September 17, 2012 - Atlanta, Ga.,: Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning (18) shows his frustration with running back Willis McGahee, right, after Manning is sacked by the Atlanta Falcons in the first half of their game in the Georgia Dome Monday night in Atlanta, Ga., September 17, 2012. JASON GETZ / JGETZ@AJC.COM

Is Peyton Manning washed up? Short answer: no.

It sure looked like it early against the Falcons and the nation was able to witness his errant passing on Monday Night Football.

The Falcons used Manning’s mistakes to jump on the Broncos early but were forced to hold on for a 27-21 victory before a raucous crowd of 70,427 at the Georgia Dome.

“We needed everyone in that locker room tonight to get the job done,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “I’m really proud of the performance we turned in tonight, especially on the defensive side of the ball.”

In this battle of no-huddle offenses, one operated by Manning, the master, and the other by Matt Ryan, still the aspiring star, the Falcons prevailed to improve to 2-0. The Broncos dropped to 1-1.

The Falcons’ secondary was ready for Manning and his legendary resume, hand gestures and play calling. Atlanta intercepted three of his passes and caused a fumble by former Georgia standout Knowshon Moreno to halt another drive.

“We felt that if we could rattle him early, we could dictate the flow of the game,” free safety Thomas DeCoud said. “The main focus was to confuse him all game.”

But when Manning’s rally came — he drove the Broncos 45 yards to close to within six points with 3:25 to play — Ryan connected on a critical third-and-5 pass with Julio Jones, achieving a first down with just over minutes left, sealing the deal.

“That is something that we really harp on whenever we are out, whether it’s practice or what have you,” left guard Justin Blalcok said. “We have a four-minute offense where we want to grind the clock out. We were hoping to do it the drive before better than we did. That is something that offensive football teams pride themselves on, being able to go in there and not give the ball back. It was very important not to give those guys another shot.

“We all know the situation there. Yes, when we saw [Jones] getting down the field a little bit everybody had a big sigh of relief.”

Manning opened in a fog. On his first pass of the game, cornerback Dunta Robinson forced the ball out and linebacker Sean Weatherspoon nearly came up with an interception. After a run for a loss of 2 yards on a run by Willis McGahee, strong safety William Moore intercepted Manning’s pass intended for tight end Jacob Tamme and returned it to Denver’s 1-yard line.

It took the Falcons, who struggled with their short yardage runs last season, three plays to get running back Michael Turner into the end zone to make it 7-0.

Manning was making just his second start in his Colorado comeback. The premier quarterback of his day, was out of the league for 20 months after undergoing neck surgeries. He was released by his former team, the Indianapolis Colts, and is trying to resurrect his career in Denver.

Later in the first quarter, he completed a pass to Brandon Stokley before being sacked by Weatherspoon. On his next throw down the field, DeCoud intercepted the pass and returned it 15 yards to Denver’s 33-yard line.

The Falcons drove to the 19, but Julio Jones dropped an apparent touchdown pass in the end zone on third down. Matt Bryant made a 37-yard field goal to put the Falcons up 10-0 with 9:46 left in the first quarter.

On Denver’s third possession, Manning, apparently determined to throw the ball down the field, was intercepted again. This time, backup cornerback Robert McClain, who was in for Asante Samuel, intercepted a pass intended for Stokley and returned it 32 yards to Atlanta’s 47 yard line.

The Falcons couldn’t convert McClain’s interception into any points and were forced to punt.

On Denver’s next drive, Manning didn’t try a throw into the teeth of the Falcons’ nickel defense and the Broncos were forced to punt.

The game took a turn for the bizarre near the end of the first quarter, as the replacement officials struggled to maintain control on a routine fumble and pile-up play.

