FLOWERY BRANCH — Some starters will play a quarter against Jacksonville, while others will get the night off.

In the last two exhibition finales under Smith, the Falcons have heavily rested their starters.

In his first two seasons, he elected to briefly play the starters in the last game.

Last season, the Falcons dropped the exhibition finale 21-7 to Baltimore on Sept. 1. Starters Matt Ryan, Dunta Robinson, Michael Turner, Tony Gonzalez, John Abraham, Tyson Clabo, Roddy White, Corey Peters and Jonathan Babineaux did not play.

In 2010, Ryan and all 21 of the starters did not play in a exhibition finale at Jacksonville, a 13-9 loss.

In 2009, the Falcons played most of their starters in a 20-3 loss to Baltimore. Only Abraham and center Todd McClure were held out of the game.

In 2008, the starters played briefly in a 10-9 win over Baltimore.

Makes great sense to rest all starters. NFL season is long.

Any injuries to a starter would be cause for Coach Smith’s dismissal. Not worth it. Evaluate the B-grade talent and who gives a rip if we win or lose.

This game should decide who will be your number 2 quarterback on the depth chart. Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco have both shown that rookies can play well in their 1st year.

Give this game to Dominique Davis and let’s see what he can do any maybe he can beat out Redman in this one. This game should be a trial between Redman and Davis. Whoever has the best game or looks the best is the #2 QB. My moneys on Davis.

Also, I would have more trust in Vince Young over Chris Redman, should Matty “meltdown” Go down!Saints also cut Luke McCown. McCown and Young are major upgrades over Chrissy Redman, IMO!

Start DD and allow him to play the entire game. We know what Ryan/Redman can do. If DD is as successful as we think he will be, move him to #2, if not then Redman can continue to be the less than impressive backup.

Resting the starters is a good advice to follow…Falcons preseason have been too injure riddled….

Falcons first two games are going to be hard fought wins……or tough losses….

Falcons on three, DOMINATE…

At least this year we have a chance to win without starters because of Dominique Davis.

GHunt, I agree but Redman isn’t awful. He does have that problem of getting passes batted down and had the same problem in his 1st game when taking over during Ryan’s toe injury. After that game he played the next (2 I believe) pretty well. Remember, if your backup is too good, someone else will want him. Schaub!!
I do think there is a possibility of DD becoming #2 this year. Only time will tell. If he does and we are satisfied, Redman’s salary is too high for a #3.

After going back and reading a few, seems like everyone agrees with playing DD most of the game. That is what the preseason is for.

That is fine by me. I think it is a great strategy to get additional reps for the backups in preparation for a long season. It is also good to get final looks for the tough decisions that need to be made this week. I will enjoy watching it just as much as any pre-season game so that I can see what our depth looks like for the coming season. I sure hope that the network lets us watch the game instead of interjecting terrible interviews over the game. I for one would enjoy seeing our football team in action.

It appears to me so far that the Falcons’ depth is far greater than it has ever been. This bodes well for a run into the late season and the playoffs. I also would like to see three quarters of D.Davis. He has been a very pleasant surprise and deserves a chance to get practice reps in this game. I’m hoping to see a much improved second string defense thanks to Nolan and his great coaching. GO FALCONS!

If Davis continues to improve, and Ryan doesn’t win a postseason game this year – lookout for a QB controversy 2013.

This team needs as much work as possible on the OL and running game. They need to teach Turner how to play hop-scotch so he can improve his footwork–he always look like he’s running in quicksand. Also Dent and Dunta needs extended playing time on defense so they should at least play two quarters. Let Dom Davis light it up after Ryan has his reps.

Davis wont get enough playing time for a contraversy if we dont win a preseason this year we will do sonething about this offensive line because that is truly where our problem lies matt ryan is a great quarterback and with enough time he will be great davis doesnt stand a chance of starting in atlanta unless ryan goes down and davis plays like a miracle worker in the season and post season if he could even get us there dont get me wrong i think davis will be a great number one in the near future but not for atlanta unless matty is seriously hurt and definately not this year or the next with no true experience and him being an undrafted free agent u have to remember while he has played well in this preseason its been against only the dirt players of the other teams so we dont kno how he can perform against a true nfl defense and we wont be finding out anytime soon Jmho
