UPDATED

FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons coach Mike Smith addressed the arrest of defensive end John Abraham on Tuesday.

“Anytime anyone in our organization shows up negatively in the paper we are very disappointed as an organization,” Smith said. “There are certain policies and procedures that we have to follow in terms of the NFL and this is a legal process and we’re going to let the legal process and run its course.”

Smith would not say if Abraham will be disciplined and added that he expected him to play on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

“Our discipline policies are something that we keep internally,” Smith said. “There are certain guidelines that are set by the NFL and NFLPA that were collectively bargained. Anything that we do, we’ll keep that internally.”

Abraham was the second player arrested over the past week. Running back Michael Turner was arrested for driving under the influence after the Denver Broncos game. He was started and played the entire game against San Diego.

“Anytime that there’s something negative, there is cause for concern internally whether if it happens once or every five years or every six months are once a week,” Smith said.  “There are areas of concerned. We are very disappointed, but we’ve got to prepare for our next opponent and that’s the Carolina Panthers.”

Atlanta police arrested Falcons defensive end John Abraham tonight at Atlantic Station in Midtown.

John Chafee of the APD’s Public Affairs Unit said were responding to a call about a woman threatening to jump from one of the buildings when Abraham refused to exit the scene. Chafee said police charged Abraham with obstruction of police and obstruction of fire fighters.

Chafee said the charges are misdemeanors and Abraham was booked at the Fulton County Jail.

Abraham did not respond to an email message and his agent, Rich Rosa, did not immediately return a message left on his voicemail. A Falcons spokesman also did not return a phone message.

“We are aware of the news regarding John Abraham,” the Falcons said in a statement. “We are in the process of gathering more information and we will have no further comment at this time.”

Chafee said the woman, who did not jump and was uninjured, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

According to a copy of the police report provided by Chafee, officers moved people away from the scene and put up crime scene tape to restrict onlookers from the area. The police report said Abraham entered the restricted area and was confronted by a firefighter who “repeatedly ordered him to leave the scene.”

Nearby officers then responded and ordered Abraham to leave, according to the police report. The report says Abraham “refused and insisted on continuing [farther] into the scene” at which point police arrested him.

Abraham is the second Falcons player to be arrested in the past week.

Gwinett County police arrested running back Michael Turner early last Tuesday on charges of DUI and speeding. Turner later apologized to the Falcons and the team’s fans for what he called a “bad decision on my part.”

Blame it on the replacement refs! They caused this to happen. The lady wanted to jump because the refs wanted to review the call. According to the refs, the woman jumped, so touchdown Seahawks.

The woman was going to jump if he Abraham not leave, the police had to forceably remove him and they are called racists?

John Abraham is a thug and will not show up fpr the Falcons when they need him. Once his career is over, he will be in prison

cops need to lighten up. Abraham was just trying to catch her if she did jump. As for a professional athlete drinking and driving; his impaired reactions are still better than 90% better than the usual maniacs driving around Atlanta.

Doesn’t really sound like much of a story. JA should have let the police and firefighters do their jobs and not gotten further involved. Sounds like everyone is safe and lessons were learned.

Gotta Love it!!

I thought I read an article earlier in the year that he was raising his nephews because they were in a dysfunctional situation. This is not good for the nephews to read, JA should raise his nephews and not worry about other people’s problems. What time did this take place? Also, maybe that women was one of his baby mama’s, does anyone know.

Let’s all say a prayer that the woman get’s the help she needs. As far as #55 is concerned he should have followed the officers instructions. What was he gonna do, catch her if she jumped? We may eventually find out more infomation about this.

“…WSB’s Richard Sangster reports Abraham was released Tuesday morning on $7,000 bond and left in a waiting car. Sangster also has been told Abraham has no connection to the woman.”

I hate this state with its underlying racial tension. We know what your word “thug” is the new substitute for you racist pieces of crap. Me being of mixed ancestry really makes me disgusted at this whole deal. The MAN, not thug, the MAN was concerned, some cop wanted to be famous and so he tried Abe. Come on, how did he really obstruct “justice”. This whole world is going down the piss hole because of people out there like this. But AJC will probably block my comment even though they know its the truth and their elitist overlords wont like it.

Keep it REAL

Its amazing how much trash people post in response to something so minor. This type of “arrest” happens ALL the time to people outside of clubs, concerts, and other various events. If you look at the charges, notice what’s not there. Public intoxication, resisting arrest, assault against an officer. As far as we can tell, JA pushed the envelope as a spectator (maybe even assumed that his celebrity would give him a break) and was arrested by a “by the books” police officer.

come on “sir real”………..
what does race have to do with someone being asked to leave a scene; especially if they don’t have any connection to the event or individual? why don’t you question why black children are not getting educated in metro atlanta, homelessness is rampant, the negative approach that georgians have toward immigration, crime, murder of young black men, re-gentrification, unemployment, the fact that the city of atlanta does not have the support of the governor, embezzlement by public, elected officials. pick a worthy cause and do something! instead of blabbing off about someone who makes more money in a year than you’ll ever make in a lifetime.

Race has nothing to do with this. I’m an African-American female and I can clearly see that. The only reason we know who crossed the police tape and why this is even in the AJC was because of his occupation, not his color. And its a story that can be linked to the whole Michael Turner situation, with the common denominator being the Atlanta Falcons. Anyone crossing a restricted area would have been arrested for obstruction, black, white, whatever. Ppl kill me, always wanting to throw out the race card when it isn’t valid or needed.

You are missing SirReal’s point. The point is people often used the word THUG in lieu of racial slurs.

Who said that there was alcohol involved. Also, how do you know he wasn’t trying to help while inside the tape?

It appears that in order for this to fit the negative stigma some wish to put on highly paid athletes, bad assumptions must be made. This is in no way close to Turner’s DUI. I wish folks would stop trying to sensationalize it.

I suspect that Mr. Abraham knew the woman that was attempting to jump. It would seem that he was attempting to render aid in convincing the young lady not to jump. The firefighters and police weren’t allowing him to do so. He insisted on trying to get in the room to talk her down. Obviously, this woman meant alot to him because he was willing to go to the clink for her. That’s just my guess.
I don’t know about this foolishness about him being drunk and wanting to get into his condo. Based on the info given, I think my scenario’s much more likely.
