So, this is the team and I’m going to support them, but I sure wish I knew what they see in Chris Owens that they didn’t see in Franks.

Did not see some of these cuts comming…Franks and Zelenka were a bit of a suprise. People forget that a proven long snapper could win or loose a game(s) This isn’t Madden where you can plug in anyone to do the long snapping. Also, why was Franks cut since HD didn’t get any punt return duties all pre-season log? I think the couching staff is seeing who else got cut from other teams to fill out their roster…still have an hour left before all teams must get down to 53

Love how they kept Davis, and finally cut people who weren’t living up to their billing in Meier and Cox.

not sure about this info, if true…this means they cut Spencer Adkins and they are going into the season with ONE backup OLB? Just doesnt make sense. What also doesnt make sense is not seeing Dominique Franks name, yet a guy who got torched all preseason in Robert McClain is. Giving up on two very talented young men in Adkins and Franks. Puzzling to say the least. I am glad Antone Smith and Dominique Davis made it, although with their play they should have been locks….

I guess they consider Biermann the 6th linebacker? I guess in Nolan’s scheme that is practical..

Who’s returning punts?
I’m surprised we chose McClain over Franks.
For all his faults, Christopher Owens is one of our better ST players. The kid hustles.
For all the “cross-training” we do, why 10 O-Linemen?
Shoulda kept Adkins instead of Manley.

They probably view Massaqoui (sp) as an OLB, in the 3-4 line up.

Franks… I always hoped he’d turn out to be better. He seemed to be a good back up… Oh well.

Hope HD doesn’t get hurt on PR.

How the hell do we justify keeping Chris Owens over FRANKS????? That’s purely stupid

ClassicFalcons

We Run a 3-4 Hybrid. Abe is a LB, Beirman is a LB, and I think Sidbury as well. Stop Reading into the LB Depth. Wish we would of had Tatupa for Peterson. We downgraded big time at middle linebacker. Defense if relatively healthy should be Top 5 easily.

Looks like some DE will be playing the Linebacker position…like Massaquoi and Mathews who are fast enough to cover a TE, yet still rush the passer effectively; that may explain why we kept only 5 linebackers. My 2 cents.

I don’t think Abe is a 3-4 LB. In fact, I am pretty sure the reason we got Abe in the first place was because he refused to play in a 3-4 when the Jets switched. Beirman is too slow to be a 3-4 LB I think. Maybe Massaquoi and Matthews. I don’t know. I think you guys are buying into the 3-4 thing too much anyway. Nolan specifically said we will be a 4-3 and play “some” 3-4. He also said we would play a lot of nickel to get 3 best DBs on the field. I don’t think we will be a true hybrid. I think we will be mostly a 4-3 with a little 3-4 now and then.

Please put Toone Time on kick return team and take the slow J. Rogers off the kick return team. Need a road runner to return on kick offs, not a box turtle. Rogers has no chance to score a TD because he doesn’t have the speed to outrun the other team.

The talent on defense screams a 3-4! Especially with Biermann, Massaquoi and Sidbury playing the outside linebacker defensive end positions.Still concerned on how the defensive backs are going to cover because third and long appears to be a simple task for opposing offenses.

Mike

When you look at LB depth, remember that the defense will probably be in the nickle package much of the time with only two linebackers in the game.

Charlie Murphy

I think a lot of us grew attached to Franks. The reality is he was not very good in coverage. I don’t know if it’s technique or not knowing his playbook but he did not really progress. Now if you look at the talent behind him then you really scratch your head because Owens did not even play a down in preseason and has not shown to be any better in coverage than Franks. Robert McClain made the roster but he got lit up a time or too also in preseason. I am inclined to believe the Falcons are not done with this roster before game 1. Keeping 10 O-linemen sounds a little off to me. Why would you need a backup at every position on the O-line? What happened to the whole cross training O-linemen philosophy? I think there will be more moves before week 1.

Bird Brain

TD needs to just admit the Peria Jerry pick over Clay Mathews was a bust and move on. Don’t let the team suffer for years just to hope you get something out of nothing…like yall did keeping Jamaal Anderson in the line-up for years.

See this PERFECT snap under about as much pressure as a snapper can have, The Real Rick?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8lQFDM_T6I

Josh Harris.

That plus he’s available at the minimum NFL salary.

(I’m a season ticket holder at Auburn… I don’t remember a single bad snap by Josh Harris over the last three years. He’s really, really good. Plus, he’s a Georgia boy from Carrollton.)

It may not be so much this year, but the best move the Falcons made this year was keeping TimToon the wide receiver. This kid is going to be another Wes Welker.
When Franks was drafted all the DRAFT magazines said the same thing–great physical ability, but does really dumb things on the field. Hey, football smarts are as important as speed.
Biermann is going to be lined up a lot this year as alinebacker.
Dent had better learn to defend against the pass or it’s going to be a long season.
Neither Cliff Mathews or Massaquoi are elite pass rushers at this point. Someone has to give Ray edwards a swift kick and tell him why he’s making the big money.
Just what is wrong with Snelling’s leg and how long is he going to be out–the guy just plays great all the time and we need him.
Wish we were deeper at tight end.
William Moore is going to really have to step it up this year if we hope to stop anyone on third down. Samuel can still talk the talk, but so far he’d better hope his uniform isn’t flammable.
Too bad about Kerry Meier. So many of these young guys with a lot of talent come in and get injured. And in the NFL if you can’t play for whatever reason you’re gone.
Do the Falcons have a 1st round draft pick next year or will we still be paying for Julio?
And I still believe the sleeper this year will be Antone Smith. The guy can play and he’s fast.

Great observation with the abundance of lineman. You can bet the farm the Falcons will be looking for a middle linebacker on the waiver wire. Also a really large nose tackle.

Bird Brain- Lemme get this straight. You think we should have cut Jerry today? Now thathe’s finally healthy, playing well and with Corey Peters is on PUP, you think we should let Jerry go. Because Clay Matthews ended up being more productive? Makes no sense at all

Maxx, if you like paying 1st round pay for average play, then keep Peria and handcuff the salary cap numbers. He was overrated before the injuries if you watched any of the college all star game where he was man handled all day. I saw lots of equal talent on other teams 2 and 3 strings in the preseason games. Our 2 and 3 string players were not good so we need to change-out some of our 2 and 3 string with other teams 2 and 3 string players. OK, Peria did almost make a sack or maybe they gave him the sack I think with the 2 string I’ll give that to you and he has Jamaal Anderson like sack stats when they thought he would

I think we all need to take a deep breath and relax. There was a huge outcry to get rid of Mike Mularkey and Brian van Gorder and they probably saw the writing on the wall and left on their own. Their replacements are going to do things their way now. It is different and “the unknown” to us. Each coordinator is shaping the players under him to fit his scheme. They cannot get rid of everyone all at once, and some of the players who have not thrived under the previous coordinators may thrive under the new ones. Lets see what happens.

Some may be wondering about Chris Owens over Franks but lets not forget that Owens is good at special teams. There have been many cases last season when he ran and caught up to people that would have scored on special teams. He never gives up on plays. Franks only shot was KR but the lack of versatility probably costed him a roster spot. I’m not saying Owens is great, but he was the better option between the two for the overall picture.
