UPDATED

FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons coach Mike Smith addressed the arrest of defensive end John Abraham on Tuesday.

“Anytime anyone in our organization shows up negatively in the paper we are very disappointed as an organization,” Smith said. “There are certain policies and procedures that we have to follow in terms of the NFL and this is a legal process and we’re going to let the legal process and run its course.”

Smith would not say if Abraham will be disciplined and added that he expected him to play on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

“Our discipline policies are something that we keep internally,” Smith said. “There are certain guidelines that are set by the NFL and NFLPA that were collectively bargained. Anything that we do, we’ll keep that internally.”

Abraham was the second player arrested over the past week. Running back Michael Turner was arrested for driving under the influence after the Denver Broncos game. He was started and played the entire game against San Diego.

“Anytime that there’s something negative, there is cause for concern internally whether if it happens once or every five years or every six months are once a week,” Smith said.  “There are areas of concerned. We are very disappointed, but we’ve got to prepare for our next opponent and that’s the Carolina Panthers.”

PREVIOUS POST

Atlanta police arrested Falcons defensive end John Abraham tonight at Atlantic Station in Midtown.

John Chafee of the APD’s Public Affairs Unit said were responding to a call about a woman threatening to jump from one of the buildings when Abraham refused to exit the scene. Chafee said police charged Abraham with obstruction of police and obstruction of fire fighters.

Chafee said the charges are misdemeanors and Abraham was booked at the Fulton County Jail.

Abraham did not respond to an email message and his agent, Rich Rosa, did not immediately return a message left on his voicemail. A Falcons spokesman also did not return a phone message.

“We are aware of the news regarding John Abraham,” the Falcons said in a statement. “We are in the process of gathering more information and we will have no further comment at this time.”

Chafee said the woman, who did not jump and was uninjured, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

According to a copy of the police report provided by Chafee, officers moved people away from the scene and put up crime scene tape to restrict onlookers from the area. The police report said Abraham entered the restricted area and was confronted by a firefighter who “repeatedly ordered him to leave the scene.”

Nearby officers then responded and ordered Abraham to leave, according to the police report. The report says Abraham “refused and insisted on continuing [farther] into the scene” at which point police arrested him.

Abraham is the second Falcons player to be arrested in the past week.

Gwinett County police arrested running back Michael Turner early last Tuesday on charges of DUI and speeding. Turner later apologized to the Falcons and the team’s fans for what he called a “bad decision on my part.”

Wow, this isn’t just two arrests roughly a week apart for the Falcons; it’s two players who are among the “faces of the team” and obviously veterans who should know better.

I really hope whatever charges are filed against Abraham don’t cause him to have to miss any time or games played. As far as the incident goes, it may have simply been a case of his emotions running ahead of his better judgment in what seems to have been a scary and tense situation; it’s for the court system to sort those details out. But you need to obey what the police tell you if they feel your presence might complicate it further; that goes without saying.

We don’t have the full story yet but never underestimate cops ability to overreact. Except for cops in alabama who are paid well to under react as long as you play for saban. Here is the breakdown on those who decide to become cops.

45% were bullies in high school and want to continue.
45% were bullied in high school and want to get even with everyone.
05% want to use the badge to steal and shake down people.
05% want to actually help people.

The last 5% usually become very cynical about the job and quit.

@dave — the city of Atlanta is run by Democrats, in case you weren’t aware. There are 2 sides to most stories, and Abraham might’ve had a good reason for what he did. “Abraham is second Falcon to be arrested in a week”? AJC readers, please start questioning the intent and manner of how your journalists report the news. What is the purpose of this headline? Is it to insinuate that the Atlanta Falcons are criminals? Given this arrests circumstancea, I’m not sure why this is being reported, but a more appropriate headline would be “John Abraham was arrested.” I’m also not sure why the Falcon’s and Abraham’s name are being looped together with the DUI of Turner. As a defense attorney, I can tell you charges such as these against Abraham are totally subjective and are often thrown out. In many cases, these type charges are the result of a ego power wielding officers hell bent on exercising authority over some one. This headline seems to attribute the actions of two people as generalizable to the entire Falcons organization. We must demand more of our reporters and hold them to higher journalistic standards. Too many of the AJC articles seem to be more about sensationalizing and attention grabbing headlines than actually reporting the news. More and more of the AJC’s stories are coming off tabloid.

