Atlanta Falcons: Christopher Owens is in the concussion program

FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons cornerback Christopher Owens, who left the game against the Denver Broncos with a head injury in the first quarter is in the league’s concussion protocol program, Falcons coach Mike Smith said on Tuesday.

“He starts that protocol today,” Smith said. “With a short week, that limits the time frame in terms of getting him back. We can’t rule him completely out, but he is in the concussion protocol.”

Owens started the game at nickel back. After Owens left, Dominique Franks took over and finished out the game.

Franks had six tackles and one quarterback hit. Owens had two tackles before he went into the locker room.

Cornerback Robert McClain also played against the Broncos and came up with an interception.

“His role is probably going to change this week because of his play and because of other circumstances with our defensive group,” Smith said.

Mcclain made a great play on the ball but i cant judge how good he is on one play he has to be given a chance to show wat he can do

I am still shocked about Michael Turner getting in this trouble………..disappointed too…………you would think other players around him knew and surely the coaching staff had clues to what was going on…………………….

Saints fans have two choices at the moment, paper or plastic. I hope they all choose plastic. >:)

Decorate up nice and pretty NO fans. Lots of gold and black up the stands for your next home game. Hey even take’em on the road with you, just don’t try wearing them in airport security lines….

I doubt McClain gets in at nickel. The question may be whether to stick with Franks inside, or put McClain on the outside and slide DRob in the inside. Say what you want about DRob getting beat from time to time, you can never knock his effort or his willingness to lay the wood to dislodge the ball.

The best scenario was Owens to tap out of the game or else he would have gotten burnt all nite and we wouldn’t have seen the better play by Franks and McClain. He’s on to if he fakes injuries then this staff will continue to slot him on the team as #3 CB. P. Manning’s game plan was to find Owens and throw over him all nite so we were kind of lucky how things worked out.

This is why it takes depth and a coach who is willing to adjust defensive schemes to current personnel. Mike Smith and Mike Nolan will work something out. I noticed that all our DBs are fast and go for the ball. I love seeing them mix some good man coverage in and they are disrupting routes too. Our secondary looked first class in this game regardless of which professional DB was playing. Hoping for a fast and full recovery for Chris Owens; we will need him as soon as possible. GO FALCONS! YOU ARE RISING UP!

DLed, like the announcers asked on the Monday Night Football telecast, where in the world was Akeem Dent? Did he even see the field, and if not, why not???

Smith needs to give McClain a shot at playing nickel. Even though it was one play McClain showed a burst and a play on the ball we’ve never seen from Franks.

Dent wasn’t on the field much because Atlanta was almost exclusively playing nickel. It was obviously a strategy the payed off with all the INTs. Sure the Falcons lose some in run defense but that has not been their biggest problem the last few years.

@Kquark – Thanks. I thought that might be the case, but it also shows a lack of confidence in his ability to handle the mlb position don’t you think?

With our depleted secondary, the really good news about this week is that our DBs don’t have to cover Vincent Jackson. When we played San Diego over the years, Rivers always seemed to find Jackson for a long TD pass play or two. Of course the bad news is we have to face Jackson twice a year with the Bucs, but back to the good news…Josh Freeman is no Philip Rivers.

OK, RED,
You and I must be the only ones that saw Chris Owens get repeatedly TOURCHED over the last 2 years! He single-handily costs us the Packers game. Hell, before he went out Monday, Manning completed a LONG 3rd down conversion over him. He does not have a knack for making plays on the ball. He plays the man and let’s them complete passes all night.

Hope he recovers and can play special teams. McClain and Franks should always be on the field on defunse (that’s what my old coach used to call it). Owens is a liability due to his poor cover skills.

RED got it right. C’mon Nolan, Smitty, I said this before the game. If he would have played, we probably wouldn’t have won. It’s that simple.

NATIVEBIRD, I’m in total agreement with you. Owens must be dating TD’s daughter or something to get such bias treatment by this staff with continual bad performances and still put in the games. Weak links will find a way to lose the games. Only me, you and RUDEDAWG see it I guess.
