Falcons coach Mike Smith on Michael Turner’s arrest

FALCONS COACH MIKE SMITH ON TURNER’S ARREST

“First and foremost, anytime a player sheds negatively on our football team and our organization, we’re very disappointed. This is a legal matter that is very well defined on how we have to proceed through the league. We’ll let this process run its course. I want to emphasize that I’ve spoken with Michael we’ve had a conversation and like all conversations with my players, we like to keep those internally.

“He knows that we are disappointed in the decisions that we made after the ball game last night.”

ON IF TURNER WAS DISAPPOINTED WITH HIS PLAY AND IF THAT LED TO HIS ARREST: You can’t speculate on that. Again, anytime a player sheds a negative light on our football team and our organization, we are disappointed. I can’t say any more than that.

There are certain parameters that are set in place by the collective bargaining agreement which is between the NFL and NFLPA. Those guidelines will be followed in terms of what we can and can not do. If there is going to be any internal discipline, that discipline will stay internally. That will be the conversations that we have Michael and the conversations that we already had this morning.

WHAT ARE THE INTERNAL OPTIONS: I don’t want to discuss the internal options that we have. Again, it’s collectively bargained between the NFL and the NFLPA. This is a legal matter and it has to run its course and it will. I don’t think that it’s appropriate for me to talk anymore about it.

FALCONS RELEASE STATEMENT ABOUT RB MICHAEL TURNER

I think the police need to check their facts. Are they sure Michael Turner was speeding? I find that highly unlikely. Are they sure he wasn’t driving 40 in a 55 zone?

It is time for Turner to go. Two reasons, lack of respect for team and lack of effort on field.

Really disappointed in MT. He is old enough to know better. It’s funny that rich celebrities just HAVE to speed around in their sports cars after drinking at the bar — they could easily afford a limo service. He has hurt the team too, but I didn’t think he had a great game.

As great of a win last night was, & as mature as we seemed at times in our win, this is a sign that this team still has some growing up to do, & in reality that it doesn’t quite see itself of an elite level yet! All of which I think will change after this year, but this is a huge sign of immaturity & hopefully one the team deals with & moves on because guess what, we all playing one of the other 5 2-0 teams in the NFL on Sunday all the way on the other side of the country & we need all of our focus, because the true sign of a great team is being able to bounce back from an emotion filled game, to follow it up with another quality game & win!!! So Sunday is a test that I’m really interested in seeing if our boys are up to. Because talent wise we should beat the Chargers & its a shame that Turner had to go & act stupid right before returning to S.D. all the media will be on him because of this dump decision! I hope that in the midst of this occurrence, the vets can rally the locker room & use this as a way to focus the players & that the coaches can use it to refocus the team on football & how hard it is to come back from a really emotional game, especially on the road, & even more so when the games across the country. Even though traditionally Smith has had us ready to go for west coast games, they have never come directly after a win of this magnitude! I hope we’re ready to play on Sunday! We’d be just fine without Turner, I’m more worried about our mental state & focus for a game across the country on a short week of preparation. Hopefully the offense takes yesterday’s lackluster performance as motivation for Sunday!

Very disappointed in Turner. We really have no idea at this point if he had alchohol in his system and if so, how much. But the fact remains that he was clocked at almost 100 MPG at 5:00 AM. I am sure he is talking with his attorney now and the charge will probably be reduced to reckless driving if Turner did not submit to a BAT. None the less, the officer found sufficient probable cause to make an arrest. I am thankful that Turner did not kill himself or innocent people trying to go to work this morning.

Shocker of the year huh ? ……………………This is the reason Michael hasn’t had the ability to run the football as he did in earlier years with the Falcons……………………there is an old saying,.. ” A man takes a drink, the drink takes a drink, the drink takes the man “,……………………….

I have no clue what the Falcons Brass will do with this developing situation, it surely doesn’t help the football team. I know Michael needs to get some help and leave that stuff alone. No reason whatsoever for him to be needing to do this and him being someone kids look up to as well as an athlete on the football field………………..

Some of you can make your retarded remarks if you wish but this is a serious problem and I hope everything works out for Michael and he can continue to play football for several more years.