See how conveniently they didn’t mention the name of the building or the fact that he is a home owner in the building he was attempting to approach……just another case of the shed a bad light black athletes. This girl was two balconies over and one down from me. She is so beautiful, splitting image of Kristen Stewart. Some of my other neighbors know her but I didn’t recognize her. We just kept talking to her and begging her not to let go of the railing. Kudos to management for getting the police offers inside to talk her down and equally important, to all the neighbors and by-standers who wouldn’t budge from encouraging her and giving supportive words that kept her holding on. Just goes to show, you never know what other people are going through…even now, I still can’t go out on my deck, still super shaken up by it.

Of course Falcon Fans most memorable arresst in team history was when Eugene Robinson was arrested for solciting a hooker the night before the Super Bowl. This leaves a bad taste in Falcon Fans mouths. Players need to stay out of trouble and focus on the season. This could be ourr year.

The stupid ignorant cops think they own the world. They don’t have the right to push people who are in no danger, and not in the way around! Just because a porker says you’re in the way doesn’t make it so. I’m sure Abraham is completely guiltless here, having had encounters with bacon products myself in such situations (not arrested but yelled at).

There’s not enough information in this story to make judgements about either the police or John Abraham. The police have to secure the area for the rescue, that’s not limited to the amount of room needed for equipment, that is to also control the crowd. Cops have no way of judging the volatility of the situation.
That said, did he know the girl? What man here would leave the scene if someone they knew or cared about was in danger? I might have been wrong, but if it had been my daughter or even one of her friends, they would have had to arrest me, too.

Its amazing how much trash people post in response to something so minor. This type of “arrest” happens ALL the time to people outside of clubs, concerts, and other various events. If you look at the charges, notice what’s not there. Public intoxication, resisting arrest, assault against an officer. As far as we can tell, JA pushed the envelope as a spectator (maybe even assumed that his celebrity would give him a break) and was arrested by a “by the books” police officer.

Race has nothing to do with this. I’m an African-American female and I can clearly see that. And its a story that can be linked to the whole Michael Turner situation, with the common denominator being the Atlanta Falcons. Anyone crossing a restricted area would have been arrested for obstruction, black, white, whatever. Ppl kill me, always wanting to throw out the race card when it isn’t valid or needed.

Obviously, this woman meant alot to him because he was willing to go to the clink for her. That’s just my guess.

Hey Sir Real, we are all of mixed races so give it a rest. Race has absolutely nothing to do with this. Doing dumb stuff has no race, creed, color, etc. Abe lives there, ok. How many times have people been kept from their homes for reasons of public safety? Happens all the time and you know it. I’m sure there were other residents that were’t allowed in either. They just didn’t feel they were entitled. Maybe Abe was just trying to get inside so he could watch the Packers get screwed on National TV? I don’t know. And if you noticed, a black officer was standing there watching the arrest so there goes your “because he was black” excuse that some people seem to want to use everytime a black person gets arrested. Are there any bad cops? Sure there are, but let’s look at each incident individually. My money says the charges will be dropped. Why? No one was hurt, he didn’t fight and he was only arrested because the officers had no other choice after he was given numerous warnings. Now, can we go back to talking FOOTBALL please! And yes, I am a cop. And anybody that calls ME a racist can KMA.

FAILCANTS have more player arrests than SB rings or points scored in a playoff game

September 25th, 2012

Trolling, trolling, trolling….Failcant fans are such easy targets…and will be until you win a SB, which we know is NEVAH…even when the Saints are down, they’re still better than you…FAILCANTS are a joke….such delusional zealots….queue the disappointment….it’s on the way….lmao…NO SB RING..lmao….

