C — Running backs: The Falcons had 28 rushes for 83 yards (3.0 per carry). Michael Turner ran well late and scored the game-winning touchdown. He finished with 67 yards on 18 carries.
A — Receivers: Tony Gonzalez and Julio Jones turned in big games. Gonzalez had 13 catches for 123 yards for his 29th 100-yard game. He also had his 99th touchdown reception, which tied him with Don Hutson for eighth on the NFL’s all-time touchdown reception list. Jones had 10 catches for 94 yards and a touchdowns. Harry Douglas continued to block fiercely in the run game.
A — Offensive line: The unit gave up just one sack and three quarterback hits. On most plays, Ryan had time to scan the field.
B — Defensive line: The unit did a good job maintaining their rush lanes against Robert Griffin III and kept him from breaking loose on some runs. Defensive end Kroy Biermann was used to drop into coverage on some defensive calls.
C — Linebackers: Sean Weatherspoon led the team with 11 tackles. Stephen Nicholas had four and Akeem Dent had two tackles. Washington’s Alfred Morris rushed 18 times for 115 yards.
C — Defensive backs: The secondary blew a coverage that allowed Washington a 77-yard touchdown. Dunta Robinson had a strong game with two pass breakups and an interception. Thomas DeCoud continued his ball-hawking ways with another interception.
A — Special teams: During the coin toss, kicker Matt Bryant was still testing out his cleats. The extra work led him to change to his long-spiked cleats on the wet track. They were key to getting proper footing on his 53-yard field goal. Bosher had a net average of 38.5 yards on six punts.
A — Coaching: You have to give the coaches credit for sticking to the game plan. The Redskins rope-a-dope strategy helped them take a lead into the fourth quarter. The offense kept chipping away until they outscored the Redskins 17-7 in the final quarter.
NEXT UP: The Falcons (5-0) host the Oakland Raiders (1-3) at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Georgia Dome.

The Skins had one (1) conversion on 3rd down! They scored 1 TD on a pick 6 and another on a big pass play, give them credit on that one … but still … dominating defense … and so many weapons on offense … fear the Falcons!!!

Whoops! That’s what happens when you push enter instead of shift! Agree with most of the grades DOL. Maybe a B + for the receivers… saw a couple of drops, but then again, maybe Julio’s TD makes up for them. Spectacular catch in the endzone! And maybe a B+ for the special teams…hated to see that hold on the opening kickoff. Negated a great runback from my man…Jaquizz!!! All in all, a steady performance from our team. If you think we didn’t play up to our potential, try remembering the Smith years. we are light years from those kind of performances!

We need a running game. Take away his TD stroll and Turner had fewer than 3 yards per carry. That will not take a team far in the playoffs. Ryan threw 52 times …

Besides that blown coverage our DBacks deserve a B! They played well and had to tackle a guy who was running like he drove a 91 Mazda and that now he wants a Benz! These guys are getting better every week and to think we really miss Grimes. We will continue to get better as the weeks proceed but here we go again with another running back who can run the ball this week at the nest. I would like to see our D Line get after it a little more this week by putting some pressure on Palmer and making him get off his mark and move his feet this week. Lets go BIRDS! On three RISE UP!

Michael M. – It’s all about how one approaches the game… and since everyone is different, we each have our own individual personalities that react differently. Hell, I holler, kick and scream when we’re losing. When the Dawgs crashed & burned in Spurrier’s chicken coop this past Saturday, I buried my face in a gallon of beer and tried to drown myself.
Just because folks get a little edgy and worried during a game doesn’t make them bad fans. It just makes them like everyone else, different than everyone else.

