KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Wide receiver Drew Davis was added to the Falcons’ 53-man active roster on Saturday.

Offensive Guard Phillipkeith Manley, an undrafted rookie free agent from Toledo, was waived. Davis’ promotion creates an empty slot on the eight-man practice squad. If Manley clears waivers, he’ll likely be added to the practice squad.

Davis, 6-1, 205 pounds was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent on July 26, 2011. He spent the 2011 season as a member of the Falcons practice squad. He caught  42 passes for 470 yards with three touchdowns in 2010 and helped lead Oregon to the BCS national championship game.

Davis gives the Falcons five receivers for the season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Manley, 6-5, 309 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a college free agent on April 30, 2012.

Is there any rhyme or reason to this team’s development plan for 2nd or 3rd tier talent anymore?

Sigh…guess we gotta agree here JSS. Falcons development of players is abyssmal at best…then they go to other teams and I’m like WOW…who knew he had that kind of talent!

Laurent Robinson…. They wait out miserably physically unreliable players or untalented athletes (John Parker Wilson and Meier)… How long did they three guards around? None of them even smelled the field after the third playoff game each year… I’ll leave this alone…

Here is the dilemma that has caused all of the unnecessary juggling for the Atlanta Falcons: white people are afraid that there will be a groundswell of support from black people in Atlanta for quarterback Dominique Davis if Matt Ryan falters and black people fear that the Falcons will do everything they can to keep Davis from playing. It is the insane fear of the potential of a controversy that has bought Luke McCown here to be the number two quarterback when McCown has not been much better than Chris Redman or John Parker Wilson over the last two years. So the Falcons risk losing a quality sleeper of a lineman in Philipkeith Manley for McCown. They will tell you they needed a wide receiver because they only four. Yet, this was obvious when the lineup was announced, did anyone noticed they also only have five linebackers. Stop the madness! McCown should be in the stands as an emergency quarterback because there is not a great demand for him. They could waive him every week and chances are no one will pick him up. Make it simple, carry Ryan and Davis as your quarterbacks, keep the o-lineman Manley and wide receiver Davis on the field, and quit playing games with yourself trying to outsmart everyone. It would appear that the Falcons are placing Manley on waivers over the weekend hoping no one would notice and later grab him for their practice squad by Monday. It is an unnecessary gamble. I don’t care that Dominique Davis is black, he could be green, the main thing is that he represents the best backup quarterback the Falcons have had since Matt Schaub. It is not the controversy of black and white the Falcons should be concerned about; it is the controversy of losing which should be their main concern.

i agree w 1:33 gl your an idiot. and jss why dont you go jump off a building. Our player development is fine. What about brent grimes? What about Vance Walker? Justin blalock? You pointed out laurent robinson who, wasnt he gone smiths first year here? I dont see where hes as good as you claim anyway. If I went through the saints roster over the last ten years im sure Id find plenty of guys they missed out on as well plenty of bums on their current roster, Joey Sunshine? Here the thing though, I just dont care that much to put myself through thinking about the saints that much, I just dont care. You ready for the first game of your saints miserable season jss?

Oh and gl its f*^&ing 2012. Dont make things a race issue. This isnt alabama, nobody cares about black and white anymore. And absolutely no intelligent person would put davis ahead of ryan. Furthermore I dont think teams are beating down manleys door. 3rd string linemen arent a priority for teams now. And luke mccown is not here as a backup hes here to help us win and develope koetters offense.

The old DB coach and a league that no longer exists developed Grimes… Smith and crew can’t take credit for that, just like Clabo… Anymore revisionist history you care to add? By the way, your “just fine” player development that has you playing yo-yo with Franks, add that to the failures of what was Walls, Houston, Chevis Jackson, I’ll leave the enigma Chris Owens alone today, and a underling receiving corp that couldn’t keep draft picks like Meier coach them up or get them healthy, now you’re on to the next bunch…

“Blalock?” He was a nearly finished product (a 2nd round pick in 07)… He wasn’t a development choice, he was brought in to replace Matt Lehr when they dropped zone blocking… Crazy talk, no development would have been Quinn Ojinnaka (remember him?)… Development would have been Sidbury ready in year 2, not year 4 (and that is still a still a big hope)… “Vance Walker?” A nice player, but name the game Walker changed? Robinson was on the 2008 roster (and buried deep by the staff), what did you miss when he was finally teamed with a QB Tony Romo (flawed as he is) capable of throwing him the deep pass? 54 receptions and 11 TDs last year… You could have been truly 4 deep in wideouts instead of still paying part of Michael Jenkins’s salary! Yeah, heck of some development!

“You ready for the first game of your saints miserable season jss?”
Myopic Falcons homer, I don’t care if the Saints win-or-lose… Who are you, the Spiro Agnew of the Beat writer’s blog?