After linebacker Stephen Nicholas forced Knowshon Moreno to fumble, mayhem broke out after the play. The officials never signaled possession and were slow to clear up the pile. While Denver coach John Fox got in the middle of the action. Samuel got into a pushing match with Denver guard Zane Beadles. Defensive end Ray Edwards traded shots with Denver’s Derek Wolfe and drew a penalty. Denver’s J.D. Walton was seen touching an official.

Smith was kind to the officials.

“That was the longest first quarter that I’ve ever been involved in,” Smith said. “It looked lik we were going to have a four hour game, but it was a very long first quarter. We kept a bunch of people up late.”

When order was finally restored, the Falcons had the ball at their 17-yard line. The drive stalled at Denver’s 24 and Bryant added a 42-yard field goal to make it 13-0.

The defense forced another punt and the Falcons offense put together their first sustained drive of the game operating from the no-huddle.

Ryan masterfully connected with Harry Douglas, White, Tony Gonzalez as they marched down to Denver’s 1. Ryan tossed a touchdowns pass to Gonzalez. Bryant added the extra point to make it 20-0 with 4:33 left in the first half.

Manning and the Broncos finally cobbled together a drive, which was aided by a fourth-and-1 pass interference call on Dominique Franks. He left the game with a head injury, which normally is reported as a concussion.

Nine plays later, Manning tossed a 17-yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas, which was at first ruled incomplete. Denver trailed 20-7 at the intermission and three of the replacement officials’ calls on the field were reversed by replay officials in the booth.

“I’ve been around this league long enough to know that it’s tough to win regardless of who you’re playing,” said Ryan, who completed 24 of 36 passes for 21 yards and two touchdowns. “When you’re playing against a Hall of Fame quarterback it’s even tougher.”

The Falcons just played one of the best if not the best QB in the NFL . I though the defense was amazing they have improved 100% but they also gave out of gas there a little at the end . The offense really needed to score one more time to give the defense a break but it’s a win for the Falcons .They will only get better.

Why don’t the Falcons go ahead and forget the run and use the backs exclusively for blocking and receiving. It’s obvious nobody on the staff knows anything about a running game.

Great effort from both sides of the ball. Let’s keep in mine we have two new coordinators. As the season progresses both sides of the ball will get better. Save injuries, this team could be on to something.

So JSS, seriously-since it appears that you may have been at least a former Falcon fan, are you ready to admit these Falcons may be special and have a chance at the SB? Just like having to fess up that maybe earlier Chipper judgements were premature. What you say? Come on , jump on(back on) the bandwagon;the ride is more fun that way. Despite the proclamation of some, Ryan is starting to look elite. Jaworski et al certainly think so.

Well, glad the Falcons won. Seriously. Glad ESPN didn’t get the fairy tale story ending they wanted last night. Yet, Manning deserves attention. He’s earned it. Game 2 with a new club, 3 picks and still only lost by 7. I’d temper my wild enthusiasm, Atlanta fans. It could be said Atlanta should have won large. Much larger. Early in the game on three rushes, Turner averaged 4 inches per carry. Like I said, glad Atlanta won.

Yep ! The Broncos came with double coverage on Julio Jones, but they forgot about Roddy White, Gonzo, and Harry Douglas. Oh yeah, let me mention the great protection the o line provided for Matty Ice. The only drawback to the whole game was the way we slowed down in the second half and let them start to catch up. It’s called Smitty ball or sitting on a lead. If Smitty is gonna keep doing that we’re gonna lose a couple, ’cause it just don’t work every time which Aaron Rodgers has made pretty clear. GO FALCONS

The quick out pass plays scare me to death. It’s just taking too much chance that a speedburner is gonna undercut the the pass and pick it off for a long gainer or a pic 6 especially when we’re deep in our own territory.

McGahee had more drive, more momentum, carried more tacklers than Turner. And, oh yeah, he’s fast.