Agree with both of you, Michael M, and Answer this. Those slamming the Falcons don’t seem to remember the “Dark Days” of the Smith regime. While we have had a few missteps in the last 10 years, overall we have progressed dramatically, into a true top-notch quality NFL team. I strongly disagree with the special teams grade. Who can remember the last time the Falcons returned a punt for positive yards? Punt returns have gotten so bad, I find myself happy when they simply fair catch it without letting it hit the ground. Kickoff returns are the same way, aside from the first return of the season by Jaquizz, not a single drive this season has started beyond the 25 yard line.
Matt Bryant is near automatic, and Bosher is putting his kickoffs deep in the endzone, but beyond that the special teams are a liability.
The defensive grades are harsh, they gave up 10 points to an offense averaging 30 points per game. Also, 1/3 of the passing yards came on one busted coverage for the TD and 1/3 of the rushing yards came on one run right before the missed field goal. I can live with giving up one or two big plays a game.

Teams have adjusted to what the Falcons are doing on defense. If they’re in nickel package then they run, if they’re in base defense they pass. Coaching has been creative on the offensive side of the ball lately, but I’d like to see the defense move the beer man to MLB to see how he does. He has the speed to go sideline to sideline and he’s use to fighting off offensive linemen.
DLed, as Smitty if this is a possibility next time you interview (if there’s a possibility of playing Biermann at MLB). Appreciate it bow tie player!

Great to see the Falcons come through again. Started out a little rough, but we made adjustments, and Mike Nolan is utilizing this unit correctly for the first time ever. The coordinators on both sides are making all the right moves.
Matty looks stronger mentally and physically. This is the best Falcons team I’ve watched since 98.
The only thing I think we can do better is run defense. Sure we got burned that one play on passing, but the run is the only thing I worry about without a good MLB, our run defense is going to be picked on. Our pass D is very, very solid. We also play the nickel so much that it’s tough to stop the run. Overall though, I’ll take this defense over our defense over the last four years hands down.
Keep it up guys! This has been a great year so far!
Go Falcons!

It’s amazing, and kind of disheartening, to see other teams running back hit the line of scrimmage and bust out the other side and always seem to gain positive yardage. Then you watch Turner constantly briskly walk into the backs of his own lineman and chop his feet until he’s tackled for either a loss or no gain. Every freaking running play. He just needs to sit until the 4th quarter and the opposing defense is tired – that seems to be the only time he can be productive.

I was just thinking the same thing Truckstop, I was expecting Dent to be playing better than he has, especially since he played against sec opponents in college, right now, my only issue with the Falcons right now is how the defense seems vulnerable against the run (and the inconsistent pass rush from the front 4…especially Edwards). I believe Dent is going to have to tighten up and be more physical against the run, his pass coverage skills seem to be okay, it is just his run stopping ability that seems to be lacking.

In the NFL, wins are not easy. So it’s great to be 5-0. However, the falcons MLB position is awful. I thought Dent was decent at UGA. Most of Alfred Morris runs were because Dent was out of position. He couldn’t disengage from blocks yesterday.
The Falcons will make the playoffs but to get that elusive playoff win, they will have to stop the run. Imagine if the falcons are playing the 49ers. They will probably run for 200 yds against the Falcons defense

Looked pretty flat with all the 3 and outs early, as Ryan just seemed off. It started to look like he was reverting back to his big game deer in headlights playoff mindset, which lined up to his pick six and fumble and errant throws. Looked the same way last week against Panthers ,, but became Matty Ice when it counted. They need to come out like they did against Chargers and Broncos and take no prisoners from jump street… not wait and find themselves with their backs against the wall. They are a really good team that could be great. Koetters game plan did not look real good the last 2 weeks, as I thought Mularkey was back, so figure it out Dirk. You have an offensive beast that needs to be unleashed.

Good win. Defense was solid, minus the blown coverage.
Truth be told, if Ryan had thrown a bit higher over Kerrigan, this game could have easily been a 24-3, 27-6 type of blowout.
RG3 got hurt, but the offense wasn’t doing anything fancy anyways. It took the backup rookie to get the only TD for them, on a blown coverage of all things.
Figured we would win, just had to keep at it.
Whatever the reasons were for the slow start, weather, bad field, Julio’s hand and drops, etc, it worked out in the end.
Saints fans can get all jumpy about 1 win, had it not been for a borderline roughing the passer call, they would have lost.
The Chargers always fail when it counts most, and Rivers just shakes his head away.

