Atlanta Falcons: Michael Turner was leaving Magic City

Flowery Branch – Falcons running back Michael Turner, who was arrested early Tuesday morning and charged with driving under the influence, apologized and was remorseful for his actions.

Click here for the news story from the police report. Turner was leaving renowned strip club Magic City when was arrested.

(Here’s a story on how the hard economic times have pushed more women to strip clubs.)

It was the second time in five seasons that a player was arrested in Gwinnett County after leaving a post-game celebration. Lawyer Milloy was arrested in a similar case in September of 2008.

“I’d like to apologize to Mr. Blank, Thomas Dimitroff, Mike Smith and the whole Falcons organization and the fans out there for the situation that I’m in right now,” Turner said. “It was a bad decision on my part.

I can’t say too much about it in detail right now. I’m just trying to move forward from here.”

The violation will lead to Turner entering the league’s substance abuse program as a first-time offender. If Turner doesn’t have any additional problems, he could eventually be dismissed from the program. If he has another alcohol related arrest, he could be suspended and face a fine from the league.

San Francisco linebacker Clark Haggans was suspended for three games for a 2011 DUI arrest after he pleaded guilty. He could have been suspended for up to six games.

Turner is expected to stay in the lineup while his case moves through the legal system.

“Nobody has told me that I’m not playing so, I’m just going to prepare like I am [playing,]” Turner said.

Turner is not sure why he didn’t call a driver or limo service to take him home. The league and team provide that service to players.

“Any time that you’re in a situation like this you don’t want this to happen,” Turner said. “You try to keep a clean slate throughout your whole life like everyone else. Unfortunately, this happened and I just have to move forward.”

Turner spoke with his father and then Falcons coach Mike Smith after the arrest.

“Disappointment,” Turner said was the tone of those talks. “I don’t think that anybody is more disappointed than myself. I just have to man up, talk to everybody and face it.

“I’m just taking it day by day. I’m around the guys right now and they are keeping me encouraged and telling me to keep my head up and take it day by day.”

He realizes that he made a mistake.

“It’s a tough situation,” Turner said. “You don’t want to disappoint anybody, family or friends, co-workers or anybody. It’s always tough.”

Turner doesn’t believe his has a drinking problem.

“I shouldn’t have been in this situation to begin with,” Turner said. “It’s tough.”

Turner rushed for 42 yards on 17 carries against Denver. He contends his play and the arrest were not related.

“I never really thought about it like that,” Turner said.

Just learn to HIT A HOLE and get more than -1 yards per carry… How do you get drunk after a hard fought late night game on a MONDAY… Game was over at 1am… Dude was pulled over drunk and speeding at 4am… WTH?! I just hope he doesn’t cost us the season with his lack of production. Hopefully we’ll upgrade next season…

Give the man a break, who doesn’t drink? He just got caught driving that’s all. Learn from it, move on. No big deal. He’s a grown man, let him move forward. It’s being blown out of proportion.

The thing is the NFL player have a 24 hour phone number to NFL security for a FREE ride home if they are to drunk to drive. No excuse.

Stop badgering the guy.
Turner’s been a model Falcon for 5 years.
No off field issues whatsoever.
If he were playing better, all would be forgotten/forgiven.

Boo hoooo. He is sorry for getting caught, not because of his decisions. I would have liked to hear him say he would do anything it takes to right the ship and admit that a person who drinks and drives has a problem. I am sure he does not want admit too much because of legal ramnifications, but he will earn some respect by getting into counseling.

You guys shouldn’t be picking on MT….afterall, look at the past years when he toted the load all game long for the Falcons…………….the man is getting worn down from all the punishment from all the carries like he had last year…………it is time one of these other running backs to get out there and show what they got to offer…………….

Yeah Michael M….I think the punishment has taken its toll thats all. For some reason our line are no longer the good run blockers they used to be…but there does need to be more balance. As good as the passing game is right now…we cannot become one dimensional or it’ll be a long year…

The only time he’s gonna “turn it around” is when we play a SORRY team, and then he’ll produce. The Falcons need him to produce every Sunday, no matter who they play. Franchise backs will get their yards and keeps drives going and move the chains for their team. He just needs to be gone. We already have no less than 3 running backs who can already give us exactly what we’re getting from Turner. Hell, give me the ball 5 times and I’ll gain 0, -1,0, 2 and 0 yards. And then it’s drinks for everybody!!!!!

