has been used. I will give them credit for tuning people over, but Nolan hasn’t schemed away their run exposure. Teams have beat them self being cute in the red zone (Carolina-direct snap/Washington roll-out)…

Yeah the Redskins did get some rushing yardage, but remember that the Redskins’ TDs came on an interception return and a freak 77-yard play on busted coverage. Our defense has done a pretty good job keeping most teams out of the enzone. Sometimes statistics can be misleading. I saw the first game the Falcons ever played and have seen a lot teams over the years. Dungy and Ditka are both right and since they both own Super Bowl rings (as players and coaches), then I will go with them rather than the rest of you chowderheads. Elway didn’t win a Super Bowl until he had a running attack to take the pressure off of him and until the Falcons under Dimitroff, Smitty and Ryan win playoff games, they will have accomplished nothing. Truth hurts but it must be recognized. They are still my guys and the Falcons are still my team.

Larry, So KMBA means exactly what? Explain yourself genius… Hint: And it better only contain 3 letters…

And by the wrong again Larry, if I gave up my season tickets on January 7, 2007 while Michael Vick was still on the roster, tell me what that means?

You’re the one with the agenda… Whether be your little tirade on September 18, 2011 (yeah, shame on me), or continual twisting of facts to please your little base of acolytes, I ain’t skeeeeeeered!

On the other hand, you’ve built up this fantasy in your mind that you need so badly to have it win just once… It consumes you… 4 years of failures later, you’re begging for it to hit just once so you can puff like an adder… Just like Cicadas, y’all are going to live for “one” chance, too bad like most you’ll never get to unload, tasty meal for bigger animals on the food chain…

And if I wanted to make it racial, I’d add an extra “B” and it still wouldn’t be racial until I tell you and ilk to (insert letters here) you person who is lacking in pigment (which I would not do)…. C’ya!

What these “chowerheads” dont understand is that there is only one champ every year…..so irregardless if we win a playoff game or not ( Since that is what most of you negative nancys are so all about) what happens if we dont win the last game of the year?! More dumping Dans dumping on the home team! We happy! Not satisfied….HAPPY to be 5-0! Not one fan on here is satisfied….not one! But what the heck is wrong with us celebrating 5-0!? Come on man!

There was almost NO discussion of the Falcons in they playoffs last year because the talking heads seemed to know that we would get beat by the Giants. We did, but no one expected it would be so ugly. Those guys on TV do know their stuff so they emphasize the problems over the many positive points on this team.

On defense you really have to like our turnover ratio. That is huge. For a few weeks early in the season we disguised our looks and had a “freak” defense. Carolina and Washington figured this out and nearly beat us. The defense and running game both need serious work. The offense is really rolling and if we keep racking up the points we will go far! We have a great team this year but more importantly we have the foundation that ensures greatness for several more seasons to come!!!

We understand that this team has to win in the postseason for any of this to have any merit. But for now, its impossible for them win in the post season since its October. So what should the fans do? Not get excited because they havent won a post season game yet? You want the fans to get to excited AFTER they win in the post season, then we’d all be be called bandwagoners or fair weather.

The most concerned I have been thru these first 5 games was on Sun. when Ryan looked like the deer in headlights (scared) Ryan from previous years. He is such a dichotomy, because he is Matty Ice when it is crunch time, but seems to be nervous and lacking confidence in the early going of playoffs (or last weekend, a game that was on the road against a tough opponent). He did this against Green Bay in and NYG in last 2 playoffs. So, after the first 3 games against the AFC West, I was liking what I saw in terms of a perceived change in attitude and toughness, but think we had a glimpse last weekend of the scared, tentative and turnover oriented Matt Ryan that we don’t like.

I hang with the winners in life: leaders of good will, positive thinkers, good examples to our fellow man, and, apropos to this thread, fellow Atlanta Falcon fans that are truly grateful to be consistently competitive for five straight seasons with a shot–just a precious shot–at maybe achieving success beyond the regular season but one that still enjoys one game at a time.

JSS is just an angry racist (remember his recent “ya’ll can KMBA” comment?) that abandoned the team after 2007 (gave up his season tickets after many year) because a black QB was imprisoned to no fault of the Falcons and a white QB was drafted thus terminating his interest.

This is why he teams up with anyone, ANYONE, that has an agenda against the Falcons, especially one where there’s a currently a black QB starting like Philly and “MattCHOKERyan.”

