Falcons get early look at Mularkey’s work in Jacksonville

Vivlamore reporting from Flowery Branch. Thought I would share another short note leftover from Tuesday that we didn’t get to after the news of the McCown signing/Redman release.

The Falcons face the Jaguars Thursday in the final exhibition game – and remember who will be on the opposite sideline.

Mike Mularkey.

Mike Mularkey was the Falcons offensive coordinator the past four seasons before leaving for the head coaching job in Jacksonville.

Mike Mularkey was the Falcons offensive coordinator the past four seasons before leaving for the head coaching job in Jacksonville.

Mularkey is the new head coach of the Jaguars after spending the past four seasons as the Falcons offensive coordinator. Here is what Falcons coach Mike Smith said about facing his former staff member.

“I talked with Mike [Monday],” Smith said. “It will be different. I’m used to saying Mike in the headset when I’m trying to talk to the guy upstairs, so it will be different. I think they’ve had a really good training camp. You watch and the guys are playing hard. He’s put his stamp on that team through the offseason.”

Might the Falcons defense have an edge after going against a Mularkey offense the past four years?

“The thing about Mike is he has a lot of different personnel groupings and a lot of different formations,” Smith said. “It will be a good test for our guys.”

Smith has praised the job done by Mularkey in Atlanta and stated his appreciation on several occasions.

Here’s the gameplan for Thursday night. Screen pass to Turner. Screen pass to Jaquizz. Jags will be stunned and confused.

Now the one arrogant coach left in Atlanta is at the North Avenue Trade School.

I’ll bet MM has the Jags ready to play. He had a heavy hand in advancing the Falcons as fast as they did. However, when his fully developed team got to the big show, playing the big boys, I felt his tactical thinking fell short. He seemed to have difficulty taking advantage of people’s strengths and he seemed to not understand how to counter punches from a good defense. For example, screens, draws, and traps to counter an aggressive lineman or heavy blitzing. He also favored the short pass to the exclusion of a long pass even when the defense was giving it up. I wish him well in Jax and suspect he has learned even more from his positive and negative experiences in Atlanta.

Starters rest (And don’t get hurt)

Lots of players to be cut after the game and before the week end.
That means, you’r fighting for your life in the NFL for a lot of these
players. They may be too uptight to preform on either team.

If you do well you may make the team………. Or, someone else will
want you for their team…….Expect to see LOTS of scouts from all
the other teams in the league.

It’s show off – - Show out time!!!

Falcon James , you hit the nail on the head……………….thats mularkey alright…………………..just think everyone, we could have had another year’s dose of that crap again……………lmao……..no wayyyyyyyyyyyy !………………Falcons should win this last one easy, even without the starters in the game, but then again you never know……………..they looked like Super Bowl contenders when they played the Saints a couple of weeks ago…………………..but that is another story……………………

If Mularkey’s work in Jacksonville is the same as what he did while in the ATL then the Jaguars will be REAL PREDICTABLE………..just as Falcon James has stated earlier in this blog.

Per Falcon James: Here is what the Falcon should expect
1st Down- Run up the middle
2nd Down- See 1 st Down
3rd and Long- 7 yard pass to TE across the middle
4th and Short- Punt

MM may have the Jags fired up. No telliing what sort of plays he’ll call. Mike Smith might have been
the reason for the offense last year. We’ll see if MM airs it out.

How many of you that are complaining about the lack of a ground game this preseason were in favor of Mularkey being fired last year?

With or without Mularky the Jags are not very good and they don’t have their running back. Akeem Dent needs to play the whole game just to attempt to learn his reads on passing plays.
The Falcons need to play Davis at QB ad have him throwing on every down. White, Jones, and Gonzalez should NOT play at all. We need to find out which receivers to keep this year. And will Kerry Meier ever appear on the field?
Antone Smith, Nance, and Polite need to get a big chance to run the ball so we can keep the right one.
Keep Grimes out. He’s the only cornerback we’ve got.
