Falcons coach Mike Smith on Michael Turner’s arrest

FALCONS COACH MIKE SMITH ON TURNER’S ARREST

“First and foremost, anytime a player sheds negatively on our football team and our organization, we’re very disappointed. This is a legal matter that is very well defined on how we have to proceed through the league. We’ll let this process run its course. I want to emphasize that I’ve spoken with Michael we’ve had a conversation and like all conversations with my players, we like to keep those internally.

“He knows that we are disappointed in the decisions that we made after the ball game last night.”

ON IF TURNER WAS DISAPPOINTED WITH HIS PLAY AND IF THAT LED TO HIS ARREST: You can’t speculate on that. Again, anytime a player sheds a negative light on our football team and our organization, we are disappointed. I can’t say any more than that.

There are certain parameters that are set in place by the collective bargaining agreement which is between the NFL and NFLPA. Those guidelines will be followed in terms of what we can and can not do. If there is going to be any internal discipline, that discipline will stay internally. That will be the conversations that we have Michael and the conversations that we already had this morning.

WHAT ARE THE INTERNAL OPTIONS: I don’t want to discuss the internal options that we have. Again, it’s collectively bargained between the NFL and the NFLPA. This is a legal matter and it has to run its course and it will. I don’t think that it’s appropriate for me to talk anymore about it.

FALCONS RELEASE STATEMENT ABOUT RB MICHAEL TURNER

I think the police need to check their facts. Are they sure Michael Turner was speeding? I find that highly unlikely. Are they sure he wasn’t driving 40 in a 55 zone?

It is time for Turner to go. Two reasons, lack of respect for team and lack of effort on field.

Really disappointed in MT. He is old enough to know better. It’s funny that rich celebrities just HAVE to speed around in their sports cars after drinking at the bar — they could easily afford a limo service. He has hurt the team too, but I didn’t think he had a great game.

As great of a win last night was, & as mature as we seemed at times in our win, this is a sign that this team still has some growing up to do, & in reality that it doesn’t quite see itself of an elite level yet! All of which I think will change after this year, but this is a huge sign of immaturity & hopefully one the team deals with & moves on because guess what, we all playing one of the other 5 2-0 teams in the NFL on Sunday all the way on the other side of the country & we need all of our focus, because the true sign of a great team is being able to bounce back from an emotion filled game, to follow it up with another quality game & win!!! So Sunday is a test that I’m really interested in seeing if our boys are up to. Because talent wise we should beat the Chargers & its a shame that Turner had to go & act stupid right before returning to S.D. all the media will be on him because of this dump decision! I hope that in the midst of this occurrence, the vets can rally the locker room & use this as a way to focus the players & that the coaches can use it to refocus the team on football & how hard it is to come back from a really emotional game, especially on the road, & even more so when the games across the country. Even though traditionally Smith has had us ready to go for west coast games, they have never come directly after a win of this magnitude! I hope we’re ready to play on Sunday! We’d be just fine without Turner, I’m more worried about our mental state & focus for a game across the country on a short week of preparation. Hopefully the offense takes yesterday’s lackluster performance as motivation for Sunday!

Very disappointed in Turner. We really have no idea at this point if he had alchohol in his system and if so, how much. But the fact remains that he was clocked at almost 100 MPG at 5:00 AM. I am sure he is talking with his attorney now and the charge will probably be reduced to reckless driving if Turner did not submit to a BAT. None the less, the officer found sufficient probable cause to make an arrest. I am thankful that Turner did not kill himself or innocent people trying to go to work this morning.

It was easy for law enforcement to apprehend Turner, who wasn’t moving very fast carrying the bottle. Patrol units easily contained the running back as he slipped behind the wheel and fumbled his keys.

Shocker of the year huh ? ……………………This is the reason Michael hasn’t had the ability to run the football as he did in earlier years with the Falcons……………………there is an old saying,.. ” A man takes a drink, the drink takes a drink, the drink takes the man “,……………………….