Truly sad that such a sharp mind is so angry and bitter…what a waste!

Shame on you, JSS!

Well stated and thought out Larry. I never really was a fan of that QB. Oh, he brought excitement to the Falcons don’t get me wrong but he still doesn’t take care of the football, just like he didn’t back then. Never Ever had a touch pass. Heck of a deep ball though. I was always hollering for Schaub to be put in………..more of a prototypical QB and a damn good one at that. What’s that old saying, “The more things change, the more they stay the same”.

I see the trolls are out ruining a perfectly good football blog. Remember folks….it takes two to argue. ON TO FOOTBALL!

I think its very easy to find holes in our defense. I can remember when it was said that the Packers couldn’t get to the SB because they couldn’t run the ball. I don’t recall the Cardinals having a lock down run stopping defense when they went to the SB. At the end of the day, once you get in the playoffs, its about match-ups. Two years ago, pass defense was our achilles heel and Green Bay ate us up. Can we repeat what the Cardinals did? Will we be matched up with a team that has our number? NYG gave up 150 to SF in the NFC Championship, but somehow won the game.

Our offense is the key to winning our first playoff game under this regime. If we can put points on the board, force teams to pass, we’ll be in perfect position to advance in the tourney.

The Packers only had to run the ball once during their run to the Super Bowl… Guess who that was?

As far as for the Cardinals, the NFC fell perfectly for them… Once they beat the Falcons, they hit a Carolina team with the most streaky QB since Jeff Hostetler under center (Jake Delhomme). And then the Eagles in the NFC championship with a defense on its last legs… That’s a pipe dream, a team that one-sided hadn’t made the Super Bowl since the 85 Patriots…

______________________

The team hasn’t been around for 51 years, but close enough. That 1980 game vs Dallas followed a meaningless (playoff berth already clinched) end-of-season game against the Rams that the Falcons blew. That LA loss marked the beginning of a major decline for the franchise. Champions WIN–even when they don’t have to.

Your skepticism is well-founded, but hopefully short-lived. We’ll know in a couple of months.

Really tired of the national media that blasts us for not winning in the playoffs yet. What is more desirable of these two choices, make the playoffs and lose in the first round or do not make the playoffs at all?

By and large, the vast majority of the media have been unexpectedly favorable towards the Falcons. I thought there would be some erosion since they didn’t blow out teams they should have, but so far it’s been minor.
Surprisingly, Ryan still leads ESPN’s MVP watch, and there’s little derision of that in the comments, except for the usual Saints fans, but nobody’s paying attention to them.

Saints also had the #1 offense in the league and one of the best in history. Falcons are not even top 10 this year. One other thing, in 2009 the Saints were a much better running team than the Falcons and this alone will kill the birds in the long run.

@ coleski

I agree with you on a few points, I’ve been a Falcons fan a long time and have been let down many times as well. I also agree that we have to take it one game at a time. I also know that things change and one of those is now it’s Mike Smith here and not Rankin Smith, that’s a huge difference. And after the losing mindset for so many years, we now have a winning mindset, even if that hasn’t translated into the postseason YET. And I do mean yet. Another thing has changed. My favorite show back when I was a kid was Hawaii 5-0, NOW it’s ATL 5-0, and that never existed until this past Sunday. Four straight winning seasons, soon to be five. That’s CHANGE we can believe in.

Because the coach’s know he is a flop!! I think T.D. should eat his salary..Where are your kahonnas Arthur Blank??
The ONLY reason the Falcons are 5-0?? WILLPOWER! Think about it! They have willed themselves to win, collectively as an orginization! You either will yourselves to win or will yourselves to loose..the choice is their’s..Lets all face it..they don’t have the best players, but they do have the willpower to overcome all odd’s, win every game and that includes the Super Bowl..Go Birds..You have the will power on your side!

The good news – I do not see a dominate team in NFL except maybe Patriots (at least offensively) – I keep thinking our run defense is going to cost us if we can’t get that straight.
Why would Tony retire – he has lost several steps but his hands are size 15 – he doesn’t drop anything he gets his hands on and he has turned into a decent blocker. If he retires, we need to draft tight end and running back – Turner’s run is over – aging is a bitch.

“Saints gave up 450 yds of total offense in the NFC Championship game during their run.”

When you can outgun the opponent you can do that, you nuts are still buying that you’re going outgun teams that aren’t one sided and don’t have a propensity to turn it over in the playoffs… Man, that is the absolute recipe to get your hat handed to you… The Colts had more weapons and they got the mess jacked out them in the Super Bowl… Why? Because the Saints made them one-sided in the last 4 minutes.

