Atlanta Falcons: Offense this good? This fast?

Vivlamore reporting from Flowery Branch as DLed jets his way home for Kansas City. Coach Mike Smith press conference scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

FLOWERY BRANCH – Surely, it won’t always be this easy.

The Falcons sprinted out of the gates with a high-powered offensive showcase in their season-opening drubbing of the Chiefs. They scored on their first eight possessions – four touchdowns, four field goals – en route to the 40-24 victory. Four scoring drives were 70 or more yards. Much of the offseason talk centered on how new offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter would use the weapons at his disposal.

But this good? This fast?

“I felt like we had all the tools and if we executed right we could have that type of production,” center Todd McClure said Monday. “But going into the game I probably didn’t think it would be that easy or we would put up that many [points]. I knew we had the capabilities. It was nice. It’s tough to go on the road and to do that, in a loud environment. I think it shows what we have as an offense.”

The Falcons’ 40 points were tied for the third most in the NFL’s opening week, with the Redskins, headed into the two Monday night games. Only the Jets (48 points) and the Bears (41) scored more. It was the Falcons’ highest season-opening point total since 1990.

Other offensive numbers were impressive, considering that several starters were out early in the fourth quarter. The 376 yards of total offense was 12th in the NFL, but the 6.8 yards per play average was second best.

The 292 yards passing was seventh in the league and the 9.6 yards per completion was sixth.

The Falcons didn’t punt the ball until 3:16 remained in the game. A point not lost on the defense. They allowed the Chiefs just 182 yards in the second half – 73 of which came on their final drive when the outcome was long decided.

“They looked amazing,” defensive back Dunta Robinson said of the offense. “That is as high-powered as it gets. I think we punted once. Any time the punter has the day off, you are doing pretty good as an offense and as a team. It makes our job a lot easier.”

At the center of the offensive production was quarterback Matt Ryan. He completed 23 of 31 passes for 299 yards, throwing for three touchdowns and running for another. His 136.4 quarterback rating was second in the NFL, behind only the Redskins’ Robert Griffin III (139.9).

Ryan has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 31 of the past 32 games. He has thrown 197 consecutive passes without an interception, tying the franchise record set by Steve Bartkowski (1982-83).

The Falcons used all of their top offensive players. Julio Jones caught six passes for 108 yards and both touchdowns from Ryan. The second-year receiver now has four two-touchdown games in 14 as a professional. Roddy White (six catches, 87 yards), Tony Gonzalez (five catches, 53 yards, one touchdown) and Harry Douglas (three catches, 32 yards) all contributed.

With the success of the passing game and the no-huddle offense, the Falcons did lag behind in the run game. They finished with 84 yards on 23 carries (3.7 average). Michael Turner had 32 yards on 11 carries.

It’s all part of the scheme.

“You take what the defense gives you,” McClure said. “That is what this offensive system does. Matt has a lot of freedom. We take what they give us. Whatever is easiest for us to execute well. If we’ve got to throw the ball 60 times and not run it once to get a win, I think everyone is this locker room will take it. If we’ve got to run it 60 times and not throw it, we’ve got the guys in this locker room who will be happy with that.”

Great start and seeing Brees suffer made it even better but let’s not forget that KC was missing some key guys on Defense. Can’t wait for Monday Night. Hopefully our D steps it up and keeps Peyton under wraps while our O-Line allows Matt and offense to go off.

Great game, loved the high octane offense and loved the second half defensive adjustments. Keep the foot on the pedal Falcons…..Do not let off of it until this team is holding up the Lombardi Trophy!!!!!!!!!

I thought it was funny that Brees was chunking the ball downfield on every snap. He was throwing jump ball after jump ball. I guess you’ll complete those from time to time, but it’s a crappy game strategy.

Ryan, on the other hand, was taking what the defense gave him and made them pay all day. I guess all that new money that Brees got in his wallet is making it harder to throw.

LMAO!! Looks like the Saints troll our practice squad like the fans troll our blogs. Saints sign Falcons practice squad player O- lineman Bryce Harris. The Saints will soon be a team filled with our sloppy seconds just like our blogs are filled with random Swamp Bowl Poodat rejects. The Saints are clearly on the decline if they find value in our developmental and cast off players. PooDats Bleaux!!! Great day yesterday by your 100 million QB Tru Sleeze. LMAO!!!

good production against a mediocre defense, but very efficient work. Things will toughen substantially this week against Denver Monday night, and you know how poor this team’s record is on Monday nights.

Stay healthy in practice this week, then come out Monday and bust that Bronco a**. Go Birds..

@falconsfam – that signing of Bryce Harris may very well come back to bite us in the butt. Here’s hoping our O-line stays healthy right?

I’ve had the gut feeling for the past few seasons that we needed to open up the passing game. We have the weapons now with Julio & Roddy paired. For years, our glaring issue was and is and will continue to be our pass D. Gaping holes opened up for the Chiefs, imagine the Saints or Packers. Timely turnovers help, but you can’t give up 400 yards to these guys. Sadly, our D is still weak. Let’s hope the O flys high and the D comes through just enough.

The sad part for the Falcons is they could have played on offense all of last season like they did yesterday. All of the pieces were there last year but MM lacked the imagination and creative mental capacity to use them.

Is anyone still angry about the hiring of Dirk Koetter? I liked him from the start. His problem last year was not imagination or creativity, it was a lack of players.

Here’s to shredding Denver in game 2!

@Who me?- SMH. He was a practice squad player dude. Any time you put a guy on practice squad you have to be prepared to lose him to a team with lesser quality players at that position. With the youth and depth we have on the o-line Bryce Harris will not be missed IMO. Happy for him though even if he is now a PooDat. You are missing the point here that our practice squad quality players are considered 53 man roster quality players to the PooDats. There were at least 10 O-linemen on this team ahead of Bryce Harris in talent obviously since 10 made the 53 ahead of him. Worry less dude. We have 2 spots on practice squad to fill…O-lineman Manley probably gets one of those and life goes on.

Everybody knows that the KC Chiefs is a sorry team..hahahahahahahahahaha! Crash and burn next week! The Failcants’ will not even get the wild card this year for the play offs like they did last year..and they did what? Made history. Made the LOWEST SCORE EVER in playoff history. Only scored 2 points..only because the NY Giants tackled Matt’spaghettiarms’ Ryan in the endzone. :) hahahahahahaha! It’s just like the song the NY Giants fans were singing to you all “Nanananah…hey hey hey..GO HOME! ” :) HAHAHAHAHAHA! :)

Talent: JJones, RWhite, TGonzales, MTurner, MRyan… need anyone really go on???

In fact, we should be asking, ‘why so long’??? Name talent should be doing exactly what they did yesterday. Even taking into consideration a new OC, the potential has been there.

Kind of like putting a new battery in a good car… it starts and runs great.

All of you Falcons fans do realize that the Chiefs had 4 starters and 2 backups out on defense right? Imagine the Falcons already bad defense if Witherspoon, Abraham, Samuel, Grimes, and 2 more defensive players hurt and you get the idea. I do think 9-7 maybe 10-6 is possible. Schedule just to hard to wish for anything better than that.

It’s easy to score points when Michael Turner doesn’t get the ball on every first and second down. He needs to be benched. He does not fit with this team.

The Falcon were really this good last year. We got everything we needs to make a huge run. Monday night will be a good test for us. Tightening up the defense gots to be a priority this week.