Great win, but too many mistakes; turnovers on offense and gave up too many rushing yards on defense. The middle linebacker position is a problem. Dent misses a lot of tackles, he’s got to get better or the formula will be to run the ball down their throats. Never thought I’d see a Falcons team where pass defense was the strength of the team.

Can’t help but laugh about the pitiful win by the Caints last night……………………with all that poor tackling by their defense I was really surprised they were able to stop the chargers ……………….but then again they actually got many breaks from the officials calling the game and the last drive by the chargers trying to come back and tie it up……………oh man, those chargers were robbed on that final series…………………………I can’t wait until we get to play the Caints……………..really looking forward to it………………………..hahahahahehehehehahahaheheheheheeeeeeeee

Dent is not pulling his weight. The inside linebacker should be feared. Dent is a sheep. Teams will continue to run on us until this is corrected.

There goes our Michael .M (MORON)… Don’t you realize every team kind of figures out Failcons defense by now. Failcons barely won last 2 games. Save all that trash talk for Raiders. No matter how bad Saints are right now, they will stick kick Failcons a$$ twice a year. Lol

Even if failcons go 14-2 (offcourse those 2 losses to Saints) they still can’t win a playoff game even if its a georgia dome. I guess you need to score more than 2 pts to win a playoff game.

Don’t think I can agree with the A on the OLine. Sure, Matt’s healthy but it should take more than 3 yards per carry for the A. B, B+, OK, but A’s require 4.5+ ypc. Still a struggle in short yardage, even with “elephants.” Props to Dunta on his most visible game yet. Also to ASamuel, for the hard work and sharing the wisdom with all the DBs. It’s showing.

Ok guys i have to say i think your being a little harsh on our run defense yes i think we need to tighten it up a bit but our defense was able to stop the run when it mattered the most aside from a few big plays given up our defense played shut out. @seenb4 the weatherspoon hit was clean when quarterbacks run with the ball they are deemed a running back and therefore treated like one , RGIII made the choice to run with the ball and weatherspoon made him pay for it hands down. So get the illegal hit bull outta here, our o line played great i just think turner is having a hard time finding the holes and cutting to the outside, as for matt ryans mishaps, there werent really a whole lot but we gotta take into account these guys were playing in the rain and playing in the rain is alot more difficult, but even though there was rain they played well and more than good enough to win. RGIII gettin hurt probably helped the skins because as we all could see we shut RGIII down he got knocked out in the third quarter and had less than 100 yards throwing and not much on the ground either, our defense was dominant and for that we should be extatic go falcons lets get to 6 and 0 next week and hit the bye for some serious rest and recouperating but please stay on your game we are coming into the harder part of the schedule and a butt load of division games

It looked like the Chargers were going to bury the Taints, until that rookie tapped the runt’s(Brees) facegaurd with his helmet, and the taints got one of those ole-timey ‘NFL-Taints-favorable-calls’, that brought that interception that resulted in a Chargers TD, back.

I watched the Charger and Saint game last night too. I was appauled that they still have the Ref’s on the payroll and feeling sorry for them. That win will have a asteresk by it just like the Super Bown win. Sad. As far as I am concerned the Saint are still OhFur.

giving ryan a C+? give me a break. How do the receivers and tight end (the other end of the passing game) get an A and the QB get a C+? The pick part of the pick 6 rest with the o-line that can’t keep a defenders hands down. Ledbetter’s grading system = D- Give me a break.