MT must have some compromising pictures of Blank, Dimitroff, and Mike Smith for us to keep playing him. It is very obvious that he does not play hard. I know our line is suspect (G. Reynolds was horrible last night), but at least MT can run hard. Snelling got one carry last night and it was obvious how hard he hit the hole. I really don’t care who runs the ball, but MT is not the man anymore. Maybe this DUI will help the brass to go ahead and make the move. BTW not to pick solely on Reynolds, pretty much the whole OL stunk it up (as far as the run game goes). And Denver was playing a two shell look which means they whipped our OL with fewer people.

He made a mistake. He drank too much and drove just like so many others are guilty of in the wee hours of the morning. The big difference here is that most inebriated drivers don’t travel at 97 mph, but then again most don’t drive an Audi R8 either. I say let the legal system do their thing and hopefully this will not impact his status with the team.

All you holier than thou phonies should have to play blocking dummyfor the wee at Flowery Branch. Turner had three good reasons for having a few drinks. First, he ran into a wall all night and with the exception of one fifteen yard run looked like a “has-been”. So he was miserable and drank to drown his performance. Second, his team just won on the big Monday Night Stage and he was celebrating and he had one or more too many–dumb choice. Third, after the game hewas still wired so he had a few to relax–not a good choice without a designated driver. Whatever the reason all three possibilities indicate he’s human and not perfect. Hey, he didn’t blow up the embassy in Lybia, but he could have killd someone out there on the highway. He’s going to pay for it in more than just a fine–hopfully a lesson learned.

So sad that when all the headlines should be about the team’s big win that it has been overshadowed by one self individual’s bad conduct. @bail bondsman, the Falcons don’t need to grow up, Michael Turner does; @old qb, so if there were so many excuses for getting drunk and driving how the rest of the team manage to avoid that temptation. I am not convinced that Turner was drunk just because some Gwinnet Cop said he was, but I do believe he was clocked at 97 MPH. What an idiot. I hope he had a good reason for being out at 5:00 AM, but I have my doubts. This makes the second time this year Turner has made the headlines in a negative light for conduct away from the field. I doubt he is going to get much sympathy from the upper brass. Blank doesn’t like the negative press.

Yup, MT went and screwed the pooch, no doubt. But… if we can look the other way for players that abuse their spouses and rehire players after serving time in the federal pen… and allow arbitration panels to set aside league rulings on players that accepted money to cause purposeful injury to others… then Turner’s little incident is nothing.

No, I am in no way defending what he did… just saying that there shouldn’t be a double standard. If we are going to be a moronic culture, lets dive in head first.

Turner is still a good football player. I am stunned about this incident because I don’t know if I’ve every heard of Turner doing something like this? He may be feel depressed about his productivity but he came through when Atlanta needed him and I would like the see the fans support him.

He must understand his role is different and play within this and this doesn’t diminished his value to the team and 99.9% of his teammates and fans are thrilled to have him still with the team!

I think a trade is eminent IMHO, because of M. Turner’s decline in production along with the baby mama drama in public view. How long will Arthur Blank put up with his smelly mess? Not long. He’s just a shell of himself-a washed out loser-who has to come home to his baby mama and has a restraining order on the other. The man’s got personal problems that can put a strain on his coach and other teamates. Untimately, this dude is not leading a happy life, and uses (alcohol or maybe other substances) as an escape for his perceived problems-which include child support, baby momma’s, etc. Time to pack it up broham.

Lol @ the ne’er-do-well’s in here bashing Turner for his personal life issues. Every person in here who is quick to criticize Turner for making a poor decision has probably made poor decisions in their lives as well. The only difference is you are can do so in total obscurity because nobody outside your home knows who the heck you are or even cares what your personal issues may be. LOL. Michael Turner made a poor decision to drink and operate a vehicle, clearly. Clearly, we as fans should be disappointed in his poor decision as it pertains to any affect the decision may have on the team but to act as if no one has ever been disappointed in you and your poor decision making skills is quite disingenuous. I’m pretty sure some of you don’t even randomly come in here to comment about football. You smelled a little blood in the water today and decided to do what you do best and that is to bash, whine and complain about someone else’s personal life because yours is less than desirable. Obviously, it was stupid and dangerous for turner to drive drunk and speed. That being said I think much of the commentary that he is garbage and worthless is excessive. He was solid for us for a number of years. The shelf life on a RB is about 4 years. There were games in past years where he carried us. No question he has lost a step. he cant pick up yards by bulldozing anymore (although he did pick up a huge first down for us at the end of the game) Lets not get carried away. The law and probably the NFL will punish him for the DUI. His career is definitely in the latter years and effectiveness fading. He gave us some good years when we did not have to worry about RB. Lets appreciate that. We will need to find some young legs going forward.

