UPDATED

FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons coach Mike Smith addressed the arrest of defensive end John Abraham on Tuesday.

“Anytime anyone in our organization shows up negatively in the paper we are very disappointed as an organization,” Smith said. “There are certain policies and procedures that we have to follow in terms of the NFL and this is a legal process and we’re going to let the legal process and run its course.”

Smith would not say if Abraham will be disciplined and added that he expected him to play on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

“Our discipline policies are something that we keep internally,” Smith said. “There are certain guidelines that are set by the NFL and NFLPA that were collectively bargained. Anything that we do, we’ll keep that internally.”

Abraham was the second player arrested over the past week. Running back Michael Turner was arrested for driving under the influence after the Denver Broncos game. He was started and played the entire game against San Diego.

“Anytime that there’s something negative, there is cause for concern internally whether if it happens once or every five years or every six months are once a week,” Smith said.  “There are areas of concerned. We are very disappointed, but we’ve got to prepare for our next opponent and that’s the Carolina Panthers.”

Atlanta police arrested Falcons defensive end John Abraham tonight at Atlantic Station in Midtown.

John Chafee of the APD’s Public Affairs Unit said were responding to a call about a woman threatening to jump from one of the buildings when Abraham refused to exit the scene. Chafee said police charged Abraham with obstruction of police and obstruction of fire fighters.

Chafee said the charges are misdemeanors and Abraham was booked at the Fulton County Jail.

Abraham did not respond to an email message and his agent, Rich Rosa, did not immediately return a message left on his voicemail. A Falcons spokesman also did not return a phone message.

“We are aware of the news regarding John Abraham,” the Falcons said in a statement. “We are in the process of gathering more information and we will have no further comment at this time.”

Chafee said the woman, who did not jump and was uninjured, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

According to a copy of the police report provided by Chafee, officers moved people away from the scene and put up crime scene tape to restrict onlookers from the area. The police report said Abraham entered the restricted area and was confronted by a firefighter who “repeatedly ordered him to leave the scene.”

Nearby officers then responded and ordered Abraham to leave, according to the police report. The report says Abraham “refused and insisted on continuing [farther] into the scene” at which point police arrested him.

Abraham is the second Falcons player to be arrested in the past week.

Gwinett County police arrested running back Michael Turner early last Tuesday on charges of DUI and speeding. Turner later apologized to the Falcons and the team’s fans for what he called a “bad decision on my part.”

Last week #32 gets a free ride from APD, this week #55! If you add the difference of 23, you get 78. The Birds don’t have a #78. I predict a win over Carolina with no arrest next week.

Abe thought he could help. Po-pos have a hard job,, but some are non-conpassionate ahose, and I know that for a fact. Until we know the whole story, best not to jump to conclusions. Most poliçe are true heros and deserve our respect. There are quite a few no matter where you go, that abuse their authority and don’t deserve to wear a badge. Being a cop doesn’t make you a Saint, but it doesn’t make you a bad guy either. Hope the lady gets some help and I also hope Everyone understands why police are called saftey-officers amongst other things…

How can anyone possibly think there is enough information in this article to make any kind of judgement? If you must make an assumption- assume he was trying to help! And, by the way, I am a forever Saint’s fan.

i was there,im from australia,i don’t know football or falcons or abraham, but the girl seemed to have her own agenda! thank god she didn’t jump, she is someones daughter!! the police were pretty intent on moving everyone back and he was probably just a concerned friend/boyfriend that thought if he could just say something to her it would help!! but this is only an opinion

The stupid ignorant cops think they own the world. They don’t have the right to push people who are in no danger, and not in the way around! Just because a porker says you’re in the way doesn’t make it so. I’m sure Abraham is completely guiltless here, having had encounters with bacon products myself in such situations (not arrested but yelled at).

I’ve got an idea. How about APD arrest some actual criminals.. you know the ones who live a mile away and are the ones robbing left and right in that area… oh wait, that would require an actual brain cell to do your job.. pitiful

You people are so quick to call him a “thug”…WHY? He is a multi – millionare, i’m SURE you live in more of a ghetto then he does. Black doesn’t equal thug. Even from reading this story it sounds like he was trying to help someone he knew, who lived in his building! Nothing in this story sounds like he was being a “thug”. AT ALL

I love it, some guys upset that the headlines say “John Abraham Arrested…two Falcond arrested in a week” as if it didn’t happen… An arrest is an arrest you tools!
As for the black guys who obviously posted, stats are stats…but gotta love the responses, it’s always the white guys holding them back… Yep that’s it! Try taking some responsibility, speak English and take off the costumes you call clothes… Oops that’s generalizing… Kinda like whitey holding you back! Goes both ways doesn’t it? No one wins on this one…everyone needs to just stop!

You self righteous people kill me. Quick to throw stereotypes and drop a few race jokes. Oh thug this and hood that. Most of you don’t even know how big of a humanitarian he is. Nor do you know the full story. Doesn’t matter how much he makes or how much his earrings cost. Last time I checked he was human just like the rest of you bums here commenting. Some what makes him exempt from douche bag police officers.

Abe hasn’t been in domestic violence disputes with his mom, or raping white girls at whim. Real loyal fans you guys are.

You probably are the same people who donated to George Zimmerman.

Kat, the people who are spoiled children are the “first responders” who think their sheeat doesn’t stink and that they are entitled to push people around without reason. Most of these people are just Joes who think they are heroes because they wear uniforms. Just try to find a cop to help when you really need one.

I will wait to find out if John knew the woman before I make a decision. As long as alcohol, drugs or domestic violence was not involved, I will give John the benefit of the doubt, considering the police aren’t always patient in some situations.

Can’t wait to get the truth. Disregarding two sets of warnings to clear the area is strange. He must of known the woman. Hope he wasn’t contributing to the cause of her being on the ledge. The only sack he needs to be focused on right now the 3 or 4 he needs to put on sCam Newton this Sunday. Players are people and have personal lives but they have to make wise decisions just like the rest of us. Hope he is making wise decisions. This season can be special if everyone focuses on the prize both at work and at home. Have to take care of both of them. Maturity Men, Maturity!!!!

Why does everybody jump to the conclusion that he was in the wrong? He probably has some connection with the girl and was concerned. Wouldn’t anybody who has a connection with somebody threatening to jump off a building try to talk them down? And the comment where he has multiple girls and this could have been one of them…so what? He’s not married. Is he the ONLY person who has ever dated multiple people at one time. Please look in the mirror before making stupid comments

There’s not enough information in this story to make judgements about either the police or John Abraham. The police have to secure the area for the rescue, that’s not limited to the amount of room needed for equipment, that is to also control the crowd. Cops have no way of judging the volatility of the situation.
That said, did he know the girl? What man here would leave the scene if someone they knew or cared about was in danger? I might have been wrong, but if it had been my daughter or even one of her friends, they would have had to arrest me, too.