The Niners have championship game experience now, the only team that’s touch them was the Vikings who got the game of his life, and he’s not Sonny Jurgensen sitting back there taking 20 minutes to get to the endzone when they can get pressure with 4 rushers and don’t have to play zone…

There is only one and a half match-ups that favors the Falcons if things play out: The Cardinals (they have no running game) and possibly the Vikings because of Ponder. If Adrian Peterson is anywhere near being himself, all bets are off… No other team is one-sided except Seattle, I doubt they make because they still have two battles with Niners in front of them… Green Bay’s fate was sealed in Seattle and Indy… If the Eagles finally go 55% run 45% pass, hey they can host a round 1 game and then make life miserable for someone like the Cardinals did in 2008… The rest of y’all assertions are based on the Falcons being able to turn on a run game against balanced teams… SMH

5-0 is cute but...

October 10th, 2012
8:02 pm

This season is a bust if the Falcons don’t at least make it to the NFC championship game. A wildcard victory is not enough, especialy when this QB and head coach have been together 5 seasons without a single playoff victory. What you keep missing JSS is that yoy find a way for every other team to give the Angry Birds issues….however your argument lacks because not once have you or will you state the facts about;
1. What if Turner starts running like he did in the Carolina game.
2. What if the D fills holes with C.Peters and gets better with the running game
3. What if we are 5-0….had to stick that in!
4. What if the offense gets better…..thats frigging scary because thats all these guys keep talking about…how they have not played a all around game on offense..
5. What if teams have to keep choosing who to cover in this offense
6. What if the coaching gets better…is that possible…?
7. What if Ray Edwards shows up
8. What if people start showing how afraid they are to travel to Mr. Robinsona neighborhood
9. What if teams keep respecting Samuels the way they are
10. What if our safties finally step up and play big….wait they are and remember you were not a fan of these two guys at all!
I could give you 50 more what ifs for the Falcons just like you have given us the what ifs for all these other teams…..except the Falcons. Respect the Angry Birds!

I like the tenacity that this team plays with. We are 5-0 and still there are a lot of things that can be tuned up. The passing attack is relentless and Matt Ryan in the no huddle is downright dangerous for any defense. I think Dirk Koetter has opened up this offense and making it fun for the players to show up to work. Defensively I feel like everything will work itself out over time, the run defense will improve a lot when Peters comes back after the bye week.

Well, the critics are right, but this team seems to refuse to go away. Some teams make the playoff, but go one and done then fall apart, making it all look like a fluke. That has not happened here, this team might lose playoff games, but they refuse to quit. Nor had Ryan lost to a QB in the playoffs who is not on a HOF trajectory. Let him go head on head against some loser QB like Cam, or RG3, you know, guys he had no problem beating like a yard dog, and you can bet, he will get his playoff win,….But what are the likely hood that they well ever make the playoffs…LOL. I know it is a long way to go in the season and great teams are measured by playoff success instead of just regular season. However, I personally feel that this 2012 Falcons team will get the job done in the playoffs this season as well. From watching them so far this season, I just think the overall chemistry and attitude is so much better than a year ago. I truly think this team is much hungrier this year to win in the playoffs. Again, I was going by memory, I just remember that RL was the guy closes to the receiver….But him not turning his head does bring back a memory….Fact is, Bart threw 3 picks and did not score a point in the 2nd half after scoring in the first 4 possessions…..But like I said, the team never recovered.

I can tell when a team “has it”, and this team looks like the Cardinals & the Seahawks a few years back when they went to the Superbowl. Softees with no bite. Matty, we really appreciate you spending time with the kids, but you need a shot of HGH and work on that motion in the pocket. Until you put 11 vs 11 instead of 10 (offense) vs 11 (defense) these receivers are gonna get banged up before the playoffs even start!

Nah, you’d have to gone through Pittsburgh when they were stomping folks. As they proved with a third string QB, they had Atlanta’s number, the same goes for the Patriots… You may have won playoff games simply because the AFC West has been so sporadic… Those are the teams the AFC North and East have feasted on…

Regardless, the same team that knocked the Pats and Steelers out of the playoffs got is the same team that knocked us out, we just had to play them a little earlier due to the luck of the draw….Sometimes the other QB is better, ask Tom Brady and Roth…Once the guard changes and all the QBs drafted before 2006 are gone, you will see what Ice is all about. He is learning nothing is easy, that you have to work hard in the offseason and come back better than ever….What a shame our previous franchise QB did not have that mentality, for one he had a little success, he got distracted… ATL would have a few SBs by now, just like everyone predicted, what a shame.