Long before this incident occurred, I had called for the release/trade of Michael Turner. And the reason for it was his ON FIELD performance or lack there of! When he first came to Atlanta he ran hard then shortly after that he quit running. He attempts to run as if he is a scat back when he is a power back! He doesn’t run hard like many of the other premier backs in the league. He consistently tip toe for yards, hence the nickname “Tippy Toe” Turner! Our running game has been suffering a lot and the coaches need to address this issue sooner than later! As for as the alleged DUI, I’ll let it play out in court, but it he felt the need to immediately consume enough alcohol to get a DUI immediately after he got off of work, there might be a problem! If he would run as fast as he drives he would be a great back! I would like to hear what others think!

I offer a big thank you to “Sir Real”. I knew I’d take heat from most of the negative ones that have a very big mouth, are quick to judge, and wouldn’t know which way to put on a jock, never mind a football uniform in the NFL.
Turner acted the fool, a roll I know I’ve performed brilliantly in on occasion as someone that made the wrong decisions when I knew better. But that’s all part of life and growing. I’m very glad Turner hurt no one but himself in the eyes of his teammates, the organization, and his family. It could have been so much worse.
The Clowns jumping on him right now forget Denver has one of the single best defenses in the NFL. Turner deserves to suffer the guiilt and the punishment, but these dingalings seem to forget a major reason the Falcons have had consecutive winning seasons in large part are directly due to Mike Turner and if there are true Falcon fans out there now he deserves better than self-described experts that don’t understand the pressures of playing at the NFL level. I make no excuses for him and I’m thankful no one got hurt physically. But you clowns that have no idea should shut up and that includes you “Open Your Eyes”.

He should’ve been cut in the off season!!! Runs to long in the same spot and has NO explosiveness hitting the line. Snelling or Rogers should be the feature backs. Turner had that one good year in 2008 and after he got his first injury in 2009, he has never been the same.

Yes, he has had 1,000+ rushing every year except 2009 (injury year), but he is too damn slow now. Even the sports talk shows were saying today that the holes were there for him to run in but he just tip toes, or what I call, “Duckett Danced” to the line and just leans forward.

In the NFL, you have GOT to have a SPEED back to hit that line and just rip through it! Granted, the NFL has turned into a passing league now, but you have to have a run game to balance the offense. Plus, if you look at most of the RB’s in the league, there not the big bruising backs of the past. They are leaner, faster and more agile. The philosophy now is pretty much out run everyone instead of running over them.

I have to concur. I see everybody mentioning Rodgers and Snelling and I don’t see them as the tandem to take us to the promised land. Actually Snelling looked a little slow to me last night too.Turner has just not been himself and it may be that the real problem is being made public with his arrest. We will not win the Superbowl with Turner as our primary ball carrier. And we know Turner won’t be back next year………..you would think he would want to showcase himself a little more for free agency………??

Am I the only one worried about the usual Monday Night Football hangover? Sorry, but I think that is really what it is called when the team wins on Monday and play the following Sunday — in this case after a dry air flight to San Diego?

Singletary – Yeah… thinking the same thing. A big win, a short week, jet lag to the west coast and the bumps have 24 hours less to heal. On top of that, Turner’s little blaze of glory and you’ve got the recipe for a let down.

WT??? Man we got some whiny negative spineless fans! One silly so-called fan actually wrote one time that he or she did not want the Falcons to win the Super Bowl because then what would they have to shoot for the next season. If we can win games against good football teams with Michael Turner then we can win a Super Bowl with him. I mean really what are you even basing your weak logic on? Several teams have won Super Bowls with RB’s not even close to the caliber of Turner. We have finally have an OC that can game plan and adjust his scheme to fit the opponent. The game plan last night was clearly to run the ball to eat up clock and keep Peyton on the sideline as much as possible. Turner had a tough time last night for sure. I was there, did anybody notice the defenders ability to put hands on Turner right as he got to the line of scrimmage? Has he lost some explosion? Yes, but we can obviously still win games. Calm down ladies everything will be fine. Every pass thrown won’t be caught and every run won’t go for 50 yards. It’s football. You win by being better than the opponent, not by being perfect.

