Falcons quotes after the historic 24-17 win over the Redskins

“Phenomenal! I looked up there at one time and he had 10 catches. He ended up with 13. The guy just amazes me every time that he goes out there on the field. There were times when they tried to take him away and even when they tried to take him away, we were able to complete the ball to him. He’s just unbelievable. In my mind, he’s the greatest to have every played. I know I don’t put myself out there, but Tony Gonzalez is the greatest tight end to have ever played the game.”

–Falcons coach Mike Smith on tight end Tony Gonzalez

“I think the biggest thing for us at this point is to focus on getting better. Although our record is right where we need it to be, I don’t think we have played the way we are capable of playing. We certainly want to focus on improving.”

Quarterback Matt Ryan on starting 5-0

“That was a great play by him. He’s a very good player. He’s a big guy. I need to do a better job of trying to get the ball around him. It was a mistake on my part, but a great play on his part. That hurt us in the first half. We put it behind us and kept moving.”

Ryan on his interception to Ryan Kerrigan, which was returned for a touchdown

“It was just one of those bang-bang plays. He got outside, kept going and it happened so fast when we hit each other. Unfortunately, he went out of the game, but hopefully he’s doing good.”

Linebacker Sean Weatherspoon on his tackle that put Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III out of the game

“I couldn’t tell exactly what happened. My back was to [Weatherspoon]. I was just trying to dive out and make a play on him. Spoon was doing the same thing, too. [Griffin] is a good player. He can make plays with his legs. So we tried to keep him in the pocket. If not, we tried to rally to him and keep him getting down the field on us.”

Defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux on the play Griffin was injured

“We’ve been doing that pretty much every game, getting them turnovers. We did a good job creating turnovers.”

Defensive end John Abraham on the Falcons’ two late interceptions

“I’ve got to go to [block] the guy instead of waiting for him to come to me. That’s weird.”

Guard-fullback Joe Hawley on playing in the backfield

“Tony Gonzalez, what can you say about it? The guy is still making plays. Unbelievable. I don’t think it’s time for him to be done next year.”

Center Todd McClure

“He was in a tough situation. That was pretty hard. He’s been thinking about that all week. He knew the ball was possibly coming to him. He juggled it a little bit and he took the big hit, too. Those guys, him, Pete [Konz] and Mike [Johnson], are doing a good job. We call it the elephant package when we send in the big linemen.”

McClure on Hawley, who failed to catch either of the two passes thrown to him

“It was good today. I felt like we gave Matt some good time. We had a couple of breakdowns late in the game, but anytime that we give No. 2 time, with the play-makers that we have, if we keep doing it enough, he’s going to make plays. He came through for us again in the fourth quarter.”

Dunta Robinson had his best day as a Falcon today. Even before the interception in the 4th Quarter, he was clearly the most dominating player on Defense today.

@DavidGilmour: Please don’t mention the saints or their fans, they are unworthy of our attention. However, today Dunta Robinson is worth our attention.

I was not confident about playing against RG3, but the defense continues to shine. Next week should be a good game for us, because Carson Palmer is a known Quiter, so our Defense should be able to make him do what he does best…..Quit on his team.

Is Matt Bryant human? It seems that the man is always plus or minus one degree or less. The long snapper and holder have been great also. I could go on and on because I love almost everything about this team. The only scary and worrisome dimension is the near total inability of Jacquizz Rogers to be an effective runner. Stalled drives caused by Rogers almost cost us the Carolina game and only a clutch third down pass prevented a stalled drive caused by Rogers from costing us the Washington game. On the plus side Rogers did have one very good play that kept a drive alive for points. I wish Rogers could be like Sproules but I don’t see it yet.

Ragged win, but a WIN nonetheless. I agree Dunta had his best game ever as a Falcon. Beast is the right word for him on this day. He’d be my MVP for the game. Great job, Dunta! Ryan was throwing high a lot early, but seemed to settle in after awhile. Not real fond of us running J. Rogers between the tackles. I would consider utilizing him as what we used to call a “scat back”. Toss sweeps. Screen passes. That sort of thing. Pretty much love Nolan’s defense and Koetter’s wide open offense. I’ve been saying for 40 years why not use the passing game to “open up” the running game. Maybe somebody finally listened…

I totally agree on Dunta! Great game and his INT put the icing on the cake!!
Matt Bryant is simply fantastic and he doesn’t get enough praises. Ask the Redskins how they feel about the missed FG :-)

The game was closer than it should have been, mainly due to our mistakes (INT, dropped passes and 1 blown coverage). These things happen, but we have to improve the run defense.
I like Smitty for saying the team can play better, but I’ve heard that a bit too often from him (especially last season…..).

Let’s take a 6-0 into the bye week and then show all our potential during a stretch of four tough games!

I followed the Falcons since I was 8 yrs old when they came to town. I know football pretty good (coaching and playing) and I haven’t seen a more SOLID all around team than these ATL Falcons. Every time I sit down to watch them play this year it is like Christmas morning as a kid lol.

Dunta is an absolute beast. Seriously, he’s changing the game from his cornerback spot. Cover corner? My a$$. He is a tackling machine. Big props to Julio, Tony, Matt Bryant and Matty Ice.
I have no problem with Jaquizz. I think he is contributing quite nicely.