I agree with most of the grades execpt the QB maybe he should have gotten a B-.Everybody thats on Michael Turner STOP IT…..The Falcons are passing more this year than they have in the past. Lets not forget under Mike Smith we have always been top 3 in the league in rushing. Michael Turner has always been top 3 in the league in terms of rushing yards and TD’s. I hate the blown coverage. But it is still early so I definitely expect the defense not to have anymore blown coverages. I like the record and we can always improve but, please yall act like we are susposed to be perfect. And Cleveland Ave Turk you a fool lmao. Go Falcons!!!! The Real A Town Got Your Back!!!!!!

A little harsh on Ryan – another 4th Qtr comeback achieved. Whilst he did suffer a few errant passes this week – the first all season to my mind – I still counted 4 dropped passes. A little hard to punish the receiving corps however – as the drops were from Turner, Rodgers and oh my two from Joe Hawley – back to C/G next week please Joe…. 5-0 and the Raiders at the Dome coming up…!!!!

The grades were fair there were alot of mistakes made on both sides of the ball. The good thing is the Falcons can score points. Now if they shore up stopping the run the sky is the limit. If you looked at the Jets and the supposedly best team in football- the Texans last night, If the Jets had an offense that could consistently score points they made have won the game.

I’m bbbbbaaaaaacccccckkkkk! My beloved Saints are back on the winning track! We are now 1-4 with 12-4 staring us in the face. Chalk up yet another record for Brees, he’s is with out a doubt the best QB in NFL history. I was at the game and had passes to the locker room, Brees reach in his croch and gave me his cup…mmmmm I have it hanging from my Pinto rear view mirror. Works good as an air freshener too. GO SAINTS!!!! 12-4 baby…YEAH!!

This is not college football where style points matter. The W is all that matters in the end. The Falcons went on the road and played outside in the rain. Last year they would have lost this game, see game at Tampa. They showed the NFL that the knock on them being a dome team is no more. The Falcons can and will throw the ball, a lot I might add, even in the rain. Formula for success in the NFL, win your home games and half your road games. So far Falcons have done just that.
People want to annoint the Texans the better 5-0 team. Looking at their schedule, they have played the same caliber of teams the Falcons have and they too could have lost that game last night against the Jets, but what happened, late INT sealed the victoy, just like the Falcons. They Won and that’s what matters.

A fair assessment with a couple of exceptions: Ryan’s performance was far from a “C”. He fumbled a snap and threw an interception so he did make 2 unforced errors in the game. However, aside from that, he threw with precision and used his brain to select the right play/receiver nearly every time. He ended up with 52 passes, nearly 350 yards and two touchdowns and without his precision and exceptional QB ability, the game would have been lost. The O-Line still needs work. Their pass blocking held up pretty well against a marginal defense but got crushed on most running plays. Ask yourself how running backs like Turner, Rodgers, Snelling get limited to 2 yards per carry. There is a brick wall right in their lane on most plays. If blocking doesn’t improve, we will just have to run a different variety of plays. The line has not been able to consistently support running between the tackles. I also think the secondary did a stellar job except for the one BIG mistake. The misscues are relatively easy to fix and I trust that the coaching staff is ON the case. If they just continue to improve at the pace they have demonstrated, they will be hard to stop. Without these few misscues, they would have been dominating. GO FALCONS! YOU ARE RISING UP!

C — Linebackers: Sean Weatherspoon led the team with 11 tackles. Stephen Nicholas had four and Akeem Dent had two tackles. Washington’s Alfred Morris rushed 18 times for 115 yards.

Actually, I’ll give Ryan a solid B and the receivers a B+. Ryan would have had two 50+ yard completions had Julio held on to the ball. He could have easily been 36 of 52 for 420+ yards. Not complaining about Julio as he made an incredible catch and I believe his hand is still an issue.
We’ll be fine, but Ryan put the ball in his hands twice on bombs and he dropped them. Looks very similar to Roddy White his first couple of years and I have all the confidence in the world that he will be even better than Roddy in the coming years.