Falcons wont have jet lag..they always get to the west coast early so the bodies can adjust to the 3 hour time change………………….the short week is only shorter by a few hours………………………………………….the beat up bodies or so called injuries…………..now that could be another story………………………….

lol, somebody says he looked as slow as a turtle, he’s gone from Turner the Burner to Turner the Turtle, he’s looked horrible lately, and has never, ever, ever, played well in a big game for the Falcons, his only value left is that teams still game plan for him and our play action is quite potent, reminds me of when teams would intentionally walk Chipper even when he was having a horrible year at the plate

OK all of yu jujubees.

This is the Burner here. Yeh so what, I got drunk and got a speeding ticket. I had run for 42 yds after a steller 30 yds last week. Who of you would not tie one on after that.

My car go fast too. I never would have gotten caught but I was in the process of eating two big macs and some frys I got at McDonalds. I think I might have swerved some when I was putting ketchup on the frys.

The cop was a sacker. I told him who I was and I could drive well enough to get home. He wanted me to blow into a tube and I told him to blow off I wasnt doing it. He got sassy with me and I think I might have brushed againt him with one of my 42″ thighs.

Anyway jail was ok. I got to eat as they were just serving breakfast. That food is not good in there.

Got out and went to the waffle house and chowed down hard .

damn I am hungry.

Someone said I got the tippy toes when running thru the line. I dare anyone to say that to my face. I ran hard but it wasnt a good effort.
My legs hurt. I got a hit to my chin and I may need some rehab. They got good food in the rehab. You sit in a tub of ice water and eat kringles.

Well The Burner will be back. Next week I will break the 50 yd marker, I promise. And if I dont , I am still getting paid. So you losers and posers eat my dust.

During last night’s game, I easily noticed Turner was not giving 100%. Falcons need a good running back who is explosive and will block when not carrying the ball. Turner’s actions concerning his arrest for drunkeness should result in his dismissal. He embarassed all of us who are Falcon supporters.

Give the ball to Snelling, he’s ready coach. This explains why Turner is going down so easy. He has a problem making over 5m out 5 am speeding, don’t add up to nothing. We need to let him rest and get things together, maybe get some counseling.

I have been wondering why they keep running him , It is obvious he has lost his desire. He runs to the pile and goes down without much effort, nothing like the way he use to run. I believe he has some personal issues. This is his second negative headline this season,,,FALCON Management sit him on the bench and try to trade him.

While I’m not a fan of Turner’s style or run production, I didn’t see Snelling or Quizz establish a run game either. Smitty keeps banging them in there but not much happens, not like a couple of years ago. I’m not sure why, but could it be the OL run-blocking. They are great on pass block!

Gimme (the Falcons and fans) a break! All ESPN and the other nationwide sports outlets wanted to talk about Tuesday was how baaaaaaad Payton Manning and the officiating was. The Falcons got little press and little credit. Now the local outlets are talking about Turner. The win versus the Broncos was huge yet the team gets practically no credit because of Manning, officiating and now, Michael Turner.
I am thankful MT or no one else was injured and he DEFINITELY needs to sit awhile. And since the Falcons have been having some trouble running the ball–which they WILL HAVE TO DO (if) when they make their playoffs–maybe the offensive line will have to spend more time concentrating on run blocking, which will help the team in the long run. While MT is still a good NFL back if you watch the film of the last two years, since his ankle injury, you can easily see that he doesn’t hit the line-of-scrimmage with the same intensity and speed he did before. I believe we can now safely assume that the Falcons will be picking an RB in the first or second round in 2013 draft–unless they go after another established NFL back through trade or free agency during the off season.

I loved what Turner did for us over the seasons here. But I think it is time to play Antone Smith and see what happens. If he can play like he did in preseason, he needs to be on the field, because he won’t stay a backup after this year if he can keep playing like he did for us in August. Play him now or watch him start somewhere else next year.

What a player can do now is more important to a team than what he did in the past. This years MT is not the MT of old. Management must base its decisions on now and the future, with a cautious eye on the past.

This probably is the” straw that breaks the camels back” as far as MT remaining a Falcon. I am sorry that it has to end this way but it is time to move beyond MT and let the young guys run the ball. He contributed a great .deal and was a terrific RB in his prime. That time has passed. I hope he has invested his money well and will have a successful after football career

Jacquizz Rogers could not play at Georgia or Tech. How is he getting minutes with Antone Smith on the roster? Talk about an indictment of this organization’s player assessment IQ. That he can “hide” behind the lineman is not the point … the point is to move the ball downfield. When they do “find” him he has gone very far. A huff and puff and he’s off his feet.