I’m not knocking him at all for the DUI or Speeding though he could’ve killed someone including himself… I know it was a mistake, I’m just thinking is THIS the reason why he’s been ineffective the past couple years? I know he’s worn down from playing the game, but dude his HORRID when trying to get ONE FLIPPIN’ YARD on 3rd and short or goal line situations… It may be the OL but some of the blame MUST fall on Turner…

I hope he is not an addict and rises from this mistake, but he should’ve gotten a driver to take him home, plus, he JUST finished playing, obviously not hard enough since he went out and partied after a very hard fought game… I don’t know… We need an upgrade at RB anyway… After this year, he’s going to have to retire…

Yeah, he’s been a “good citizen” up until this and I think he’s still a good guy, but we all know, he’s done this before, just never got caught. Probably just bribed the officer or promised him good seats at the game in the past… LOL!

Unlike most, I believe in “Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone” so I’m not going to pass judgment. I will say this, though: learn from your mistakes, Michael Turner, and don’t make them again. We all make mistakes and some don’t need to be made (i.e. driving drunk) in the first place but what’s done is done and now what’s most important is what you say and do afterwards. So far, you have said the right things. Now you need to actually walk the talk. In the meantime, say a prayer and thank your God and lucky stars that you didn’t crash or have an accident potentially hurting someone else. And then, open up your playbook and get your mind right as its back to football and you need to show San Diego what they have been missing since they let you walk!

LET’S GO FALCONS!

Michael Turner has been a reliable player who’s helped this Falcon team win a lot of games over the last few years. This guy signed a big contract 4 years ago and has EARNED HIS MONEY. He has been a bruising and very effective running back. Remember that play last year when he picked up Weems and threw him off the pile while still racking up an extra three or four yards? Turner averaged around 4.5 yards per carry last season!
So now he’s made a big mistake, but let’s put it in perspective. Let’s hope the man learns from his mistake. And then helps carry the Falcons to a Superbowl victory!!!!

If the Falcons had any decency they would keep him off the field this week just to make a statement that they don’t condone this type of behavior. Of course we all know how important a football game is so that is why he isn’t going to miss a game. What if he got in an accident and injured someone or worse killed someone? Would any of you say this is no big deal, he drank and got caught. What a moronic thing for anyone to say. How many different ways can you spell stupid? Driving 95 at 4 am, by itself, is stupid, on an Interstate with TV cameras every mile. But most of all, Michael shows why the Falcons won’t win. He doesn’t give a damn, when you come right down to it. Nope, no sacrifices for him during the regular season. Get layed, get high, get drunk, screw off, whatever. Can’t keep is mind on the game. For every time a drunk gets caught, there’s dozens when he wasn’t caught. He’d rather jerk off than play football. And the Falcons will keep him, and go right down the tubes. When the chips are down, Michael wont come through.

Atlanta has had at least three drunk wrong way drivers kill people on Interstates in the last couple of months. Many others have died from drunks less spectacularly. What race were they? But prejudiced clowns THINK that because a star Atlanta Falcon gets arrested for a DUI, and he happens to be black, the topic is REALLY about race. Some whiners use EVERY excuse that spread hate and avoid the consequences of their own arrogance and prejudices. Time for such clowns to be ridiculed as fools. FYI… that pic is clearly taken at Tattletales not Magic City. Was it really necessary to publish a photo of these girls who have absolutely NOTHING to do with this story other than that they entertain at an adult establishment? Why not include the “gentleman” who is tipping her in the photo? How irresponsible AJC.

If I was there would you have set it out!? All reality who of us have not drink and drive? Thank goodness we have not hurt anyone or he did not hurt anyone…….Turner get it together! Its over but the next time you don’t take a fan with you and you set it out then we will bash you!

MT made a serious mistake and will pay for it. That being said, I’m not sure the highly negative “fans” were watching the same game I was. I saw little in the line of open holes for MT or any other running back. I saw the strength that MT has driving the pile forward for positive yards when most backs would have folded in the backfield. I was happy to see them test the running game on Monday night. It has a ways to go but they have the smarts and the personnel to do it. MT is a key ingredient in a tremendous running game. I don’t know if anyone noticed a whole bunch of people like Elvis Dumerville and Von Miller over on the Denver side of the ball. I give them a LOT of credit for MT being limited in yards. They are professionals too and get paid a lot to stuff guys like MT. On Monday night they won that battle (but not the game) … not sure if that will happen too many times. MT and this O-Line are just too good. GO MT! GO FALCONS!

Stop acting like Turner was a victim…he was drunk and got caught, it happens but in my opinion it shouldn’t during the season but he can live his life like he wants, just be accountable. He’s a grown man, he’s aware of the consequences if he gets caught. Y’all act like he being crucified, it happens all the time, just be prepared to be heckled lol dude leaving Magic City like he just got 200 yards and 3 tds. He’ll be alright.