We will not continue to win games with two yards and a cloud of dust on running plays. Ryan may have the top passer rating in the league after week 2, and I’m thrilled that we are going with a more aggressive pass-oriented attack, but you cannot win go deep in the playoffs with the kind of run game we have right now.

jo:

Yep, 2nd half offense was timid–except for the TD drive. We threw almost every down, had the Broncos in complete disarray. Otherwise, you are 100% correct.

I’m not sure it’s the play calling–late in a game you want to protect the ball–but when you are getting zero, one, two yards on every running play, it is, by definition, timid when you run it a lot. If we had someone who was quicker and hit holes harder, it would not look quite as timid.

Great win on the big stage. WillyMo is about to become a star in this league. Spoon and Nick were flying around all night. Thought Franks played well also, definitely should be playing over Chris Owens. Solid pass rush, Jerry showing flashes. Offense got a little too conservative in the 4th, but did enough. Roddy White=still an elite receiver! Tony G is playing too well, if we don’t win SB, believe he returns. BTW, how is Spagnuolo’s D looking so far LOL? Turner had a pretty rough game. Made matters worse for himself with the DUI afterwards. Dumba$$! Offensive line played a pretty good game. Great protection on the pass plays. Winning teams like the Patriots don’t ease up or change their game plan because they are ahead by 20, they keep doing what they did to get ahead by 20. Great defensive scheme. Manning was truly confused and obviously may not be 100%. Great win especially not laying an egg on a national audience. I’m still not satisfied with our running attack. Turner plodded as usual and even Snelling looked slow. Makes you wonder how somebody get’s a DUI essentially on the way home from work. Would they be so dumb as to serve alcohol on the team bus?
We won Time of Possession Denver 27:20 Falcons 32:40

Falcons Offense 2nd in points, 21st in Yards, 12th in Passing Yards, 28th in Rushing Yards
Falcons Defense 15th in Points, 17th in Yards, 15th in Passing Yards, 25th in Rushing Yards

2-0 is sweet. 1st place in the NFC South is sweet. But can the above League Game Averages get us to the promised land? San Diego is going to be a tough road game. I hope our guys can carry the momentum forward!!

1. No sustained defense line push or QB pressure.

What team bus? This was a home game…the locker rooms are full of beer and other alcohol. Remember when an underage Rafael Furcal got a DUI on the way home?
Even if it wasnt in the locker room there are plenty of bars between downtown and Suwanee.

Must be nice to have money like that. Look around and tell me if you see anyone else get arrested for DUI at 5am and get released at 7am

Now that Turner will get suspended a game for his DUI, I’m hoping a steady dose of Quizz and Snelling will keep Turner on bench for good. He’s had some good years for us but he needs to pack it in, he is DONE
***************************************
Suspension? I’m not sure this is part of the player conduct policy. The NFL conducts separate investigations for drug and alcohol abuse and performance enhancement.

Great win. The crowd got there on time and was
loud.

What a difference the new OC and DC are making!
Sam Baker had a very good game. Roddy was
outstanding. Ryan has really matured and looks
stronger. Hope the running game gets going.

I have confidence the new OC and DC will
make the necessary adjustments in the upcoming
games as the opposition schemes to stop what
has been successful.

About M. Turner – - agreed with many on this blog that it is his first off-the-field issue, thus let’s put that aside (for now).

I am very concerned about his on-the-field issues rather. My view is that he has to contribute in every play when he is on that field. Particularly, when he is blocking and receiving. I saw 2-3 plays last night that he poorly block (that one when he tried to cut black and was jumped over). Another play was when Matty-Ice ran out of the pocket toward Turner and he looked like he was slow to react. That play, Matty-ice had to slide because Turner did not block. I saw a few examples like that in the game against Kansas too.

I can’t help but comparing to the efforts clearly evidence when J. Rodgers or J. Snelling were in there. They really blocked and with a much better result.

I’m a Falcons fan and also like “Turner the burner” a lot. I hope someone close to him (friends) or someone with authority (coaches) can convince him that he is still a valuable asset to the team and that this team needs him to contributes more effectively. In a tight game, those poor plays could quickly turn a win into a loss in a heart beat.