I have no clue what the Falcons Brass will do with this developing situation, it surely doesn’t help the football team. I know Michael needs to get some help and leave that stuff alone. No reason whatsoever for him to be needing to do this and him being someone kids look up to as well as an athlete on the football field………………..

Some of you can make your retarded remarks if you wish but this is a serious problem and I hope everything works out for Michael and he can continue to play football for several more years.

MT must have some compromising pictures of Blank, Dimitroff, and Mike Smith for us to keep playing him. It is very obvious that he does not play hard. I know our line is suspect (G. Reynolds was horrible last night), but at least MT can run hard. Snelling got one carry last night and it was obvious how hard he hit the hole. I really don’t care who runs the ball, but MT is not the man anymore. Maybe this DUI will help the brass to go ahead and make the move. BTW not to pick solely on Reynolds, pretty much the whole OL stunk it up (as far as the run game goes). And Denver was playing a two shell look which means they whipped our OL with fewer people.

He made a mistake. He drank too much and drove just like so many others are guilty of in the wee hours of the morning. The big difference here is that most inebriated drivers don’t travel at 97 mph, but then again most don’t drive an Audi R8 either. I say let the legal system do their thing and hopefully this will not impact his status with the team.

MT no longer hits the hole hard, He hits the pile slides one side falls, He doesn’t keep his legs driving the pile and I think they should let the other backs do their thing!

All you holier than thou phonies should have to play blocking dummyfor the wee at Flowery Branch. Turner had three good reasons for having a few drinks. First, he ran into a wall all night and with the exception of one fifteen yard run looked like a “has-been”. So he was miserable and drank to drown his performance. Second, his team just won on the big Monday Night Stage and he was celebrating and he had one or more too many–dumb choice. Third, after the game hewas still wired so he had a few to relax–not a good choice without a designated driver. Whatever the reason all three possibilities indicate he’s human and not perfect. Hey, he didn’t blow up the embassy in Lybia, but he could have killd someone out there on the highway. He’s going to pay for it in more than just a fine–hopfully a lesson learned.
But you Holy Rollers are jerks. Ye who is without sin cast the first stone.

Nice job Turner. As much money as you make don’t you think you could afford to take a taxi or heck, even a limo? Way to use your head with the team off to a great start so far. Sheesh. I really don’t understand why any of these idiot DUI getting pro athletes that make more money in one year than I’ll probably ever see in my lifetime can’t figure out how to call a cab or limo or something. I’ve been very happy having Turner on the Falcons but what a bonehead move….C’MON MAN!

Turner’s ignorance reflects on himself. But before we drag him down the street, tarred and feathered, we need more fact. He may have been speeding and not impaired for all we know at this point. I see motorcycles going 100 MPH all the time and I don’t necessarily think they are drunk, but I always wonder how stupid they are.

So sad that when all the headlines should be about the team’s big win that it has been overshadowed by one self individual’s bad conduct. @bail bondsman, the Falcons don’t need to grow up, Michael Turner does; @old qb, so if there were so many excuses for getting drunk and driving how the rest of the team manage to avoid that temptation. Place blame where blame is due, and I can cast the first stone because I have never driven 97 miles an hour drunk.

Dumb: Getting drunk and staying out til 5AM after a game.
Dumber: Deciding drive after above stated Dumb move instead of taking a cab
Dumbest: Going nearly 100 mph, making it easy for the cops to pick him out

@Important- Agreed- The first thing I saw this morning when I opened the AJC. com was Turners Mug on the front page. How pathetic? I expected to see a big headline about the Falcon’s Big Win. I am not convinced that Turner was drunk just because some Gwinnet Cop said he was, but I do believe he was clocked at 97 MPH. What an idiot. I hope he had a good reason for being out at 5:00 AM, but I have my doubts. This makes the second time this year Turner has made the headlines in a negative light for conduct away from the field. I doubt he is going to get much sympathy from the upper brass. Blank doesn’t like the negative press.