I also agree with Kathy and Oedipus…How many people have died tragically because of drunk drivers in the last couple of months? The cops really saved his life, freak accidents happen everyday even when drivers are sober…and when you’re impaired in the slightest it’s even more likely something could happen.

I’m sure most athletes who are paid well go home after having a bad game, lock the doors, turn on their computers, read the entirely reasonable comments from every blog and messageboard commenter, cry a little, and then, through tear-blurred eyes, make a solemn vow to do better next time.

Or maybe they have realize that they have cash, go out and have a few drinks, enjoy the pseudo-company of some paid ladies, and proceed to do the same kind of stupid stuff that so many out in the real world do.

I can’t believe how many people can’t figure out why someone who has been drinking doesn’t call for a limo. Alcohol impairs judgment and you don’t necessarily do what is smart or what you would do if you were thinking clearly. Not making excuses for him but it is too bad no one around him or at the club itself could’ve taken his keys away. Hard to imagine he was not with “friends” who let him drive drunk. Most of us have done dumb things and lived to tell about it. Michael will learn from this. I appreciate what he has done for the Falcons in the past and am not ready to throw him under the bus for this. Go Michael, go Falcons!

The offensive line is offensivive in run blocking. This tandem isn’t opening holes for their backs the problem isn’t Turner. There is a silver lining to a limited running game though, Green Bay passed it’s way to winning a superbowl. The blueprint has been established, you can win with the big one with a awesome passing attack. Go Birds

All right defenders, the league provides a service to take players home. Although it’s not like he couldn’t afford a cab to Alaska and back if he needed one. There’s no defense for him driving home in this situation. And a DUI is pretty damn serious. He could’ve hurt and/or killed people. And just because he was lucky enough that that didn’t happen doesn’t mean you dismiss the serious potential effects it could’ve had. And for the record, I’ve never had a DUI.

And since he’ll likely get a slap on the wrist compared to Joe Blow who gets caught DUI, I really don’t have a problem with the media and the public giving him a little crap about it. Especially since I doubt he’ll read or hear most of it.

My bigger question is when will athletes realize that strip clubs are a great place for them to get in trouble.

To all of the sanctimonious d-bags on this blog who are condemning Michael Turner – shame on you! The man has been a model citizen since coming to Atlanta, has been more than a serviceable player, has been humble when he has played great, has never whined or made excuses when he didn’t, and has otherwise done the Falcons and this city proud. Yet unlike the judgmental creeps on this blog who have never made a mistake in their desperate little lives and want to run the man out of town on a rail, he messed up and admitted he did so. He will face the appropriate legal and professional consequences and move on with his life. If you want to rag on him because he looks like he has lost a step and doesn’t hit the hole as quickly, fine. But otherwise, move out of the glass house, exercise a little Christian charity and get over yourselves. Yeesh, I bet y’all are a ton of fun to hang out with – or not.

And people wonder why college sports is catching up in ratings and popularity to the NFL an NBA. Other sports are guilty but these two, mostly, allow felons and drug addicts to make millions. In just about any other mid to upper class job, you would lose your job and be hard pressed to find another with some of the things professional athletes get away with. I don’t mean Turner should get kicked out of the league but the punishment should match the crime. If you get a DUI you should get suspended without pay until you get your license back. Harsher punishments would stop a lot of this crap but the players unions would never allow it and this is going to be the down fall of the 4 major sports.

Turner seems like a nice guy who made a big mistake. We have all been there before. He may not be a PR genius but has expressed remorse for his actions. Also, one does not have to have a drinking problem to overdo it at Magic City on any occasion. Had he used a friend, cab, or limo service, like other players who overdo it, then this would not have happened. I am glad the players are encouraging him because some of the comments here are disgusting and judgmental. All the best to you Michael. Learn from this and come back better and smarter. It’s called life.

Yea, it’s easy for the public to pile it on the guy for his mistake. Nobody was hurt, he has been humiliated and will have to accept the consequences at come along with this. That’s enough for me, I’m certainly not going to pile it on the guy for this. I will however comment on DOL’s affinity for Magic City and strippers in general. Linking an article about more women stripping is a bit strange, but posting a Magic City picture where the strippers are named?? Did that come from the DOL iPhone files?? To those sticking up for this guy – Quit writing this off as “just” a mistake. There were several horrible choices he made. 1) The guy could easily have managed a ride home via the NFL service or by his own means. 2) He was driving drunk. 3) As if 1 & 2 weren’t stupid enough, he compounded his stupidity by travelling at a rate of 97 MPH! The so-called “haters” are the ones who realize this could easily have been a real tragedy. “The Burner” should feel extremely fortunate it wasn’t.
