UPDATED

FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons coach Mike Smith addressed the arrest of defensive end John Abraham on Tuesday.

“Anytime anyone in our organization shows up negatively in the paper we are very disappointed as an organization,” Smith said. “There are certain policies and procedures that we have to follow in terms of the NFL and this is a legal process and we’re going to let the legal process and run its course.”

Smith would not say if Abraham will be disciplined and added that he expected him to play on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

“Our discipline policies are something that we keep internally,” Smith said. “There are certain guidelines that are set by the NFL and NFLPA that were collectively bargained. Anything that we do, we’ll keep that internally.”

Abraham was the second player arrested over the past week. Running back Michael Turner was arrested for driving under the influence after the Denver Broncos game. He was started and played the entire game against San Diego.

“Anytime that there’s something negative, there is cause for concern internally whether if it happens once or every five years or every six months are once a week,” Smith said.  “There are areas of concerned. We are very disappointed, but we’ve got to prepare for our next opponent and that’s the Carolina Panthers.”

Atlanta police arrested Falcons defensive end John Abraham tonight at Atlantic Station in Midtown.

John Chafee of the APD’s Public Affairs Unit said were responding to a call about a woman threatening to jump from one of the buildings when Abraham refused to exit the scene. Chafee said police charged Abraham with obstruction of police and obstruction of fire fighters.

Chafee said the charges are misdemeanors and Abraham was booked at the Fulton County Jail.

Abraham did not respond to an email message and his agent, Rich Rosa, did not immediately return a message left on his voicemail. A Falcons spokesman also did not return a phone message.

“We are aware of the news regarding John Abraham,” the Falcons said in a statement. “We are in the process of gathering more information and we will have no further comment at this time.”

Chafee said the woman, who did not jump and was uninjured, was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

According to a copy of the police report provided by Chafee, officers moved people away from the scene and put up crime scene tape to restrict onlookers from the area. The police report said Abraham entered the restricted area and was confronted by a firefighter who “repeatedly ordered him to leave the scene.”

Nearby officers then responded and ordered Abraham to leave, according to the police report. The report says Abraham “refused and insisted on continuing [farther] into the scene” at which point police arrested him.

Abraham is the second Falcons player to be arrested in the past week.

Gwinett County police arrested running back Michael Turner early last Tuesday on charges of DUI and speeding. Turner later apologized to the Falcons and the team’s fans for what he called a “bad decision on my part.”

@bigmikeat you have common sense, I thought I was the only one that caught that. The other clmaoring about police state and stupid cops and 45% being bullied or were bullies are just ppl who were made about an arrest or ticket they got in the past and haven’t been able to let it ago. I gurantee you, ABE is not worried about this and he has move on with his life. A person doing their job (i.e. cop) is not wrong and everyone must learn, regardless of your paycheck and how many 0’s come behind a number, no ONE is above the law. Not even Cops. Cops have rules and citizen’s have rules. In this case, the cops acted within the scope of their jobs. Point Blank Period.

Let’s blog about something that will change our lives…STOP PROHIBITION! Smoke em if you got em. Let’s overcrowd the jails with pot smokers and let the violent criminals out! Maybe just maybe people will think about what we are punishing in this country. To say pot is not a drug is stupid…alcohol is not a drug. It has no useful effects on the body and causes more harm to our society than any other drug. Why the stigmatism concerning pot. Was John Abraham high? or was he drinking????? Hum…that’s what I thought. I’m tired of paying for laws that make no sense. Let’s open debate today and solve this before I die. I don’t want to take oxycodone anymore and I hurt to bad to go without anything. Don’t question the pain, question the law!!!

@Tom – be careful with that bong. Too many tokes leads to “profound revelations,” only later to find they’re none to profound. “Survival of the species is everybody’s business.” Legalize pot so I can feel less guilty about smoking wacky weed. Uh huh.

What we have learned from this incident.

Cops are dirt stupid bullies who are unable to even deliver pizzas.
Atlantic Station is a crime ridden war zone where whites will be instantly killed.
There are lots of drugs being used at Atlantic Station since one of the residents there described Kristen Stewart as beautiful.
Peerless Price is a pathetic loser with no life who has unlimited time to post on the ajc.

Regarding the comments from Coach Mike regarding the Abe arrest. The comments sounded exactly like the comments he made of Turner last week. Were the names changed to protect the innocent or what?

Not a big deal, Ok? A man has got a right to his castle. If Abraham stayed on the streets drunk, then cops would’ve been arrested him for public drunkness; you can’t win for losing in this town. Athletes are millionares; cops and firefighters are on salary. You do the math.

Messing with anal retentive cops, bad decision any time. If they didn’t know who he was I’m sure they probably had their hands on their guns the whole time they were talking to him.

I’m with Smitty…this “situation” doesn’t warrant any attention, short of running a couple of extra laps.

This is like every other socialite that people put on high because they make money or have a lot of it. Yea I agree stay away from trouble its easy to do. But at the end these players, preachers, teachers, artistes, models and actors/actresses are human, until they make a conscience decision to stay straight out of the negative image of the public eye then thats it. Just remember regular people make the same dumb mistakes its just not publicized. We have tried and convicted them without knowing all the facts, the old saying there are 3 sides to any story. And people hear the facts and truth and still don’t believe.

As long as he's on the field...