@inkspot, yes…those were some fun teams to watch, John Jefferson, Charlie Joiner, Kellen Winslow, Wes Chandler etc…those guys could flat out make some great catches and the Chargers were my favorite AFC team back then. Fouts was really good, but he owes a heck of a lot to some awesome receivers. That team had a shot to go all the way in Jan 1982 but got slowed down by the frozen turf in Cincinnati.

Anyway, a couple of those circus sideline catches Jones made last Sunday reminded me of some I remember from the Air Coryell offense days.

The FALCONS is the name of this team. For the one’s that keep calling them the Dirty Birds understand there is not one player from that time left on this team. Other teams in the NFL don’t rename their teams so why do Falcon fans? The fans of the past know that this team is nothing like the old Dirty Birds and the players and organization are better overall team. SO STOP IT.

Let’s qualify for the playoffs first, then win the division and see where we are at…..We finally have the coaching we need to win in the playoffs… Nolan is using some “smoke and mirrors” right now with the Defense and once Corey Peters gets back, that will help a ton….

Its really interesting that the “if’s” all favor the other teams in the NFC and go against the Falcons. Its amazing how a team that’s averaging 29.6 points a game (2.3 less than the 1-4 team that won the SB in 2009) can’t be expected to put up points against the top defenses in the NFC. Last I checked, you just have to outscore the other team by 1 point to win the game. With the new coordinators, that’s not as hard as you may think. I’m not guaranteeing the Falcons will be in the big dance, I’m just saying that your apparent guarantee that they won’t ignores current stats and actual game results. For instance, you contend that the Niners lost due to Ponders “career” day. That’s the way the highlights made it look, but he only threw for 198.

Bottom line, the Falcon’s defense is second in the league in take-aways and the team is #1 in the league in turnover ratio. That’s a recipe for success.

Our team is doing it right… not worrying about what the skeptics are saying and just focusing on one game at a time. Atlanta is new to having a good team so most fans don’t know what to wish for. Fans also need to focus on one game at a time. Many are worried about the Superbowl while we need to focus on Oakland. If our team does this and continues to improve at the pace they have demonstrated, they will be the best team in the NFL come Superbowl time. I enjoy each game.

For Dent haters, I think they did an outstanding job managing their budget. Dent is a young man who is learning his craft. He is not at Lofton’s level yet but he has a higher ceiling. If the Falcons had spent all their budget on Lofton, their defense would be terrible. It is so nice that he can cut his teeth on a team where other great linebackers and linemen can give him a little help. Weatherspoon didn’t look so great his first 10 games either… not many newbies do. He will get better every week and Mr. Nolan is plenty smart enough to win with the hand he is dealt. There are 11 guys on defense and the scheme has to support the ones who are on the field at any given time.

Oh, and by the way, a great defense that holds a team to zero (0) points can NOT be beat and a great defense can score an average of 14 points per game. I know that Falcons leadership did not used to think that this was possible. That is until the first playoff game at home last year when the Giants held the Falcons to zero offensive points for the whole game. By the way, our Falcons defense in the first half held the Giants to zero points and scored 2 for a first half win… it CAN be done (see 1985 Bears) but is tough with NFL salaries being what they are.

The outside world is skeptical of our Falcons because they have been perrenially bad and very inconsistent. An occassional good year and then into the toilet. They had poor organization, the players consistently performed at their worst and the fan base was considered a bunch of thugs (to the extent that they thought “Dirty Birds” was an appropriate name for their team).

This team has character, talent, intelligence and lots of football skill. They are hardworking and accountable, they play as a team and they focus on the task at hand. They are continuosly improving. What more does a fan base want… this is the team we have dreamed of. They aren’t there yet but they are on their way and after 16 games, I’ll bet they will be READY… that is what it takes to win playoffs and they are working on it… GO FALCONS! YOU ARE RISING UP!

