Atlanta Falcons: Turner flashes his pass-catching ability

Falcons running back Michael Turner breaks free for a first down past Carolina Panthers James Anderson, right, and Captain Munnerlyn during the first half at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday , Sept. 30, 2012

With the offense needing a jumpstart and something to slow down Carolina’s pass rush, Falcons running back Michael Turner stepped forward.

He rushed for more than 100 yards for the first time this season and caught the first touchdown pass of his career to help the Falcons defeat the Panthers 30-28 on Sunday at the Georgia Dome.

To go with some new wave, pass-catching Turner, he mixed in some of his vintage work on a 17-yard run where he ran through about five tackles.

“I just kept my legs alive,” Turner said. “They were tackling up high. Nobody was really hitting my legs, so I just kept it alive and kept churning.”

In order to slow down Carolina’s pass rush, the Falcons turned to screen passes.

Turner, not known for his pass catching ability, took one of them 60 yards for a touchdown to put the Falcons up 24-14 early in the third quarter.

“He did a heck of a job of getting into the end zone,” wide receiver Roddy White said. “He ran the ball hard today. He got in the secondary. That’s who he is. If we can get that guy into the secondary, he’ll keep punching those guys and moving the chains.”

Turner saw that he had some good downfield blocks from tight end Tony Gonzalez and White on his screen.

“That’s what kept me going straight down field,” Turner said. “I was thinking about going to the sideline, but I saw Tony making a great block and I didn’t want him to get a holding call, so I wanted to run right off his butt.”

Turner rushed for 103 yards on 13 carries, for a whopping 7.9 average per carry. He caught three passes for 68 yards.

“I just had my opportunities out there today and I took advantage of it,” Turner said.

In nine games against Carolina, Turner has rushed for more than 100 yards six times and has scored 11 touchdowns. He rushed for 139 yards against the Panthers last season on 27 carries.

“I don’t know,” said Turner, when asked about his success against Carolina. “Schemes I guess. I just hope to keep it going.”

Turner was just happy to do his part and help the Falcons pull out a late victory.

“We were talking about it on the sidelines,” Turner said. “We always feel that we have a chance to win. In the Georgia Dome, the fans have been seeing some great finishes lately. Why not add one more.”

I knew Turner’s DUI would wake him up and improve his attitude about his diminished role in the offense. The irony is, he played so well that his role was expanded.

During the Falcons first possession I was screaming at the TV; not to run Turner three straight times when you have a 1st & Goal at the 4 yd line is pathetic, IMO. I was screaming (not literally) that if the Falcons don’t establish some type of running game over the next 12 weeks, we can forget about any type of success in the playoffs.

And then of course my old arse fell asleep and missed most of the game (and I didn’t DVR it). UGH! Needless to say I was happy when I read that not only did we win, but Turner ran for over 100 yards. I think Dirt Koeter must have heard me? haha

A DIVISIONAL GAME THAT WAS NOTHING SHORT OF A HARD FOUGHT DOG-FIGHT BY BOTH TEAMS………

TOUGH LOSS FOR CAM & CO……..A TOUGH WIN FOR FALCONS……FALCONS MADE A TON OF MISCUES ON BOTH SIDES OF THE BALL………BUT WAS VALIANT ENOUGH TO WALK AWAY WITH THE WIN……….GOOD TEAM EFFORT WHEN IT COUNTED…

NEXT WEEK DOESN’T GET ANY EASIER @WASHINGTON REDSKINS..

Somebody must have spiked Magic Mike’s Gatorade because he was a mad-man. Had to look twice to be sure that was Turner.

By the way, the Saint are still OhFur!

Turner played so well that it was hard for Jaquizz to get in the game. I think Rodgers and Snelling’s play will be crucial down the stretch. Also Ashante Samuels is due for a couple of picks. Ray Edwards doesn’t have a sack yet and there are some players on the team that haven’t step up. I believe the Falcons will improve from game to game.

SEEN THIS BEFORE has been Missing In Action. No more gloom and doom for Atlanta Falcon fan. Right about now he wants to be a Falcon fan real bad. We have an NFL team that is leading their Division. He has a brown bag over his head that says Aint’s going nowhere.

As good a pass as that was, the catch was even more stupendous. Rowdy did it. Lovin’ this All22 on my international gamepass; I have to go back and see the skyview.

56 seconds to go on their own 2 yard line Matty Ice smoothly called the play, “Go long and I’ll get it there. We’re takin this one out.” 10 men looked at the cool headed passer and knew all they had to do was their job. They lined up 98 yards from home knowing they had this one. The snap. all hell broke loose , bodies flying and a lone receiver ran faster then he ever had as far as he could with to Carolina dogs all over him. The Ice slung the ball back and hurled. 60 long yards later their came “The Catch” with no way to lose written on it.
Carolina 350 ponders shrank down to 115 pound geeks all over the Dome as Matty Ice trotted up field for two more plays and the best foot in the NFL made the field goal look like child’s play.
These Atlanta Falcons are somehow different this year. Not the corny swagger but man-style confidence. They have paid their dues and this year they intend to cash in. See you’all in New Orleans.