I hope he realizes that offensive game plan for the Falcons has changed and he must adapt. Otherwise, I guess he will be remembered as a “good running back” instead of a “more complete offensive player”.

I have no information to argue, they very well could have alcohol in the locker room. I know from previous home games though they do take a team bus from Flowery Branch. If they don’t do that anymore then I stand corrected.

GREAT WIN! now there are some areas of concern…..1) 10 points off 3 interceptions is not acceptable. 2) First series of 4th quarter, the off tackle run by snelling was a pitiful call, we have to learn to put teams away when they are on the ropes……3) Turner has some issues to resolve.

Look at Ray Lewis… He is 36, and to improve his game in the offseason he lost 35 lbs… that is dedication…

Ueediot,
What happened with Turner is routine. A lot of cops allow you to call someone to drive your car home. If that’s the case, the person who came to pick him up, likely bailed him out. Recognize, he was booked at 5AM, not stopped at 5AM.

I love how all the detractors miniminize every win we have. Saints fans, stop living in the past. The Raiders have Super Bowl WINS….would anyone trade places with them today? Didn’t think so. This was a great identity win. It showed that we don’t have a defense that is going to lay down. Also, we may have faced one of the best defenses we’ll face all year and we were able to move the ball. That’s important. The only thing left to conquer is Mike Smith’s desire to play conservative.

Congratulations to all our Falcons, both coaches and players for a GREAT win! The Broncos were led by one of the best quarterbacks in history and showed one of the best defenses in the NFL. Running backs don’t do much better than Mr. McGahee did so over all this was an immense challenge for them and in front of a national audience. The Falcons demonstrated excellence across the board. Special thanks to coach Nolan for working out a way to leverage the combined strength of all 11 players on defense to give this explosive offense a headache all night. If this defense continues to progress (which I fully anticipate), they will be hard to stop by the end of 16 games. Matty looked like a young Peyton Manning and is well on his way to stardom. He didn’t let the adversity of dropped passes or busted plays affect his execution. A great win for Atlanta! GO FALCONS!

WOW, the “Rise Up” slogan must be working; particularly for the defense…great defensive play by the Falcons… The 1st three quarters play took me back to 1977 and the forgotten Falcons “Grits Blitz” defense that was the “Best in the World” that season…the problem then we didn’t have an offense to support them; now we do! It was phenomenal to see our defense play as they did for three quarters; could have had a little bit more help from the offense to put the game away early! But overall great effort and play on both sides of the ball; bottom line we got the win and the lead in the NFC South! “RISE UP”!

1) Your defense is absolute garbage. Cam showed yall what it was last night. You lost on the road. So far, we have not. RG3 carved you up in his debut at YOUR HOUSE. You guys lost your home opener. We did not.
2) Your team is in complete disarray. Your defensive coordinator who was supposed to fill on your swiss cheese d?….has not. Your “head” coaching situation is a dysfunctional Trio of Brees, Kromer, and Carmichael. Who said three heads were better than one?lol Koetter on the other hand, can handle the calls by himself. I’m sure you saw the game last night.
3) You have lost TWO games straight. We have not. The Falcons have won TWO games straight. You….have…..not. :)

Turner should get kicked off the team for embarrassing the organization with his “SELFISH” arrest last night. Thank goodness the arrest wasnt BEFORE the game because we needed turner for his one game-saving run at the end that helped to ice the game. Had turner got arrested prior to the game, turner would have been sitting in jail while we were trying to win a football game last night. Turner should be traded immediately because its obvious to me that the falcons are on a superbowl run this year—and we dont want a repeat of 1998 when we had a team that made the superbowl but couldnt win it because of the Eugene Robinson fiasco. Turner is another Eugene Robinson.

