Andre Rison chronicles his financial troubles in "Broke."

ESPN’s “30 for 30″ series of documentaries returns tomorrow night at 8 p.m. with “Broke,” a look at pro athletes who accumulate great wealth but later meet financial ruin.

Among the subjects is former Falcons wide receiver Andre Rison, who made more than $19 million during his career but declared bankruptcy in 2007 after he failed to pay child support. You can see some excerpts from Rison’s interviews in the film in the trailer for ‘Broke’ at the 30 for 30 Web site.

“Broke” is by Billy Corben. He also directed the “”The U,” the “30 for 30″ documentary about the University of Miami football program.

I was wondering yesterday which of the players we are watching now will be broke 10 years from now. When you see stories about players being drunk and going to jail its not hard to figure out who are the high risk candidates.

Big Play Ray Buchanan, of a Duluth address, smelled of alcohol and admitted he’d had one drink, according to police. He was placed under arrest and transported to the police department, where he blew a .091 on the state alcohol breath test, police said. The blood alcohol limit in Georgia law is .08.

The internet and blogs has turned many of you to a bunch of chicken s#it cowads. It’s quite easy to laugh and make fun of those who, for whatever reason are down and out, especial without kowing specifically why thigs happened. I am sure many of you who hide behind these vague names have never been late or have always paid for everything. Be it Curt Schilling Andre Rison or even Warren Sapp or your neighbor, celebrating others misfortunes, when no on can determine if you have a clean house is sheer cowardness.

Why dont oyu post your social security number so someone can run your credit… Perhaps not because you would be just as embarrased as either of those mentioned and not mentioned are. Others situations, either self enduced or not isnt tha funny… FOr those who mentioned not having respect for those mention; did you ever have respect for them in the 1st place? I suspect you never thought of having respect or not prior to this blog… Get a life…

Todd, you are way off base. Misfortune is when you are a victim of a violent crime or your child has a serious illness. This story is about “missing fortune”. The reason nobody on this blog has sympathy for these clowns is that they didn’t need to buy 16 cars or get involved in “investments” of any kind They made those choices and those choices were poor decisions in hindsight. There is no misfortune here! Why does a guy with $19M need “investments”? He can live nicely off interest income alone. Why take on risk when you are already “winning”?

Rison shot an innocent bystander (ok it was just the disco Kroger) because his girlfriend challenged his man-hood. Not dealing with a lot of grey matter there. As for Buchanan, the “big plays” were always for the other team. Seemed like the last few years for the Falcons he was either getting burned or being flagged for interference. And lastly, only in Atlanta can the conversation go racial over this kind of thing. As Ron White (yeah thats right, White) says “you cant fix stupid”.

Michael V. has blown through nearly $30 million since filing for bankruptcy in 2008 — nearly 95% of his total income — TMZ has learned.

According to legal docs filed in his bankruptcy case, V. made $31 million since he went belly up — that includes his Eagles salary and various endorsements and other business ventures.

The math is pretty simple — V. had to pay a total of $29.6 mil — of that, $10.9 went to taxes, $9.2 mil went to creditors, $2.7 went to lawyers and accountants, and the rest is for various things, including child support and living expenses.

All tolled, V. is now left with around $1.5 mil. That’s nothing to sneeze at, but considering what he made it’s pretty shocking.

Go from nothing to something, you may end up back at nothing. These athletes need money counseling, which is something not taught in schools. Instead of teaching kids the hypotenuse and obtuse angles, teach them how to balance a check book and budget for their household.

Todd, Todd, Todd…I am not a “cowad” ?? simply stating my opinion…I live a fairly pedestrian life…I have worked all my life, making a decent living for my three Daughters, wife and I…I live near the coast in a comfortable home and have been financially responisble my entire life…nothing to brag about, and average Joe…and made PLENTY of mistakes…I was not blessed with the level of athletic prowess required to play professional sports and rake in millions of dollars a year…if indeed I would have been, you would have known all the mistakes I made Todd as I would live in the public eye…and rightfully so…I do not think anyone losing all they have is “funny”, but I find it nauseating when a hot shot throws it away when there are so many people work hard just to get by…why don’t YOU get a life…I have one

In most cases the problem wasn’t spending. Wealthy player-idiots go broke by giving a power of attorney and investment discretion to lawyers and financial managers who inflate the player-idiot’s financial statement with debt financed investments that mask the theft of funds to the managers. A person who has extremely high income should avoid inflating his financial statement. Debt is a killer.

Look, modern day athletes oftentimes are from poorer urban places, with less education and little guidance from parents – - if there are two parents. When they come into money they’re clueless about doing the wise thing… investing it wisely knowing the sporting career won’t last long. PERIOD.