_______________________________________

If you have to tell us you are trolling then you aren’t a very good troll. By the way, all participants in the “Big Dance” get a Superbowl ring, the winners have a little more bling. “Zealots”….really, is that the best you can do….? “Queue the dissapoinment”? Actually, next time write CUE the dissapointment. “Even when the Saints are down”, and let’s face it, they are WAY DOWN, 0-3 in fact. AND in last place in the NFC South. Right now the MIGHTY ATLANTA FALCONS are in 1st place in the NFC South and we suspect that bothers you a great deal. Or, is this what you meant by the Saints are down: Your defense: 30th in points, 32nd in yards, 25th in passing yards, 32nd in rushing yards. You’re pathetic.

Complete idiots. If I were Arthur Blank I would have a sit down with these complete clowns and demand all cut thier hair like civilized people and speak like human beings or you’re fired. Can’t do that becuase these thugs have contracts that allow them to basically rule the world. Idiots. We pay our money and devote our weekends for 5months a year and right now the NFL and the owners are spittin on our faces. The questions is, WHY are you in his pockets? #MeatPeepers.

I could care less that you are sir because my perception of you all wont change when I’ve seen nothing but dirty ones for most of my life who have profiled and even KILLED an innocent lady who used to be my neighbor. (Kathryn Johnston. Officer Junier was notorious for his Zone 1 corruption) Sure there are a few exceptions and maybe you’re one of them…but perception is reality. Thsi stuff is bigger than football. Not enough of us on here calling for patience so we can receive more information to determine what really happened. Speaking for myself, if I knew the woman on the ledge, I probably would have done exactly what Abe did. I think he is a good man and has served Atlanta well since he’s been here. I guess you people calling him a thug without knowing the facts, have never been arrested or maybe you did something wrong and just weren’t caught. Quit being so self-rightous and ask yourself, “What would you do if you knew the distraught lady on the ledge?” The reason she was there doesn’t matter. ATLANTA 38 —-CAROLINA 17

Atlanta 4 – 0
Tampa 1 – 3
Carolina 1 – 3
NO 0 – 4
__________________________________________
That number on Atlanta’s score is probably just about right. But the Carolina points will be 14 or less. As far as the Caints going to Green Bay they should save the airfare and concede. The Pack is gonna open up a can of whup ass on that defenseless defense.

Let’s blog about something that will change our lives…STOP PROHIBITION! Smoke em if you got em. Let’s overcrowd the jails with pot smokers and let the violent criminals out! Maybe just maybe people will think about what we are punishing in this country. To say pot is not a drug is stupid…alcohol is not a drug. It has no useful effects on the body and causes more harm to our society than any other drug. Why the stigmatism concerning pot. Was John Abraham high? or was he drinking????? Hum…that’s what I thought. I’m tired of paying for laws that make no sense. Let’s open debate today and solve this before I die. This is like every other socialite that people put on high because they make money or have a lot of it. Yea I agree stay away from trouble its easy to do. But at the end these players, preachers, teachers, artistes, models and actors/actresses are human, until they make a conscience decision to stay straight out of the negative image of the public eye then thats it. Just remember regular people make the same dumb mistakes its just not publicized. We have tried and convicted them without knowing all the facts, the old saying there are 3 sides to any story. Dear OedipusTax- You’re the example I was looking for when I made that post. You don’t know what you are talking about. You can’t get oxycodone legally if you smoke pot. I don’t smoke it for that reason but I would if it were legal. It has been shown to be the last defense against pain when someone is dying of cancer. Maybe take the time to study the real issue here. Pot is just not as dangerous as you would think and oxy is more dangerous than you think. It’s not a revelation, it’s a scientific fact which is why you must be confused. Please study and blog intelligently. Abe was drinking and unfortunately lots of bad things happen when you lose your mind. Thanks Steve for understanding the real issue. Let us vote!