No I contend it was a “career day” because he made decisions that day he’d never shown the ability of doing against very good defenses. His two TD passes were game changers, and his TD run against a Niners D that had pummeled Stafford the previous week were all a part of it… He was a part of 21 of their 24 points directly… For a talent like Ponder, it was a career day…

It’s funny how ESPN has their agenda for every storyline. Four weeks ago, it was all about Peyton Manning and how he’s one of the greatest. When the Falcons picked him off three times and won the game, ESPN reported that Manning was throwing the ball away, allowing the Falcons to take the lead. No credit to the Falcons defense – they weren’t bad throws, they just made great jumps on them.

Last week, the sports media spun Falcons-Skins to say that we won because RGIII was concussed and had to leave the game. Really? How many touchdown drives did RGIII engineer in that game? Try 0. Skins defense scored a TD and they had 3 FGs otherwise when RG left the game. But everyone likes to assume that somehow RGIII would have won the game if he stayed in.

And everyone seems to be knocking 5-0 now because of how the Falcons lost to the Giants and Packers in the last two years, both Super Bowl champs.

You know what I have to say to all that? “Come On, MAN!”

The 49ers lost to Minnesota becasue they were BEAT! SIMPLE!!! No smoke and mirrors! Any given Sunday for any given team in the NFL!!!! That is why the Falcons record is not a mirage! Each and every team BRINGS it every Sunday! EVERY SUNDAY!!!!!! Pro Teams dont have to be motivated, they come to KICK ANGUS every week, regardless of the record. Maybe in week 16 some mail it in, but those are the players who take the acronym NFL (meaning Not For Long, because coaches, GM’s and all of the likes are watching for the following year to see if guys have the guts to finish the year to be invited to get paid next year).
Trust me, no team lays down, no team makes mistakes intentionally! The other team on the other side of the ball has plenty to do with a team losing. Yea you would like to not turn the ball over, or tackle the guy when he is running or knock down a pass or sack the QB, but the other team on the other side of the ball is doing everything they can to avoid that team from doing that.
49ers GOT BEAT by a better team on that Sunday! SIMPLE….no need for “highlights” making it look that way, the guy had a good day and helped his team BEAT the 49ers……..
So we have to come ready to play every SUNDAY…….which we do!

To hell with the critics!!! They never liked the Falcons to begin with, which is why I stopped watching NFL Network, b/c if your team isn’t among the 6 or 7 they like, they don’t show you any love. It KILLS sports casters to talk about and give praise to the Falcons b/c they aren’t the Ravens, Packers, or Patriots of the league.
This steams all the way back to the 1998 season when we were given a snow balls chance in hell of winning at Minnesota for the NFC Championship. The Falcons stunned everyone and won in OT. Ever since, the Falcons have been the red-headed step child of the league b/c they beat a Vikings team that was 15-1 and the darlings of the NFL (sort of like the Saints now).

You sir are awfully arrogant and condescending for someone who is not nearly as well-written and knowledgeable as you think you are. If I didn’t know any better, I would say you were Joe Biden posting from the basement bunker of the White House to amuse yourself because you’re rather useless and unstimulated by your current station in life. But then again, Joe Biden can actually be funny from time to time and does know a little something about politics (his debate charade not withstanding) when he’s not pandering to the extreme constituents of his misdirected party.

But I digress, this is not a political blog, nor should it be (apologies Mr. Ledbetter), but as long as DOL continues to let you troll around this blog trying to bait folks with your perceived superior level of knowledge and condescend to people who clearly care about their hometown team, then you should simply REALIZE that there are always people who are smarter than you, nicer than you, more respectful than you, simply put, BETTER THAN YOU.

So no matter how much football knowledge you have or assert to have, and no matter how much you try to convince everyone of such by nitpicking them and putting them down, it will not change the fact that the FALCONS ARE A GOOD FOOTBALL TEAM. And they have hardly reached their potential, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

Tomorrow, Matty Ryan and his offense will have their way with a very unimpressive Raiders defense, and even if they finally discover a pass rush, the statistical reality is that they cannot stop the run and I suspect that Mike Turner will have a very effective, if not, big statistical day en route to a rollicking romp over the black and silver. Yes, there will be sterner tests to come and the Falcons still have a ways to go, but the ‘balanced” teams you speak about, other than perhaps San Fran, really don’t exist. Every team in the NFL has weaknesses of some kind and there are no infallible teams on a given Sunday.

So get over yourself and temper your comments with some degree of respect if not humility. Otherwise, you will likely struggle to find success in whatever media related aspirations you may have because at the end of the day, no one really likes a “know it all.”

Respectfully, GOTT (and you got GOTT!)