I will also remind everyone that there are 14 more games left and the birds need to take it one game at a time. Did Michael Turner get a DUI after the game last night ? Maybe Turner’s DUI incident (arrest) will get him going. Turner had been in a two-year long slump. Last year he averaged about 1 yard per carry and this year his production has been worse. Well lets replace Turners nickname of Michael “the Burner” Turner to Michael “DUI” Turner. Great job for a real “crack head”.

Matt Ryan made some throws in last nights game that were great. Glad he accomplished a milestone on Monday Night Football by throwing his 100th TD pass.

Aints ranked #24 and B4, Choke, JSS, etc., sounding like morons. Priceless.

BTW – that super bowl you “won” came by cheating, so it will always have an asterisk,
* = win debatable due to bounty scandal

We need a middle linebacker to stop the run. Dent has one assist in two games. What a waste position. What would the defense look like with a true linebacker.

Ryan did a great job with the no huddle. The OC did a great job of running left all night until the final first down when he ran right. Game over.

A win is a win but…We have No running game at all!! Why keep trying to give the ball to turner, 5 yards deep in the backfield? Why not a dink pass over the line of scrimage & let him or another R.B. see what they can do?? We know our offensive line can’t open a hole and I’m sick of Turner or whom ever run up the back of their own player! The Defense won their battles and probably the game..for 21/2 or 3 quarters..then we got tired! M.Ryan still looks like a “deer in headlights”..Play book never looked downfield after the 27 point lead..Its like we were trying to PROTECT the lead rather than going for blood..It almost cost us the game! I loved the way the subs stood up & accounted for themselves..We still dont have a clue against the run. ARTHUR BLANK..stay your a## in the owners box untill the game is over!!!!!

We won, time to turn the guns towards the Chargers. Need to get fresh defensive lineman on the field as much as possible. The starting front four are playing way to much. I can see from my living room they are tire. Turn V. Walker,Sidbury,Robertson and some of those rookies loose. Bierman and J Abram are getting worn out they need to stay healthy for the whole season.

Here’s the thing-M. Turner is lucky that he DIDN’T KILL SOMEONE behind the wheel of his car, because it could’ve happened. So no-I won’t give him a free pass on this one. There are lots of families without loved ones for this very same reason. I used to be a Micheal Turner fan, but not anymore. He’s acting like a selfish prick who has little responsibility in a grown man’s body, but acts irresponsible in his personal life for all the world to see. You can’t have it both ways. M. Turner makes a lot of money doing what he does and has millions of kids and responsible adult admiring him from his “glory day” in the past. This is the here and now and Micheal Turner’s life is on full display. I really think this incident is a wakeup call to him because his days on this team is getting shorter and shorter-he keeps these kinds of things up.

I like the way these coordinators are doing their jobs. Not liking the (run the clock) 2 short runs, long pass and punt. If our run game has been shut down the 1st 3 3/4 quarters, it only makes sense that the D can stop us when the run is expected.
Good to see our team 2-0. Great start, keep it up. Hope the injuries don’t kill us.

“Just like having to fess up that maybe earlier Chipper judgements were premature. What you say? “

Ha-ha, wrong about Chipper? Man please, he can’t field and is not going to make 400 plate appearances nor will he play in more than 115 games… Never said he could not hit a baseball. Still, unlike the craziness I read back in March: “Chipper’s going to hit 30 HRs, drive in 90+ runs, and have a OPS over 875…“ The only thing he can approach is OPS… I wasn’t wrong about Jones, he was on the DL (called it), Games played (my pool has already paid me) he didn’t make 120 games and only played in 68% of the games so far… And I didn’t bring up that mess of a personal life he has! Enjoy the three weeks of the Jones farewell tour! Thank goodness for Martin Prado, he’s a real tram player!

“are you ready to admit these Falcons may be special and have a chance at the SB?”

Ha-ha, you act like they’re the ’08 Patriots and are blowing the doors off people! You folks are rich in humor… Unfortunately, and sad in a lack of facts…
