UPDATED

FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons coach Mike Smith addressed the arrest of defensive end John Abraham on Tuesday.

“Anytime anyone in our organization shows up negatively in the paper we are very disappointed as an organization,” Smith said. “There are certain policies and procedures that we have to follow in terms of the NFL and this is a legal process and we’re going to let the legal process and run its course.”

Smith would not say if Abraham will be disciplined and added that he expected him to play on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

“Our discipline policies are something that we keep internally,” Smith said. “There are certain guidelines that are set by the NFL and NFLPA that were collectively bargained. Anything that we do, we’ll keep that internally.”

Abraham was the second player arrested over the past week. Running back Michael Turner was arrested for driving under the influence after the Denver Broncos game. He was started and played the entire game against San Diego.

“Anytime that there’s something negative, there is cause for concern internally whether if it happens once or every five years or every six months are once a week,” Smith said.  “There are areas of concerned. We are very disappointed, but we’ve got to prepare for our next opponent and that’s the Carolina Panthers.”

Atlanta police arrested Falcons defensive end John Abraham tonight at Atlantic Station in Midtown.

John Chafee of the APD’s Public Affairs Unit said were responding to a call about a woman threatening to jump from one of the buildings when Abraham refused to exit the scene. Chafee said police charged Abraham with obstruction of police and obstruction of fire fighters.

Chafee said the charges are misdemeanors and Abraham was booked at the Fulton County Jail.

Abraham did not respond to an email message and his agent, Rich Rosa, did not immediately return a message left on his voicemail. A Falcons spokesman also did not return a phone message.

“We are aware of the news regarding John Abraham,” the Falcons said in a statement. “We are in the process of gathering more information and we will have no further comment at this time.”

Chafee said the woman, who did not jump and was uninjured, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

According to a copy of the police report provided by Chafee, officers moved people away from the scene and put up crime scene tape to restrict onlookers from the area. The police report said Abraham entered the restricted area and was confronted by a firefighter who “repeatedly ordered him to leave the scene.”

Nearby officers then responded and ordered Abraham to leave, according to the police report. The report says Abraham “refused and insisted on continuing [farther] into the scene” at which point police arrested him.

Abraham is the second Falcons player to be arrested in the past week.

Gwinett County police arrested running back Michael Turner early last Tuesday on charges of DUI and speeding. Turner later apologized to the Falcons and the team’s fans for what he called a “bad decision on my part.”

I think it is pretty simple….Somewhere in that melee Abe must have thought there was a quarterback and he had a bead on him…..he must have mistaken the cops and fire fighers for defensive linemen and so he tried his best to get around them….he was just being Abe and doing what Abe does………..

pursue the quarterback……

Sigh I love how we keep mentioning police state, yet the article clearly explains that it was actually the firefighters that were being obstructed and not the police. The police were not even involved until the firefighters couldn’t get him to stand outside of the tape. His charges are both obstruction of firefighters and police. God bless our firefighets and cops everywhere across America, you’re both under appreciated.

This will just give the naysayers and the Falcon haters that much more to talk about and about things not associated with the Team……………………..won’t be long before Fox sports and nfl.com get a handle on it and write up a story of their own………………………………………………

@dave — the city of Atlanta is run by Democrats, in case you weren’t aware. There are 2 sides to most stories, and Abraham might’ve had a good reason for what he did. The firefighters and cops could’ve been doing a good job, or there could’ve been a cop or firefighter with an over-inflated ego there, being unreasonable. We just don’t have the facts yet!

So he didn’t obey a police or firefighter’s order. After the 90 or so policemen all lied under oath in the case of the Samoan birthday party in LA, (because they were unaware that a neighbor videoed the whole encounter until afterwards), my knee jerk reaction is that there is more to this story.

John you can be that touched. It is always good to obey the cops, remember the Falcons are trying to make it to the Super Bowl. Don’t you guys start tripping on your own feet.

Actually, this is refreshing. An arrest that may actually have a story attached other than, “Perp had spent the previous three hours in a local T&ttie Bar…” Make it interesting, John!

I heard that Peria Jerry and Ray Edwards got pancaked by the barricade line and Abraham was the only one again that could penetrate thru the line to try to catch the falling girl:) He should have got player of the night by APD instead of the hand cuffs.

This is considerably less than driving / speeding drunk. We don’t know enough details to make a judgment. Perhaps he knew the woman. If a friend of my mine or family member was contemplating suicide, I probably would not leave the scene either.

I hate the APD; they only go the minimum. When I visited Los Angeles, the police there went out of their way to help me in an attempted car break-in. Here, the only time I see the APD is at a DUI roadblock.

“Abraham is second Falcon to be arrested in a week”? AJC readers, please start questioning the intent and manner of how your journalists report the news. What is the purpose of this headline? Is it to insinuate that the Atlanta Falcons are criminals? Given this arrests circumstancea, I’m not sure why this is being reported, but a more appropriate headline would be “John Abraham was arrested.” I’m also not sure why the Falcon’s and Abraham’s name are being looped together with the DUI of Turner. As a defense attorney, I can tell you charges such as these against Abraham are totally subjective and are often thrown out. In many cases, these type charges are the result of a ego power wielding officers hell bent on exercising authority over some one. This headline seems to attribute the actions of two people as generalizable to the entire Falcons organization. We must demand more of our reporters and hold them to higher journalistic standards. Too many of the AJC articles seem to be more about sensationalizing and attention grabbing headlines than actually reporting the news. More and more of the AJC’s stories are coming off tabloid.

Even though Abe might not have agreed that he had done anything wrong and maybe the cop was a smart ass, when the cops tell you to move outside the crime tape, the best thing to do is to do what they say because you can’t win.
